Tía Maria's Kitchen has officially earned a permanent spot on my list of favorite restaurants in New Orleans. I've ordered from Uber Eats plenty of times, but this was my first time actually dining in, and I'm so glad I did. It's a small, cozy spot where you can actually see the food being cooked. It gives "grandmas and aunties are in the back making sure every plate is seasoned with love," and honestly... that's exactly what it tastes like. This time I tried the beef liver with onions and bell peppers, and it was SO good. Perfectly seasoned, tender, and cooked just right. Can we talk about the rice for a second? I don't know what they cook it in, but it has to be some kind of broth because it is hands down some of the best rice I've ever had. Every grain is perfectly cooked. It's not gummy, not hard... just perfect. The refried beans? Absolutely incredible. I brought some home and literally had to hide my leftovers from my daughters because they kept trying to eat my food. I've also had their beef soup (the short rib soup), and it's one of my favorites. Their pupusas are delicious, the pickled cabbage that comes with them is addictive, and the sweet plantains are amazing. I ordered a mojito too. It wasn't super strong, but it was refreshing and paired really well with the meal. The service was excellent. Everyone was so kind and welcoming, and I found out they have free Wi-Fi and a rewards program, which I never knew because I usually order delivery. Honduran food in New Orleans? Definitely! After Match Day, we went to celebrate at Tia Maria's Kitchen. Love, love, love this cozy mama and papa restaurant. It was busy at lunchtime, but it gave us time to reflect on the hard work that led to two of my daughters matching in great residency programs. Two years ago, we also celebrated another amazing match day with a friend who flew in from San Francisco to help our family celebrate. I had the San Pedro Maduro. A deep fried plantain filled with veggies, black beans, avocados, crema and queso. I had mine with chicken. One of my daughters did hers with more veggies. Absolutely delicious! My family ordered a wide variety of papusas and tacos. Definitely add an agua Fresca. Loved the horchata, but the favorite was the moracuya. Blackberry and passion fruit. So refreshing and delicious. That stuffed plantain was amazing to my taste buds and the server was friendly. The ambience wasn't what I was looking for, it was brightly colored and clean. The manager or owner came out to say thank you for coming at the end of the meal. The server was very nice and engaged in conversation about how well mannered my grandson was and stated how lucky my daughter was that he ate everything and that her daughter was picky. Like a Reddit user once mentioned "Tia Maria's is a godsend to this planet" and I wholeheartedly agree. Everytime I post about this place someone asks me where I am. I've been wanting to hold back on this review because I swear every time I go, there's so many people ordering takeout or dining it! It very much is getting the attention it deserves. I will say, pricier than your other honduran joints but this one is worth it. You can taste the love and fresh ingredients they pour into this place. OMG!!!!! Someone grandma in the kitchen thowing down! That has to be one of the best Hondureno restaurant in the city!!!! The ouside is bright yellow with a spanish touch. The inside is very cute, clean and just a latino vibe. The servers are very friendly and patient. That is unless I learn that a friend of ours from the Pacific Northwest (Where we live) is visiting NOLA. So I attended a conference for bilingual speakers. The organization hosting this event had the lunch provided by this place. I am half Honduran but I have never liked any of the local Honduran restaurants. I always felt as though I needed to cook my own native foods, if I want it to be good. I have always been disappointed by the tastes & presentation of certain local Honduran Restaurants. This place provided delicious lunches for 2 days. The first day 4/14/25, I ate pechuga de pollo (chicken breast) sautéed with onion & bell pepper accompanied by yellow rice & refried beans, a flour tortilla. The chicken was juicy & the marinade used had the right amount of flavor. The flour tortilla was made from scratch & I enjoyed wrapping the chicken in it with a little bit of the other sides like you would when eating a fajita.... I enjoyed it, I ate the whole plate even though I practice portion control. The portion was filling. It was the only meal I ate that day. On today we had carne asada with onion, belll pepper, white rice , plátanos maduros, yuca frita, 2 corn tortillas. Once again everything was delicious! The meat was flavorful & it was tender. The sides complimented the meat. The portion was good, This plate I could not finish in one sitting. I will definitely patronize this restaurant on the days that I don't feel like cooking. My household will love it. I'm glad that I found this gem....I hope that my experience at the actual restaurant adds to this experience. PS, the rice is cooked in like broth which makes it tasty.... This is some of the best food I've had in a very long time. Wow. The passionfruit aqua fresca with rum was the perfect, refreshing summer drink. The baleadas (not pictured) were phenomenal, the dough is sooo pillowy. I ordered the pupusas revuelta and it paired well with the fresh pickled veggies and homemade hot sauce. First of all, the baleadas are extraordinary. I normally get the chuleta which is the one with pork chop and they're always warm. They're always full. The balayata is big enough to be a meal in and of itself, but it's so budget friendly and so fresh. The other thing I want to highlight is the horchata. The horchata has a little bit of peanut in it and that like dash of like salty peanut taste, plus the regular cinnamon rice flavor of the horchata just makes the whole thing so good and so delicious. It's a perfect blend of sweet, little bit of salt, and a cold, refreshing, smooth vanilla flavor which we need because we live in the subtropics. Nobody has time for bad horchata when there's hurricanes lol I also want to shine a light on the training they provide their workers. While I was waiting to pick up my food, I observed staff explaining to a new hire which sponges are appropriate for which surfaces in the kitchen area. That attention to detail highlights to me that not only do they cook good they make sure the food is safe. They really care about the quality of the work they do, and the quality of the food they serve. Super professional super delish. read more

I've ordered delivery from Tia Maria's before and liked it, so I finally decided to dine in. It's a cute, homey spot. You can see into the kitchen from the dining room. I love that. We walked in right as the server was walking an order to a table. The portion size and smell caught our attention. It was a huge bowl of sopa de mariscos. The coconut milk smell was so tempting, but I'm allergic to shellfish. We opted for corn ribs, chicharron pupusas, and ropa vieja. I loved that the corn ribs were topped with Valentina. It's one of my favorite hot sauces. Perfect smokiness! We enjoyed every bite of food. Great flavors, satisfying portion sizes, and reasonable prices. I also appreciate that there is a space for changing diapers in the restroom. Also, as a person with allergies, I appreciated the signage about peanut and other allergies. Everything I've tasted has been awesome, and my wife swears by the chicken soup - plus the portion is HUGE. Her only preference would be to not have the chicken be on the bone but then again she's not remotely Honduran. Ropa Vieja, sweet plantains, fried beef pies, and even the tortillas are house made and very good. Salsa has good flavor but virtually no heat, which works fine for me. I'm visiting New Orleans and trying to check out a variety of places while I'm here and came across Tia Maria's. Since I've never had Honduran food before, I figured I'd give it a try. I was easily able to find parking, we got seated right away, and our waiter was so attentive and helpful explaining anything on the menu. I got the papusa sandwich with plantains and my husband got the liver and onions. Hands down the best meal of the trip, and possibly the best meal I've had at a restaurant in a long time. We were so full, but still wanted to try the desserts, so we got some flan and tres leches to go. I will for sure be telling any friends who visit NOLA to check it out. read more

I usually love the Ropa Vieja from this restaurant, but I'm writing this review so that the restaurant managers are aware that they seem to have changed their recipe for the worse. Usually, the Ropa Vieja here is delicious and has that normal reddish color (that comes from the spices they normally add). But when I ordered it today (12/26/24), I could tell they did something different as soon as I saw the dish. It was just plain brown, as if they had skipped on certain spices. It also didn't taste as good as it normally does. Whatever they did to their recipe, they should change it back. read more

We ordered 2 sopa de pollos and a Ceibeño plate which consists of fried chicken, plantains, and repollo. The sauce on the repollo was excellent. My family members agreed that the sopa stole the show! Stopped by here 2 days ago for lunch and had the Chuletas (fried pork chops) and it was so amazing and flavorful that I came back for dinner tonight and brought the hubby. He has the De Pollo Fajitas with the (man's) flour tortilla's. Big, fat, soft, fluffy flour tortilla's!! The chicken was also very flavorful. Come here and experience some local "flavor" that isn't commercialized like the French Quarter. It felt a lot like the wonderful Venezuelan food we had in Bonaire on one of our dive trips. read more
