This review is not about the food or delivery service, which I've never tried and which sounds like it is great, based on the other reviews here. This review is just about the business model, as I experienced it while trying to redeem a gift certificate. I received a $100 gift certificate for Thistle. When I went to the Thistle website, I was required to provide my email address before I could even view the meal options (as in, I tried to leave it out and I couldn't proceed to the next step). In the age of inbox overwhelm, I really dislike being forced to provide any personally identifying information before I have even surveyed the landscape to know if I want the service at all. This was a hint of how the rest of the attempt to redeem the gift certificate would go. After I went through the process of selecting the service that I wanted, putting in allergies, choosing frequency, etc, I was prompted to pay. I entered my gift certificate code, and was told I could not complete the order without providing my credit card information. I contacted customer service and asked if there was a way around this, since I know I don't want this service long-term. I was told that I _did_, in fact, have to provide credit card information _and_ that I would automatically be enrolled in ongoing delivery service using that credit card information once the gift certificate was used up, but that I could "cancel any time." In reviewing their gift certificate denominations on their website ($50, $100, $250, $500) compared against the cost of their meal delivery options, I see that it would be impossible to use up a gift certificate entirely without incurring additional charges. Given that they set the denomination for the gift certificates they offer, and that they know the cost of their services, this essentially forces gift recipients to enroll as customers in their program. As a gift recipient, it doesn't feel like a gift to be forced to enroll in a program I don't want, and then to be responsible for remembering to follow up later to make sure I won't be continually charged. I'm an absent-minded enough person that the likelihood that I would forget to cancel at the right time and end up being charged fifty bucks for a product I don't actually want is pretty high. Thistle agreed to refund the money at my request. However, to do this, they needed me to provide them with the credit card information of the gift giver, to whom the credit would be issued. Fortunately, this happened to be my sister, with whom I feel comfortable enough that I could call her and ask for her credit card information and disclose frankly that I don't want her gift. If this had been a gift from someone I didn't feel comfortable contacting about their credit card information or that I thought might take it personally that I didn't want the gift, I probably would have just let Thistle keep the $100 and never used the gift certificate. As it is, it's been a hassle to get the refund sorted out (just because it's inherently a hassle--Thistle has been promptly responsive, which is why I'm not giving one star). I really value freedom of choice as a customer. There is a lot about this system that I perceive as locking people into pathways that benefit Thistle but not the customer. I actually really need the service Thistle is selling (I would love to be able to have healthy vegan meals delivered to my home), but I'll keep looking for now. read more

Overall, I'm impressed. I was wanting to work more vegetables and better variety into my standard eating habits, and Thistle makes that so, so easy. If you are on the fence about whether or not you want to try it, I'd say go for it. Someone gave me a $20 off code when I started, so here's one you can use too: SANDY055 I like the idea of Blue Apron and similar companies, but I wanted an option that wasn't as time consuming and that's basically what Thistle is. All the food is ready to go, just heat in the microwave or in a pan for about 3 minutes. Easy. The prices aren't cheap but overall are pretty fair, considering the percent of organic ingredients. The food is delivered in LA every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday (so on Monday you get Monday and Tuesday's meals; Wednesday is Wed and Thurs meals, etc). You pick which meals you want to get (breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, juices, even coffee) and how many days a week you want them to supply. I only once had an issue with the food not arriving between 5-8am as promised, but when I contacted customer service they refunded that day's charges immediately. The food itself is really tasty. It's healthier than probably most Americans eat, myself included. I noticed the lack of sodium when I got my first order, but I'm glad for the reality check on how salty most of my normal meals are. My favorite part about using Thistle is how flexible they are on everything. The weekly menus are available in advance so you can see specifically what you're getting and even switch out items you're not into. There's a meat option or a vegan/vegetarian option, and their website allows you to review each dish so they can improve the menu each week. Also on the website, stopping service or skipping weeks is easy to do and updates instantly. There are no contracts or setup fees. So I'd say try it for a week and see what you think read more

I feel bad having to write this review but Thistle's customer service's constant failure to honor my requests for a refund instead of a credit has become unacceptable. I am so tired of every delivery having problems and missing items. Every week I write them emails and there is a back and forth exchange about how they are "so sorry" and how they will credit me like they are doing me a favor. No they are not doing me a favor by wasting my money and time. Issuing me a credit for their mistake is not a favor. I still have to buy food. Last week ALL of my food was missing and I only received ice packs!! They would have credited me the $70 even though I still had to buy food for the week. Something is seriously wrong with their operations when it comes to packing orders. I have been ordering from them every week for almost a year it seems and it has just gotten worse and worse. I was giving them another chance and it was going great for about six months before it got bad again. I'm tired of the back and forth and the fact that they are on the serious decline. The amount of time I spend trying to rectify delivery issues with them every week at this point is better spent actually preparing my own meals. I've been using Thistle for about 2 months now and it's awesome. I have a toddler, a German Shepherd, 2 cats, a wife that works 60+ hours a week, a job, and I go to UC Berkeley full time. And... we don't own a microwave. Eating healthy was getting really, really problematic so the wife and I decided to try Thistle and it's been great. We're not strictly vegetarian/vegan but we are doing the vegan meal plans. I do lunch Monday through Saturday and we both do Dinner on the same schedule. Some of the reviews I've read have said Thistle isn't healthy (which is laughable) and the meals get boring (The meals are really diverse. I wonder if this person is just bored by eating. Or breathing...) obviously, I disagree. No comment on the snacks or breakfast stuff, haven't tried them. Pros: It would be stupid complicated and expensive to eat like this on your own. The planning, trips to the store, produce waste, meal prep, etc would be a nightmare (I know from experience) Portions are great, food doesn't go bad Plenty of meal diversity When they were late on one delivery they were super responsive and apologetic and made sure I was taken care of. Cons: You can't order for 2 or more people on one account. This is annoying and silly. A little pricey. Although like I said, trying to eat the same way on your own is really difficult and ends up being just as expensive when you factor in time, energy, and inevitable bad decisions. read more

I've been using Thistle off and on for years. (I've tried almost every vegan meal delivery there is and then some) At first, I was blown away by the price and quality. Dinners were delicious. I quickly realize they don't change their menu to the point that I canceled several times and came back hoping they would have added new items, nope. Same food over and over. It's not sustainable. Any decent business model will have a new and rotating menu to keep customer retention. The reviews about the salads are completely accurate, it's basically vinegar - all you can taste is vinegar! It's awful. They reuse bags which is great but all the food comes in plastic. The majority of plastic can't be recycled and when it can, it's very minimal so it still ends up in landfill and oceans. And they are not salty like some meal delivery places who put way too much salt. I like that they deliver between 7pm- 10pm in Orange County and the food is not sitting on porch all nite. Alright, this shit lives up to the hype. I thought this was going to suck -- like a cheap version of overpriced as fuck Sakara meals -- but I was pleasantly surprised. 99% of the meals are extremely delicious, and I feel good knowing they are healthy ingredients. Plus I LOVE not having to select meals for the week. Everything truly is on autopilot and that is fine because their meals are always healthy and delicious. They completely messed up both of my orders my first week -- they split my 3 days of food into 2 days worth delivered on Monday and 1 day worth delivered on Wednesday. Both days I received duplicate meals whereas each meal was supposed to be a unique recipe. Both days I received a meal that severely did not follow my meal plan -- contained meat I do not eat, contained ingredients to which I am allergic. For the second delivery, the juice I had ordered was missing and instead I received something unlabeled. While customer service eventually got back to me and refunded me for the mix-ups (hence 2 stars instead of 1 star), it is difficult to get ahold of them because you can only email customer service. Expect a delay of a day in their response. I cancelled my subscription immediately because of the ridiculous number of mistakes they made, especially given that customer service had already given me a refund for items in my first delivery before the second delivery was made and they still messed up my second delivery. Fool me once ... Also, it is not worth the price. I can get something comparable for a few dollars cheaper from one of the healthy grab-and-go options downtown, so I may as well buy my lunch near my office every day with the peace of mind that I am actually getting what I paid for. read more

Overflowing bins of trash piling into the street, and worse, Open!, rotting containers of food scattered across the sidewalk attracting rodents! I've been making my lunches for 20 years: cutting up veggies for salads, making dressing over and over and over again. Always trying to change it up, but never really having the time to devote to looking up new recipes. One day this summer I woke up and said "Enough! I can't cut up one more cucumber." I thought there has to be a company who can make my lunch for me and deliver it by the time I leave for work in the morning. That company is Thistle and I am soooo happy. Every lunch is unique. The creativity of ingredients and flavors is amazing and everything is very fresh. I'm pleasantly full after the lunches and don't have to snack at all and my dinners are now smaller because of the healthy lunch. I also started getting their dinners twice a week. All you have to do is stir-fry everything for 3 minutes and dinner is done. OK, so there's a lot of salad and greens, but who can't use more of them in their diet? I'm not a vegan, and I love the food. Oh, and you can pause your account when you go on vacation or you just want a break from it for a while. I haven't tried that yet, but it seems pretty easy. Also, they deliver to San Jose and the south bay, and I hope they continue. I never had a problem with my orders--one time it came late, but everything was still cold. I love it! Have been eating healthier than I would be able to do on my own. Portions are good and food is adventurous but in a good way. Like that you can oder for 1. So many food deliveries have 2 or more meals. And great to not have to cook :-) Trying lots of new foods and feel good it is mostly organic, dairy free. I had about 3 weeks of delivery and lots of good variety so far. I order lunches (great salads) and dinner so far. A few snacks and juices as add ons. I like that you can change every week. Swap meals and meal plans. Some times I want 3 days a week, sometimes 4, sometimes just lunch or adding dinners. Flexibility is great. Full transparency, had a little hiccup with delivery one morning, but the service was responsive and it was fixed within 30 minutes.. Look forward to them expanding to even easier -- 5 days a week in LA (right now they only offer that in SF, up to 4 in LA) and an app would also be great. It's a little hard to navigate changes on my phone but I just use my computer or ipad instead. No biggie. read more

I am very concious of my total carb intake and am happy that the pecans/walnut for my salad just coated with cinnamon and other delightful stuff instead of tasting very sweet! Great job on this one! I tried thistle thinking to myself, finally I have found a food delivery system that's healthy full of nutrients, lots of vegetables and good protein, to help me get on track. But unfortunately the food that I received from Thistle was not exactly that. In fact I could not eat any of it. I don't like to throw food away but this food was in edible. I had Thistle for a week and canceled it indefinitely. On another note, it took over and hour for someone to get back to me on the chat and I also emailed them. All they offered was an apology, which is fine but with my experience in the restaurant business I know that you have to keep wowing your customers in order for them to come back. Seriously gross. I've been giving it a chance for about 6 weeks now, tried everything from breakfast to dinner and juices. I think one in the last 100 things I ordered was "good". How they charge $10.50 for a cup of mush for breakfast blows my mind. I couldn't eat the Raspberry buckwheat porridge from today's breakfast, but I made an equivalent with probably $0.30 worth of oatmeal, almond milk, and frozen berries. I was not an unhealthy eater. But I wasn't THIS healthy of an eater. In my four weeks of using Thistle in LA I have had a huge spike in energy, productivity and all around well-roundedness (not too round, I think I've lost a few inches off my belly!). It's not ALL thanks to Thistle, but it seems to be a leading catalyst. I haven't had any difficulties with delivery, it shows up on my doorstep around 4PM every Wednesday. The meals are filling! These are some hefty salads! So far every meal has been somewhere between "kinda tasty" and "phenomenal". I'm not a picky eater, especially when it comes to veggies, so I have no issues with enjoying what shows up on the doorstep - but I would like the ability to choose my meals/stews every week (and I'd love the ability to add an extra stew to my plan each week)! I hope their LA branch can figure out how to deliver the juices soon and I will definitely be upgrading my plan then. All-in-all would recommend. I feel like I am saving money since I had so many "I have nothing to eat in the house better order something from Amazon restaurants" moments that added up to serious cash. And there are fewer excuses to dine out since I always have meals in the fridge. I have tried every subscription box under the sun. My first two weeks with Thistle, I opted for the protein options which were very tasty, but I've since moved to the vegetarian option since I am trying to cut back on my meat consumption (and I appreciate the savings). I pair Thistle with Blue Apron, who ethically sources their meat and fish, so I can feel better about my protein. I am an extremely busy working professional, and the idea of consistent/affordable/healthy meals is very appealing, however I feel that the Thistle is not living up to all of their marketing. I have always loved clean/healthy foods, but I find about half of the Thistle meals difficult to eat. Two breakfasts in a row have been extremely disappointing... Very tasteless and thick/goopy. They are also have extremely small portions, which generally don't satisfy my hunger for long. I'm willing to try it for another week or so. I feel sort of bad writing this as the support team via Live Chat was responsive and quickly addressed my inquiry, but it was an awful experience and since I wasted a couple hours researching options and selecting food/juice choices on Thistle to have them completely mess up my first order, I thought it was important to share my experience. I ordered on a Saturday and was informed that the first order would be delivered in nine days since I missed the window for starting that Monday. I even logged in before the order was scheduled to arrive to ensure that the selections were on point. The window for delivery was 8 AM - 10 AM and I arrived to work a little early (but expected the delivery closer to 10 AM). 10 AM passed then 10:30 AM then around 11:00 AM, I reached out to Thistle support to make sure I didn't make a mistake or missed a call. Fortunately, I was not the one who f'd up. Apparently the driver "broke" one of the juices and it spilled over the order, and instead of promptly notifying me and giving me the option to at least have the other three juices I ordered, I was told that the driver did not know what to do so he skipped my delivery and didn't make the minor effort of making a call or notifying support to reach out. Thistle support apologized and stated it was the first time this happened and that I would be credited a "free meal". I thanked the support agent, but instructed that they immediately refund the charges and close my account. "Disgusting" as in it is so incredibly freaking good that no amount of positive praise can do them the justice they deserve, so I have had to start using the absolute value of negatives!!! SO many questions I am confused; how?! HOW?! how are you providing such amazingly fresh delicious meals that are providing me with ample fresh veggies, protein, and good carbs that my body needs at such a reasonable price?! How are you able to satisfy my sweet and savory tooth, yet give me the nutrients I need to lift big at the gym and put on mass and strength, while shedding fat at such an accelerate rate?! I love the idea of thistle and used it for about a month. I loved the idea of eating well without having to think about food, and I liked the idea of variety. A few things were really delicious, but most was really heavy on the giant unseasoned chunks of tempei or tofu and scant vegetables. I keep wanting to give it another try, and I keep looking at their menus and emails hoping to see an announcement that the food they deliver is going to look more like the beautiful colorful food in the photos. Often there are fruits and vegetables in the photos that aren't in the meal at all. Or if a description is something like oats with berries, there might be two blueberries and a half a strawberry. If you want to get a lot of protein with a vegan diet, Thistle is a good bet, but if you are looking for fruit and vegetable rich meals, keep looking. read more

(gaining 5 lbs doesn't help;) I needed a change. if you want to dip your toes in the water you can get a 3 day plan, just lunch/dinner. the most you can get is 5 days/week, which is plenty IMO--most people have ample time over weekends to plan their own meals;) it's been a week on it and I already feel more energized, less run-down and less bloated. they change up the menu each day so you don't get bored eating the same thing over and over. it's a bit pricey, but Bistro MD costs about the same and those meals grow disgusting quickly (also they've come to my door half-melted and runny). Thistle has great delivery that always comes on time and texts you when your food has arrived. food is never half-melted, etc. keep up the good work! read more

I LOVE Thistle! I had been looking at meal delivery companies for a while and just could not commit due to the lack of healthy options and gross amounts of salt in the food. Our house is GF and DF so when we found this company I got cautiously excited. But they are amazing! Delivery is always spot on. Meals are full of flavor and some are stretching me to eat better, cleaner which is great! My family is enjoying all the options and trying new things. I swear it's like Christmas morning when I get up and find the green bag at my door. I am passionate about health, balancing what you eat and also eating foods to keep inflammation down, so their desserts without processed sugars are a nice treat. Of course not any one person is going to like every single meal they try but thats life no matter where you eat. We were sick of hearing "Whats for dinner?" and then trying to come up with new ideas. I am so glad Thistle exists! Of all the meal delivery options I've tried, Thistle is the one I enjoy the most. And it's the only one that fits all my dietary restrictions. Plus, i dont have to worry about ordering everyday - twice a week, i receive 2 meals in the morning which I take with me for lunch. I've just started a 5-day-per-week plan with Thistle. These guys are seriously amazing! The food is lovely, the portions are appropriate (not too much, not too little). The delivery time slot (6-8am) is pretty good for getting to work on time, although, if I had to change anything at all I would pick 5-7 instead. And the price is spot on for the service in comparison to others in the area (although the food is way better!). I'm a vegan and Thistle does vegan very well. Its hard to find anywhere that will get you a reasonably balanced vegan meal (solid protein, solid veggies, enough carbs to be filling and satisfying), so this is great. I know a lot of people are trying to eat a little less meat and dairy in order to be a little more environmentally friendly, and I think this could be a good way to do it for people who are intimidated by working with new ingredients or don't have the time to learn vegan cooking. I've been using Thistle for nearly 4 months and have been very happy with the meals as well as the delivery services. I get three vegan dinners/week and they're fresh and tasty. The couple of times I wasn't happy with a meal, Thistle has immediately refunded it without question, and referred my feedback to the chefs. My Monday and Wednesday deliveries are consistently delivered to my doorstep before 7:00 am. Having tried other meal delivery options, boxes that require cooking of the food, I greatly appreciate the lack of excessive packaging. The food comes in a reusable bag with a reusable ice pack, which the Thistle driver picks up when a new meal is delivered. The plastic container that the meals come in are fully recyclable. I appreciate the fact that I'm eating three very healthy meals each week without having to cook them myself (only a reheat required) AND no waste from having to buy more food than I can eat when I cook vegan meals myself. read more

This food delivery service was really not good. There were a couple decent meals but overall the food didn't really stay fresh more than a day. Everything is premade and comes delivered with some ice packs, which didn't keep the ingredients from starting to rot. At first I tried to rationalize the rotting lettuce at the bottom of the container by telling myself the top tasted ok, but then I realized for $13 a meal any sort of rot was really unacceptable. Many of the meals by the 3rd day were inedible and I ended up just throwing them out. Also, the menu is really repetitive and by the 3rd week I was already getting the same food delivered. I would have cancelled after week 2, but they messed up the delivery for the 2nd week and to compensate credited my account $20 instead of refunding me, so I had to purchase a 3rd week. Didn't really appreciate being manipulated like that. When I wrote the company to express my disappointment in their service their reply was short and insencere. Doesn't seem to me like they have really worked out the bugs in this concept and I would not order from them until they do. read more

I'm at 5-week mark. I'm happy enough to have increased my orders from 3 dinners to 4 per week. I use it to supplement my poor cooking. Pros: - Food is very tasty, lots of creative flavors. I'ver only ordered dinner though, haven't tried the rest. No repeats so far. - The food feels healthy. Lots of veggies. - Delivery is very reliable. Other than the first order that got delivered 40 min late because I live at a weird place, all subsequent deliveries were on time. I saw from other reviews that they had logistical problems earlier in the year but I guess they must have worked it out; all deliveries have been on time since. - The portion is right. I'm at a point where I really should not over-eat, the portion size stops me at around 500 calories. - My kids like the food! They no longer eat junk food when they get home, they can find Thistle box in the fridge. Cons: - Feels expensive. For almost $14 a meal you can get a lot more food somewhere else, but I suppose not at this kind of quality. I'm also not tempted to try snacks, juice, add-ons etc--seems too expensive. So I started Thistle about four months ago and at first everything was going well, but then delivery and communication became a crazy struggle. All of a sudden you needed to be a rocket scientist to deliver the food at pick up the bags! Which made the food hard to swallow! After many text and calls (over weeks-I haven't moved!) just about delivery and picking up the bags and ice packs I am left with feeling uncomfortable about the food all together. Why I ask myself! I really wanted to like this service. Gave it 3 weeks. The customer services was good. The website was easy to use and customize what you got for lunch/dinner. There was 1 meal out of 12 that I enjoyed. Everything else fell flat and kind of flavorless. Big boiled pieces of tempeh with no seasoning is just not for me and there seemed to be a lot of that. I am vegetarian, so maybe it is just the plant-based meals. I wouldn't recommend these meals to anyone though. I can see why people are losing weight with Thistle--they don't deliver your food! I really wanted to like this service and have it as an option for my family--the meals look delicious. I waited last night for my first delivery (7 - 10pm delivery window) which never showed up. I received no updates. I sent an email to customer support, but had to call again in the morning. They sent my meals out for delivery today--only for me to discover that only half of them are here. Meaning I suppose that one of us gets to eat this week, while the rest of my family gets to enjoy that healthy, fasting feeling. So now I'm going grocery shopping on Labor Day, because it looks like I'll be cooking dinner this week after all. I am a tax accountant, so trying to eat healthy and quick is always a challenge. This service has totally made that possible! The food is amazing. I order the animal protein or the vegan options interchangeably and have NEVER been dissatisfied. The quality of ingredients is fabulous. If I didn't enjoy cooking, this would be a regular delivery for me. read more

Update: I changed my delivery address to my residence, and there has been a huge improvement in receiving deliveries. If you set address to a busy residential area or business use caution because instructions are inconsistently followed. Thistle makes the best, truly healthy ready-to-eat meals I've come across, and the salads are especially wonderful. Smoothies are often WAY too sweet (even with no added sugars) so I don't order those anymore, but most other options are excellent. read more

Wish I could give more. A co-worker recommended since I'm vegan. Unfortunately the food wasn't as good as she had raved about. It was fine, but not as good as I was expecting. Worse, the promise of vegan protein never materialized. My co-worker added the meat option and was treated to big chunks in her meals. Mine had nothing. I ended up adding my own tofu and other meat alternatives. Customer service did promise this was going to change, but for the price, I didn't want to stick around to see. Hat tip to the driver, though. He was great; found my place no problem, even though it's a bit tricky. And I did like the insulated bag with reusable cold packs. read more

Question: are you really saving $20 when they cut the meals from 6 to 4? Yeah..I didn't think so. Usually when places offer a "deal" like that you actually save money because you get the same amount of meals... I was excited to try Thistle but I will cancel my subscription after this first order because that is just shady to me. read more

I was hoping that the juice was going to be horrible and the portions small so that I wouldn't have a new food addiction but NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, Thistle has to go and be a fantastic service. A friend of mine down the street mentioned them a few weeks ago, and then my husband mentioned that his company has them delivered daily. Of course, when my sugar eating hubby says that he even likes their GREEN juice, I jump online and check them out. OK that was a 10 days ago. I have now ordered from them around 6 times. The juice is AMAZING (Amber is my favorite) and the FOOD is so good and satisfying. I love the rolls and the raw falafel plate. Seriously it is so tasty and I am NOT a vegan. My only issue is that I feel guilty for making them drive across town for two items, so I tend to order a couple of days worth of juices and lunch. Now if they would only make the chia seed "pudding" without cashews. Favorites: Verdance Amber Glow Coral I make my own almond milk but theirs is amazing. I have to admit, the cold pressed coffee wasn't my favorite, but I am a little bit of a coffee snob. So seriously, try these guys. Delivery is super fast and they DO deliver to the Upper Haight. The only thing I wish they did was have a method of storing your delivery address and cc info so that you don't have to enter it every time!
