I am not sure where to begin with my grow a frog saga. I had a grow a frog when I was child and one day disappeared from the tank. Presumably, it "jumped" out, but I seem to remember not feeding it or ever changing the water.. In an emotional discussion with my gf I told her a my past tragedy. The good soul that she is decided to gift me some grow a frogs in an effort to relive this childhood experience. The arrived in their little styrofoam pod and their instructions demanded distilled water. After running around trying to procure the water I set up their habitat. The habitat consisted of some colored sand and two fake shells. Initially I was given two frogs to nurture, but through some web promotion I ended up with 4. After caring from them and seeing them mature into full sized adults tragedy struck and two died. While the grow a frogs are kinda interesting in the sense that for a few months they were transparent they are not always the best pets and have become burdens. The frogs often soil their "habitat" minutes after cleaning. The can be loud at night if they are fighting. In fact they were so loud and raucous that I had to remove their shells because they kept banging them around. Also, they offer no companionship and are generally just consumers in this toxic relationship. For a brief time I did own "tube town" which is a large habitat connected with tubes but it took up too much space. I have also tried using a water filter for their tank but not even that worked. On the plus side is that the Three Rivers Co. offers "clapping powder" which cause the frogs to clap. I am convinced it is some agent that causes them to seize for several minutes, so I discontinued the use of it. Their "food" also leaves a horrible smell on your hands making you want to induce vomiting. Regardless, Three Rivers Co. and their mascot "Gilly" are great and will even take the frogs back. I have considered this option, but feel guilt. Ohh and dont even think of putting them in the wild as they will disrupt the ecosystem. Seriously, they will... My frogs are about 4 years old now and are still without names. They are almost wards of the state and I suspect I will be on TLC on some animal show where they repo the frogs. In terms of pets they are marginally better than an ant farm, but not as cool as sea monkeys. UPDATE: Tragedy has struck again and another GAF has perished. I have been waiting for a year! Followed instructions, got a confirmation email. My emails go unanswered and they never answer their phone. Spent over 30 bucks for 3 dollars worth of tadpole food and a plastic box that I could have gotten at the 99 cents store. I spoke with Amazon, they can't do much as far as getting my frog to me but they are looking into the matter since it seems many of us are frogless. Bought this for my granddaughter last Xmas. My granddaughter is disappointed and unfortunately has already had to experience getting burned by a fraudulent company. The worst part is that your target market is 5 to 12 year old kids. Horrific Experience - Unwilling to communicate until BBB complaint - They don't inform the customer about heat restrictions until after credit card is charged. - They ship African clawed frogs to states where they are illegal - They were unwilling to ship a tadpole to replace my tadpole that died because it had been several months. They said they would ship a full grown frog, but the whole point was a science lesson for my kids to see a tadpole develop into a frog. More importantly, the only reason it was several months later was because when I initially asked for a replacement, they said it was too hot to ship! - The business has the worst business practices. read more

Grow a Frog! I've had my frog for 21 years now and he's still going strong. These are african clawed frogs. They are aquatic and they are pretty cool. I've enjoyed my time with my frog and have never had a problem with the company. I re-order food from them about three times a year for my frog. He "sings" at night and eats off the yellow (or green) spoon provided by the company. After the first year, I discontinued the use of distilled water and went with tap treatment drops. I've since discontinued that and just use tap water. He's totally fine. I use a ten-gallon fishtank for my frog. The habitats from grow-a-frog are simply too small. I reccomend these frogs as moderate maintenance pets. They're fun to watch, fun to feed, and are good learning projects for kids. However, I recomend one does a bit of google-ing regarding african clawed frogs before making the comittment. They can live a long time, they need to be fed by hand, the water in the tank must be changed frequently. I do mine every two weeks. This company fails to tell you that they can live up to 30 years if taken care of properly. The average lifespan for a grow-a-frog frog is 5 years according to grow-a-frog's literature. I can only speculate the reasons. If one does decide to get rid of the frog, "letting it go" in your local stream is NOT the answer. Call the company and they'll take it back. They'll even send you proper packaging to return him/her. Quality product, fun pet, do your research. read more

African Clawed frogs are illegal in many states, and I have read that this company is in a law suit with the State of Nevada over it. They claim they give two other frog species... I live in California (another state the African Frog is illegal), so I have been trying to call this store for days... they just don't answer. All I want to know is if they will send me a legal species. :( My kids have been waiting forever and I was trying to get them a deal with our school.. seems they don't need or want the buisiness. They claim their phone hours are 8-8 weekdays and 9-5 weekends... I've been calling 5:00 their time... no answer... no machine. too bad. looks like local pet shop for us. read more

I can't begin to describe the ordeal we've gone through with these people. It involves multiple interactions, multiple offenses on their part, and the worst possible customer service that you can imagine. I'm not someone who is easily annoyed and I understand when things don't go as planned. However, this company is run by people who are completely incompetent and unhelpful. Stay away! read more

Not sure if it was my negative yelp review, complaint with credit card company or the BBB complaint but after more than 8 weeks they finally filled the order!!! While phone calls and emails resulted in ZERO responses, a few public complaints seemed to do the trick. read more

We had our GAF for ten years. He probably would have lived longer, but the cat knocked over the 1 gallon tank that we kept him in and our neighbor girl, who was taking care of the cat and frog while we were out of town, did not find him in time ( he dried out....poor thing). He was my son's, who received him when he was 4 years old, and now he is 14...so he understood. Keep the tank away from cats! The frog required very little care. We used spring water( a half a gallon at a time), and we cleaned the tank when the water was too murky and stinky. The frog ate independently, and we fed him turtle food that we bought at the pet store. It looked like the frog food from GAF. The frog is more fun than a fish, but not quite as fun as the cat! read more

I received my Grow-A-Frog African Frog as a gift when I was nine. I am now 37. He's still going strong. As this pet will outlive most other pets, parents, please add this to the equation when you are choosing this as an option for you kids! You will most likely frog-sit when they go to college. And perhaps beyond... I buy inexpensive amphibian food from the local pet store, rather than the kind this company sells. One, it's cheaper, and two, it floats, so if Frodgie (don't judge, I was nine) misses it on the first attempt, he can try again. He did escape one time about two decades ago, and had a midnight adventure hopping around our dining room. Never underestimate the tenacity of these little guys. Later I moved him to a five gallon aquarium, so he has more room to move around. And he sings. I hadn't heard him do it for months (he used to do it daily) and yesterday he started up again. I jumped up to go give him a treat (Pavlovian theory works for frogs, right?) and saw that he was stuck in the space between the glass and the rock in his aquarium. I set him free, and began to wonder if he deliberately sang in order to get my attention. Who knows. read more

Ah, Grow a Frog. This was the highlight of my childhood. I ordered a frog, or my mom did. I waited and waited everyday i talked to the mail lady about not leaving my frog in the mailbox and bringing it to the front porch so my frog wouldn't over heat. The mail lady thought it was so cute how desperate i was to keep my frog i haven't even received yet- alive. When that glorious tadpole arrived i had everything ready for him, two cute little shells and his rocks all set up with the clean spring water for his home. He quickly grew from tadpole to frog. I named him Happy Legs. He got so big! i played with him putting my finger above the water he would hop out of the water and try to eat it! I loved that precious frog. He swam back and forth messing up his neatly placed shells and rocks. He was noisy! I loved it. He eventually grew to big for his tube town home, i went to the local pet store and bought him a big 10 gallon tank, with a filter and a bubbler. I even got him some fish friends. one by one his friends started disappearing. I looked all over the tank trying to find the fish; then right in front of my little child eyes my frog ATE the last fish remaining in his tank. From that day on i started feeding him fish. He was so big and healthy, he ate about 4-5 fish a week. Then I wanted to get him a friend so i ordered another tadpole, and he ate him piece by piece. So, Maybe my frog just wasn't friendly because he ate or tried to eat anything that moved in his tank. After 10 long wonderful years he escaped from his home and dried out under the bookshelf, I cried and cried. Devastated.There was a wonderful toilet bowl service. We have ordered from this company in the past, with no problems. We have even contacted them and spoke on a few occasions, with no problems. They offer a lifetime guarantee on their frogs, but unfortunately they have no desire to fulfill it. After placing an order a couple of months ago, I waited and waited. Knowing it is winter and the products may be delayed until the weather perks up a bit, I was not worried, at first. However, when I began trying to contact them to get a status update on the order, they refused communication. They will not answer the phone, or via email. They will not offer either a refund, or the replacements we offered. I am not sure what happened to their service, but they are most definitely not the company they once were. If they have indeed gone out of business, or anything of the sort, they should be removing their site from the web and no longer taking orders. I am severely disappointed in the (non) service we have received from them. We were not even looking for a refund, merely that the guarantee be upheld and our replacements that we ordered be sent. Even a bit of communication on their part could have prevented this review as well as a report to the BBB. I am very saddened to see what has happened over the years to a company that was once magnificent. read more

I chuckle when I read the reviews from people whose frogs have been alive for up to 10 years. Grow-ver celebrated her 30th birthday on April 15, 2015. She was a birthday present for my daughter, who happens to have a developmental disability, and was re-gifted to my by my daughter in the late 90s when my she (my daughter, not Grow-ver) moved to a group home. When I go on vacation, the cat goes to a kitty B&B and Grow-ver goes to a kindly neighbor. Word of advice to people who have had their frog go off to froggy heaven because it broke out of the glass prison aka goldfish bowl, and dried out.... cut an oversized piece of the netting from the bag that oranges or grapefruits come in, place it on top of the bowl with plenty of extra length all around, and double or triple rubber band it. The heavy rubber bands the are used for asparagus in the super market work well and last a long time. Use more than one rubber band because sooner or later they dry out. With Growver still alive at 30 and counting, I could not give any less than 5 stars.The only negative was when we purchased a companion shortly after we raised Grow-ver into froghood, her companion quickly died, and each of the several replacements also died quickly. So we got philosophical and decided that Grow-ver being an only child was just her froggy karma, or something like that. read more
