I've held off writing my review out of compassion for small business. I cannot let that affect the…read moreresult of others' projects. First of all, I should have looked elsewhere when the owner didn't return phone calls and then was late for our first appointment. With the invention of cell phones, there is no reason to leave anyone waiting unexpectedly. Now onto the quality of their work. The polished edges look as though they were training an apprentice. Two of the slab had to be sent back to grind the radius corners into an actual radius. One of the slabs was mis-cut and they thought I wouldn't notice. The front of the slabs are not in line with the front of the cabinets. Why do a template if you're not going to align the slabs. One slab on the side of the range is not level and is obvious. The slab between a wall and refrigerator panel was cust about a quarter of an inch narrow. That's fine if they would have split the difference. But, no. They shoved it on an angle to one side. It looks like a mess. The sink cut out looks as though the apprentice was either drunk or just plain didn't give a crap. When I asked the male owner what he thought about it, his response was, "Could we have done better? Yes. Is it acceptable? Yes." The installer got caulk all over my cabinets and when I asked the owner how I could get it off, it was suggested I use paint thinner or something like that. Yep. Use paint thinner. Morons. I ended up using mineral spirits. Why was it up to me, the customer, to have to do that? It was on me if I took the finish off my brand new custom cabinets. They should have sent someone to do that. And don't get me started on their ability to caulk the tile backsplash to the new counter top. Pathetic mess. And the silicone all over my new sink is a real treat. Perhaps I expect more for $4000. We didn't use level one granite. We used manufactured stone which is more expensive. Save yourself the grief and look elsewhere.

I learned that there are many imperfections from the house builders and cabinet frame makers, James River overcame all that and addressed every little detail, above and beyond just stonework... I had hired Absolute Stone Design in the fall of 2025 to repair an issue with my granite counter…read moretops having an uneven seam. They sent out two guys to repair my countertop. Only one of them spoke English. None the less, they were able to fix the issue. Fast forward to February 2026 and the issue with the uneven seam returned. Apparently, the fix didn't stay. Spoke with Renee at Absolute Stone Design and explained the issue. They sent two technicians to my house to repair the issue. This time neither one of them could speak or understand English which made it very difficult and problematic to explain what needed to be done and what my wishes were. Me and the technician ended up having to use a translator app on our phones to communicate which was quite time consuming and only prolonged the issue of getting my countertop fixed. After 20 minutes or so of back and forth trying to explain what the process was and what my expectations are the technicians began working. They put some sort of device that straddled the seam and using suction moved the two different sides of granite to make the seam even. The whole process took a little more than an hour. Once they were done, they seem to pack up their stuff in a hurry and left. Now my wife and I didn't stay in the kitchen the entire time and watch them work. Once they left, my wife and I went to dinner. Once we came back and closely inspected the work, that's when we found the damage to our countertops. They had put a hole in our stone and tried to cover it up by putting some kind of filler in the hole hoping we wouldn't notice it (see pics). I was able to scratch out the filler with my fingernail. I went to the Absolute Stone design office and spoke to the owner and explained the issue of what happened and showed him the pictures of the damage. His response at first was denial and then asked me how do I know that wasn't there before they started work. Then he tried to explain how the stone is old and brittle. He tried to explain away a couple of different excuses so as to avoid responsibility. After a little further explaining my position and how I don't buy his excuses I advised him that I am not paying the $300 fee he wants for the work as I am not paying them $300 to come to my house and damage my granite and then not offer to fix it. The owner was OK with that. He also advised me that he would speak with Renee about the issue and someone would be getting back with me the following week. That didn't happen and no one called me. Only after I received an invoice in my email (about a week later) did I call them back and speak with Renee and explained again what had happened. I could tell from our conversation that no discussion was had between her and the owner. I also advised her that I was not paying the $300 to them after they had damaged my granite. She understood and was OK with it. Now here we are a few weeks later and I get a call from a young girl at Absolute Stone Design inquiring about the $300. I again had to explain to this young girl what took place and for her to speak with the owner and Renee. I also explained that they sent two technicians to work at my house and neither one could speak or understand English. Her reply both shocked and surprised me as she said in an indignant manner that "I don't see what that has to do with anything..." and before I could explain, she hung up on me. Having been treated like this by Absolute Stone Design, I would not recommend doing business with these people as they are not very customer focused and apparently are OK with sending technicians to fix your problem without even being able to communicate with you should you have concerns or questions. And it appears that their staff are not properly trained on how to provide quality customer or show any empathy towards a customer who has experienced issues with their work nor do they seemed concerned in any way on offering to make it right. Buyer Beware!

I'd seen a sample of it at Home Depot, but my project didn't meet their minimum. Went to another shop in Powhatan; they were super nice but a bit pricey and their product was a fabricated copy. (I wanted Silestone for all the right reasons.). What really impressed me: 1) Melissa didn't charge me for the circle cut out I wanted in the top left corner - (for trash!); 2). Gonzago was so polite, knowledgeable, patiently measured and convinced me to get the matching backsplash. Glad I did. and lastly, 3) The install team was polite, efficient and filled in the glue where I thought more was needed. (Keep the lady happy!). I've referred Melissa and team once. Hope I can do it again. Thank you, ASD.

We had a $27k contract for JES to stabilize the foundation of our garage in Charlottesville and to…read moreaddress water that would seep into the basement during heavy rain events. The main work was done very well and professionally. The contract, however, also called for drilling a long hole into the end of a wall through multiple cinderblocks to drain the water intrusion that was getting specifically into the basement's stairwell wall. There was no other access point to the bottom cinderblocks of the stairway wall. It was a clever solution written into the contract, and the provision specifically stated that JES would bring a 36-48-inch masonry drill bit in order to drill a hole long enough to accomplish the goal. After the team completed the main work, we pointed out the need to finish the job by drilling this hole, but they did not have such a long bit with them. We then reached out many, many times over many months to get this hole drilled. Most often we were met with silence, but when we ultimately have gotten a response, the person would say, "Sorry, we will get that done." Twice, JES workers have actually shown up -- but without a long drill bit. They would then look at the situation and understand why the long drill bit was needed, say they would arrange for it to happen, and then radio silence. After we posted a longer version of the story as a review, apparently higher-up JES management people got involved and pretty quickly sent someone out with the right drill and bit to finish the contracted work. Presumably, some HR training has happened also and given that the job is now complete with the vast majority of it having been done well and in a timely manner -- I've now upwardly revised my rating.

The foundation repair work was very good, except several items were left undone. I've been trying for two months to get someone out to look at a soft spot in my den floor and the separation between the front porch and the front door that occurred after the foundation was lifted. Rick Myers and Destany Bing took my calls until several weeks ago and now they just ignore me. I would recommend consumers go with another company.
