Whatnots and Doodads is a cute gift shop in downtown Willow Glen that sells both vintage and new items. They have lots of whimsical home decorations, kitchenware, linens, jewelry, figurines, soap, body lotion, and much more. The shop has a cozy cottage vibe. I visited there recently and thoroughly enjoyed slowly going through the shop and checking out all the charming treasures. One of the things I really liked was a Hazel Atlas children's tea set in pastel-colored milk glass from the 1940s-50s (see pic). I also saw a nice secondhand Kate Spade bag for only $42. The women working there were very friendly and chatty. I understand they get new inventory all the time, so I plan to go back soon. read more

I brought a basket that the store labeled as a Longaberger basket, but upon looking closer after I purchased it, it has no Longaberger mark, so it is just your average basket that is "Longaberger style." I trusted the label in good faith, and was deceived. read more

Called ahead to ask if they sell oddities, as i've recently been trying to sell a cat skull on behalf of my friend. The lady over the phone was super nice and said yes, the owner is in and to stop by and ask for her. Stopped in about 30 minutes later, and spoke with the owner and one other gal at the front. The owner was super rude and judgmental, initially saying the piece wasn't "real" because it was hand carved (Wtf logic is that? ) then went on to be super condescending, saying their customers "love their cats" and "wouldn't want anything to do with that". If that's not for your demographic that's fine! There's absolutely no need to be patronizing or imply anything about a hobby that differs from your own . read more

I love this place, it's got great gifts and greeting cards. The inventory is always changing, and you never know what treasures you'll find. Last visit I got a pretty windchime, a cute vintage purse and great body lotion, along with a few nice bday cards. Always worth a visit when I'm in the neighborhood. read more

Love! I wandered in during my Willow Glen crawl and was just taken by this place which boasts great prices, unique gifts and really friendly staff. They had some great Halloween deco, some 12 dollar portraits a la haunted mansion (which change when you move them to skeletons) which I'd love to just have for every day and a big Xmas 25 days of Christmas shutter box (which you place a gift behind each door every day). I think the cherry on my sundae however, was when I spotted the old style matches. Ya know, the ones longer than your finger? I love em! They also had a cute 60's recipe box that sorely tempted me, but la, I left it for those who actually cook! read more

This is a wonderful little antique shop like right out of a story book. I have been to many antique shops before but this gave a good vibe. They have a so many different little things that I can stay there forever. Most of the items are reasonably priced, some of them did not have any price tag and I had to ask the staff about the pricing. The staff was friendly too. Oh mah gawd! I love this place. It's like walking into some sort of time warp. The smell reminds me of old clothes and thrift stores though. LOL the essence of this place! There was random things from beautiful decors, old, old cameras, vintage clothes and even postcards from eons ago. :) I would come back for the old cameras and vintage postcards-- the postcards are written and post dated from long time ago-- it's even more cherished that way I believe. read more

I love this place! They have the most amazing items! I have bought an antique vanity and antique end table. My vanity was expensive in the high 300's. But it is solid wood and has the original mirror and has skeleton key drawers. One of those ill have forever pieces, so it was worth it. The end table i use as a night stand adorable that was only 22 buck's. I recommend this store,you can get lost in there. read more

When I walked into this store I couldn't help but think it was the kind of place that Nick's mom (so probably lots of moms) would love. It's full of really cool antiques and knick-knacks. In fact, I would say this is one of the best-named places I've seen in a while. There were dozens of things I could have purchased here, but I chose 3 simple postcards. One for my best friend that had an old-timey picture of a whale with water coming out of its spout that said "we're having a whale of a time!," one for Nick's parents of an old picture of Reno, and a third that is too odd to be explained, but really needed to be owned by someone that would put it on display. If you're out and about on a lazy afternoon or just looking for some cool what-nots and dodads I would definitely recommend spending some time browsing in this store. I fell head over heels in love with this shop upon stepping foot inside. The owners and their daughter are always so friendly and helpful. One particular vendor they partner with re-creates the most amazing shabby chic furniture! I have purchased decorative pillows, a coffee table, and a vanity table with matching seat, and still happily sigh over them every day. What I love most about this shop is that you never know what you're going to find. They always keep it fresh with new merchandise, which ranges for cute aprons, to apothecary jars, to big items like a shabby chic bedframe. Whatnots and Dodads makes me want to buy a new house just so I can decorate it. It has the most charming pieces and I love that each section of the store is owned by a different person. It's like a real world Etsy! Today I fell in love with a purple and gold stained, antique vanity dresser. It looked like it was fit for a princess, Rapunzel to be exact, and was only $225. They also had a white nightstand with a cabinet, also beautifully stained and only $125. I highly recommend this store for anyone shopping for furniture or home decorations. read more

Love this adorable shop! They have the most random antique furniture there. I just bought a winged-back rocking chair for my mom. It does need to be reupholstered but the price reflected that. It is a family run business. The older parent's daughter was working when I bought the chair and she was super helpful. I told her I had an obsession with turquoise jewelry and she promised to call me when they get some new stuff in. They get a lot of their antiques from estate sales and auctions. So if you don't feel like getting up at the crack of dawn on a Saturday to hunt around town for estate sales you can just go here and they have done all of the dirty work for you already. read more

What a wonderful neighborhood gem! My husband and I recently moved to the Willow Glen neighborhood and stumbled into the store totally unplanned one Saturday afternoon. We were looking for unique furniture pieces to furnish our place and boy, this place did not disappoint! They have an awesome collection of charming vintage items and we absolutely fell in love with a 1920s cedar chest and a white shabby-chic nightstand. Both items were truly one-of-a-kind and also very reasonably priced. The old gentleman at the cashier's desk was super warm and helpful too. We'll definitely be back soon :) read more

This place has many bobbles & treasures yet discovered. Very reasonable compared to others on the Avenue. Not so overly stocked that you can't appreciate what they have. I have actually purchased items which were so inexpensive I felt a bit guilty! The store is IMMACULATE! I love this little place. I love that they have vendors and the vendors are so creative. I have found great little trinkets, furnishings, and gifts. I love it. There are lots of things to check out. They have furniture "shabbified" and some just custom stuff. The prices are surprisingly fair for most of the vendors too! They also have vintage pyrex and corningware. Perfume, holiday decor, jewelry (TONS), and other things that you just can't describe. The owners are super sweet and kind. I love to visit here frequently because it is always changing. The antique and vintage items are the main reason I look in this store because that is the most interesting part. The last time I was here it was deficient on the good old things, and those were mostly in the back. There are, however,lots of interesting old books and decor items.There is also a lot of jewelry--old and new--in the jewelry case.There is often nice Pyrex items in colors you don't see too often, like dark blue.There are new "antique-look" items here and books;prices are about average for these things. read more

This place is like Wonderland to me. Very whimsical, totally engaging. I had a very pleasant time browsing. I had the good fortune of speaking with the owner and one of his dealer Mark. They were very nice and helpful. Gave me some discount on the 3 pieces of furniture I bought from them. I had one of the bigger and older piece delivered to my place, but unfortunately, after the delivery man left, I realized that a corner of the mirror was broken. I contacted Whatnots and Dodads and they put me in contact with Mark. Mark was very reasonable and refunded me part of the cost. He even helped me locate keys for that piece of furniture. From the one of a kind jewelry pieces to the fabulous painted furniture to unique treasures, I always find something I must have. There is a thrift store a few stores away so maybe he thought he was in the thrift store. At one time, Whatnots and Dodads was my favorite shop in Willow Glen. When my daughter was a student at SCU, I dropped by during every visit. I've purchased a few beautiful pieces, at what I would consider to be reasonable prices. Just loved the place.........However, an experience today really blew me away. I had an hour to kill before an appt., and one can easily spend an hour browsing through this boutique, The gentleman/owner(?) behind the counter greeted me as soon as I walked through the door.......O.K., very friendly. As I was leisurely strolling through the store, I came across a darling framed cherub print near the floor, leaning against a piece of furniture.......Hmmmm is that exactly like the one I already have in the closet at home? Not sure.....So I crouched down and took a pic of it. (I'll double check when I get home.) I then browsed along the wall to the back corner of the store. Hmmm......Do I see a hand-made vintage quilt in that stack of linens UNDER the table? Not sure.....So I crouched down (again) and took a look. Very nice, but a few too many stains. Returned it to the stack. As I stood up and continued on my way, the gentleman/owner who first greeted me was suddenly right behind me, making small talk about the rain. O.K.......He kinda surpised me, but was probably just being friendly, right? As I made my way in front of the counter, towards the front corner of the store, the gentleman/owner follows me, stops at the counter, and says, "We've had a lot of shoplifting here lately." (What? That was random!) Me....."Wow, that's too bad." He continues, "Yes, we have security cameras and they ARE working, but people still take things." Me......."Hmmmm.........That's really a shame. (Then it hit me.) Wait, I hope you're not INSINUATING anything?" His response, "Mumble, mumble." Could I have possibly misunderstood? No......I don't think so. This gentleman/owner thought I was, and just short of accused me of, shoplifting! So I thought, I don't need this. At one time, I was a regular customer of this establishment, and I haven't done anything wrong. (Other than crouch down and look at things that are displayed ON THE FLOOR.) As I decided to leave, two pillows caught my eye........The exact type of pillows I've been in search of for the last 6 months to match our (relatively) new sofa. But I wasn't absolutely sure about the color because the sofa is a weird shade of gray. O.K., swallow my pride. So, I took out my measuring tape and measured the pillows, and took out my phone and took a picture of them. (Like the cherub print, I'll double check when I get home.) Mr. Gentleman/owner, who has been watching me the ENTIRE time, says, "You sure are taking a lot of pictures." I looked at him and nicely replied, "I've taken two pictures. One picture of the framed cherub print because I'm not sure if I have the exact same one already at home, and one picture of these pillows. I would hate to purchase them, then get home and discover they're the wrong shade." His response......"Mumble.Mumble." I left this store so upset that I doubt I will ever return. I still can't believe it! During previous visits, I've seen numerous customers take pictures and measurements of items in the store. In fact, when my daughter was looking for a coffee table, the nice lady/owner helped me take a few pictures & measurements of a displayed coffee table, which my daughter actually ended up purchasing. I'm sorry if this business has had an upswing in theft. I totally understand the challenges of an independent small business owner. (Which is why I shop at independents whenever possible.) However, when Mr. Gentleman/owner reviews his camera film, he will see that I didn't take or even attempt to take a single item. And by indirectly accusing me of doing so, he has lost a customer. (Actually, two.......My daughter won't be returning, either.) Really sad. One star for the beautiful vintage, antique, cottage, shabby chic inventory and one star for the nice lady/owner. read more
