East Side Pies is across the street from Toy Joy and when I had some time to kill I went to ESP since I was feeling a little peckish. I've been fortunate enough to go during their BOGO slice special so it let me try two of their slices. The pepperoni was pretty good, which isn't my go to for slices but between a veggie slice I'll take that. The other slice they had available was, for lack of a better term, square sausage. The slice was good! The texture reminded me of pho meatballs which is a good comparison, the flavor was mild but had that springy texture. My most recent visit, I only wanted once slice and it was a quiet weekday so I ended up trying their plain slice and have to say that it was a decent slice with a fair amount of flavor. I love the crunch of this pizza. All their pizzas are thin crust, New York Style pizzas and they hold up and don't flop. I do wish their pizza sauce carried a bit more of the herbal and garlic flavor as the cheese was expected to carry the entire pie. The venue reminded me of a 70s style diner. It was very clean and well kept. They have a variety of hand held desserts such as brownies, cookies, bars. They have a decent array of local beers to choose from as excellent pairings to the pizza! My family and I love the thin style pizza at East Side Pies as it gives us more ability to enjoy the delicious toppings without filling up so quick. Today we got a 18" SMORS which was plenty for us and we'll enjoy the rest later while watching football. This location on Burnet is closer to us and has friendly and efficient staff. Silly old Samuel C. had plain old tomato sauce on his pizza. They have it. They serve it. It is an honest homemade respectable tomato sauce. But that is like going on a date with the greatest sexual athlete in the world and insisting on missionary position. * * * That said, my missionary position pizza was pretty good. I got anchovies, cherry tomatoes, roasted onions and feta cheese, to go with my tomato sauce and mozzarella. I inhaled the whole damm thing. We placed a pick up order here as a late night dinner date and we were fortunate to arrive just before closing! Don't have much of an opinion on the service since we just went in to grab the order but they were nice enough. There is parking outside the shop, which is good! My boyfriend ranks this place 4/5 - he got a 14 inch black olives and pepperoni pizza. He loved the thin crust aspect to it and thought it was delicious! I rank this place 3/5 - THAT BEING SAID I am lactose intolerant so my only option was to opt for the dairy free pizza. I did get garlic and pepperoni on top to add flavor to it as well. It was okay; dairy free cheese is hard to get right and had a bit of an aftertase. I probably wouldn't go out of my way to eat here, but since there isn't many pizza places in Austin with dairy free options, i'll give them brownie points for that :) read more

More pizza? I'm a fan of Buffalinas, Little Deli and Shorties pizza. East Side Pies joins these as a go to. Ambiance is functional. There's a good drink selection and some nice beers on tap. Servers are helpful and chill. They don't look down their nose at you if you just ask for water. I like pizza that you can pick up and this fits the bill. The crust is thinner than those mentioned above. I went for a second time the other night and enjoyed it even more. Next time I think I'll order a large and take some home. Good pizza with good ingredients.I got a small pizza with mushrooms, black olives, green bell peppers and Italian sausage. The crust is thin and nicely cooked, but still a little soft (in a good way). I saw little indentations indicating a roller was used to prevent the crust from bubbling up. I felt like the crust texture was similar to Mod Pizza, or The Blaze Pizza. The fact that it was just a little charred on the edges I think indicates a hot oven. All around a good pizza. I gave 4 rather than 5 stars because it didn't seem like it was tossed like in New York, and not cooked in a proper excruciatingly hot oven. For the New York Style connoisseurs, not quite perfection. Ever hear Black Sheep's "This or That" well it's a tossup for me as well between ESP and Home Slice which is right down the street. If I had to choose one, this would be my go-to pizza and Home Slice my special occasion, sit-down spot. Thin crust, original, great fresh ingredients and always hits the spot, the people that work there are so nice, know that what they're serving is special, and at least at the location off Airport, they're not trying to cater to a sit-down crowd. I really wish I could eat endlessly because I'd love to try their black bean, chimiurri, and pesto sauces, but it's usually just my small family so we stick to the red sauce. I'm fairly certain anyone who visits East Side Pies, including the pickiest of customers, will find at least one (or many) pizzas to their liking. The Airport Blvd location is small and has limited seating, but since most customers choose to eat their pizza at home, we often manage to find a spot and eat it there. East Side Pies is a BYOB establishment, so feel free to bring your favorite drink to pair with their tasty pizzas. You like them spicy? Try their homemade sauces. They're spicy alright, and good too.
