We saw quite a few neat fish and the ride out was smooth. A couple of things I felt could be improved... the equipment provided to some of us was in bad shape. The tube I was given to use was exactly what you can purchase in the pool toys at Walmart and the mouth piece was chewed so badly there was almost nothing left to it. That was pretty disgusting. If I were to go again I'd bring my own. Being our first time we assumed they'd have professional equipment better than we could provide ourselves. While most of the staff were pretty friendly.. the young dark haired guide in charge of providing the instructions and setting the boundaries was just not pleasant at all. He was almost scolding when giving instructions and just very unfriendly to the patrons. Definitely felt like we were a bother to him. I would certainly never book a scuba lesson or tour if he were the instructor. Maybe he was still learning and it was nerves? To end this on a more positive note ... they take safety seriously and they also provide you eco friendly packets of fish food which was really neat!

The morning started out slow (no fish for a second day!? c'mon!) but we got into the reds about an hour before we were to head back in. Not only was Capt Dave determined to put us on fish but he kept us out an hour and a half after our paid time frame so we could limit out! We had SO MUCH FUN and I can't wait to get back out with him. I have tried to book since but I was poor at planning and wasn't able to book as he was already full. But he didn't over-explain it either. It was just the right combination of educator and personality. We maxed out on trout and got a skip jack as well. We then made the decision to go after some other red fish. We weren't able to catch any, but did reel in a bunch of catfish, which at least kept us busy. We all had a great time and the 13-yr old gave it a 9.5 out of 10!

Day one was a tough as the island had four straight days of significant wind and the Bay was dirty. We fought through it and brought in a decent haul of trout, including a couple of Gafftoptsail catfish. Day two was significantly calmer, and we maxed out on trout in the first hour. We then were able to haul in a few reds, flounder, a blacktip shark, and a big skipjack. Capt. Paco is the right mix of great fishermen/capt and personality. He's patient with amateurs and a good teacher. Capt. Paco brings his own bait. We've had previous guides that waste a significant amount of fishing time finding the shrimp boats to purchase Croaker (and made us pay for it). Capt. Paco filets the fish himself without charging $1 per filet. (I'd recommend a tip for this as some other Captains have outsourced this job).

I found a good one named Captain Tin Flores, who is an expert in the area and took me on a Arroyo River eco-cruise, even though it was kind of the off-season. I found Captain Tin listed on the South Padre Island Convention & Visitor's Bureau website and called to leave a message. He called me back & we arranged for the tour. The Captain acquired a sea-worthy boat and off we went from the Parrot-Eyes Water Sports dock area quite early on a weekday morning. The Captain knew exactly where he was going and was very familiar with all the birds, animals, fish and flora & fauna of the area. On the eco-cruise, I got lucky and managed to see coyote, turkey vultures, dolphins in the bay, plenty of seabirds including the pink roseate spoonbills and the exotic Nilgai. Though this tour was priced at more than I would normally pay, it was well worth it to see the fantastic wildlife. The Captain is flexible and will tailor a trip to meet your financial capabilities. Captain Tin also does dolphin-watching, sight-seeing, sunset, fireworks and booze cruises. The Captain offers bay and offshore fishing charters and para-sailing. He can take you into Mexico, if you like or around the area as part of a border tour.
