Went thrifting this afternoon and my first stop was Black and Brown. I'd never been there before and wasn't sure what to expect. Wow, what an amazing store. They mainly sell vintage and modern secondhand clothes, bags, and shoes for women and men, but they also have new pottery from a designer called Familiar. The store is spacious and carefully curated. There is no thrift shop smell and it looks more like a cute boutique than a secondhand store. You can sell your clothes there, too. There are two floors of women's clothes and a separate men's shop across a little courtyard in the back. Most of the customers when I was there were young adults of both sexes. The store was busy on a Saturday in the late afternoon. Fortunately, they have a dedicated parking lot behind the shop with plenty of spaces. The staff welcomed me immediately when I walked in. I was interested in looking at purses and they had quite a few vintage and newer ones from designers like Coach, Tory Burch, Kate Spade, and Dooney & Bourke. I didn't buy any, but enjoyed checking out what they had to offer. I didn't pay too much attention to the clothes, except to notice that women's pant sizes on the second floor only seemed to go up to size 11/12. If they had bigger sizes, I didn't see them. I kept driving by this store and finally stopped in yesterday. The store is organized and clean and I found the staff helpful. It took some time to find items that interested me as I looked through the entire store (two floors for women and one for men). Some items were over priced but you can find some good gems here. I love thrifting and I often go to downtown Fridays where a lot of vendor sell thrifted clothing. Black and Brown, they don't really buy stuff, it's a marketing tactic to get people in. It's not really a thrift store. The first floor selection is actually new things like candles and UGG bags. Selection is pretty good, prices are appropriate. It's not goodwill so don't expect a steal. Store is clean, smells good. I brought a couple designer pieces including Jeager Britain 100% wool jacket and a brand new dress from Cider (vintage mock-off brand) and I was told that it is out of season. Just sounds like a bs reason to pass on it. But what really seemed weird to me is once I brought the pieces, they asked me to set it on the table and the worker was just on her phone for a while. I had to ask her about the wait time for her to actually go through my stuff. I feel like I wasted gas and time. I have better luck selling stuff on Vinted. read more

March 10, 2026 After reading a recent article from San Jose Spotlight on Black and Brown, I decided to check this store out this afternoon. I was disappointed to find the place had an offensive telltale odor that typically stems from clothes not having been washed before placing them out for the public. There was little in the way of clothing for women and I found nothing that could be considered "vintage clothing." Wishing you all the best though. read more

I think overall this place feels very nice inside, spacious with 2 floors. There is higher end downstairs for women and another bigger section upstairs. More vintage vibes clean layout i appreciated. The first associate who reached out to me offered to hang all the clothes i was carrying. Then she disappeared maybe ended her shift. There was a new girl to help and her attitude was a bit snooty and fake nice with undertone of mean. It made me not want to buy anything. I grabbed 2 hanker-chiefs and a cropped top for $64 which seemed steep. I just didnt like the vibe of the sales associate and wouldnt be back. read more

There is an okay variety of options. This thrift goes for vintage, which you can see in pieces that are farther than Y2K. They have 2 buildings + an upstairs. They are clean, organized. Because it's vintage, it is on the pricier side, with very very few modern pieces. You can also sell items yourself. Staff was kind enough to actually look through it, and fold my items back neatly. They are picky with what they choose. Would only recommend for people who genuinely like real vintage clothing/collectables, other than that some items are overpriced just for being an old tee. read more

I had a really disappointing experience at Black and Brown Thrift Shop. I came in on a Sunday to sell a few items and was told they don't purchase on Sundays -- fair enough. I was instructed to return during weekday purchasing hours and was warned that since the items were out of season, the price might be lower, which I understood. I came back on a Tuesday, well within their stated buying hours, only to be met with an unwelcoming and dismissive attitude from the owner. Not only was I treated as if I was inconveniencing them, but I was also told I had somehow "missed the window," even though I was following their exact instructions. The tone was entitled and unprofessional, and it felt like they just didn't want to deal with me. It's unfortunate because I was hoping to support a local business, but based on this experience, I won't be returning -- either as a seller or a shopper as most items are severely overpriced compared to other thrift and vintage stores in the area. It's hard to justify shopping here when you can find similar pieces elsewhere for a fraction of the cost.. There are plenty of other shops in the area that treat people with respect and transparency. read more

Searched on reddit for the best places to thrift and shop at in SJ and this place was mentioned and it did not disappoint! This place is incredibly clean, organized, and have a great selection! Everything is definitely curated and you don't have to sift through things like you would at thrift stores like Goodwill. That being said, because it is curated, their items are on the pricier side. Disrespectful of customers' time. I decided to visit Black and Brown for my first time to sell some items and look around since I had never been in their store before. The employee working told me to put my bags on the shelf as she was currently working with another customer selling some items. Of course, no problem. So I set my bags on the shelf and walked around the store. The employee was chit chatting with a customer at the register about special drinks her bar makes. I thought this was the woman selling items but no, they were just chit chatting. I sit down at the selling area and wait. Then the woman who is selling the items returns to the selling counter, chats for a bit then says she wants to do a little shopping. So the employee halts her buying transactions with this woman and proceeds to go do other stuff when the phone rings. The employee answers the phone. It sounds like another merchant down the street got robbed and just wanted to talk. So they chat. And it wasn't like "Oh I have a customer waiting, let me get back to you", it was just a chat. Since the other buyer was still shopping, the employee could have started looking at my stuff. I had eight items. Eight items. It would not have taken that long. But there I sat. Then another employee comes in carrying a bunch of drinks. At that point the first employee could have said to the second employee, "Hey, I'm still working with this customer who is shopping. Would you mind starting this woman who has been waiting." But nope, I still just sat there. I took the time to come into your establishment, for the first time. You could at least take the time to act like you care that I am visiting your establishment for the first time. You know that saying about first impressions. Well, I'll never be back. read more

High end vintage store. It's definitely nice inside the pictures don't do it justice, but the strong smell of incense made it a big negative. This isn't a thrift store meant for finding great items at low prices. When you first walk up to the store there's a gate with an outside courtyard. You can rummage through stuff before entering. Women's on the first floor and men's upstairs. There wasn't a huge of men's stuff. Never interacted with anyone working there to be able to judge their service. read more

The clothes are on racks are organized like they're being sold at a store. I couldn't find anything I'd like/would wear, tho. If you do want to try the clothes on, there are fitting rooms. Def come here with consignment store prices in mind. This isn't Goodwill thrifting for sure. Popped by this place and really didn't know what to expect because the street it's on is a little sketchy looking. Parking is in the dirt lot behind the building. The inside is super clean, organized, and nicely decorated. Downstairs is bags and womens apparel and upstairs is mens. The staff were friendly enough, and the ones organizing the racks were super helpful, offering to hang the clothes we had in our hands up on a dressing room door. Bought a Patagonia vest that's normally sold for $120 for $45. So not cheap but definitely at a deal I would come again and I would recommend for a higher end thrift store. read more

Waste of time. I had a few sweater/jackets to sell and a Marc jacobs bag. As soon as I came in, the girl worker was surprised I had some things to sell. She told me they normally stop "selling services" at 6:30. I came in around 6:20 with 2 small bags. Lmao They offered me $23 for my quilted vintage khaki jacket that I definitely declined. She was interested in the Marc jacobs bag but then told me it didn't have the strap. After telling her it was inside the bag, she took another couple minutes and then ended up telling she'll pass because it would be "hard to sell" with the style. My friend wanted to come here to check out this place. Drove up and found the parking area and felt the car dip for several holes in the parking lot. If you have a low car I would be careful driving it into the parking lot. The entrance is hard to see if you don't pay attention but we found it and walked right in. The place is clean and neat. It was pretty quiet in there while I looked through the racks of clothes. I found a piece I really liked but it was too small. I found a lot of cool and cute pieces but many of them were size XS. I didn't realize the men's section was upstairs so I didn't get a chance to check it out. On my way out I checked out the jewelry and saw a cool watch I liked and tried it on. The girl helping me was very patient and helped me put on the watch. She didn't rush me as I looked through the different pieces which made my experience pleasurable. The watch was a good fit and looked nice so I bought it. I enjoyed my visit and the staff was friendly and fast. I will come by to see what's new and also check out the Men's section too. read more

I used to really love this place! I still love how organized and neat everything is set up. However, it's really a mixed bag whether they will take anything (if even it's in season and in very good condition). However, the last two times I've gone there within a couple of months it seems like they DO NOT TAKE or SELL any sizes beyond a "10-11" and most of them are small for those sizes. The store seems to be pretty NOT SIZE INCLUSIVE. If you're looking for a store that will be consistent with the items they will purchase from you and have a variety of sizes... you won't to find it here. My boyfriend and I went in here yesterday to sell some clothes, I'm a size 10/12 and large for women's and him size 38" pants and XL for tops and we heard the person purchasing clothes make a comment about the size of our items. When the pants in question were identical to some upstairs and what they listed as looking for online yet they did not take them because they only seem to care like 5-10 things if that in their "largest" sizes. His size pants are 38" for reference. If you're midsize, curvy, muscular or above a large... do not come here expecting to find anything but shoes or accessories. Because they are NOT size inclusive and seem to be pretty body exclusive and lacking range. I'm sorry. I used to love coming here. There also seems to be a high employee turnover over rate as we came on the same day and time and saw none of the same people. read more

I have been coming here for a long time and I always find something on my trips because they have such good selections. The main issue within the past couple of years however is that their prices have become INSANE. The last couple of times I have gone, I have found a nice simple vintage shirt and tried it in only to find out the price was $110+ FOR A WORN TSHIRT I GASPED. I come here atleast once a month and I am so disappointed by how greedy this store has become with pricing. Can not remember the last time I bought something in this store because any nice find will be minimum $80+. There aren't many thrift stores in San Jose, so naturally anyone who thrifts and lives here has probably been by this store at least once to check it out since it's listed as a thrift store on Yelp. I'll admit that the first time I visited, I thought it was a really cool place. The decorations are nice, the location is interesting--an all around hip store to shop at. I also love success stories from small businesses, and I was sincerely happy to see it doing well. Even though the employees working that day seemed a little stand-offish and everything seemed really overpriced, I liked the store enough to think about it when my friends who thrift would come to visit me. Time passed, and every time a thrifting friend would visit, they'd be put off by the lack of thrift stores in San Jose, as well as the steep prices and poor customer service at Black and Brown. With each visit to this store, it seemed like every employee working who was new to me was just as ostentatious as the last one; I hadn't simply had a bad customer service experience with one group of employees, but that the shop either looks to employee people who think they're better than everyone else, or that people who are hired slowly begin to project their self-importance unto all customers who don't spend hundreds of dollars a month here. With this in mind, I stopped returning, and simply stopped thinking about Black and Brown. Something about paying people to go through thrift stores--where the buyers are often people who can't afford to pay for clothing elsewhere--to sell those items at around a 700% increase doesn't sit right with me. It wouldn't be as much of an issue if the employees I 'interacted' with weren't such a pretentious group of people. What's worse than taking affordable clothes from people, trying to charge up the butt for them, and turning up your nose when they can't afford it? Not much in customer service. This growing disdain for Black and Brown was recently met with more poor interactions between customer and employee. They post pictures of new items they *procure* on their Instagram, and when I saw a poorly-cut, stained, bootleg polo crop sweater that they are currently trying to sell for $40, I was genuinely interested to know why they felt it was worth that, so I asked on the post. It wasn't offensive, it was literally, "why is this $40". Instead of a response, I discovered through my other account that my comment had been deleted and that I had been blocked. I had never commented on a single post of theirs prior, so it wasn't as if I was harassing them. Employees here seem like they can't handle negative input, even if constructive, and obsessively try to come out on top. Maybe I *just* *don't* *understand* *fashion*, but that was a perfectly good sweater--one that someone who couldn't afford a new sweater elsewhere has now lost access to. After reading their negative reviews on Yelp, I've gathered that many people experience bad customer service at Black and Brown, and that it's never just a single "bad day" for them. Suffice to say, I won't be wasting any more time with Black and Brown beyond the writing of this review. read more

I love the aesthetic of this thrift shop, but unfortunately my sister and I couldn't find any items that were like "wow what a steal!" They definitely sell a lot of items that what would usually be pricy (ex Nordstrom clothing). But with that doesn't come super cheap prices so we actually convinced ourselves not to purchase anything since we didn't love anything enough to spend that much money on it. I'll give this another try sometime though because so many people I know rave about this place! Shoooosh! Black and Brown is the best "thrift" store. I put quotations because it is a thrift store. It's more of a high end thrift store. You will find some good quality vintage clothing. They have an endless amount of clothes from woman's to men's. Men's Clothing The men's section is on the second floor. If you're looking for a nice button up shirt for your next vacation it'll be here. I just bought a pair of Doc Marten's for a reasonable price here. I always buy a pair of hoops when I'm here. I wish they had the super small hoops and I hope they'll have them again next time I'm here. They're constantly filtering out the shoes they get. You'll always run into a gem when you come here. Women's Clothing I cannot speak for the women's clothing. They have a huge selection here. The first floor you'll find all the jewelry and accessories. Everything from tops to bottoms. The selection is unlimited here. I do not know all of their sizings and I'm sure you'll find something for yourself. TLDR; Black and Brown is one of the goats of thrift stores. Really cute shop, they even have their own parking lot around the corner. It has character. As I opened the door, I was taken in by the yummy incense smells happening and a warm hello from the cashier. There are not a lot of clothes in comparison to Crossroads. That's okay, because it seems like at Black & Brown they are cautious in what they buy and they steam all the clothes to make them look nice on the racks. I found a dress that's really expensive in a specialty store in SF for $28. Kind of high for me, but since it's something unique, I took the plunge. I am in love with the building, think I'll visit when in the area. read more
