The front older lady's seem nice and talkative with most! The atmosphere was off. There were multiple customers bumping into me and expecting me to move out of the way. I wanted to try two items on and asked an employee in the front if I could use the fitting room because it's courteous. When a woman showed up and took the only vacant fitting room, the employee allowed her and gave me a pat on the back. I continued to wait and another employee comes up and waits with me it felt uncomfortable because there were no employees prior watching the fitting rooms or other shoppers. I felt a bit followed as well though I had no bags or intent to steal. I'd like to add the atmosphere was predominantly white and I am a young woman of color. There's not a large variety of clothing for women but the kids, books, and antiques are definitely worth taking a look. I've worked retail for 3 years in different store locations so I understand when it gets busy it's hard to keep track of it all, but I also believe it's important to make things right. I do appreciate that this place is volunteer ran and if you're in the area it's a nice stop. read more

Stopped by the Thrift Box to donate a couple bags of clothes and take a look inside the store. The donation drop off is in the back with dedicated parking spaces, and the cheery volunteer was appreciative of my donation. The shop benefits the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford. It is a large place with clothes, housewares, home decor, toys, books, jewelry, and more. They have low prices compared to other charity thrift shops in the area. There were lots of Thanksgiving items and some Christmas decorations, too. The whole place was packed with stuff, but it all was clean and nicely displayed. There is no thrift store smell. They have some vintage items mixed in with the newer stuff, especially in housewares. It's definitely a treasure hunt in there. read more

IMHO I came by to donate some clothing last week. The lovely volunteers are ready and eager to help you bring your donations in and to offer tax receipts. I appreciate that my donations will 100% benefit the Lucille Packard Children's Hospital. After donating, we entered through the front door entrance to do some shopping! The store is always nicely merchandised, neat, clean and organized. No one likes to shop in a messy store! The volunteers are always friendly and happy to answer questions with a smile! I love dropping in to see what treasure I can bring home! read more

They have an awful management system. For 1/2 day off they only allow people inside in a bunch and without time limit so the wait is very long outside. They should print paper with 15 time and give it to people to be at the register at that time. Ridiculous management read more

I love coming here for unique dishes, love having people over for holidays and game nights! Have found quite a few cool footed candy/snack dishes, all at reasonable prices. Oh, also vases too... I am thrilled to write this update! I was in town and swung through for their saLes. Every single volunteer was praiseworthy! I enjoyed being there & making a $83 purchase. The store was completely packed, to the point it was uncomfortable trying to move around. I purchased this completely adorable, red, black & white, sequin dress with a bow on the back & little shoulder jacket, for my 3 yo, Great Niece. it was so cute the sales lady asked me to come in & show her a picture of my, niece, in it. I had a good time, this time. i do not think any of the volunteers that were there in, April, were there, yesterday. Margo, the mgr, is a nice lady. I watch her videos on, Facebook, since whomever it was that blocked me, obviously unblocked me, I'm glad. Margo, does a good job marketing their merchandise in her videos read more

This place is OK, but there are better thrift stores out there. On the PRO side, the store is large & has a good selection of a variety of clothing/shoes/housewares/toys/linens/etc. The staff is friendly & helpful, and the prices on regular merch is pretty good. On the CON side, they have a "designer" section that is WAY overpriced, and some of the labels they consider designer are a joke (I'm talking Talbots & Chicos). They also don't always take donations even during stated donation hours. And their sale days are chaotic; always crowded + a line, so I avoid those days. When I first discovered this place a couple of years ago, I never walked out empty-handed. But the past few times I've gone, I haven't found anything worth buying. To that end, I won't be visiting anymore unless I happen to already be in the area, as I live 45 min away. read more

Fully volunteer run upscale thrift shop benefiting Lucille Packard Children's Hospital in Palo Alto. The inventory changes every day and is completely dependent on donations from the local community. The volunteers clean and display items in an inviting way keeping in mind holidays and other calendar events in a timely manner. The shop is always clean and organized, which can be a daunting task at times. One of my favorite places to shop and, oh by the way, I have been a member for over 13 years now! read more

A terrible shopping experience if you are 1. black or 2. love to browse/shop and are moving too slow. Today was the worse of all my prior shopping experiences. Today the manager Lynn felt I was buying too much stuff so she approached me to cash out my items in batch. One would think that as a small thrift shop selling used items, a portion of the proceeds used to fund a local hospital, that they would be glad that I was buying a lot, but unfortunately, NO! As a general rule I find there are too many attendants/volunteers and they hover over one as one shops. It could just be me as I am black and they are giving me the "shoplifter" experience but they hover over me. That has happened in the past and I have asked if they could give me some "room" to enjoy browsing amd shopping. Today, as I was filling up my basket, the male store attendant came and asked if the full basket was mine. I said yes. He, not I, suggested that he take it up front to the counters. Since I have a bad shoulder I agreed and continued my browsing/shopping. Because I no longer had a basket I took up two more piles of clothes to add to the pile being held at the counter. My intent was to look at one other rack and then check out. As I was walking away from the counter a female volunteer approached me with a DEMAND that I pay for the items at the counter before continuing shopping. I didn't want to do that. Who does that? - insist that your CUSTOMER, BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT I AM, pays when you tell them to pay, or when it is convenient to you. I turned to her and told her "Please don't spoil my shopping experience". That is when she identified herself as the manager, not before. Now the spoiling of the shopping experience is a real concern at the Thrift Box. These are a bunch of retired women and a few men who think that they are doing God's work by volunteering and they rush you to cash out. They think they are being helpful but they are not. They are adding a rushed feeling to what should be a leisurely treasure hunting experience. I have tried to explain that to them in the past, but they change so often that there is a constant need to re-educate the latest overzealous volunteers. One is forced to say "not yet, I am still looking, thanks" to the constsnt, multiple enquires from multiple volunteers. It gets burdensome and feels rushed to the customer, at least for me. So today, Lynn decided to tell me how my shopping experience would go and I decided to ignore her suggestion. As a result Lynn decided to pull a Karen on me. There are 2 Karens white people like to pull on black people when the black person is not complying: 1. I will call the cops, or 2. I will ask you to leave (if you don't then I will call the cops is implied). It is the latter Karen Lynn pulled on me. Me who was just minding my own business browsing/shopping, enjoying my morning out, Lynn says if I don't do what she the manager says she would ask me to leave. For what, because I picked up so much clothes that you find inconveniencing you so instead of being glad and grateful that I am clear the racks for more space or that I am contributing to your hospital, you threaten to evict me!!!! How about you just leave me alone let me quietly shop and when I am satisfied I will come and pay and quietly leave. Ask any other volunteer if before Lynn spoke to me if I said a disrespectful word to any of them or and other customer today. The male volunteer approached me and took my basket to the front leaving me to happily burrowing through the junk clothes minding my own business. When i decided to cash out, it was Lynn who kept speaking to me even when I was directly asking Janet the person cashing me out questions about prices. Lynn demanded that I come where she wanted me to come and got mad when I said I prefer to stay and have Janet finish cash me out. She wouldn't give Janet a chance to answer my questions - the monitor facing me was not working so I asked Janet if she remembered to take 50% off. While Janet was responding Lynn interjected and told Janet so that I can hear "when she gets the receipt, she can check for herself." Is that the proper response of a non-provoking manager? When I held my peace Lynn kept pulling the Karen card by telling me that she would ask me to leave. How about you Lynn leave me alone let Janet cash me out? No, you are a racist and it goated you that I would not do things the way you want me to do them. Lynn even went further to come to my side as I cashed out to tell me that "my reputatiin preceded me." Oh, now it all made sense. Lynn's racial abuse of me by threatening to ask me to leave and if I refuse she would call the cops is not because of something I did today; it was because a prior time when I asked them to stop rushing me and hovering over me, asking me every minute if I am ready to cash out. I stand by my assessment: the attendants in Goodwill, Savers, etc don't hover. read more

Great place to shop! I originally visited because it's one of a very few thrift stores in the Bay Area that donates all of its proceeds to charity (unlike bigger chain thrift stores). Now I love this place and visit all the time. They have a lot of interesting merchandise and I've never left empty handed. I've gotten several great deals - especially on sale days. read more

Went in last week to see what days they take donations and let them know I had a lot of really nice clothing and shoes, they said they would love to have them. Returned the following Wednesday when they reopened and was abrunptly told they are not taking any cloths, did not even take the time to look at the quality of what I had!!! Not sure what changed between Friday of one week and the following Wednesday. Decided to stick with a more reliable center and returned to Discovery, both Branham and Los Gatos have always been happy to receive my donations. read more

Unfortunately I made the mistake of buying a Lennox Rosedale porcelain 54 piece dish set that is known to have unsafe levels of lead. I did not research it properly while I was in the store. This was my mistake. Please be on notice that they will place dishes and crystal that might have very unsafe levels of lead on the floor and they do not post any warnings. Gosh, I hope someone didn't get some tax write off donating this set. read more

Wonderful, friendly group of women that volunteer their time to help support Lucille Packard Children's Hospital. They always have plenty of volunteers working to assist you in looking at the jewelry and fine collectibles and letting you into the dressing room. Their new registers have been very helpful in letting you see each item being rung up. I have noticed that throughout the day they are consistently putting out new merchandise for customers to look at and buy. Only one time, last week when a very hostile, and entitled woman in the store that was buying piles of clothing and stacking them on the counters which made it difficult for others to check out and put their items on the counter. The manager on duty was very courteous and polite in asking her to check out the items so other customers could also use the counter to check out and then she can continue to browse after the transaction was done and items were packed and off the counter. She became rude, hostile and ignored what was asked of her. It was difficult to watch a customer be so non compliant and rude with women who are volunteers. Or anyone working in retail getting paid should never have to be treated so rudely. I was happy when I heard the manager tell her she would have to ask her to leave the store if she continues to be hostile and not comply with paying for her items and getting them off the counter. Terrible! But other than that, most of the customers shopping were very nice and courteous. Thank you Thrift Box for having such wonderful ladies volunteering and such beautiful merchandise! read more

This is an amazing shop. After several stop in visits, I signed up to be a volunteer. Everyone who works here is a volunteer. That includes, the President, Board Members, Managers and floor staff. All donations are cleaned and checked for working order. We receive some amazing donations from our generous donors and all proceeds go to Louise Packard Children's Hospital a the Teen Van. I cannot say how impressed I am with The Thrift Box. read more

Hands down one of THE best thrift stores I've ever been to in San Jose! The prices for all their items are true thrift store prices, unlike Savers and Goodwill nowadays. Went today and my friend scored a 43 piece dinnerware set from Pottery Barn for only $15! Everything is honestly incredibly cheap and the ladies that work there are so sweet and genuine. I scored a London Fog jacket here for only $3. Also, incredibly fair prices for fine china. Will definitely come back again! read more

I loved this Thrift so much I had to join and I am now a proud volunteer. After experiencing the inner workings of this store I am just amazed. The prices are very good, the dishes, pots, pans, glasses, figurines, etc. are all cleaned before being put out on the floor. The all volunteer staff work very hard to display, price, sort, and clean the donations. Every penny goes to the children at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital. They even provide money and clothes to Teen Van for children, some on the streets, in need of clothes. There is a designer clothes and shoe section where you can find amazing bargains on high value items. There are jewelry items nicely displayed with many sterling silver pieces. Some of the older posts are very unfair as we were closed due to Covid. I have never witnessed anything but kindness to our patrons. read more

Wow, was at The Thrift Box today and was it busy. The all volunteer women were working so hard to keep the lines short and trying to keep the customers happy. They even came out early to give everyone in line a small shopping carry all before they opened. Everyone seemed to be happy to be shopping there. There were a few questions regarding the jewelry cabinets as you had to wait in line to be helped there as well. Apparently it is a store policy that only one person can be helped at one time. I asked about it and the worker said that they have had to institute the policy as they have had several shoplifting events that they are trying to curb. She couldn't have been nicer about it, although I could tell she was stressed as she was being swarmed. They also had a 3rd cash register set up for credit card sales which expedited the long lines. Merchandise was clean but disappearing fast and the workers were always busy cleaning up and putting things away. read more

I donated to this store in the past: nice sellable clothing, some children's items, and housewares because it seemed like a good cause. I have also bought a few things here and there over the years but no longer have a desire to accumulate more things. But today, like some other comments i just read -- about being a person of color -- I was being watched very specifically by one of the volunteer workers. When I moved, she moved. She was trying to be discreet but stayed around me and when I moved to the next rack, so did she. She acted like she was looking at items nearby and it simply became too uncomfortable to shop. She came around to the side a few times to see if I was stealing. I was very tempted to ask her why she was watching me. It was infuriating. I left instead. Part of the reason why I was there was to look at a few items to know what they would charge as the plan was to donate more items. But not anymore. I am no longer interested in donating to this place, or being a customer. The behavior expressed by this woman assumed I was there to take and not to give. Charming, lots of knicknacks and fine china/stemware (not my thing), but also good clothing and housewares selection, and the clothes are actually sorted by size correctly (!!!). Quality items, well organized, but the main thing is the PRICES - very reasonable. I bought a vintage crochet lace bedspread, 8 feet square, that probably would have been hundreds of dollars elsewhere (and over a thousand on Etsy), for just $15. My new fav thrift store in San Jose. read more

Like Saver's on the cheap. The money goes to the children's hospital. Stuff is sort of sparse, but the place is maintained pretty well. The children's section at the front left near the entrance is organized pretty nicely, and have some pretty fashionable options. The accessories are at the register area, and there's a bargain bin nearby. I would totally come here to check out the housewares items. Really cheap stuff. BRING CASH. If not, you've got Wamu, Wells Fargo, and B Of A all along the street if you forgot. read more

My friend Sara (who I met because of Yelp) needed a cheap wedding dress so I met her at Thrift Box this past Sunday. Thrift Box was having an event where they were selling wedding gowns priced up to $75. That's right $75! And Sara found hers there for only $25. I didn't recognize any of the labels (quality wise they weren't really that great), but many had tags on them that showed they were originally several hundred to a thousand dollars. She suspected that a bridal store had gone out of business or given their clearance inventory to Thrift Box. Sara needed a dress, not for her wedding but for a Trash the Dress photo shoot. (Many people get pictures taken after the wedding where they're more or less ruining the dress.) Her Trash the Dress photo shoot is before the wedding (wisely I don't think she wanted to ruin her own dress anyway) so she needed a substitute dress. None of the dresses were in a style either of us would normally have picked. One of the dresses had a pretty beaded bodice but had a long, LONG princess-on-acid train. It was HUGE with tons of layers of undercoats. Sara was afraid she might drown if the Trash the Dress shoot was in water. Thankfully she found another dress that wouldn't drown her. At one point they ran out of dressing rooms so some enterprising brides-to-be pulled some clothing racks together to create their own changing room. The place seemed to be staffed all by sweet older ladies who were very helpful. I really love this cute little store. Though they only take cash and the cashiering is a tad flighty, the women who staff it tend to be super friendly and their merchandise is more often than not high quality for a more than fair price. I have and will be back. read more

Whoa, 1/2 off frames! CASH ONLY PEOPLE! Seriously good steals if you plan on sticking around and looking into the itty bitty corners of the store. At first glance, you may think it's nothing but old people stuff but this is not so! As I mentioned, the frames are really cheap (came out to $.75-$1.50 each!) and the random books they have can stir up good memories of the 70's and early 90's. They always have different stuff so I like to drop in and check out the new loot while I'm town. Plus, the ladies that work there are super sweet and are willing to look through the clothes and shoes with you if you're looking for something particular. They really look like they're enjoying what they're doing. Oh yea, and they use recycled shopping bags for your purchases. I came home with a Nordstrom Rack bag filled with old frames and my bf was like, "Dang, someone went shopping." Little did he know I only spent $4. Boo ya! read more

The workers here are probably the nicest people I've ever met. So welcoming and helpful! They're all volunteers so they are there for a good cause which makes the experience so great. 10/10! I've been to a lot of Bay Area thrift stores. Thrift Box has one of the best collections of very high-quality stuff (particularly for dining and living room) at giveaway prices. Volunteers are friendly ladies - the whole experience feels "classy." It is down the street from my accountant. I plan to return next year, if not sooner. Caveats: The book section is unimpressive, and men's clothing is minimal. read more

What's not to love about a thrift store who's proceeds benefit a Children's Hospital? I love it even more because the items found here are one of a kind and cheap! I have purchased quite a few items here that were in great condition and decently priced. I would have never found these items elsewhere for that cheap. I have purchased clothing for my baby for $1.25 a piece, socks for my baby for $0.10 per pair, and toys for $2. Their $1 golden books were also an amazing find! The ladies who volunteer are super sweet and have always been helpful when I had a question. Can't wait to come back and find some more gems for my baby girl. read more
