Stopped in for a slice of pie. I had a slice with several berries. Very tasty and I would recommend stopping in, eating there, or like I did - take a slice to go!

    Yum!

Sophie's Dog Bakery - "Doggie bag" to bring home to my pooches from the bakery!

I first spied Sophie's last year. I was enamored but not the desired clientele -- I was not a dog…read morenor a dog-owning human. On our annual visit to Hayward this year, I made it a point to go back when we visited downtown Hayward because I now do own a pup, a pug/Boston terrier (a bug!) named Millie. And while I suppose she should be the one to write this review considering she was the one who ate the treats that came from this shop -- how cute would her little paws typing on a computer be!!! -- from all accounts she was impressed. In lieu of stars, five paws for Sophie's Dog Bakery! On our most recent trip, I and Millie's cousin's mom -- my boyfriend's sister -- started by perusing the toys. Sophie's sells a wide array of dog balls, squeaky toys, leashes, collars, dog bowls, etc. Among Millie's nicknames are "Millbug" and "Piggie" -- oh, the snorts! -- so when I spied a toy that looked like a pig with butterfly ears, I think I snorted in glee a bit myself! My Millbug would have a pig-bug! We made our way around to the bakery case, the centerpiece of this shop. It boasts cookies that look delicious to humans too. I got Millie a cookie iced to look like a bee -- keeping with the bug theme -- and my bf's sis got a cookie for her pup too. I also made up a grab bag from the jars of small, baked, un-iced bones and treats that top a table in the middle of the store. Many of these were made with sweet potato, pumpkin and banana. They smelled delicious! I think I spent about $20 for everything. Now, Millie is a bit of a discerning gourmand. She's not the type to eat a treat first, think later. She'll sniff, maybe lick it a bit, leave it on the ground and then perhaps eat it later. But after first giving me an eye that said, "Are you sure you really want me to eat this cookie?" she excitedly chomped her way through the cookie. She now doesn't think twice before eating a treat that comes out of the Sophie's bag. And her pig-bug? It's one of her favorite toys. Millie was impressed, so I am impressed. Can't wait to go back next year!

Prices start about .50 for plainer cookies and $2 for fancier items reaching about $5 or $6. Friendly staff often have a cute dog behind the counter. First - the crust is the best one I've ever had. Very tasty with some crunchiness and not too sweet or bland - just perfect. The filling of rhubarb with raspberries was a perfect match very tasty while not too sweet. Last but not least, the pie was supper fresh still hot from the oven and you see the crew working on the next batch of pies. Too bad I'm only passing through town.

Please allow me to present a contrasting opinion…read more To be clear, I love pie. I'm a pie over cake kinda guy. In part, my love for pie has to do with pie crust. And I do realize that reasonable people can disagree on pie crust styles. In fact, my wife and I are two such people. I adore an all butter crust. I love the flavor of butter and how those milk solids get all toasty up there in with the flour to delivery amazing caramelization, crunchy edges, and a crisp bottom. The missus prefers a more tender crust, and that is what Gourmet Garage delivers. So she was happy, but I was left wanting. I also happen to have a super sensitive palate to the off flavors that can emerge from something spending a bit too long in the freezer. My wife, not so much. So she didn't notice those flavors in the crust that further diminished my joy in the pie. L'sigh. We got the pie hot out of the oven. Patiently waited for it to cool down enough so that it wouldn't melt the plastic fork provided by the bakery. The off flavors were there for me at the start, and they persisted as the pie continued to cool down. While we saw the bakery used frozen fruit, as one must to make some off season fruit pies, the freezer flavor was most present for me in the crust. That was the biggest let down of all. After a while I just couldn't bring myself to eat any more. The caramel pecan roll was better. No off flavors. But on that I would have liked to see the roll itself be more tender. Perhaps when fruit season is in full swing and GG is hopping, the crusts are fresher and the pies are better. Regrettably this was not my experience in mid June. Disappointment with the food aside, service was lovely. While the pies weren't quite out of the oven when we arrived first thing in the morning, I deeply appreciated being advised how many minutes out the pies were from being done, and the bravery of taking a blazing hot pie and putting it in an open box so we could have one for the road.
