This place has earned every star. Even after a single experience I can't recommend it highly enough, and I can't wait to go back. I hopped in here with my ladyfriend who has been hugely enthusiastic about Three Lions. She's something of a xenophile and would talk up this place in Shorewood that was "British person approved" in her words. Last night I finally got the chance to check it out. The staff is extremely friendly. Actually, every single person that we interacted with was truly genuine and ready to accommodate. The food: outstanding. It's not terribly fancy stuff: burgers, fish and chips, savory British pies, but it's executed so well. I had the fish and chips--it's reminiscent of traditional Wisconsin Friday fish fry of course, so I knew what to expect and I got it. The fries are thick cut and hearty. Even the mushy pea side had a really fresh flavor. I also sampled a bit of my partner's cottage pie, it was similarly excellent. The atmosphere is perfect. They've not made half-measures in creating the illusion of an English pub, but the place isn't full of kitsch either. They've struck that middle ground. I also want to point out that the noise level is also great; the music is at a level where you can hear it and make out the songs you recognize but you're not shouting over it to speak, and neither is anyone else. It's a weird thing to mention, but it's one of those odd things I noticed. Also, there's a treasure hidden at at least one of the tables. I'm not going to say any more on that. I've been a little wishy-washy about some of my ratings in the past, but on this one I feel very solid: five stars all the way. read more

When I get off my ass and write reviews on Yelp it's because the spot has an intangible that rises above the basics of what brought me in the door to begin with. THREE LIONS PUB has heart. That's the bottom line. Its a great bar for any part of your night - knock around British fun, belly up to the bar, get a shot and a beer and see whats up. Plenty of day time action too with full soccer schedules and all sports on giant flat screens. "Alright guvnor, how bouts we shake off the ol' ball and chain and pop down to the pub for a Bill Murray and a few Britney Spears?" I'm an Englishman who lives in America, and one of the constant torments I have to endure is people addressing me in the above manner because they think that they're connecting with me all whilst being über hilarious. They're not. What's worse is when an "English" pub takes the same approach. The Dog's Bollocks was one such place. John Hawks Pub is another. Throwing a photo of the Queen on the wall and shoving a red phone box outside does not make you an English pub. No pub I've ever been to in the homeland has included either of these in their decor, and it's even harder to justify your moniker when you consider Leinenkugels to be your best "import". The Three Lions breaks this trend with a vengeance. Yes, they have the odd photo of the queen and one too many Keep Calm gags for my liking on the walls, but they are quintessentially British in character. From the owners and bar staff who hail almost exclusively from the motherland, to their commitment to providing a place for Milwaukee to watch every EPL game no matter what time of day it's on (6am is nothing to these lads), they work hard to earn their name as the best English Pub in Milwaukee, and they deserve it. What's most impressive is their commitment to providing an English flavor on the menu. Plenty of places will have an "British" menu of fish & chips, hot wings, cheeseburgers and ribs (hint, only one truly English dish in there), but the Three Lions orders REAL ENGLISH BACON. If you want to know the difference, it's just like American bacon, but exactly 7 times more awesome. They also provide black pudding in their breakfast, which can be most simply described as fried clotted pig's blood. Seriously. I'm not a fan, but my people love it. If you're in there for lunch or dinner, try the Toad in the Hole - generous helpings of delicious sausage with perfect gravy over Yorkshire puddings - my favourite. The beer selection is a healthy mix of English, Irish, generic and local craft, and while a little pricey for me (a few drinks and a meal for two rarely comes below $50), you can't argue with the quality and appropriateness to their location. Not only do they pass around jello shots (which I unfortunately have to decline), they whip out some free Half Time food the cook has come up with. Not only does it make you feel like your having your own Packer party at home, WHO can complain about being SERVED, relaxing, and homemade food YOU didnt have to make! Stopped by for the first time (since I happened to be at Alterra across the street) and was mildly impressed, though not entirely. The food was pretty yummy. My girlfriend and I had some good pub staples: chicken curry over chips and Welsh rarebits. Both were good and the curry was enough to take home. The service, on the other hand, was less than stellar. We slipped in at the last minute -- which I am not generally a fan of doing -- but I asked the waitress to ask the kitchen staff to make sure it was ok we ordered food. We got the go-ahead, which I appreciated. However, the waitress simply ignored us after taking our order: did not come to check on us, did not ask about our drinks or food, and did not get our check. She completely forgot about us because (and this irked me) she handed the bill over to the bar tender without telling us, and the bar tender then did not even come over. Needless to say, the waitress got her minimum tip. Perhaps I will be better able to review them when I go earlier in the day. Until then, it will remain 2 stars. read more

I have heard many neighbors who moved into the nice new condos across the street that opened before Three Lions as well as home owners nearby complain about this place because it is so loud. A little bit of Britan in the North Shore. This is my kind of place on a Saturday night: live music, crowded, loud, and good times had by all. I like the layout, the decor, and the furnishings. It feels warm, especially on a cold night. Although I didn't eat on my visit, I've heard from several other Yelpers that the Wiso Fish and Chips is a must have. I wonder if they serve it wrapped up in this morning's newspaper? Probably not. Although it would be authentic Brit "chip shop" protocol, I'm assuming it's against certain health codes in this country. Great beer list, great barkeeps. If I spent more time in this neighborhood, I could see myself getting pissed here on a regular basis. This is the real deal, folks - started by lads from over the pond that came over to play soccer/football for Cardinal Stritch. The decor is appropriately dark and sporty. We love Ceili the waitress - also from over the pond. She's fun, enthusiastic, warm, casual and smart about food and drink. Best scotch egg we've ever had. A highly respectable traditional English Breakfast. The place just makes me smile the whole time I'm there. read more

It is about time i write this review, as i have several check-ins here. This is a nice little pub with a beautiful bar. They have a nice beer selection and there is a check-in offer too! I really enjoy the service, the staff is always very nice and welcoming. I visited several times before eating the food. I have to say, i try and eat very healthy and don't eat deep fried food. Slim pickings on the menu! I ordered the marinated chicken breast, and was pleased. It is so easy to overcook a chicken breast, resulting in a dry and boring sandwich. I was pleasantly surprised. The other food looked OK, i would love for them to find a few more healthier options. The decor is a bit odd, and feels a bit forced. I don't get the "pub" feel from the wall hangings. However, everytime i'm there i enjoy my stay, I am pleased with my drinks, and impressed with the service. The bartender, Kyle, knows what in the heck he's doing! He pours his beers with the perfect amount of head based on the type of beer he is serving. It was a Sunday night, so the place was not busy and had a real neighborhood vibe going. This is great, since I will be moving to this neighborhood in a few short weeks and look forward to walking to Three Lions. For dinner I had the Wisconsin Fish & Chips made with Walleye. Although I prefer my walleye pan-fired, this dish was very good with a good thick piece of fish and thick cut steak fries. The accompanying cole slaw was just the way I like it with a tart vinegar base and not overloaded with mayo or celery seed. Just made it back in to Three Lions the other night and wanted to up the stars to 5! This has become one of my favorite bars in Milwaukee (technically Shorewood). I love the fact that it is totally unpretentious, excellent food, adorable British bartenders, ciders, team trivia, outside seating, easy parking, and an awesome atmosphere. We arrived minutes before the kitchen was closing, and the bartender/kitchen staff were considerate enough to get our order in! The food was once again delicious, and cooked to perfection. However I was informed the sweet potato waffle fries are off the menu now... :( Otherwise the 'chips' with malt vinegar are a perfect combination. Holy Big Pretzel!! We ordered this for an app but it ended up being our dinner as well it was so ginormous! Also, very delicious. I am a sucker for stadium cheese (i.e. not really cheese but just chemicals that are made the taste like cheese. Yup. Me likes that) so thank GOODNESS one of the sauces was stadium cheese, the other two were mustard and queso. The queso was not so good so next time I would probably order 2 stadium cheese's and 1 mustard. The food here has been pretty hit and miss for me in the past. They do have a new menu however nothing really jumped out at me that night as a "Must Get" item- hence we settled on the pretzel. The reason we keep going back to Three Lions is for the service and friendliness of this bar. It truly has that warm and fuzzy feeling and it makes you want to stay awhile. Yay, a traditional english gastropub. They do a really nice gravy, which the menu describes as house made demi-glace (nice!), and used nicely in the Poutine or the Bangers and mash. The Lion's giant pretzel is pretty big, so don't be a fool...consistently offer your buddies some of it, so you have space to drink a draught beer! Finally the shepherds pie is delicious. Order the giant pretzel and ask for just rarebit dipping sauce (skip the plain cheese and mustard). That's all you need to know. Everything below is just filler for this review. A warm Friday and three of us stop in. There's a short wait but nothing serious. Our brief stop at the bar resulted in quick service for a round of tall Jameson Sours. We're seated and then we spot the giant pretzels being eaten by other patrons. Of course we order one! How could you not? The pretzel is brought out hot. It's flavorful, soft, moist and giant. Everything I look for in a pretzel. Three dipping sauces are provided: nacho cheese, mustard and welsh rarebit (a cheese based sauced in which no rabbits are harmed during production). The nacho cheese is exactly what you're imagining, the mustard is a wonderful stone ground affair but, the rarebit is fabulous. I don't know that they'll do it but, ask to substitute at least the nacho cheese for a second cup of rarebit. For the main course I opted for lamb. It was good, not great but enjoyable and not disappointing. Frankly, my memory still goes back to the pretzel. Drinks are cheap and the service is good. Beer selection is decent but could be better. One of our party suggested that it was missing a beer engine and I agree. There was a mix of clientele that included families. We came on build your own burger night, which was awesome too. But I may just stick with the Wisconsin fish and chips. Huge piece of fish, nicely battered. Definitely will be back. ENVIRONMENT: What you'd expect at a pub. The place is a lot bigger than it seems. They have some nice huge booths - big enough for 6. Lots of decorations on the wall. SERVICE: Good enough for a pub. I went here for the first time this past Monday and I am very glad I went! The food was great and service may have been even better! I wish I could remember our waitress's name to give her credit - she set the standard for good waitressing. The food was awesome and their happy hour special was even better! I had the fish sandwich and I'm pretty picky when it comes to fish. It was great! Nice and flaky and the breading was very tasty. I absolutely love British beer & food. A good english bitter or ale is probably my favorite beer... and that brown gravy, yum. Very bummed that this is the only fairly legit English pub in town (because I like on the south side, so it's a big drive) but I'm glad it exists. Went here for Harry Potter trivia. It was my first time going there, and I can say that it won't be my last. Despite it being packed to the gills, our waiter who was working double time, was still wonderful, and check on us every 20 minutes or so. I had a basket of chips with malt vinegar, and a drink. Came to about $12 in total. The chips were nice and hot, and wonderful! The drink was not overly strong, which I didn't mind as I was driving. Wonderful atmosphere! We stop for a football match, drink and eats when we're in the mood. This is one of the best places in town to do all three in the AM or PM. One of the things that stands out most about Three Lions is the space. It's not at all cramped and has more than enough viewing screens. If I'm in Shorewood and want to grab some quick bar food, this is my first choice. It has a friendly and laid back atmosphere. The staff is always friendly and have always given me recommendations for new drinks that are delicious. The bar food is also great. I love having a tray of chips with a side of their house curry and a pint of Old Speckled Hen. Their scotch eggs are pretty great, they make me wish more bars had them. Understanding that this is a British pub, NOT in Britain...... Being perhaps the most genuine British Pub in metro Milwaukee; and with a good portion of the staff hailing from across the sea(s), they can draw some heavy British crowds. And, it can wind up feeling unintentionally-polarizing and segregated. Your first visit may leave you feeling lonely. You'll spend the entirety of your visit checking the mirror, your shoes, under the arms, etc. It's not YOUR fault. You're beautiful. And you WILL be recognized. Just maybe not on your first visit. Just be nice, enjoy your compadres/food/drink, and thank the staff. Exchange names. Shake hands. I'm glad I didn't take the knee-jerk "f*ck off" approach. Because the guys behind the bar rock. They appreciate your appreciation of what they have to offer. Which is perhaps the most authentic pint of Guinness in town. I've got a very mixed opinion of 3 Lions Pub... When I first walked in, I felt very at comfortable with the atmosphere. Lots of dark wood, and a nice long bar, with good soft lighting. I was greeted soon after entering, and the stools were surprisingly comfortable. Our bartender, Jess, was friendly and talkative. She was great, and more than willing to play a round of bar dice with us (part of my standard bar test... at least that's my excuse), however the tap system seemed very out of order. My whiskey and coke was flat and a bit weak, and watching the bartenders attempt to pour beers, most of the taps were pouring out nothing but head. Looked like they used five beers worth to finally fill one glass. Jess left while we were still there, and the bartender who took over was pleasant enough, but was not very attentive. We waited with empty glasses for a rather long amount of time, especially considering the bar was not terribly lively, 15 people inside at most, with maybe 7-8 sitting at the bar. I was there with a friend, and they had put everything on my tab, and when I asked to split the bill, the bartender nodded, went to close it out, and came back with everything charged to my card. I'm not sure if he didn't hear me, since the bar was not very loud at all, but this definitely rubbed me the wrong way. He ran off to the other side of the bar right after setting the credit slip down, before I could get a word out, and never came back to our side. Being there on a Thursday, there was karaoke, and more surprisingly, patrons at the 3 Lions CAN SING. By far, the best part of the night was watching two older men singing Sinatra, Beach Boys, and Johnny Cash, and absolutely nailing it. I went here once with a group I'm in, and I was quite awesome. Let's start with the food. The Fish and Chips were absolutely amazing. Very high quality and a decent prize. The poutine was highly addictive. However I don't know what that green pea like side was, but it was strange. The drinks were fairly priced, I had a Newcastle, and they had a pretty good choice of beers. The servers were British, to add to the anglosphere, giving it that authentic British feel. I'm a fan! Started off with a big-ass-pretzel which included three dips. That's a nice amount of dips. Not a bad start, Three Lions you sly dog. Then it was wing time. Not the best wings I've ever had, but better than most. I tried the hot - it was typical buffalo sauce to me... and it wasn't very hot. I will probably try another sauce next time - they have several. I also sampled some of the pasty that my best gal was attempting to finish. I've been here twice now.. first time was decent: good server, affordable meal & drinks, but nothing to write home about. Today it was terrible. I think overall this is a decent establishment, but they were definitely off. My friends and I came in for brunch and we were greeted and told to sit anywhere. The inside was mostly empty, a few patrons at the bar and a few couples outside - not busy at all. There were 5 of us, we ordered a round of coffee's and once our waitress came back, we put in our order. Here's where things start going wrong. We waited about 45 minutes for our food to come. In between that time, two of us asked for our coffee to be refilled and that alone took about 10 minutes. We almost got up and left a couple times, but decided to ride it out. Finally the food came out, but it came out 1 plate first, then 2 more, and then 2 more. The waitress apologized for the delay and said there was only one chief and he was fluster in the kitchen, which did not instill confidence in our meals. 4 out 5 of the dishes had something wrong. One dish was the shrimp and pork belly grits and it was extremely spicy. Luckily the gentleman that ate it liked spicy food (and he was extremely hungry), but he was dripping in sweat by the end of it. Another got the breakfast burrito, which the waitress called the chicken Caesar wrap and then quickly corrected herself. We were pretty sure all the ingredients to the breakfast burrito were present... plus Caesar dressing or maybe it could have been white pudding - basically there was something off about it. Speaking of white pudding, I ordered the full English breakfast, which was supposed to come with white pudding, but it was nowhere to be seen. Lastly, the breakfast burger was lacking in flavor and the bacon was over cooked. So at this point, we've waited 45 minutes, food was sub par and then our waitress was having trouble splitting the bill. I won't go into detail because it really wasn't that big of a deal, it was just one more thing piled onto an already bad experience. Ultimately, I think we had an under trained waitress and an understaffed kitchen. I encourage those reading this to try Three Lions and form an opinion yourself, but as for me, they have not instilled enough confidence for me to give it a good rating. If it was this disorganized when it's slow, it makes me wonder what it is like when they are very busy. It was a very disappointing experience to say the least. If I do go back, it will be just for drinks. read more
