I wanted to like this place and used the reviews from Google. I should've usedthe reviews from Yelp because this place had very bland food. Taco Bell would've been better. There was one other table seated when we were there but service was slow and we had to walk to the counter to get our check. Tio Pepe has been a staple of my family for YEARS and usually celebrate Father's Day or my dad's birthday there because he loves Mexican food and this is a great because my parents rarely eat out. Brought a part of 5 to celebrate Father's Day tonight and was underwhelmed from the start but knew good food was coming so dealt with the waitress. My mom and I got to eat cold food while everyone else's was the right temp. I ordered nachos with no beans but also got very little cheese and chicken too. At this point I was ready to pay the bill and leave. My mom handed my a gift card I had given my dad last year for a holiday to put towards the $100 bill I was paying. The owner comes back saying that he is a new owner and the old owner didn't tell him that there were outstanding gift cards and he was willing to give me a $12.50 credit on the card versus the $25 because "he didn't know". They apparently have new machines and aren't able to run the cards but even if he did he was going to just give me a credit of $12.50. My mom kept the receipt that came with the card and it showed $25. The owner kept saying he couldn't give us the full $25 because he "didn't know" about the gift card and was a "new owner" to which I replied "I don't keep track of who owns the restaurant"... the customer shouldn't have to be held responsible for the change in ownership. My voice got a little louder than I intended in his full restaurant and at that point he gave me $25 off the bill. I'm glad I gave my dad a gift card to a new Mexican restaurant for Father's Day because no one in my family will patronize this restaurant in the future. read more

This is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in the lane county area. They were a few mins late opening up when we arrived but it was still amazing. I ordered their creme enchiladas which is always to die for. It was delicious. The beans were the perfect temp and edible almost Immediately. The rice was good and very Moist. The chicken in the enchiladas was perfectly cooked. I was to say the least very impressed. Way to go!! :) will give you 5 stars every day of the week. read more

Probably not really a four star place. But it's popular and cheery-bright (orange walls and lots of kitsch), and it reminds me of how Tex Mex places were when I was a kid. (In a good way). And most of all, it has the best chile relleno I've found in Eugene (so far - I'm still looking!). GF's soft tacos were "ok not memorable" and the salsa was fresh but bland. But the relleno had good fleshy chile and a nice egg batter, with flavorful queso blanco and a really delicious savory sauce to pull it all together. Not so easy to find, yum! read more

This was an utterly unimpressive dining experience. I ordered the Carne Asada plate. The chips were very stale as though they had just been sitting in the warmer all day. The Carne Asada was just about burnt. The rice appeared to be mixed with Veg-All canned vegetables. To top it off, the beans were in a separate little bowl with bacon, and chopped up hot dogs. No, I'm not kidding. They were not even good hot dogs. They were those cheap ones that are like .89 a package. The service was acceptable, although the waiter did not bring the box my wife requested. Two of us went here for lunch one day and I must say that while the service was exceptional and the food was above average I thought the portions were a a tad on the small side. This may be because their lunch menu is possibly smaller portions than the dinner but I failed to ask. The wife ordered the chicken mole enchiladas which were fantastic. It may have been the best mole sauce I have ever had. I made the mistake of ordering fajitas which I generally don't care for????? Have no idea why I did this because they have a crab, shrimp and fish chimichanga sounded delicious. They also offer some unusual dishes and combinations that look tantalizing. The two stars are for their service and the pickled carrots they serve with the chips. However, those two things don't make it a place worth coming back to. Mostly because they put nutmeg in their sauces. I don't know if it's a regional thing, but I've never had Mexican food with nutmeg, and it wasn't just a dash of the stuff. No, the burritos, and enchilada sauces are overpowered by the taste, and it just doesn't work for me, perhaps others don't mind it, but Mexican food tons of nutmeg...Not for me. read more

I was told this was the best Mexican restaurant in town, and after my first visit was hooked. All other Mexican restaurants are just so basic and offer the same things, which pretty much end up tasting pretty much the same. Tio pepe's gives you the option of soup rather than rice and beans, gives you an extra suprise with your salsa and chips (not sure what you call it but it's delicious) and they add in veggies with your rice and beans. They also serve my son a free shirly temple which he loves! I occasionaly try other Mexican restaurants but always come back to Tio's! I like this place, it has a friendly staff, decent mexican food and a good vibe and family friendly. My only thing is that I like a real margarita and not the kind with corn syrup the kind with lime juice. If they had a real margarita I could take them more seriously. This is my family's go-to Mexican restaurant in Eugene. We all enjoy the food and can always find something great to eat. The owner is a wonderful person, and most of his staff is as well. My son and I walk here often. Great enchiladas. Very affordable lunch and some pretty decent salsa.

The place was cute and the salsa was good. The waiter lied to me about having Tanquerey gin and brought me some sort of Gin and Tonic in a Martini glass. When the food came the Chimichangas tasted like they sat for hours before we arrived and the chicken (I ordered 1 beef and 1 chicken but got 2 chicken) was not edible. The cheese enchilada was very good, it had a great sauce which I think might have been their Mole sauce. I would not eat here again but if I did I would not order anything with meat. read more

I have read several reviews of this place but hadn't tried it yet. I'm not a big fan of Mexican food but friend is so we decided to try it. I will say the food was very good but the service was horrible. We were seated right away with menus but nothing else. There was only one other family in the place. After about ten minutes of waiting we flagged down someone and asked for water. A few minutes later a different person asked if we wanted tortilla chips and salsa. About ten minutes later our waitress came up and asked for our order. She did apologize for the delay but looked and sounded like we were inconveniencing her. Fifteen minutes later the same waitress asked if we had finished our food! What Food!!!?? We still hadn't gotten it! "Oh, I'll go get it" We had asked for a refill of our tortilla chips but that never happened. The food had apparently been sitting in the window but no delivered it. Had to go get our own box for leftovers while the busboy swept the floor near our table. Gross! No one brought us our check so had to go stand at the cash register while employees walked right past us. The food is the only saving grace about this place. I never comment on restaurant websites or offer any kind of "star" rating, but for my recent nightmare of an experience at Tio Pepe's, I had to make an exception. I ordered the Torta Cubana - which according to the menu description has pan-seared steak, chorizo, ham, avocado, pineapple, and chipotle sauce - and what I got was a soggy sandwich with tough-as-leather panko bread-crumbed steak, mayo, tomato sauce, and a hot dog. You read that right. A HOT DOG. I told our server I wanted to order something else. My second attempt was two shredded beef tacos. I'm not sure how you can screw up shredded beef tacos, but the cooks there somehow accomplished just that. The meat was tough and the marinade tasted like cotton candy. Not okay. The chips and salsa were decent, but nothing I would call "amazing." The beans and rice were also quite bland and uninspiring. Needless to say, I will most likely not return to this restaurant. Our server, bless his heart, was incredibly polite and soft-spoken about everything. I am honestly the LAST PERSON I know that would ever refuse to pay for food due to poor quality; but I refuse to pay for food that is simply inedible. My girlfriend ordered the Shrimp Enchiladas. If she gets food poisoning, that will simply be the nail in the coffin. read more

I had forgot to give the resturant a review 5 months ago, but I am giving this place a 5 star review because of the waiter I got. Why a 5 star waiter you ask? Well to start, he said it was his first day. Than he accidently dumped the complimentary salsa all over the table and in my lap. It cracked. Me. Up! He was shaking and said he was nervous And genuinely apologising... but I said no worries with laughter. This place has great flautas, complete with sour cream and guacamole to dip. I got takeout and it was still delicious. Chips and really tasty salsa come with the takeout, which is awesome. That's something I love about going out that you just don't usually get with takeout. Staff was really nice and food was ready very quickly. read more
