This restaurant gave a proper dhaba vibe that we have in India. There was outdoor & indoor seating with a lot of play area for kids. There were some birds kept so the kids could be entertained. The food was simple and tasty. Not too oily or heavy. It was just right. We tried their peanut chaat, a great appetizer or side if you're having drinks. Some paneer curry, dal tadka, and naan everything was good. We tried their soya chaap, which was yum too. Kids had the samosas that were mild, crispy from the outside, and well-cooked. We have stopped here a few times on our way back to Houston from Lousiana. The food is amazing and the workers are very nice. It has a family/community vibe. Truckers stop here often. The parking lot is huge but be mindful that 18 wheelers will need space as well. We showed up one time during Diwali, and it was packed. We have had the butter chicken, lamb curry, and the cauliflower- all are very flavorful and delicious. We can't wait for our next Lousiana trip so we can visit again. read more

What a fabulous experience! It was cold and dark when I got there, so I can only imagine how neat this place is in good weather. It is set up so that you order and pay at a counter/window. Then they hand over your food from a different window (to-go orders) or a server brings the food to your table if you are dining in. I had planned to stay and eat, but it was freezing so I got my food to go. The lady who took my order was very friendly, and gave me a little cup of hot chai to drink while I was waiting. I waited in the indoor dining area and it was very comfortable. (It was heated, but I still didn't feel like staying). There were a variety of tables and seating options. There were regular picnic tables, but also some lower "coffee table" height tables with separate chairs. They also had a row of cots or hammocks down the middle of the room. I had never seen one before (see photo) but I Googled and came up with "charpai bed". Not sure how to use one of these. I suppose you could recline while you eat - each one had a small shelf at one end where you could set your food - or maybe just take a nap after stuffing yourself with that good food. I didn't get to see one in use. Some guys came in and sat on one, but they were just waiting for takeout. The food was tremendous. I got the Peanut Masala and the Goat Curry. Both were excellent. The PM was spicy enough for flavor but not painful. The GC was heavily seasoned but wasn't what I would call spicy hot. The goat meat was done in large chunks on the bone, kind of like an oxtail. It was difficult to eat it that way and I wound up eating it with my fingers, gnawing it off the bone. I also had the "Winnie chili naan" and it was so spicy it was painful to eat. Love it!! Highly recommended. I can't stop talking about this place. One caveat - the menu board does not have any descriptions of the food. Just a list of dishes and prices. Do your research online before you go. Otherwise you might not know what you are getting! Some folks enjoy that, but I am not that brave. Check it out. Desi Dhaba was recommended to be by an Indian friend who lives in Houston. The place is accessible through the West bound i10 access road in Winnie, making it a perfect stop for travelers passing through East Houston. The place reminded me of a roadside restaurant like those found all over north India, except cleaner and newer. There is seating outdoor and indoor, and service was very friendly. Now, the food... Delicious! We tried three different veg curries, garlic naan and the veg appetizer platter and everything was delicious. I especially liked the pakora, very fragrant and tasty. Desi Dhaba off of Exit 829 on I-10 in Winnie TX was a surprisingly wonderful experience. This is a place for an authentic experience of a typical truck stop style Dhaba in India. Owner Ajay was very friendly and warm and connected very easily. He was very helpful in deciding the order from a long list of both Veg and Non-veg options on the menu. The place is a large compound with a collection of overly colorful eclectic objects bordering on kitschy and eccentric but fun elements.... more Kindergarten than Indian village. The indoor dining area is large comfortably air-conditioned space with neatly arranged colorful tables and traditional Indian khatiya (woven coir cots). There's ample outdoor seating also. Children are sure to enjoy the several interesting birds in cages including a peacock. Gravel Parking is ample but and some maintenance. Food quality and taste were authentic and excellent. Both the Chicken and goat curries were well cooked and flavorful. Loved the freshly prepared garlic and butter naan. Meera rice was really good too. A wide variety of chilled beer is available to go with the spicy food. Overall, Ajay the owner has put in a lot of effort to make this a wonderful experience. You MUST stop here! Can't believe we stumbled into this authentic Indian roadhouse. What a delicious delight! Food was amazing and everyone was so very friendly. We got tandori chicken, vegetable curry, and garlic naan. They gifted us a huge plate of fresh pekoras. Taj beer was also great. Wonderful place for kids with the animals (peacocks, rabbits, turtle) and playground stuff. Great food and atmosphere, we will drive 1.5 hours to get there for a good dinner. I love the fish pakora, but our mixed veg platter was almost completely just peppers. Everything else we've tried has been good. They have some live animals to look at, swings to hang out on, and areas for kids to play, making it a great date night spot or family dinner spot. We have been here twice, and the ambiance is amazing. It reminds me of an actual dhaba in India. There is a lot of space and ground set up for a family to enjoy a nice time along with amazing food. The service was good. You order at the counter and go and sit anywhere, and they bring the food to you. Most of the food is brought in to go containers, so it's easy to take back any left overs. Tommy and I decided to spend the night in Winnie, Texas on our road trip to California. Nice surprise when we searched restaurants near our hotel and saw they have an Indian restaurant. We love Indian cuisine. We arrived and were surprised by the funky look of the place. There were only a few people when we arrived around 5:30 but by the time we left, there were about 30 people, many with children. Great play area for them. Looks can be deceiving. We stayed and had a fabulous dinner. Desi Dhaba D was very helpful taking and serving our food. They do not serve alcoholic beverages, but you can bring your own if you want.
