Beware when booking a cabana! Weeks ago I received an email from Wax Myrtles/The Thompson Hotel advertising that pool cabanas are now available to book through Resy, with instructions on how to do so. The email clearly stated to select "Patio Cabanas" in order to book your pool cabana (email attached) so I followed instructions and booked a cabana for 2 people with an upfront deposit of $50 per person. There was no mention of a minimum spend when I booked so I decided to email the hotel to clarify and was told it would be a $200 food and beverage minimum. This seemed doable between 2 people for our 4 hour allotted stay in the cabana. Lunch and a few drinks each, no problem. We show up to the pool and were told that our booked cabana was on the other side of the gate from the pool (on the patio) and that we could only get to the pool if we were hotel guests, as it required a swipe card to get through the pool gate. So basically sitting in the 100 degree heat at a cabana with zero pool access and required to spend $200 minimum. We were completely misled. We showed the hostess the original email with instructions on how to book pool cabanas and told her we followed the directions. She was equally confused and told us there had been the same mixup with at least 4 other groups. We were told there was one cabana available by the pool that we could switch to but it would now be a $300 minimum. We went ahead and agreed to it since our $100 deposit was non-refundable but were not happy that we were forced to spend more money because of the hotel's mixup. The staff was nice as can be but it was clear that management had not filled them in on any details regarding the cabana bookings. Additionally, there was only one bartender working (during a busy Saturday with a packed pool) so it took about 25 minutes to get each drink. The food was very good but overall the day was a bit disappointing due to the slow service and the cabana mixup. It was definitely not worth spending $300 for 4 hours at the pool. read more

WOW! This is a fun, boutique hotel in downtown Austin. Great location (minutes to 6th Street, if that's your thing). The front desk staff is fun and helpful. The rooms are incredible (try to stay on the 16th Floor Residences if possible - you won't want to leave!). The pool area is gorgeous. The on-site restaurants (especially Wax Myrtle's) are delicious. I hope to return to The Thompson the next time I'm in Austin! read more

Great location and great corner rooms. Restaurants are good and hotel is close to a ton of other restaurants and bars. If it's not 120 degrees outside, I would recommend the rooftop bar. read more

I absolutely loved the Thompson! I received the best customer service I've ever had while staying at this hotel. Every member of the staff from the valet, to the front desk and even each restaurant was warm, welcoming and friendly. There were good vibes all around. Also, the room was lovely, the location was great, the food was awesome and the mini bar was well stocked. The hotel was gorgeous and very chic. But again, WOW! We did a little staycation here in Austin and we have done just about every hotel in Austin that has the same amenities as the Thompson Austin and we were extremely happy with our stay. I have to say this is some of the best customer service I have received in a long time as it was consistent from the time we arrived to our departure. The rooms are very spacious, they have a state of the art fitness center with a golf simulator in there as well to the pool, it was just overall a great relaxing experience and encourage anyone that is in town or doing a staycation to stay here. I have the following three comments: there is construction going on during the day that inhibited our ability to use the room as a work or quiet place. At time of booking we should have been advised so we could have made a different choice. When I spoke to the front desk they admitted they had received several similar complaints. The Front Desk staff, was very professional and helpful. They printed two banking documents for me. I was surprised to hear the hotel had no business center nor a scanner so I could not conclude the transaction and had to find a location outside the hotel. If you don't have a Business Center you should at minimum have a scanner for guests. Two in-room charges were applied to our bill for the wrong room. When I called upon checkout I was advised I had to take down a different number and call back on Monday to solve the problem. Why place the burden on me to fix your issues? So all in all I was not pleased with the quality of service. This hotel was booked the Amex Dine Hotels Program and I would stipulate it is not good enough to be in that global program. The rooms looked nice but upon inspection it seems more style than substance. Some of the charging ports didn't work, there was not much pressure on the rain showerhead. The biggest problem was heating and cooling, we managed to be both too cold and too hot and the worst was how we were too hot in the middle of the night. Whatever settings they have if it's on purpose they need to change. We did have a view of the Driskill and were on a quieter side of the hotel away from the pool. We were told it was superior room but it seemed like a pretty standard basic room. The bed was very comfortable. We could not get the smart features to work on the TV because the instructions were inaccurate. There was no doorman for most of the time we were there they said because they were short staffed. It seems like a small thing but it's super annoying with the heavy door and any bags and items to open the door. The lobby was so cold while we were there that folks who were organizing a group for SXSW brought a space heater in. The front desk folks except for one never greeted us. They also seems unable or unwilling to do basic things like book tickets or restaurants for us and didn't even know that delivery people could not bring things up to our rooms so you have to go down to get deliveries (the front desk person said that normally hotel staff would bring up packages but again they were short staffed). The room service staff were all very nice but I had a hard time getting anyone to answer the room service number having to call the front desk several times as well as getting a voice mail for the room service number. There is also very limited room service menu and you can not order from any of the restaurants in the hotel for delivery to your room which I think is ridiculous. It says it can contact to any apple device but the service tech said that they had never been able to get it to work directly and showed us the work-around. The pool was open and I like that it is only accessible by guests and not by the public but it was dissapointing that there was no pool side beverage or food service when we were there in February. Hopefully that has changed. The pool is tiny so I was glad no one else was there and I could do laps. Also it is not opened 24 hours which again seems weird. The fitness center did not have yoga mats nor did they have ones for guests to use in their room which is really basic thing to have for guests. We ate at Wax Myrtle, the diner style place and got drinks at the Coffee place that is also the check in for Tommy's, the other more self catering style of hotel that is attached to The Thompson. The coffee was not good and the workers seemed very unhappy and one told us she was. Wax Myrtle has very good food if again short staffed and trying too hard. Overall for a place wanting to charge top tier prices, it simply did not provide top tier service or amenities. I hope they can improve on the service and amenities. read more

Thompson Austin isn't your average hotel. Yes, it's getting lauded as the "it" hotel in Austin right now. This type of reputation typically produces unrealistic expectations which leads to disappointment of patrons. Thompson breaks through all of that and just serves up a legitimate experience throughout. It starts with the understated entrance. Forget the grand entrances of old, no water fountain, no hustle and bustle. Instead Thompson's sleek and modern entrance could almost be missed if you aren't paying attention. Lookout for the their helpful staff waiting for you to pull up to the modern and sleek entrance. We were warmly greeted by the staff at the curb as well as the lobby. This lobby! It's like walking into a movie where the aesthetic is all modern and sophisticated...but doesn't' take itself too serious. Get checked in where those working this area talk to you like you're human (imagine that) and tell you some history of the building, the origins of the hotel restaurants and bars, and a high recommendation to visit the rooftop pool. This is the type of hotel you'll want to explore. And we did! From the amazing cocktails at Wax Myrtle, Grey Market breakfast, and the spectacular pool...the tour was breathtaking. The room was shockingly spacious and very well appointed. One thing I loved was how cohesive the look was. The rooms captured the same look and feel of the lobby, the elevators, the eateries. We even fit in a workout in the absolute best hotel gym I've ever seen. Will I go back to Thompson Austin???...just say when... read more

I was having a nice start until it was time to pack up the night before leaving, when I realized my expensive bathing suit had gone missing. Somehow my bathing suit got "misplaced" from my room and was no longer there when I returned to my room after house keeping services on the last day of our stay. After discussing with the the front desk, they said that it was maybe mistaken as laundry and taken away with the towels, as the young man working the front desk at the time said this wasn't the first time and they are "constantly" in contact with their 3rd party laundry service company to try and locate articles of clothing that were "misplaced" from the room. So this seems like it is somewhat of a common occurrence. However, without asking for compensation at the time as all I cared about was locating my bathing suit, the young man was nice enough, or so I thought, to offer 2 nights off of our 5 night stay. I thanked him profusely and said that that was an extremely kind gesture. Well, as they say, when something is too good to be true, it typically is, and this was one of those cases as that was a lie. When receiving my itemized bill, I noticed that the two nights had NOT been compensated for. When I called the front desk, they acted like nothing happened, and they refused to give me the name of the young man from Orange County working on Saturday June 15th, so I could verify with him the compensation he had offered me. This whole mess would have been much better if they had offered real compensation or were at least honest in the moment about not being able to give out compensation, rather than flat out lying to their customers. This is hotel hospitality at its worst. I can't imagine the headache they must cause as they "misplace" items on a somewhat regular basis according to their front desk and lie to their customers faces. I will never stay here again and implore anyone who does to be extremely careful with their stuff as well as ask for names of the workers "assisting" you and printed receipts/confirmation of any sort of compensation they claim to offer you. They turned a nice time into an absolute fiasco, not worth the games and the headache. read more

You will not regret booking here. The team always go above and beyond to make sure you are comfy. The interior design is so beautiful and unique! (Interior designers, prepare to be inspired) my fiancé and I had an AC issue and needed a place last minute, Eric is such a sweetheart and took care of us right away. He is the real one! Another huge plus is delicious smelling shower products, literally to die for. So many pluses to staying here, I highly suggest it. Thompson never disappoints and the staff is super friendly and down to earth! Also, the beds are soooo comfy and the food/cocktails are very delish! pro tip- the San Antonio location has amazing soaker tubs! read more

Laying here in a pool of sweat. Never post but this experience rises to the level of needing to warn potential future guests. Came to Austin for one night to help my son, who is entering his medical residency, find a place to live. Rented two rooms for several hundred dollars each. My wife and I don't travel unless we stay at nice properties, plus we wanted our son to spend a nice evening during his big transition to an MD. Found The Thompson online and it appeared to be an upscale property -- for what we paid for a Tuesday night per room it should've been. Noticed right off that the general temperature in the halls and the rooms was elevated and just suspected it was a money saving move, but that the room would cool off if we lowered the temp and waited. I thought at first "that's a little unbecoming of a hotel that's trying to be the "it" Austin hotel, but oh well." Turned the air down and waited for the room to cool off. Was uncomfortable but finally fell asleep around 2AM and woke up at dawn in a pool of sweat because this "swanky" hotel evidently has a movement sensor on the AC that turns off if there's no movement -- as in when you're asleep -- because our system had gone into off mode as we slept. Plus, the curtains don't go all the way to the floor and the first rays of the day blaze into the room like a spotlight. The rain-head shower did little to clean things up with virtually no pressure. Even brushing was a chore as you'd better be quick or the plugged-up sink would overflow. Besides the multiple issues with the room, the design was no better. Just a bunch of expensive furniture crammed in a small rectangular hotel room layout no different from the cheapest hotel room layouts. You could spend half as much for a much better experience at any mid-level hotel in town. Big disappointment. Have a call into the manager who just happens to be in a "big meeting" for at least an hour. We'll see if there's a return call. UPDATE: manager did return my call. comped one of my rooms and valet. doesn't change my lost night of sleep but does show they want to fix it. read more

I absolutely love this hotel, so close to Eddie V's and down town. No need for Ubers and the staff's customer service can't be beat!!! The manager answered all questions and helped us pick out the perfect room for my wife's birthday stay for her and her girlfriends to get ready. I'm in love and can't wait to come back!
