Hot early summer evening in Redding, Calif.; we entered the nearly full Thunderbird Lodge parking lot, found a space, and approached the office to the sound of children frolicking in the motel's smallish, L-shaped swimming pool. Suddenly, I wasn't so sure this was the divey, retro motel I stayed at 20 years ago where, at the time, I felt mildly relieved to have escaped unmugged, and/or unraided (mistakenly, of course) by narcs. The fondest memory of my past visit was the lodge's proximity to railroad tracks. The Amtrak station is a block away, but I recall the trains sounding as if they were roaring along and blasting their horns just outside the bathroom window. The nice lady who checked us in confirmed that the passing trains can be rather loud, so I asked for a nonsmokers' room closest to the tracks. However, the lodge is being steadily remodeled by the new owners, and all the old windows have been replaced by modern vinyl frames and noise-deadening panes. Moreover, it appears that maybe a few new Market Street buildings have sprung up over the years that might redirect railroad racket. Curses! I don't know how many trains might have passed through town overnight, but one thing's for sure: Garbage collection at the lodge begins at about 6 a.m. Friday, and that WILL wake you up. read more

Wasn't sure about staying here from some of the reviews, but once we got here and settled in, I knew I made a good choice. Checkin was super fast and the front desk folks were very friendly. Our room looked like it was recently remodeled and was very clean. The mattresses felt a little soft, but I still got a decent nights sleep. Visited the breakfast room in the morning and they had coffee, and some fruit and cereal and stuff. The usual. So I can't complain at all. They lied that $62 was something like a 1 bed price. In fact, it was their official price at the time when I called and I never asked for 2 bdr. On the phone, receptionist never told me about 2 bdr. My family ended up booking a room at the Thunderbird at the last minute when we discovered that our planned hotel had some serious issues. What a hidden gem we found! The check in process was quick, long enough for the friendly and helpful clerk to program the key cards and give a quick review of the amenities. Our room was nicely updated, but still had a cute retro vibe that went with the whole property. It had a small fridge, a flat screen TV, lots of outlets and plenty of bandwidth on the wifi. We had ample space to unload our van and set up a playpen. The mattresses and box springs were encased and there wasn't a speck of dust on the room. Our kids loved the pool, which is quite cold, but perfect on a hot day. Breakfast room had good coffee and a nice spread. The other guests were mellow and there was a family-oriented feel about the place. There is a crazy-good Mexican restaurant basically in the parking lot and a 24 hour doughnut bakery on the same block. Downsides? The neighborhood outside the parking lot was slightly seedy-looking, a little loud (you can hear traffic, trains, ambulances, and life flight helicopters intermittently), getting a parking spot near our room was a challenge as the place was fully booked. After reading some of the reviews, I was skeptical but glad we chose to stay here. The room was clean, the only reason why I am only giving it 4 stars is bc the carpet was dirty. My socks kept sticking to the floor as I walked around and when I laid a towel in the floor it literally stuck to the carpet. Other than the carpet, the head sheets were clean as was the bathroom and other surfaces. There are quite a few restaurants and bars to walk to nearby which was a bonus after spending over 8 hours in a car. I spent (1) night at Thunderbird Lodge, and will be making many return trips. I arrived at a busy check in time, and helped myself to some complimentary water while I waited. I was given a room on the lower lever, and found parking right outside. It was a great spot, near the pool, office, and breakfast room. The room was clean; I used all the amenities (fridge, shower, a/c, tv) and like that they had a iron/iron board, desk, and additional table. It wasn't as quiet as other hotels, but this I believe is due to the location, and I still slept well. Breakfast was complimentary, and about what you expect from a continental breakfast. The owner/operator was nowhere to be seen, and the door to the office was locked. After I rang the doorbell, the owner appeared, but had trouble unlocking the door. Once we were in the room, we found the heater was very noisy and the shower was not working well. We were surprised by all this, because the rate, $300, was much more expensive than other motels with better amenities. read more

Nice clean older style motel in a downtown area This is an older style motel with a small bathroom (shower only) and a little open closet area with the A/C unit on the wall.  The room is clean, bedding is nice, towels are thick and fluffy enough.  The mini fridge was nice sized and powerful enough to freeze my ice packs overnight.  The wifi signal was strong; every room has different login id and password and you can connect up to 4 devices (I thought we might run out but wasn't a problem)..   The continental breakfast was reasonable.  besides the bathroom being on the small side and the chair a bit flimsy, the price was very reasonable.  We would come back again! read more

The desk staff was friendly but the bars on the windows and such lets you know they are not located in the safest part of town. They are close to other businesses and food so that is convenient. I grew up in Redding, my Mother working at the Lounge/Restaurant near by. I use to have permission to swim in the pool there. So it seemed right to stay there; if going down memory lane. For the most part the room was perfect. But the smell was to much! I understand under Covid19 businesses having to go above and beyond while cleaning. But to use what smelled like a whole can, or more, of Lysol spray - even on the bed and pillows, was sickening. The smell will be how I'll remember my stay; unfortunately, I won't recommend the motel, as long as they poison the rooms with full cans of Lysol Spray! read more

BED BUGS- Health Dept confirmed I stayed in room 216 for 3 nights in early July, 2017. I got eaten alive. I won't go into all the details, but lets just say that when I notified the Thunderbird Lodge a few days later, they had a less than desirable response. Jay P., the GM, wrote that "After thorough inspection of the room, we have found no evidence of bed bugs. We extended our investigation to the adjacent rooms as well and have found no evidence of bed bugs. At this time, I am wondering if you are allergic to some of the detergents used to wash the linen. I have personally experienced bumps and rashes while staying at other hotels since I am sensitive to detergents." Keep in mind, I had asked for a report from a professional inspection company. They REFUSED to do that. So, I reported it to the Shasta County Health Department. The Health Dept acted quickly and a couple of days later, they called me and confirmed that the room had bed bugs. They forwarded me the report. This is public information, you can call to confirm. Mr. Patel (nor any other employee from this establishment) has never contacted me again after the Health Dept Inspection. No apology, no notice - nothing. Had this hotel taken immediate, professional measures to remedy this situation, I might not feel the need to share this story with other travelers. But their unwillingness to do anything about the problem when I reported it is worrisome. I understand that any hotel is likely to have this problem at some point, but to refuse to get a professional inspection until the Health Dept is called is not honorable and is, in a word, deplorable. read more

Super clean and nice for the price, great staff! We loved our stay here and would do it again if we are ever in the area! Felt very safe, ac blew cold, shower was clean, sheets felt fresh and clean, close to cool stuff and great food. Ran into a street concert at the food truck park a mile down the road and had a wonderful time listening to music! Would recommend! The only downside is that you hear train horns and sirens from the ambulances sometimes at night because it's close to the train station and hospital. read more

Started out thinking this place seemed decent... My partner and I checked in, put our stuff in the room and started exploring Redding. We got back to the hotel pretty late, only to find there was no parking available. We pulled over to call and ask if they had overflow parking anywhere. To which the "manager" responded. Parking is complimentary and not paid so it's not guaranteed. He suggested we park our new car on the side of the road, where there were no parking signs from 10PM to 6AM. I told him we didn't pay to park on the side of the road only to be ticketed. So he directed us to park in a restaurant parking lot...which also had signs stating we would be towed if we weren't customers for that restaurant. So we parked there and decided to just pick our battles wisely and call it a night. (Note that he was not nice about us asking for parking either of the times we had to call to ask where we should park) So we make our way into our room and crawl into bed, I noticed an almost sandy feeling on my legs and toes. So we pulled the blankets and sheets down to discover all sorts of debris on the sheets...as if no one had changed them. And a larger brown object that resembled rat feces. At this point I was done and over it. So we started grabbing our luggage, no sooner than I lifted my suitcase I see a cockroach scurry out from under it. When we went to drop our keys off and leave he continued to be extremely rude, did not offer us a refund, and he also lied to our hotels.com agent and said there was no manager available....after telling us he was the only manager. If you value cleanliness,respect, and kind hotel staff DO NOT STAY HERE. We are now at the Oxford Suites on Hilltop, similarly priced (9 dollars more than here). Everyone is super professional and really nice. Spend the extra money, and save yourself from a night of sheer agony and frustration. Jay (manager) if you're reading this...you have no business managing a hotel. We were trying to be super understanding and you met us with nothing but rudeness and were entirely unapologetic. Redding is exactly half way between our former home in So. California and our new home in Washington. With our SUV packed to the gills with all our valuables, we needed an old style hotel where we could park right outside our room. We planned on taking most of the things out of our car and placing them in our room overnight for safekeeping. What was left in our car we wanted to be able to keep any eye on. When we called to make our reservations, we talked to the day manager, Jay and expressed our need to be parked right in front of our room. He told us he'd place a traffic cone in our spot to make sure no one else took it before our late arrival. We made good time and arrived a couple of hours early. When we arrived, my wife moved the cones while I backed into our space. Within a minute, a man showed up to ask why I was parking there. It was Jay protecting our spot. He didn't know it was us. He thought someone else was stealing our space. I was surprised that he followed up with the cones in the first place. In this day and age, people often promise one thing while doing another. Not Jay. He's clearly a man of his word going so far as to defend my space when he thought an interloper was taking it. We could not have been more impressed with a Jay. What integrity and honor. Very impressive. As for the hotel and room itself. We're glad we chose the Thunderbird Lodge. The room was clean and well appointed. The bed was firm and very comfortable after a long day driving. There is a large refrigerator, a microwave oven and a coffee maker. The air conditioning worked well which was good as it was nearly 100 degrees still at 7:30pm. The WiFi was easy to access and fast. The parking lot struck us as being very safe even though the hotel is in the middle of downtown. I guess it's because it's downtown Redding and not downtown LA. This is a nice, comfortable, safe hotel walking distance from anything you might need. At $79 it was amazingly affordable. We highly recommend this hotel. We couldn't be happier with the Thunderbird Lodge and plan on staying here again next time we're passing through. read more

Traveling through on our way to Portland and looked online for a nice place to stay for the night. The reviews were good and the price was right. We got to the hotel late and there was no problem checking in. Or room was great, room 103 on the first floor. Easy to get in to from the parking lot. Parking was not as easy, but the gentleman in the office told us a "special" parking place that was not marked as such. The motel has obviously been well remodeled. Nice updated bedding, furnishings and crown molding. Well done with an upscale feel. Bed was hard to me, but some like the more firm mattress. Good water pressure and nice toiletries. Air conditioner works well. Continental breakfast till 9:00 am was fine and included oatmeal, bagels, yogurt and fruit. We will stay here again! read more

OK I'll give them the Thunderbird retro sign for their old motor hotel though the rooms are not really retro but clean and new so that's a good sign as well. They are renovating the place as there are more rooms towards the back that they are working on. I loved being able to just grab my stuff from the parking lot and put them in my room turnkey style. They allow dogs and charge you a minimum of 10.00 though it was not that great for where a dog could do his business. The location itself didn't thrill us. It appeared sketchy and I expected to see Thunderbird bottles scattered around. As an aside here, we did go to the awesome Sundial Bridge which is 2 miles away. read more

My boyfriend and I stayed at Thunderbird Lodge two weeks ago for just a day, as we were heading from Washington state to Southern California. I definitely wanted to write down the pros & cons of this hotel, for future guests to know ahead of time. Pros - you won't hear a lot of noise, as long as your room is on the same side as the office; the parking lot is safe; the rooms are very clean; the rooms have a good-sized fridge, a microwave, and a desk; the restaurant in the parking lot is SUPER good and so is Heavenly Donuts (right around the hotel, open 24 hours); the continental breakfast is really good and there are a lot of items to choose from (starts at 7 a.m.) Cons - I had a couple questions for the man working behind the counter, and he just seemed annoyed; the pool's not open in March; the Wi-Fi in the hotel room wouldn't stay connected for a long period of time. read more

I wish I could give this place 0 stars. I stayed here a couple years ago pre-renovations and it wasn't that bad so I gave this place another shot. They must have placed us in the noisiest room possible! When the person above us walked around the room (at 5 in the morning!) or even shifted his weight, our ceiling sounded like it was cracking. When he turned on the shower, the pipes sounded like they were about to burst. Basically, if you value sleep, DON'T STAY HERE. What's worse, I spoke to the front desk the next morning about the experience and he said he'd issue a refund as long as I contacted Orbitz. When I spoke to Orbitz about this experience they tried to issue a refund from the Lodge and the front desk would only authorize a 25% refund. The establishment is super shady and do not care about customer service, don't stay here! And if you still end up choosing to stay here, do not stay in room 207! read more

Hey, it's your basic $60/night motel. Don't expect much. Room was clean, bed was comfortable. The biggest negative - it's near the Amtrak station, and their whistles woke me up at 6 AM. We picked this place because it had 4 stars on yelp. We couldn't be more disappointed. The website photos are obviously photoshopped because that is NOT what we experienced at the Thunderbird Lodge. This is nothing more than a busted down motel 6 quality. Paper-thin walls where you will be woken up by the numerous trains passing by blowing their horns through the night as well as the loud guests at the pool (because there are not regulated pool hours - so we were woken up multiple times around 2 am by the partiers). We got no sleep during our 2 night stay. The rooms need some serious work and the bathroom is extremely tiny. Yes there is a microwave and a fridge - which is nice, but certainly doesn't make up for everything this place truly lacks. The continental breakfast consists of bread for toast, cheap Danishes, over-concentrated orange juice, coffee, water, and a 3 cereal selections. About what maybe you would expect for a continental breakfast I suppose, but I could have done without the mold growing on my daughter's Danish. So we ate out instead. Needless to say we won't be back. There are plenty of other options in Redding if you just spend $10 more. read more

Exactly what a motel should be... Clean, nice rooms; hot, good pressure showers; clean, comfy bed and safe. You can tell Jay and his family take care of this place. It is run professionally with helpful staff. They were all quick with a reference for breakfast or dinner. Love that I could squeeze in some laundry. The decorations of the rooms is nicer than it needs to be which is lovely. We were traveling north and used Thunderbird Lodge on our way up and were pleasantly surprised. Then a week later, we had a blow out on the 5 about 30 miles north, changed the tire and needed to wait until morning to get the big truck tires. We knew we would make it to Thunderbird and we're staying two nights to take care of business. It's nice to not have to worry about that in the middle of some other stress. read more

Two stars are for their outstanding customer service and graciousness. We arrived early and very tired. While they were very busy cleaning rooms they worked fast on our room so that we could lay down. We arrived on a Thursday at 11 a.m. and had been driving since 8 p.m. the night before thus no sleep since the Tuesday night. The room was spacious, clean, and everything functioning well. AC, big flatscreen TV, cable, microwave (we don't use em) mini-fridge, free wi-fi, and ICE machine! We will absolutely stay here again if we travel up that way again. Happy to support this old-school - updated - independent hotel on the historic route! A nice walk to local restaurants and brew houses in Redding like Gorilla Bites and Maxwells. In the morning they had fruit, oj, coffee, cereal and some bagels and cream cheese along with the standard processed danishes. Nothing organic or unprocessed for breakfast so we enjoyed our own greek yogurt and granola. Also there is a starbucks just one block to the west and north. read more

I stay here when traveling between home and Portland or Seattle. Great customer service and clean comfortable rooms. Next door to La Cabana Mexican restaurant open 9-9. And there's a 24 hour donut shop on the corner by the lobby that has great coffee and food but you'll need to walk a block for a good cappuccino. A great place for under $90. Holiday Inn Express is double. Only down side is the air conditioner is at the back of the closet close to the ceiling. You have to move a chair and stand on it to adjust controls.
