I used to love going to see my Doctor Dr. Karen P. Gonsalves-Wetherell who cared for me for over 20 years with no problems. I was told she was promoted to Director and ever since being assigned to Manisha Nerkar my health has been a nightmare. Everyone in her office I have encountered including her (with the exception of Rosie) have been disorganized, incompetent and extremely rude. They denied filling out FLMA paperwork only because she refused to read it and go over it with me even though they made me do a teledoc appointment for that exact thing. On the call when I got emotional because she would not listen to what I was saying, she says maybe you need something for depression! Please do your self a favor and stay far away! Searching for a new primary now. read more

I have been going to 2 diff Medical Assistants since I moved to Sun city West.. I was seeing Dr. Doan who was wonderful before I moved. They are not personalble at all. I am older and used to the dr caring about the fact that I had breast cancer, etc etc. Talked to me about it everytime I saw Dr. Doan. I would not recommend this place to anyone if you just want to be another number. I found out that Dr. Doan has now left as of March so I am going to try elsewhere... read more

Dr Trinh Doan was my mothers doctor for years. She did an excellent job with my mother, who had a myriad of health challenges particularly in the last five years of her life. Our family is grateful for Dr Doan's care abs recommend her for your loved one. read more

Boy oh boy did this place go down in a ball of flames. I have been a patient here for over 22 years and I do not know who bought them out but their customer service sucks now! The only way to get through to the office is through an 888 number where you have to leave a message if you need a doctor or nurse. Once I got a guy who barely spoke English and couldn't for the life of him figure out what I was asking-literally just needed the office hours, lol. God forbid there be an emergency, like I had a few years ago where I actually called a local number and talked to my dr's nurse and was seen 10 min. later by my doctor. I don't think you'd get the same service now! Not only can you not get through via phone, but if you send a message via the portal (email) they don't get back to you for 24-48 hours. The front office staff-one woman in particular- are rude and have no business being in the front office. Each time I've been in there she has just been a total b**** to me and all I was doing was dropping off and then picking up a physical form for my daughter to participate in sports. ‍ My doctor's new nurse is one of those people who you can tell are just miserable with life in general. The few times I've had to talk or see her she is so rude and nasty! I'm so very sad that I'm gonna have to move on, because I was one of those people that highly recommended my doctor in particular. She has great bedside manners and knows her stuff, I mean I've been with her over twenty years and used to go even when we had insurance that they did not take. I was willing to pay out of pocket because I love her! Lastly, the kicker was having an appointment they made for me, because apparently they wanted to recheck my blood work from my physical I had three months prior. I go in to the appointment and the rude nurse asks what I'm being seen for and I say "You tell me, y'all are the ones that made this appt." she doesn't say anything. So my doctor comes in and goes thru a few things and proceeds to tell me I have a b12 deficiency. Are you for real right now!! I had to spend thirty dollars and two hours of my time to be told to take a vitamin! I'm out!!!! read more

If you're looking for timely in courteous service from A to z stay away. Dr. Kimberly Brandstetter is amazing however the staff really sucks! I'm not sure exactly what other words I can use to describe the patient experience at this office except it sucks! good luck getting someone to pick up the phone, if you opt to have the system call you back when there's someone available you might get put right back in the same queue or better yet sometimes they pick up and hang up. you will not get your lab results they will not communicate to the doctor timely if you have any information to provide and the messages via the portal get filter to someone prior to them going to the physician so basically your message is in the hands of the middle person who's incompetent. I blame the leadership of this organization for not investing the time and or resources necessary to properly train, staff and reinforce customer centricity. I do not recommend anyone schedule an appointment with this office or any of summit medical group affiliates as they do not seem to put the patient first... I think due to the high volume of people that they push through the system like cattle they may not care because the money is coming in. I recently switched over to this practice. Though I've been bringing a family member for years. There system change is awful. Can't get through by phone and if I can leave a message, no one calls back. The wait to check in is horrible. Worse part, for years, the family member I was bringing has dementia. But, the staff at doesn't want it to "insult" the elderly, so they use "memory loss". Trying to get that family member whose elderly and sick "State assistance," and she did not qualify because we did not have the proper diagnosis. So sad. I feel like they need a "greeter" to help people. The wait is awful and people don't know the new process. A greeter would at least maybe help explain what's going on and why there's a wait. And stop the delay from the front desk ladies trying to check people in. read more

I've been a patient of Dr. James Carpenter going on 6 years now. Despite having moved out of the west valley 4 years ago, I've kept Dr. Carpenter as my primary care provider. Part of that is the fact that Dr. Carpenter is still conveniently located to my office in the west valley. But the biggest and most important reason is the quality of care he's provided me over the years. No poor bedside manner issues with this guy. Not only is Dr. Carpenter professional and competent, but he's friendly, attentive, and humble. Dr Carpenter has always given me the full picture and a full range of options for whatever is ailing me. If he doesn't have the answer, he has referred me to a network of specialists who usually do. He has always made me feel important and welcome in his office, no matter how benign my illness or discomfort might be. As Carpenter is a popular Doctor here at Thunderbird, scheduling appointments can be hit or miss. Oftentimes I'm able to see him right away if I need something. Whereas other times I'm referred to one of his Physician Assistants if Carpenter is booked up. More often than not, he's been available. And I've never had an issue with his staff whether its billing, scheduling, or even his lab techs. If you're looking for a good primary care provider in the west valley and Thunderbird Internal Medicine accepts your insurance, I can personally vouch for Dr. Carpenter. Village Medical, used to be Thunderbird Internal Medicine. I wrote a review in May about how TERRIBLE my experience has been since Village Medical took over my doctor's practice. I got a phone call from a nice woman who assured me they were addressing the issues and it would improve. IT HAS NOT IMPROVED. IF ANYTHING IT IS WORSE THAN EVER! My doctor is great but still, you must go through a call center for everything or go online. THE CALL CENTER NEVER GETS THE MESSAGE RIGHT if you try to leave a message for your doctor. I have tried to get a refill for a Rx since last spring and still don't have it. I have gone through the call center and requested on line. Unless you use the option of sending a message directly to your doctor in the portal THE MESSAGES NEVER GO ANYWHERE. There are other options, appointment, Rx refill, and so on, but you never get a response using those. I AM GOING TO LOOK FOR A DOCTOR WHO IS NOT AFFILIATED WITH VILLAGE MEDICAL I guess, so I don't have to deal with the incompetent call center and a less than useful patient portal. We are new to AZ and Thunderbird Medical was recommended to me. In the past year the services have they offered us have generally been adequate. I will save my staff and doctor observations for another review. However, the main problem so far has been billing and company buyouts and Corporate name changes. In the one year they have had 3 different company names and 2 (or more) different online Patient Portals, the Billing system has been changed once and some of my records were not transferred correctly. All these corporate and LLC 'changes' can cause the patient to re-register online, call the Billing Dept about proper insurance billing and confusion at the admitting counter. All of this has happened to me, numerous times. With good reason I feel a bit insecure about the security of my personal records, I do hope the 'new' Village Medical Corp (or whatever this medical corporation is calling itself this month) is using modern technology to safeguard our private info! I hope Thunderbird Medical, Summit Medical, Village Medical, www.SMGMedicalAZ , www.Athenahealth, www.healow, et al, will get their act together soon. read more

It's nearly impossible to get an appointment without waiting a month or two and when you do, expect to wait at least an hour past your appointment to finally see the doctor. This place used to be great when it was Thunderbird Internal but it has since switched to Summit Medical Group and the service has just gone way downhill. read more

Switching Doctors..I have been a patient since 2011 but they are too busy and have too many patients to handle. If you are planning on getting a flu shot, don't! My husband and I scheduled appointments for a flu shot at our doctors office, Dr. Doan and Dr. Carpenter. We figured it would be quick with an appointment, not! I waited 35 minutes and after 65 minutes my husband advised the front desk personnel at Dr. Carpenters office that he wasn't waiting any longer. Worst practice I have ever been to. The front desk ladies chat out loud like it's happy hour. There is ALWAYS a wait to see my doctor, Dr. Wetherell, who by the way, I had to wait to see 3 months to see as a new patient. Anytime I was sick, I called to make an appointment and there was always at least a two day minimum wait. Once I needed a med refill and she was out of the office. I couldn't get me refill because none of the other docs can refill for her patients. She really does take the time to listen when you can actually get in to see her. It is honestly easier to go to urgent care. The best thing about TIM is Jennifer, Dr. Wetherell's MA. Now this is the last straw. Apparently, I had 2 unpaid bills which totaled $40. I knew I had one bill for $10 and I had said I would take care of it the next time I was in. Well the next time I was in it slipped my mind and the women at the front desk (of course) were too busy horsing around to ask me to clear my balance. Supposedly Margie (maybe their billing lead) sent numerous letters which I never received and called once. So, I was "dismissed " from the practice (I just found this out today). I called today to clear everything up simply because I knew it had been outstanding. The $40 is now $80 because it was sent to collections. I suppose this practice has enough wherewithal to get an entire collections agency set up to get their beloved $40 but cannot pick up the phone to call me to collect a balance. It is truly appalling and sickening that a practice can be so money hungry and greedy. Furthermore, all the billing department had to do was call. I don't understand what is so hard about that. I will be sure to advise anyone I know to stay far away from this office. It's simply not worth the hassle and no one should be subjected to their lack of patient ethics. read more

I don't recommend this clinic at either location. Previously when it was Thunderbird Internal Medicine the staff were great about responding to calls or messages. Since changing to Summit Medical Group the clinic has gone seriously downhill. They have too many patients & not enough staff. They don't answer the phone when i need to call, consistently. They will only return a call when it works for them, & it doesn't matter if it's bad timing for the patient. If you don't answer while you're on the toilet, you may never get through. Their referrals department is a disaster. They made a mess pf my referrals for much needed testing, misinformed me that the VA denied all of the referrals. Weren't using the appropriate authorization for care for billing and referrals & consistently blamed the VA for their own lack of knowledge. I didn't get tests i needed for 4-5 months due to problems with this clinic. I asked for other referrals for a Rare Condition & the staff made random referrals not even checking to ensure they were appropriate for my conditions & then tried to refer me to random providers who don't treat my conditions. When i voiced my concerns to the MA, the reply was "We have OTHER patients to deal with". So basically they are too busy to help their patients. Do yourself a favor and seek care elsewhere where you will actually GET the care you need. After I complained about the staff to the neurologist Dr. Johnson, his MA informed me that he wants me to see a different doctor who is a neuromuscular specialist instead of him and of course they didn't know where to send me. They submitted a referral to the wrong department recently and now it's delayed. It's one mistake after another & they have no time for Patients. Poor management. Don't recommend this clinic. *UPDATE* I have to share the latest. I have not been a patient at this clinic for over 6 months. I'm a Veteran & my insurance covers all bills, yet these people are billing me for $50. I have called billing at least once per month & they still can't get it together. They say they're fixing the problem but they don't! Then they sent it off to collections! Even after I call monthly asking them to resolve the issue! Then a few weeks ago I speak with the billing manager Steve & he says someone will call me the next day to resolve their mistake, but of course NOBODY calls me at the number I left them! This clinic is a disaster. If I were a medical provider at this clinic I would run away real fast before I started losing patients! I would never step foot in this clinic again. I have a rare disease & the only neurologist in the state of Az treating it is at THIS clinic and I STILL WON'T GO THERE because they are a disaster! You will wait 20 minutes just for a staff member to answer the phone! Not because they are busy, because they are slow and unorganized! Dr. Darry Johnson (neurologist) with Thunderbird Internal Medicine is very caring, smart, down to earth and has a wonderful bedside manner. In my experience, this is a rarity in neurologists. Before I saw him I had been to several neurologists for sudden onset of limb weakness. Not only had they been unable to diagnose me, but they treated me horribly. I don't know if they thought I was faking, lying or a head case, but I was always tested for one disease (and the same one at that) and then kicked out the door with no plan for follow-up. Dr. Johnson was a completely different story. From the very beginning he sat there and listened to my entire story from the time I got sick until present. I had a lot of different symptoms and different things happen to me and he did not interrupt me one single time - unlike every other neurologist I had seen. The other difference between he and the other neurologists was that he actually had differential diagnoses in mind. That's a very basic thing that doctors are supposed to have with any medical problem. He didn't just check me for one disease, he checked me for a few different ones. My case was so complex that tests were a necessity. I certainly didn't want a bunch of tests; I just wanted to know what was wrong with me so I could get treatment and get my life back. He ordered several, explained to me what each one was for and told me exactly what he thought I may or may not have. These were tests I should have had two months after I got sick (which at that point was almost a year later) when I saw the first neurologist. I was so sick I could not even leave my house unless I had a doctor appointment. Dr. Johnson is the best neurologist I have ever seen. I recommend him to anyone who is having trouble getting a diagnosis and/or finding a compassionate neurologist with a great bedside manner. He does specialize in Parkinson's disease, but that by no means is the only thing he can do. That was not my problem, and he was still able to help me. read more

My family and I have been going to Thunderbird Internal Medicine since 2007. This practice is always fast and efficient. You never have to wait too long to see your doctor the majority of the time. If you have an appointment you can rest assure that you are going to be seen on-time. Horrible process I had an appt they missed placed my paperwork and called patrons who's appt as after mine after telling me I was next they still called someone before me.... they needs someone whose has organized skills. I'll NEVER go to this place again. I have never left a Yelp review, however, this just has to be said. Dr Lucas has been my Grandmothers PCP for a year or so. I have never seen or met a more rude, confrontational or inept Doctor in my life. Kim Lucas actually confronted me in her office to the point I had to ask her why she was "yelling at me"? I had gone to the office to review my Grandmothers extremely high sugar levels. They were consistently over 300! Alarming. And Dr Lucas was glaring at me while I spoke to her nurse, she overheard me telling the nurse I'd like an Endocrinologist to see my Grandmother. Dr Lucas came over and she snapped at me. She proceeded to tell me adding another Doctor would "complicate things"'. I was shocked at her lack of self control and understanding that high blood sugar levels are unhealthy and my Grandmother needed a specialist. Also, Dr Lucas never returned calls. One time specifically I had called Dr Lucas about my Grandmothers Bladder Infection, and she never returned the call. I then had to take my Grandmother to the ER. The ER Doctor explained to my Grandmother & I that sugar was spilling into her urine, because her "sugars were too high". These high sugar levels were causing her a reoccurring bladder infection. Dr Lucas was simply not knowledgeable and also lacked concern. I text Dr Lucas from the ER and Dr Lucas told me to not contact her on the cell, that I had been texting too much. This made no sense as it was my very first time texting Dr Lucas. I also informed her my Mother and I had been trying her for the past week and left messages with her office staff. Dr Lucas was consistently rude, and obviously confused. My Grandmother was also extremely uncomfortable having to go see Dr Kim Lucas. And after my experience with her, and her awful attitude I understand completely. We will be looking into a new PCP. read more

Nearly impossible to schedule an appointment and even get someone on the phone unless you have an entire day to spare being on hold, and another day to spare waiting for your appointment in the lobby the day of. Unreal. I saw Dr. Kim Lucas for a few years before I had multiple less than satisfactory appointments with her, and finally one where I left sobbing. I went in for my annual physical (mind you, this was after I had a severe leg fracture and was recovering from surgery, still on crutches), and was told that I was teetering on the edge of obesity, based on my BMI, and I should really get on fixing that. First of all, BMI is bullshit. There should of have been way more factors taken into account. This was before she did any other blood tests or any real tests to tell me if there was actually even an issue. Not to mention, I hadn't been able to walk, let alone exercise, for 3 months at that point. I left the appointment sobbing as a young, impressionable 20 year old girl, already negatively affected by the diet industry and unrealistic beauty ideals of today, and now feeling completely dismissed and attacked by my doctor. Every appointment, she had one foot out the door ready to move on before she even BEGAN to take the time to address any of my concerns. It's one thing to be dismissive, it's another to be so nonchalantly hurtful and irresponsible to young patients. Shame on you as both a woman and a doctor, Dr. Lucas. You can ABSOLUTELY find better. read more

Dr. Felix is wonderful, however, their telephone system is horrid. You can never get through (usually the wait time is over 30 minutes). The system tells you to use the portal. The portal response is from someone who knows nothing about you. It's very frustrating. Then if you miss a call back from a real person and miss the call, you are back to square one - having to write in the portal. read more

Since Summit Medical has taken over you might as well be at the DMV. They do not treat you like a customer whatsoever. It took me three weeks to refill a medication I've been on for 20 years. Family have been seeing Dr. Edgecomb for over four years. As mentioned by the previous poster, he has left this office. A "Dr. Thomas" had an available appointment for a family member last week. No bedside manner, didn't listen, had an attitude-COLD as ice. Wow, if she's already like this as a new Dr, just think what she'll be like in 10 yrs. No thanks! If you are new to here as a patient or someone who is new and is more on the younger side then maybe this place might not be for you. I been coming here since I left my pediatrics since I am not longer until 18, at first I noticed a couple of problems -The front desk staff isn't really that friendly only if you get someone in a nice mood which is most likely never. They seem to always be in either a grumpy mood or really stressed, it creates a very negative environment. But the thing I did noticed is they tend to treat older folks more nicer since most of the staff at the desk is about in their late 40s it seems. -Scheduling an appointment, depends on your doctor's availability but from what I heard and seen on other review sites is that it does take awfully a lot of time and effort to try and get one appointment, either the doctor is booked out too far like 3 or more months OR there is just no doctors available, for as long as I been their I hardly seen my actual doctor (maybe like 2 or 3 times a year) I always have to get an appointment with a Nurse Practitioner. So if you tend to get sick or need to see a doctor right away normally they do not see you only the MA or NP Other than that the office is really clean and soothing. read more

When you can't even get past the rudeness of the receptionist to make an appointment... no thanks. I have called twice to make appointments with Dr. Lucas who I used to see at her old practice in Tempe. The first time the woman was rude to me but I got scheduled. I had to call back (48 hours in advance of my appointment) to cancel because I ended up having to work that day. Although I understand that is an inconvenience she was inordinately rude about me cancelling, questioning my reasons why and being snarky about it. I just called again trying to make an appointment, she asked if I had seen Dr. Lucas before and I said "yes at her prior practice" I got a condescending laugh and a response of "well you'd be a new patient then, our system is down so you can call tomorrow." Tone of voice makes a big difference and clearly they (she) either doesn't understand that or doesn't care. Very disappointed to leave a Dr I like but I don't want to deal with condescending BS from people no matter what their job title is. read more

That could maybe be acceptable if all you needed was a physical. But what if you are sick or even worse have a lump or mole that needs looked at? I had to wait 30 minutes on hold just to make an appointment. I should've just hung up and called another doctor office. This office is very busy and that's okay if the providers can keep up with their patients but they cannot. I went in for a serious issue and was told to try a new medication and come back in a month. That appointment was in January and the pharmacy still hasn't received my prescription. I called the dr office and left multiple messages and even went on the patient portal and messaged my dr directly so I can get my medicine and nothing. Before the merge, the office responded to a call back in a very timely matter. This week I have been waiting for 3 days for a call back. I have had nothing but horrible experiences with Thunderbird Summit Medical Group. Where to even begin. For starters, it is nearly impossibly to schedule an appointment for the office never answers their phone. I have tried to get ahold of them for days. The only way to get through to them is by getting on Patient Portal and leaving them a message and they will call back hopefully that day if not the next. Second, when they do finally call you back, it is nearly impossible to get seen immediately I had to wait days to get seen after attempting to get ahold of them for days. I hear this is a very common problem with this office from reading others Yelp reviews. I am switching PCP's immediately as this office does not put their patients first. I would not recommend this office to anyone as it is very inconvenient to schedule appointments and the staff is not friendly. read more

As a new patient, the front desk staff was absolutely horrible. First, when trying to schedule, the girl could not get my information correct and it was a 35 minute long conversation while i was at work. They also did not specify which suite my appointment was at, since this group has 3 suites, so i went to the incorrect suite for my first appointment. Then, after finally scheduling an appointment at 7:30am, they called at 7:15am as i was pulling into the lot to tell me the doctor had called in sick and the next available appointment was with a male provider, which i specified i did not want. Then she tried to schedule me for an appointment later in the day. All of this would've been fine if she had any apologetic tone or offered an apology at all; but she had the exact opposite tone. She acted as if it was my fault that the appointment was cancelled and rescheduled. Then, as I'm standing there waiting to be helped, the front desk ladies chatted about their weekend plans instead of doing their jobs and taking my paperwork. Additionally, when you search "summit medical group" on google maps, the incorrect address comes up. While i have nothing against the actual providers of this practice, their office management and staff are incompetent and rude. I have been going to Dr. Brandstetter for several years. The practice has gotten too big and the front office is a mess. It takes forever to get an appointment, the office staff is not responsive and up until this last eighteen months or so I was actually recommending this group to friends who needed a primary doctor. I don't know what I am going to do, I really trust Dr. Brandstetter but I can not deal with the lack of professionalism in the front office or the over crowded situation that this practice is currently in.
