Great place to go for some drinks and food. Wings and the garnaches are good. Good crowd and decent pricing

Tikal Restaurant & Lounge is the successor to the venerable Rossi's Bar at the corner of Morris and Franklin in the Chambersburg section of Trenton, NJ. At one time, Rossi's was considered to grill the best burgers in the city. When they moved out to Quakerbridge Road in Hamilton, there was a big void left behind. That emptiness has now been replaced with this well appointed casa Guatemalteca. I stopped by for lunch recently and was impressed with the quality of the finished space. The old square bar had been replaced with a wall unit with attractive wooden back bar. There was new furniture in the barroom as well as the rear dining room. New windows on the world were stenciled with the new name and its Mayan pyramid logo. Tikal is a famous historic site in northern Guatemala where the Mayan Civilization build a large city and temple complex before the arrival of Europeans, or even the Chinese before them. The menu is a bit of a fusion exercise, with a large national delicacies list, and a few Americano dishes like hamburgers and cheesesteaks with a definite Central American flair. They also blend up excellent shakes and fresh fruit bedidas, using your choice of water or milk base. I took a stool on a hightop in the barroom, and was served by bartender, Ana. She had the right temperament for the job, and was friendly and prompt with menu, order taking and food delivery. She was also patient as I worked my way through the menu looking for the right combination for lunch. She finally recommended the Tikal Wrap, with came with papas fritas. I also ordered a mango smoothie as a washdown. The drink arrived in a tall frosted glass. The mango mix with water was cool, semi-sweet, tasty and very refreshing. The wrap was a monster, full of grilled chicken, lettuce, black beans, avocado, tomato and an interesting piquant sauce. I ate as much as I could, knowing that I would be skipping dinner that night. It was excellent. The ample pile of fries was more than I could handle, but they tasted great with the spicy mayo that came in a bottle rocket on request. The app chips and homemade salsa were overkill, but I did dip a couple of the triangular chips, and thought the salsa nicely spiced. Tikal is one of the higher end Guatemalan houses in the Trenton area, and definitely worth a visit for lunch or dinner. Prices are very reasonable. I am particularly curious about their burgers, given the gloried history of the joint. As I am not a fan of the new Rossi's, it would be ironic and poetic justice if the new Latin take on this American classic was better than the "new" original. Sometimes the city is the secret sauce that make for magical dishes.

Tikal Restaurant and Lounge is yet another great addition to Trenton's new restaurant lineup. Recently opened and located in the Chambersburg neighborhood, Tikal is a clean and friendly restaurant that serves up some pretty mean Guatemalan food. The garnachas, a mini tostada topped with a ground beef mixture, lettuce, pico de gallo, and avocado, were spot on and beautifully seasoned. The seafood soup we ordered was fresh and filled with a variety of seafood including crab legs! And wanting to try their version of a Guatemalan-American fusion, I ordered the Tikal Hamburger and it did not disappoint. It was loaded with fresh toppings and came with a side of crispy French fries. Early afternoon the place really filled up and the waitress was doing a really great job keeping everyone happy. There was a small wait for the food but it was worth it. If they keep up with this volume they would definitely benefit having another waiter or waitress on board. On a side note, I was pleased to see a group of Trenton detectives/police officers pop in for lunch (kudos to them for supporting local businesses). In summary, this is a hot new spot to try and is sure to please, whether you are looking to have a nice dinner or lunch, or stop by for a few drinks! Highly recommend!!

Recently opened this week and decided to try it with my wife and kids. The menu looks really good, with a full variety of authentic guatemalan and american dishes. After taking a while to decide ( because everything sounds so good ) it was well worth it, the food was amazing, the presentation and taste is really good. The service was excellent from the time we came into the restaurant, being greeted at the door was really nice. The fact that the restaurant and the bar is separate makes it more family friendly, having a separate entrance for each is perfect. One of my favorite was the nachos with a bean sauce before they brought the food, it was perfect for those few minutes we were waiting! Overall, it is highly recommended if you're in the mood for good food!!

Food is good but service is below average. It takes an eternity to get your food. This place needs to be better managed.

Kitchen - 4 stars I was a bit apprehensive about eating great seafood at such a run down dive bar. A burger? Sure, but seafood? As many things in the area, you must keep an open mind. We over-ordered thanks to waiting entirely too long to get fodo and thus ordered all of the following: Seafood Mac'n Cheese: So yummy! Should be served in a pretty plate instead of plastic basket to really be enjoyed properly, but really great taste. Fried Scallops: SKIP THIS. I ordered the $9 order and they were so tiny they looked like fried pickles instead of scallops. Crab loaded fries: Also, totally unnecessary to get shredded crab and cheese on fries. It really didn't add much flavor either, so I would pass. Lobster Po'boy: GET THIS! GET TWO OF THESE! This sandwich was soooo amazing. It is served in a perfectly soft roll, crispy giant chunks of lobster, and a fabulous sauce lathered all on top. The thing was as big as my forearm, and only $13. Overall, some good eats, I will definitely be returning, but more for takeout. *************************************************************************************** Bar - 2 star We sat at the bar to grab a drink while we waited and it was an older lady tending to the bar. There was a drink special written on a board, I asked what that was and she plainly said, "I don't know how to make that." Fabulous, maybe taking it off the board would be a good idea, considering the next customer that walked in had the same question. The main difference between a dive bar and run down bar is maintance. Dives might have a few messed up tiles, or a crack in the wall. This bar has every single tile broken, disgusting stuff hanging from the ceiling, broken mirrors lining the walls, and rude service. I get that this is not a place that gets a ton of business, but a few things fixed would do wonders. The only reason I give it 2 stars instead of 1 is because the pour was great on my drink and they did have lots of vodka options.

I ordered what I believed to be a simple seafood baked potato. The food smelled rotten for starters... It was the sloppiest put together dish. Theres was just cream everywhere I couldn't tell what I was eating. I literally had 4 scoops and discarded the entire dish. I just feel like theres a serious lack of food safety/ handling going on definitely a lack of quality. Scrap the whole menu and start over with very few items. I didn't pick up my food but I was told that the atmosphere was unpleasant, I probably wouldn't want to order food here again.

All of the appetizers were great, and can be spilt with friends: -Quesadillas -Calamari -Nachos -Plantain w| Cheese The plantain with melted cheese was such a treat, glad we tried it. If you're looking for the perfect savory, sweet, and non-sweet balanced combination of flavor this is the one! The nachos were tasty, just your traditional melted cheese, ground beef, salsa, sour cream, and guac. The quesadilla's were soft and grilled well (not hard or over cooked). The calamari is not the original smaller squid like pieces with tentacles still attached, it's more so chopped into rings and served with a red sauce. Not sure if they have garlic aioli mayo or not, ask your server. The inside is a vibe, with one side being a full restaurant, and the other side being a smaller room with a full bar, tables, and DJ Booth set up. It's a great place to meet up for dinner with friends! There's music playing inside but not so loud that you can't have a conversation which is great. There is a free parking lot in the back of the building. The menu's are on ipad's which we loved! Enjoy!!

Unfortunately they only had one waitress working the 15 or so outdoor tables on a busy night when I went. On top of that, the kitchen was understaffed. Half of our food came out 1.5 hours after ordering, and the rest a half hour after that. I don't fault the waitress who was clearly overwhelmed and could not keep up with the barrage of people asking about their food and drink orders. When we asked for glasses of water, the waitress told us they don't have water available. First time I've been refused water at a restaurant. The DJ working couldn't decide whether he wanted to play music, the Ecuador-Colombia match, or nothing at all. There were constant crackling and popping sounds from the sound system every time he adjusted something. Food itself was just okay. My Colombian tamale was full of fatty pieces of beef and chicken. The guacamole on the "Catador delight" (tostone with guac and shrimp) was not fresh; the shrimp was overcooked. Corn tortillas were listed for half the items on the menu, but they said they only have flour tortillas available. There are better places for dinner and drinks around, and I don't think the food is worth ordering for takeout. Catador is the third restaurant/bar to occupy the space in recent years, and I don't see them lasting long with how poorly run it is.
