    Smooth and dreamy!!!

OMGosh - this coffee is so smooth! I tried the #MomGoesNutty and it's amazing! It's not so "sweet" that you can only have a little, but smooth and dreamy...and I've had a LOT!!! Can't wait to try my next flavor - but hard to think this one isn't the best. We shall taste and find out! #Bestcoffee #ShopLocal #WomenOwned

Quality coffee and conversation! Essentially a one woman show, I was impressed by the hospitality and quality of the coffee, and it was also so fun to talk and learn more about the beans that were being roasted one room over. A woman owned business, it was refreshing asking a question and not getting mansplained about how to make coffee. Instead, we had an awesome conversation about how the beans were roasted, and the flavor profiles of the beans. Although pour over is not listed on the menu, don't hesitate to ask for it! We were treated to some freshly roasted "India" beans that had an amazing profile, and definitely an interesting flavor, so we actually ended up purchasing a bag as well. The espresso was also extremely well extracted. Being lactose intolerant we opted for oat milk, and the medium roast beans paired so well with the frothy oat milk. It was a decadent latte, very smooth and incredibly delicious. The owner is super knowledgeable and we just had the most fun time conversing and learning more about the business. They also sell some bags in stores, so even if you do not have opportunity to go to this newly opened brick and mortar store, make sure to check out their bags at Market of Choice and some other stores around the Portland Metro area. That being said, I do hope that more people can pop on over to this little shop and give them some support!

The beans I chose, Mom Goes Nutty, has hints of peanut butter, which I could taste in my cup.

I have been looking for a decent breakfast/brunch place close by but so far no luck there. I am still recovering from renal failure so my mobility is severely limited. I travel mostly at the pleasure of the Veterans Transportation Service or Trimet Lyft. Today's Dr appointment finished up sooner than expected so I had some time to kill before the van returned to take me home. So I fired up my tablet and took a look on Yelp to see if there was anything of interest close by. Enter Insomnia Coffee. Lots of positive reviews. Right around the corner. So... off I go. I an a US Navy brownwater sailor. We drink coffee that tastes like coffee. No additives. None. Not even cream or (gasp) sugar. So when I told the barista [HA! The person who pours coffee into a cup] that i wanted a cup of coffee black I got this sort of deer in the headlights look. What? ...I'm sure she was thinking... no Madagascar cinnamon? no foaming goop? no stale crouton crumbs? no pumpkin pie spice? Ummmm seriously? People want their coffee to taste like pumpkin? Yikes. No Miss... just a cuppa Joe. Just like my first heart throb, Anna Mae Bullock....strong and black. And I have to say, insomnia delivered. Not a bad cup of coffee at all. Although I didn't really want to hang out there since it appeared that I had zero in common with anyone I saw there... hogging the comfortable looking chairs. So I had it in a paper cup, to go. Now I have a "thing" about drinking coffee from a large, ceramic mug.... I loathe tasting paper in my coffee and yes I can tell it's in a paper cup even blindfolded. but I digress. They did have a whole display area of decadent looking pastries and not the tiny, overpriced, bogus looking stuff you see at Starbucks. Not that i would ever go into a Starbucks even to use the rest room. They had several pies that made my mouth water and some gooey breakfast glazed things that would have seriously spiked my glucose. so I reluctantly passed. Perhaps next time :)

The service was OK, but they asked for a tip before providing any. That's always off putting. Especially when I had to change out the coffee carafe to get my own cup of coffee. That said, the coffee was nothing special. It was cool to see the roasting facility through the glass in the dining area. Now let's talk about the breakfast. My husband had the eggs Benedict and it was OK. I ordered the West Coast Hash and eggs and it wasn't OK. My over medium eggs were microwave rubber. Moved like silly putty. The hash was 99% potatoes and microscopic squares of ham and chopped dried bacon. The meal was very unpleasant. The best part of the hash were the diced jalapeños. This place is a one and done for me.

Albeit the menu seems limited, you'll find options such as the Chocolate Croissant, (which is my favorite! Ask for it warmed up and you can taste its crispy flakes with more gusto!) to the Vegan Coffee Cake, which is surprisingly tasty, and you wouldn't think it's vegan! Also, maybe I forgot to mention it, but this is a vegan coffee cake! On the savory side, I'd encourage you to try the Savory Biscuit with Egg and Sausage, or Bacon. This is for those indulging themselves in the moment with their loved ones, and not on a diet. Speaking of diet, if you'd like to enjoy of their carefully curated ambience, assortment of free board games or joining a friend for chess or knitting on a Monday, you could enjoy drip coffee for as low as $4 (!) or the delicious Fruit Sangria Tea - add honey for some decadence. Pro tip: Get a 20% discount on everything by buying 4 x $25 Insomnia gift cards at Costco, for $79. Again, my favorite part, beyond the classic Aztec Mocha showered in cinnamon (not for health but because that enhances flavor in food!), that they're open at 6am sharp, the free blankets to keep you warm when sitting outside, or the fact that the barista knows me by name and spells my long name correctly (Baltazar), is that all this together show the amount of love both owners and employees put into each cup of coffee poured for us.
