Our son had his wisdom teeth removed back in January, and it's December now, so I think it's safe to say, everything went well! (Held off on writing a review in case something came up later, but nothing did, which is great.) Our son did have some bone spicules push up through his gums, but Dr. Ying had prepared us for that common byproduct of wisdom tooth removal and even provided a cell phone number so we could text him with questions after hours, which was very comforting (and which we took advantage of once, when my son thought a spicule was stuck -- it wasn't, and resolved a day later). I ended up going to Dr. Thomas Ying at Manhattan Beach Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, even though he was not "in-network," because I unfortunately had a terrible experience with the ethically questionable practices of Dr. Benjamin Yagoubian at Torrance Oral Surgery Center. When I first called Dr. Ying's office I spoke with office assistant "Merlin" who was transparent and provided the general prices of the treatment services I needed. I found most other doctors' offices will not do this over the phone; they want you to "first pay for a consultation" to get this information. When I arrived at my first appointment office manager "Holly" thoroughly explained both the steps of my treatment, as well as my financial responsibilities. Holly was a consummate professional, and I so appreciated her! During my appointment with Dr. Ying, I commented how he took his time to explain the treatment I needed, and he stated that he "purposely" scheduled his appointments to allow more time with each patient. I was genuinely surprised to hear Dr. Ying say this because so many other doctors do not choose to do this. The patient forms I was provided with clearly outlined each step of my treatment, even the "three options of anesthesia," something I was never provided with at Dr. Yagoubian's office. Most important, Dr. Ying followed through with all the treatment he proposed. Bottom Line: Even though I had to pay more because Dr. Ying was not 'in-network," the treatment and patient service I received was well worth it! read more

I needed to get an impacted wisdom tooth removed in February. I was not looking forward to this at all. I went in for the initial consultation and the staff was friendly. The doctor was direct, to the point, and didn't waste my time, which I appreciated. I scheduled the surgery for a week later. I initially was just going to go with local anesthesia, but chickened out at the last minute and asked for the nitrous. The removal took maybe 10-12 minutes max, despite the tooth almost being fully horizontal and only 10% of it coming out of the gum. The removal was not painful at all, just a little weird because my face was being pulled to the side to get the teeth out, but in my opinion, the surgeon did a great job. I had no pain or swelling at all from the extraction. The only issue I had was the gauze killing my jaw from having to bite down on it for hours to stop the bleeding. Overall, this process went much better than I expected it to. God forbid I never need to come into this office again, but if I am in need of a surgeon, Dr. Ying is my guy. Most of my friends and family know that I am totally terrified of the dentist. After several years, I found my home for dental surgery! Dr. Ying and his staff are the best ever, they made me feel like I was part of their family, seriously, a sister, auntie, cousin! I went for a tooth extraction, and to my surprise, I was in the chair from start of numbing process to the extraction itself, I don't think it was 20 min with absolutely no pain or discomfort. Honestly if you're looking for an oral surgeon, this is the place to go. I got 4 of my wisdom teeth out on Friday with Dr. Ying and it was super painless and so fast. I chose to use the nitrous oxide and even then, Dr. Ying was so gentle and explained exactly what he was going to do. His assistant was AMAZING. Made me feel super comfortable, super friendly and took great care of me before, during and after. Dr. Ying is straight to the point, soo nice, super knowledgeable and really cares for his patients. Got a piece of enamel removed from my cranium from Dr. Ying. Got nothing to say but 5 stars all day! They got me in the office for an appointment in less than a week, the impacted extraction out the next week (1 tooth, 20 min, BOOM!), and follow up with a clean bill of health the week after. Per the words of Dr. Ying while I was in the chair for wisdom tooth removal, " I don't think I've ever seen anyone smile so much before they got their teeth removed!" Granted I was loopy on some laughing gas which may have been the culprit. Everyone from the office admin, to the Dr. Ying, to the dental assistant were SO DAMN NICE and above all, honest. Dr. Ying is such a wonderful oral surgeon. Our seven year old needed some teeth extracted and was TERRIFIED. In the care of Dr. Ying and his team, it was a breeze. His anesthesiologist Dr. Einstein gave my son numbing cream to put on hours before hand so he didn't feel the iv at all. The extraction was quick, and when my son woke up he said "Hold on I'm not asleep yet!" Lolol. Both Drs checked on us the next day to make sure he was ok. Today I had a dental emergency. My previously root canaled tooth #29 that had a crown on top (all done in 2015) unexpectedly fell out. The tooth could not be saved so my dentist Dr. Jack Hsieh highly recommended that I see Dr. Ying for an implant. I was so worried and stressed about losing my tooth. While I was at my dentist's office dealing with this scary emergency, I called Dr. Ying's office to get a consult. I got in right away and Dr. Ying was able to immediately evaluate my tooth, provide helpful information on implant process, and extract the tooth. I will return in April 2023 for the implant installation. I found that Dr. Ying has steady, careful hands, very intelligent, has a calm and caring demeanor, and his staff competent. The quality of care is first rate, but not inexpensive for those wondering. I strongly believe that first rate care is worth whatever the cost. If you find yourself ever in need of an implant or just an extraction (e.g, wisdom needs pulling for braces), Dr. Ying is your oral surgeon. I promise you. I had to have all four of my wisdom teeth removed. I was NOT looking forward to it as I have a very low pain tolerance and I did not want any surgeries. Mine were very impacted and I was referred to Dr. Ying. His office staff is so friendly and they made me feel comfortable especially with their COVID procedures. Not only did my surgery go smoothly but I felt little to no pain while keeping on my pain medications (which I only used for 2 days). I even had to check if he really took them all out because of how great I felt! I was well taken care of and I am healing so well almost two weeks later. I couldn't be happier that I was sent to Dr. Ying and I would do it over and over again, something I am shocked to be able to say and mean!!! Dr. Ying is the best for wisdom teeth removal. I had to get all 4 removed but did the bottom 2 first and the upper 2 a few months after. In hindsight, I should've just gotten them all removed at the same time but now you have a review from a person who had both general and local anesthesia. Dr. Ying was very thorough in his consultation, answered all my questions and put me at ease. I believe he also trains other dentists on oral surgery. The bottom 2 were impacted and I was strongly advised to get general anesthesia as there would be a lot of blood and pulling. The day of the surgery, I was extremely nervous and my heart rate was very fast as they hooked me up to a machine that monitors breathing and heart rate. The middle aged blonde nurse saw my heart rate and was very comforting and told me not to worry and that everything would be alright. Dr. Ying then came in and was also very comforting. He put his hand on my shoulder and said everything's gonna be ok. Next thing I know I'm back at home with a mouth full of gauze. Dr. Ying personally called me later that night to see how I was doing which was a really nice touch on top of their already great service. I came back a few months later to get my upper 2 wisdom teeth out and opted for just local anesthesia since they were not impacted. I did feel like they were a little bit pushy about general anesthesia but not too much. The warm service was still there on the day of the surgery especially by the middle aged Latina nurse who helped me. The doctor came in the whole thing was over in like 5 minutes and I didn't feel a thing. I didn't get a call later that day like I did with the previous extraction though. Maybe because it was just local? Dr. Ying is really good at what he does so if you need your wisdom teeth extracted, definitely check him out. A special mention needs to be made for his nurses though because they really go out of their way to put you at ease. This review is for the experience I had as a wife taking care of a husband before and after wisdom teeth removal surgery. My husband is, like most men, horrible at taking care of his own health, and had let his wisdom teeth grow out (he's in his early 30's). His general dentist told him he should get them removed because of the crowding in this mouth and referred him to Dr. Ying. Not one to like any kind of doctor, hubby went to Dr. Ying with a little bit of hesitation, but was ready to get stuff done finally after procrastinating for years. Dr. Ying explained that having wisdom teeth grow in is very bad for your oral hygiene because it's hard to keep those teeth clean as they are so far back in your mouth. There was the option of local or general anesthesia, and after my experience with getting my own wisdom teeth with general anesthesia, hubby decided to go that route. The morning I took him to his appointment, I fully expected to have a few hours to waste, but I was told to be back in no more than 40 minutes. It actually only took about 30 minutes- I don't know how but Dr. Ying did it, but he has some crazy skill with pulling teeth! Granted, he didn't have to cut into the gums for these wisdom teeth but that's record timing. Once I got back to the office to pick up my husband, the nurse's assistant explained all the things we should do to make sure the bleeding would stop and to encourage healing. Lots of dos and don'ts and she answered all our questions. Dr. Ying came and told us to call his cell phone in case of an emergency. After this I felt confident that we would be fine and that hubby would recover well. The assistant walked hubby out of the waiting room to the waiting car. The result was, with the instructions we were given, hubby didn't have any swelling after properly icing on the first day, and he could eat a lot of food by the 2nd and 3rd days. He did have some aching and pain which was to be expected, but the prescribed pain meds helped with that. We definitely owe the results to Dr. Ying's skill and the thorough info he has his staff give to patients as followup care. Thanks Dr. Ying! read more

Dishonest Billing and Terrible Customer Service! Tom Ying was referred to me by James A Nguyen, DDS who was treating me. Dr James did a comprehensive exam with the latest x-ray technology. He gave Tom a comprehensive report on the wisdom tooth that needed extracting. Tom did a superficial visual exam and had me watch a video explaining the problems that could happen as a result of the extraction. His staff came in and collected the amount for the office visit including the extraction. I paid in full. The extraction went flawlessly. It took him 2 minutes tops. A month later, I get a bill for $100.00 for "the exam" he never did, because his trusted colleague and friend had already did it and gave him all the info. I tried to reason with the staff about it and even asked the referring dentist to talk to him. Nothing happened. I refused to pay and they sent it to collections. Needless to say, James A Nguyen, DDS didn't get anymore of my business as a result. I am figuring out that it is very difficult to find an honest dental professional in the South Bay. read more

I was referred to Dr. Ying to get a tooth extracted. Having being traumatized as a kid in getting dental work, the only apprehension I have in going to the Dentist is the painful numbing injections. That's the only part I TRULY DREAD. I remember once the dentist numbed the area about 5 times because I could still feel the crucial pain of the drilling. Needless to say, Dr. Ying wasn't exaggerating when he said he has a good hand. On a pain level of 0-10, ten being most painful, I would say 0-1 on getting numbed. I was pretty impressed and did not feel a single thing. And NO I am not exaggerating here. My best tooth extraction experience. Staff is nice and it was a quick in and out. We first met Dr. Ying a year ago when my husband was involved in a serious bike accident on New Year's Day. Dr. Ying's expertise and experience was critical in his recovery that invcluded a broken jaw and five teeth implants. Dr. Ying's professionalism and attention to detail is second to none. It is easy to watch from the sidelines but earlier this week I had to have an impacted and infected wisdom tooth removed. My lower ones were taken out many years ago and it was a very bad experience - I was expecting the worst!!! This experience was beyond easy! I was gently sedated and woke up feeling GREAT! Dr. Ying and his team are the best!! My daughter was under his care twice and both times he was the most caring and professional Dr. !! Everyone in his office is very friendly, very caring and they work fast and efficiently. The first time we were referred by her orthodontist and my daughter got 4 teeth extracted, no problem afterwards as Dr. Ying's prognosis. He told me, she'll need to get her wisdom teeth extracted in 4 years.... and 4 years later, her dentist told her to get the wisdom teeth extracted! Again... Dr. Ying was right! So, we went back to Dr. Ying, got 4 wisdom teeth extracted and as Dr. Ying's prognosis, my daughter was in school next day and had minimal downtime. I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Ying!! I had put off removing my wisdom teeth for 6 years. Pain became more frequent so I decided it was time to bite the bullet. I HATE dentists or any oral surgery due to a few past experiences.! My dentist Dr. Homyak (who is also amazing), referred me to Dr. Ying. Thank god she did. He is the best. SUPER informative and thorough. A quick poke for my IV and less then an hour later I was awake, in no pain and finally those darn wisdom teeth were out. Obviously pain kicked in once anesthetic wore off but he prescribed me medicine to keep me comfortable. If it wasn't for a dry socket I developed I would have been 'mostly' pain free after just 2-3 days. He met me on a Sunday morning to insert a medicated mesh into my socket to eliminate the pain from the dry socket. Within 15 minutes I was no longer in any pain. You have no idea how relieved I was. It's now a week since my surgery and all pain is gone with the exception of the one dry socket. He still has to put the mesh in there every few days but the pain isn't as intense so I think its healing, plus with the mesh, there is no pain at all. My left side is completely pain free. If you have any doubts or fears about getting an extraction or wisdom teeth removed GO TO DR. YING! You will not regret it. He is the BEST!!! Dr. Ying is an excellent oral surgeon and the level of care he and his team provide is incredible. I think it is my favorite medical office I have been to my entire life - staff is very pleasant, the office runs on time as a clockwork, you don't wait at all, unlike in other establishments where half an hour to an hour is a norm. Both my son and I had wisdom teeth removed by Dr. Ying with local anesthesia. I recovered very quickly didn't even need any more than advil. My son had a difficult recovery and was worried that he had a complication (dry socket). He called Dr. Ying on a Sunday and he was in his office waiting for him in half an hour to check on him. This level of service in unprecedented. Turned out that he didn't have the complication and the rest of the recovery was uneventful. Also, I believe Dr. Ying prices a lower for out of network patients (that was my experience). read more

I called Dr Ying's office to see about having a wisdom tooth that needed to come out due to a large cavity & pain. They told me to come right down so I did. After taking the x-ray and reviewing the options we decided to take out the bad tooth right now. I've never been so happy to have a tooth pulled. I wasn't going to have to wait and come back another day. From the time he numbed me up to to time the tooth was out was less than 5 minutes! I've never had such and easy extraction in all my life. SEP 18 2017 I recently had an unfortunate fall in my home, which resulted in me banging my face and head against the edge of the bathroom sink counter (hard ceramic). When I got up from the fall, I was looking at myself in the bathroom vanity mirror. What a horrible sight! I had lost 3 of my front teeth, and I was a bloody mess. My wife immediately called our Family Dentist of the past 30 years, Dr. Steven Ozer, of Beach Teeth in Manhattan Beach. Dr. Ozer was able to calm her by talking her through "first responder mode". Even though this was after normal business hours, Dr. Ozer asked us to immediately drive to the Beach Teeth office where he would meet us to perform emergency procedures. Once there, Dr. Ozer himself went into "emergency mode". He was quickly able to numb me up, and re-insert the missing teeth. The total time from my fall, to the teeth being re-inserted, was 1hr. !! But that's not the end of this story. After Dr. Ozer put me through a 360-degree X-ray of my mouth, it revealed that my bite was not aligned optimally. Dr. Ozer immediately called a colleague of his, Dr. Thomas Ying, of Manhattan Beach Oral Surgery, for a consultation. After a couple of back-and-forths over the phone, Dr. Ying told Dr. Ozer that he would immediately drive to the Beach Teeth office to have a look for himself. When Dr. Ying arrived (within 15 minutes!!), I now had a team of two, working on my predicament. After about 1 more hour of work, the team of Ying and Ozer had my proper bite aligned, and had bonded my loose re-inserted teeth to my firm teeth with a temporary brace. Miraculously, within less than 3 hrs. I was transformed from almost this: (Insert here - picture of front-toothless guy from the movie Deliverance) to virtually my former self. (Insert here - picture of my full-tooth smile) Because of the severity of this trauma, I was told that there may be complications over time. I'll accept that. But without the timely, and selfless, and professional help of these two doctors, I would never have even had a fighting chance. They gave me more than my smile back, they helped preserve my dignity. No amount of thanks is enough for these two miracle workers, especially their "above-and-beyond the call of duty" response to help me in my hour of need. read more

I had a fairly straight-forward wisdom tooth extraction procedure with Dr. Ying and was very pleased with the entire experience. The office is immaculate and very comfortable. Everyone from the receptionist to the dental assistants to Dr. Ying himself was extremely professional and friendly. The procedure itself was extremely easy--I was done (with full anesthesia) in under 40 minutes (just the top two wisdom teeth). At my follow-up appointment, I was visibly upset due to the recent loss of my grandmother. Dr. Ying was so caring and sweet. He sent a condolence card afterword which was so sweet.
