After a full morning of birding along the Texas Gulf Coast south of Winnie with a group of members from the Kingwood Photography Club, we were all hungry and so glad we stopped into Tia Juanita's before our drive back to Houston! You can't miss it, the brightly painted exterior with the name of the restaurant in big letters along the roof is impossible to miss. We arrived at around 1:15 so the usual lunch crowd had thinned out and we got a table for the 8 of us right away. Our server took drink orders while we all checked out the menu. Tia Juanita's Fish Camp serves a mix of Cajun/TexMex and great seafood all rolled into one! While we were tempted to order an appetizer of fried alligator balls, we opted to just proceed with lunch as we hoped to be ahead of early rush hour traffic back in Houston. I ended up trying a cup of the Seafood Gumbo, it was perfectly made with a decent amount of shrimp and other seafood, nicely flavored gumbo broth and a small amount of rice to pull it all together. After that I had the Shrimp Quesadillas. Other members of our group got fish or fish tacos, seafood enchiladas and other tasty things and everyone agreed the food was great with large portions. You want seafood? Well they don't skimp on the seafood in your order, it's virtually popping out of your tacos! Our server was great and took care of each of us, when she brought out the separate checks she delivered them to each person correctly and then returned credit cards to each without a mistake. The restaurant is brightly decorated, hardly a square inch of free space on the walls! This place is definitely worth the trip or pulling off of the freeway as you drive by. read more

We enjoyed our first visit to Tia Juanita a couple of years ago, so decided to visit again on a recent road trip. The place has a very kitschy atmosphere, which makes it fun. The place was pretty full the 2 times we visited recently, even at 5:30 pm. The first time we ended up being seated near the entrance to the rest room, so there was a continuous stream of people going by yesterday. No Bueno. We started with drinks, and ordered chips and salsa. Yes, they charge for this, but the chips are really good. On our first visit this time I ordered a blackened fish po boy combo, which was a half sandwich, fries, and choice of gumbo. My husband ordered a roast beef po boy with fries and potato salad. I love a good gumbo. The cup of seafood gumbo that came with my meal had plenty of shrimp and fish, but the roux bordered on burned. My sandwich was overly salty, but the fries were excellent. I had peach sweet tea, which was very refreshing. My husband enjoyed his beef po boy. It came with dipping sauce. There was no skimping on the amount of meat in his sandwich. On our 2nd visit this trip we asked to be seated in a quiet area. It was much better. We had salads... grilled chicken for him, taco salad for me. We really enjoyed our meals. If we return to Winnie, we will give Tia Juanita another try. But we'll be sure to insist on being seated away from the rest rooms. read more

We were a party of 8 and they got us seated quickly, which was nice. The service was very good as well. Now for the food. So good. Get the grits!! They make grits with a jalapeño cheese sauce and they are amazing. The Mexican butter with the hush puppies is divine. The fried green tomatoes were really good and their homemade ranch is amazing. The only negative thing I have to say is the potato salad was kinda lacking. But everything else was SO good. My husband had the fried oysters and said they were the best he had in a while. DISAPPOINTING! My S.O. ran out of tea. The manager & our waitress were talking with a nearby table. The waitress eventually walked by us so quickly that I couldn't get her attention. I was able to get the manager. He sent a refill via a busboy & never returned to check on us. That is horrible customer service. My friend & I ended up running out of water & never received a refill. The waitress virtually ignored us. My seafood enchiladas were extremely bland. The shrimp inside looked boiled & were meh. I felt like I need to ask for a shaker of Cajun seasoning. The beans were mediocre as well. My scallop was overcooked & dry. My S.O. always finishes his food & usually eats some of mine. He left at least half of a Redfish taco & said that it wasn't worth taking. Our friend had fried fish & shrimp. He liked Larry & Rita's Cajun TexMex in Groves better. I ate there tonight and had five things, three were great, two not so much. The boudin ball was very large and quite tasty and not overly spicy. The cup of seafood gumbo was teaming with shrimp and was delicious. The bread pudding was fabulous. Service was great and very attentive. Now for the not so good. The menu said they had a deep fried pistolet stuffed with shrimp eutoffee. Well maybe they usually do but mine wasn't. It was just a roll with the eutoffee spooned on top. The second disappointment was the fried babyback ribs. They were way overcooked to the point of being nearly burned. I couldn't eat them. To the restaurants" credit, they did take them off my bill. All this being said, I would probably go back again, just order something different. And would definitely get the bread pudding and gumbo again!!! read more

We came in as a large party during the holiday week and we were seated in minutes. The decor inside is fun with some upbeat music. So you have no choice but to be in a good mood and enjoy the vibes! Our server was Christina and she was phenomenal! For such a large party, she was very quick, attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. I ordered a small cup of chicken sausage gumbo followed by blackened shrimp tacos. Gumbo was good but not as thick as I'd expect the roux (spelling??) to be! The tacos were delicious! When I was asking about them while placing my order, she suggested them blackened of the seasoning and she was spot on. Portions were great even for the kids! Great place to stop for lunch if you're on the way to bolivar peninsula! It was also great for large groups- we had 9 people with us. Reasonable prices and big portions. The food is a mixture of seafood, cajun, Mexican food. Their dip sampler was really good. The fried green tomatoes were just okay and the stuffed mushrooms were bomb (especially if you like crab)! They had a boudin quesadilla which was different and awesome. Our waiter was really nice and let me sample the spicy beef before I got the spicy beef taco- it was mild and delicious. Absolutely one of the best restaurants that I've been to in a long while. Great vide, wonderful food, kick your butt drinks, and stellar food. Met the manager over two meals and definitely understand why this place is so good. I will never be close to Winnie during a meal without trying to eat here. First a Pro-Tip: if the parking lot looks absolutely packed, they still likely have room. This place can swallow a crowd. Sat both indoors and outdoors. Both are very fun, clean, and interesting to look at. The only off was at one meal we were too close too the musician so we moved outside. It turned out to be a perfect move. We were having a friendly meal and wanted to talk. If we were younger, roudier, etc. it would have been great. But they accommodated with little stress. They handled it way better than I expected. The drinks were just divine. My favorite was the Bayou Margarita. I highly recommend it and warning: they are powerful. I had some on the rocks and frozen. Both were spot on good. Over two meals I tried a lot so bear with me. First off were the appetizers. The Pistolette was a funky, fine, different taste. Highly recommended. The hush puppies were just ok. I think they made these way too long ago or they sat under a heat lamp too long. I've worked in a North Carolina Calabash restaurant and I have way higher standards for hush puppies. It's a simple job, you just have to not pre-stock too many. Finally, the seafood gumbo is SPOT on. Take my recommendation and start there. For the entree I tried a couple. The first day I had the trio tacos. I'm still shedding a tear over how good those were. The shrimp were amazing, as was the fish taco. The barbacoa was good, just not to the same level of the other two. The second entree I had was unbelievable: the seafood enchiladas. Cheesy seafood goodness. Oh, wow it was good. They have a nice little bar which is where I would be hanging out if I lived in the area. Otherwise it's a neat little place and very popular. Stopped here for lunch and loved the decor off the bat. The chips had some kind of flavor dusted on them and it was delicious. Queso and hot sauce was good too. My entree, the taco trio, was delicious and flavorful. The jalapeño ranch they brought with the food was very good and complimented the flavors well. Interesting mix of tex mex and cajun food. All in all not bad. Chips and queso was not the best ever, but not bad. The chips were very good. Cajun fried ribs were on point. Remember to ask for jalapeno jelly or ranch with them. I was a little sceptical of them when ordering, but was glad I did. The trio of tacos were filling and flavorful. I had grilled fish, fried shrimp, and roast beef. If you cant decide what tacos to get try the trio. I think the grilled fish was my favorite. The kids popcorn shrimp came with loads of shrimp and fries. I tried a few of each, it was a big thumbs up. The fried shrimp and fish plate was ok, but the fish were more strips than fillets. It was a small serving but packed with flavor. It had the right amount of spice and lots of shrimp in it although I wish there was more crab. No okra in this which is how I like it. Hubby got the trio tacos-grilled-which he said was good-he sure gobbled them up fast! I also got the small fried fish which was catfish which came with fries and hush puppies.
