Dr. Thomas Wu and Dr. Helen Lai both work at this practice even though Yelp only lists Thomas Wu, DDS. In fact, they are married! Dr. Lai was my first dentist. I have been seeing her since I was 7 (16 years ago). The Good - Dr. Lai is professional and experienced. She recruits great people into her practice. - They are not out to get the money in wallet. They are really looking out for my teeth and my health. They don't drill random holes in my mouth because of "cavities" to collect money. - She is great with kids. If you have kids who are scared of the dentist, she is great with kids. She has 2 kids of her own. - Dr. Wu has cleaned my teeth couple of times and I am satisfied every time. - I don't have any problems with the receptionist but I have known them since I was a little girl. The Bad - They are not covered with many insurance companies. When I purchased UCLA's dental group, Dr. Lai was not under their network. FINAL VERDICT Dr. Lai is still my favorite dentist. The Receptionist is the worst!!!! They need to fire her. They rescheduled my dentist appointment because the dentist could not see me the date we agreed on. We had set another date. I later find out I couldn't make the date. So she wanted to charge me a rescheduling fee. I told her I would not pay. She told me that I would be able to come back until I paid. The office then moved to where Gabrielino High School is now, then when they started building the high school it moved a block down to where it is now. I've been a patient of Dr. Wu's for years now. I can't even remember how long I've been going here, perhaps 10 years? Who knows, but the fact of the matter is that i'm a returning patient. The staff is amazing. The two receptionists are super sweet and really make you feel like they're your friends. The dental assistants are also very friendly and great at what they do, from suctioning to doing x-rays. I've been under the care of primarily Dr. Wu and Dr. Shaw and a few interactions with Dr. Lai. They're all really great dentists. They take the time to get to know you and are very thorough in their work. I'd recommend them any day. They also provide me with a little good bag when the service is done. It includes floss, a tooth brush and toothpaste. I always keep them around for when i'm traveling. Perfect! Lastly, they're very accommodating if you dont have dental insurance. Just make sure they know it so they can adjust costs. read more

I have to give Dr. Wu 5 stars. I got a root canal here, maybe 5 or 6 years ago. About 3 years later, I got a crown put on it by another dentist, who was amazed at the thoroughness of his root canal work. Dr. Wu had found all the roots (4!), and the dentist was confident when he put in my crown. I had a deep cleaning a few months ago with yet another dentist, and she also complimented my root canal! Seriously, these dentists were in awe. It's a strange thing to be complimented on - Dr. Wu's handiwork shines on. The front desk people may be irascible and hard to handle (this was ever the case, even when I went there in 2008), etc., but Dr. Wu does a solid, thorough job - which is all you could ever ask for, considering anything less will leave you with a rotting crown and more painful dental work. Dr. Wu gets it done right the first time. If I ever need another root canal (and I hope I won't), I will drive all the way back to Dr. Wu. read more

I've been coming to this dentistry for more that 16 years now and Dr. Lai has been nothing but nice to me. The receptionists are the nicest people I've ever met. They always welcome me when I enter and ask me how I've been since the day that I've met them. The receptionist's job is to be nice and welcoming into the facility. Dr. Lai is honestly like an aunt to me. She has seen me grow up form a toddler to a woman and I believe that her personality has never changed towards me. While she cleans my teeth, she asks me how I've been and how's school to make small talk. I really like that because she strives to make patients feel comfortable because having tools in your mouth can be quite scary. I've seen how she acts with children and she is so patient towards them. Not only me but my whole family goes to this dentistry to get our teeth cleaned. My mom and dad have been coming here even before I was born. The fact that they trust her enough to bring their next generation to this business is so incredible to me. I highly recommend Dr. Lai and her team of assistants because I have known them for quite a while and have observed how they work. Yajaira, Dr. Lai's assistant, is such a nice person. I have been going to Dr. Wu's office since 1996. We were looking for a dentist for our three year old at the time. I didn't want him growing up with the same fears of the dentist I had. Our insurance, which happened to be an HMO at the time, referred us to Dr. Wu. They explained that he and Dr. Lai had a great reputation with kids, and boy were they right on. I was so impressed with Dr. Lai and her gentleness with my son, I myself became her patient. I'd like to add, that if you've had an issue here because of pricing or an HMO, maybe the issue is in fact YOUR HMO and NOT Dr. Wu's office. From the first time we called to make an appointment Niko was warm and friendly. I completely disagree with any negative remarks regarding her being rude. On the contrary, she often took interest in our family and always welcomed us with a smile. Unfortunately Niko is now retired, and we miss seeing her on our visits, but wish her well. As for the current staff at Dr. Wu's office, they too are warm and friendly. I appreciate how comfortable they make me feel, as I had many awful experiences before I found Dr. Lai. We always feel well taken care of by Dr. Wu, Dr. Lai and all their staff. Fast forward twenty-two years, and my son is still a patient of Dr. Wu's office today, as am I. We have referred many friends and family that have also been extremely pleased. Lastly, I'd like to say after being a patient for all these years, Dr Wu and Dr. Lai truly care about their patience. Recently my father in law who has no dental insurance needed a procedure and Dr. Lai worked with us to make sure he could get the dental care he need. I've been at this dentist office since I was born and Dr. Wu and Dr. Lai have been more than stellar at cleaning my teeth. I know many people don't like the dentist because of the fear of pain or whatnot, but the dentists here are great at their job. They are extremely friendly, and multilingual, might I add. The receptionists are friendly and they definitely know what they're doing. I would 10/10 recommend this dentistry, despite what the other "not so great" reviews may say, because they are out of date and a lot seems to have changed. I was referred to Dr. Lai by a friend who had great experiences with them. I, too, enjoy Dr. Lai's great care. She's respectful, discusses possibilities with me throughout the procedure; very skilled and caring during the treatment. Staff are really professional, too. I had replaced two bridges with them, which were the best fit and quality for me over the past 15 years. Dr. Lai accepts some PPO, but the coverage really depends on the type of PPO one has. I've been coming to Dr Wu & Dr Lai's dental office as a kid and they have been great through out the years! The office staff is super nice, despite what the reviews say. Everyone is welcoming, friendly, never had any issues. I've had my baby teeth pulled here, 4 wisdom teeth pulled (easy and painless experience), and teeth cleaned every 6 months, with Dr Lai, then Wu, and now Shaw. Front desk receptionists always greet their guests and if you have a problem, they are willing to sort it out. Most of the time they will make your next appointment for you even if you are unsure of the date and time and tell you to change it but I would prefer just making it when I know I am available. Dr. Wu is very nice. In the beginning, he didn't say much and it felt like pulling teeth to get him to answer certain questions, you just had to probe him about it. But after a while, I realized he is just a really patient man and a good listener. He will wait for you to explain what you want before interrupting. He explains things and even can carry on a conversation. He doesn't have the attitude that you are wasting his time. read more

The receptionist, Nico (if I heard correctly bc she basically mumbled a greeting), answered and was by far the rudest. I have been to Dr. Lai in the past and she is wonderful, but the receptionist is tarnishing the business name. I usually do not write bad reviews, but I was rudely dismissed over the phone. They are a scam. They charged me $100 for isolation material per filling ($5 for a pack of 20) since it supposedly wasn't covered by my insurance. They didn't put it on my receipt because they knew it was bogus. I asked about this practice to other people in the dental industry, and every single one of them agreed it was a bogus charge. You don't even charge for isolation material. It's like charging for the water they use to rinse your mouth. They saw that I was young and inexperienced and took advantage of me. AVOID. read more

I've been going to Dr. Wu for almost 2 decades now. 16 years to be exact, first time there was having my wisdom teeth removed. Dr. Wu is a very easygoing, and honest person with a lot of patience and exceptional skills. He always spends the time to understand my needs and provides professional opinions. Like there is this one time, I told him that I'm interested in getting veneers for my front teeth, and I want to know how much it costs. The first thing he answered was not the price, he first told me the procedures and facts of getting veneers could possibly do a lot of damages to my healthy teeth which he would not recommend; then he told me the prices. Not to mention about my hard learned lesson, I once thought he was trying to rip me off when he told me I was having 3 cavities between 6 teeth during a regular teeth cleaning, so the quote for the filling was based on 6 teeth. I didn't believe him and discarded his advice. One day which was 2 years after I started to have toothache, I knew it was bad. But I didn't go to him, instead I went to another dental office starts with a "P", because they were having a grand opening discount. BAD IDEA! I ended up with more toothache and gum infection. Because that young dentist simply drilled too deep and the filling was not polished smooth enough, and also an occlusal problem on one of the molars. It was just chaotic. Anyway, so I went back to Dr. Wu and he fixed everything for me patiently. That was a hard lesson learned. Because of that, I could totally tell the differences between a well experienced and practiced dentist's hands and a younger dentist with high tech gadgets and nice interior dental office but not skillful enough hands....It's very hard to find a trustworthy with exceptional skills dentist, at the same time not trying to rip you off, so I guess I'm stuck with Dr. Wu until he had to retire one day lol read more

Today I got my teeth deep cleaned by Dr. Helen Lai and I left feeling great and with a shining smile. The whole experience was painless and quick, and at the end I even got a goodie bag full of tooth brushes, tooth paste and floss! They dont just stop at caring for the teeth, they also extremely passionate about encouraging a healthy diet and lifestyle to maintain healthy gums and teeth. This morning was my second visit to Dr. Wu for a wisdom tooth extraction. He is absolutely amazing!! Since my insurance doesn't cover any procedures with this doctor I am a cash patient. However, this has not made me explore other options. Dr. Wu is very friendly and welcoming. He has a very gentle hand and makes sure his patients are well taken care of. Dr. Lai is the best dentist I've had and I would whole heartedly recommend her. I've been going to their Dental Office for many years. There was a time period that I switched insurance plans and had to switch dentists and I absolutely hated it. I never realized how they go above and beyond until I switched dental offices. Needless to say, I am very glad to be back under Dr. Lai's care. The office is very clean and nice. The secretaries/receptionists are very friendly, competent and organized. They also call and remind you of your appointment which is a lifesaver. Dr. Lai is very friendly and a great dentist. She is patient, gentle, and very thorough. I never get anxious over a dental appointment/cavity filling because I know I'm in great hands. I even had all 4 wisdom teeth removed at her office and it was a fast and painless procedure (though the numbing shots hurt...the actual procedure was done in less than 15minutes). You also get a goody bag that has floss, a toothbrush, and toothpaste. Overall - great dentist, nice office, goody bag, and great friendly staff and easy to find location with free parking. I would give give this place ZERO stars if i could, first off i have insurance with them and they wanted to charge me $900 for a fill with my insurance. i went my old dentist which charged me $170 without insurance. So i figured since i have dental i'll get my teeth cleaned since that is covered. they informed me i need to pay for deep cleaning instead. Well i said ill get it done at my other dentist or when i have more cash to dispose of since they are trying to charge me an arm and a leg. They informed me they won't give me a regular cleaning and to go to ANOTHER DENTIST! Worst experience at any kind of medical practice. I would definitely stay away from this place. i would rate this place better if they would let me see the dentist but they wont so im basing my rating through the only person i talked to which is the receptionist. she should be fired and she really needs a job that does not involve customers. read more
