My friend recommended Thundercloud's meatball sandwiches. This was the first Thundercloud Subs I have been to, and it was soooooooo good. Mmmmmm.... My only beef with this place is that they play their music way too loud. Don't read this and get this feeling that it's a terrible place to eat - i've always enjoyed their meals & i've been eating T.S. for a couple of years now. I was actually up north on business and was waiting to hear back from a business manager before heading out - I was on my phone and walked into the store. I was probably waiting for 4-5 minutes before anyone was actually seen. BOTH employees were hanging out either in the back or taking a break outside on the side. It took the younger male about 60 seconds before he both noticed me and to finally head to the front. Didn't acknowledge the wait i had experience , just solemnly washed his hands and waited for me to order - the second employee now also present. There was 1 other customer in the store - who seemed about halfway through his sandwich and it was a clean store. So...giving me a blank stare , I initiated the order - i suppose that was my cue - a blank stare. I ordered a wheat turkey w/ guacamole & olives. I guess because I didn't pay first - I was still getting the blank stare....I was hungry and didn't mind being patient. I repeat what I had wanted (plain & simple) , and returned to my conversation........as the sandwich was being put together ; the older male employee began pointing down at the sandwich (was that my cue ??) - i'm seeing it through my peripheral vision / was he implying that I needed to tell the sandwich maker what else ? I ordered : Turkey , Guacamole , Olives ..........what other help did you need from me ! I make things easier for others - yet here is my conversation being interrupted by an employee who was not to be found a few min prior. As I'm paying with my debit card - the old male then has some cynical remake about the bank i'm using.......and it's features ------ WHAT ??? It's not that hard to atleast be an employee - but acting professional isn't even a requirment. By that I mean - if you just do you job and leave your personality at home ; then you wouldn't be an inconvience for a paying customer. It seemed like the guy taking our order was trying to be friendly, then when we said this was our first time at Thundercloud and he asked where we from, we replied moved from Los Angeles. His response was "imagine that..." all snarky like. The sandwiches were just okay. They didn't really stand out in any special way. BF ordered the Roast Beef and Avocado. I ordered an Austin Club, but was given a California Club. I do not know if that was intentional or not. read more

One of the best subs I have ever had. I am not really a sub kind of a guy, but this place makes one of the best subs for how fast and cheap they are. I recommend getting the New York Italian sub if you like spicy subs since this is the best thing on their menu. The soups are a hit or a miss, but who comes to a sub place to get a soup? I came here 25 minutes before closing today to get a sandwich after getting off work. I get there and the open sign is off and the place is being cleaned up. One guy starts walking towards me to take my order when the other from the back says that they're "all out of bread". The guy stopped in his tracks and went back to to cleaning he had been doing. I saw they had bread and even so, thundercloud is a tight operation and I doubt that would ever happen. I still love the subs, but that was bull and I had to eat Wendy's because of it. read more

Love this thundercloud! It's so easy to get in and out and they always make my sandwich to PERFECTION! I am a huge fan of the veggie delight on wheat, with cream cheese, add pickles and jalapeno, don't forget the thundersauce! Good food, just remember to go inside at this location. If you go through the drive-through, they'll cut you off and you'll get what they make you (has happened 3x). Even when it's dead at 3PM. Maybe everyone hates working the drive through? Anyway, it's Thundercloud, so the sandwiches are great, but I've been to better/more friendly locations. read more

I'm going with the literary two stars "Meh. I've experienced better." Everything was just about average. I almost always order an "Italian" sub where ever I eat subs. I've only ordered that one (NY Italian) at ThunderCloud. For whatever reason, I just don't like their Italian sub! I can walk easily to ThunderCloud, but if I want a sub, I drive farther to get a better one. For fast food chains, my favorite is Quiznos. Jimmy John's is better, too. Any sub I've had in the NY area (not counting Subway and Blimpee) is better. With that said, I have no actual complaints on the quality of the meat or service. All average. The bread was also average. Just pretty plain, but not stale. read more

Man am I going to miss this location after we move. I might drive 15 miles out of my way JUST to go to this one. The staff is always friendly and very fast. The line can be to the door and I guarantee you won't be there more than 15 minutes. The menu never changes but they are my comfort foods I've come to love. Nothing says "you'll be ok" after a hard day like my chicken salad on wheat with sprouts instead of lettuce. Tip these fine people well. read more

Solid sandwiches - you know what you're going to get, sandwich after sandwich, year after sandwich-filled year. Local. Fresh. Delicious. Not to mention that Thundercloud is probably the ONLY local sub sandwich chains that has catchy jingles on the radio. Come to think of it, I don't think that I have ever heard a truly catchy jingle from one of the national sandwich chains. Anyways, nothing really says Austin quite like Thundercloud. Second time to visit this location - if you want a milder, gentler, lifeless Thundercloud - then this is the location for you. The employees talked in very quiet tones (almost library-ish) and void of any life. The sub was good quality (as it should be this location's quality I found to be the same as all the other locations I have been to over the years). If you are a fan of the tuna sub look no further than Thundercloud. The best ever. Fresh, generous portions served up in a friendly, relaxed manner. I think what I like about Thundercloud is the complete lack of pretension. They make delicious sandwiches, period, and have been doing so for years. I will confess I am a creature of habit and the tuna is always my choice. I sometimes crave it because I can't make a tuna sub this good at home and I've never gotten one this good anywhere else. On whole wheat with provolone. I tried the corn and green chile soup at the slaughter location and that was delicious as well. I have eaten at several locations over the years and I have never been disappointed. Give it a go. read more

I have been going to this location since '99. I have really enjoyed it most of the time. My favorite item is the Office Favorite. I get it every time. The last 10 times or so, I have only been happy half of them. Today for example, my egg salad was like spreading mustard on a sandwich. I could not even taste it. I even took off the top bread and I still could not really taste it. If I go to Garden Spot Deli down the road, I never have this problem. Egg salad should not just be a spread. It needs to be thicker. By the time you have bread, cheese, bacon, onions, etc. you can not taste it. I really like egg salad, so I will be back or try the one on Parmer Ln. If this location does get better, I will change my star rating. read more

If I were rating the food alone, I would give this particular Thundercloud 3.5 stars. The menu is consistent, as are the ingredients, though they aren't super high quality, but that's ok because the prices are fair. I have been eating Thundercloud for YEARS as I am an original Austinite and I have always enjoyed the food. I would also typically give this place 4 stars for their customer service, as the people who work there are usually quite nice, but I had an experience recently that has made me rethink the value I assign to their customer service. Simply put, they got my order wrong, and then did nothing to make it right when I confronted them about it the next day. I ordered a veggie sandwich, and I asked them to add Tuna. I paid for the tuna of course, but when I got home, there was no tuna to be found. This was at the end of a long day mind you, and I was so hungry and happy to be home with my girlfriend, that I was not about to go back up there and ask them to correct the order after just fighting rush hour traffic to get home for the day. I figured I would go back the next day, explain the situation to them, and ask them for the same sandwich, only this time they wouldn't have to charge me for the tuna. When I explained the situation to the guy taking my order, he essentially treated my like a liar. Unfortunately I never got a receipt from the gentleman who took my order the night before, so I couldn't prove the mistake on paper per se. I was hoping to get some sympathy and understanding as I am/was a regular customer, but I got quite the opposite. The guy told me that I needed to take it up with the person who took my order last night. Really?? How would you propose I do that. He said there was nothing he could do for me. I won't be going back again for a long time. In the restaurant/service industry, customer service should come first in my opinion. If a customer is wronged, then you make it more than right. They did just the opposite, and made a bad situation worse. This shows poor management in my opinion. There should be protocol in place for situations like this. read more

I haven't been to Thundercloud subs in years. I had a bad experience with the one at the intersection of 2222 and 620 which made me shy away from the delicatessen. By chance I went to this Thundercloud subs location. Maybe I have never noticed this before but there are more options and choices than the last time I've been there. I got the Italian on wheat. The large size is actually a medium and thankfully its priced like that. The meats were good but not great. The thundercloud sauce was good and a nice touch to my Italian. The place is very friendly and inviting. The staff were nice and caring about making my sub the way I wanted. However, when comparing subs to other sub places in Austin such as Delaware subs (overpriced by very good), Jersey Mike's, and others it does not stand out. It's lacking the better ingredients, the better bread, and the sizes offered. I will more likely go back again since this place is close to my house and offered a good experience but I will not rush back. read more

I've eaten at a bunch of Thundercloud locations. What is there to say really, decent affordable food, mediocre service, slow preparation. I used to come here all the time but the idea of dudes with dreads and hairy knuckles preparing my sandwich with no gloves grosses me out. That being said, the employees here are generally nicer and more polite than many of the locations in town. It's right down the street from my job and although not my number one choice for lunch and I'll continue to give them my business. read more
