NOTE: 3.5 Stars I would like to give this place another try. I came here during lunch and it was a madhouse. Took me a bit of time to order, get my food and leave. The food was pretty good once I finally got to eating it. I got the oxtails with rice and beans. All very tasty and I was promptly half asleep at my desk after eating it. A sign of a good meal is sleepiness and lack of focus on work for the rest of the afternoon. Will have to give this place another try for dinner. The lunch rush was chaotic. I didn't feel like I was getting much of a deal as my food ended up being almost $13 dollars. Everything around the Metrotech area is overpriced as hell for no reason but I guess with so many patrons they can charge a premium. Staff was very friendly and tried to get things moving as quickly as they could despite the long line. If you do not want hot food they had a salad bar available. Honestly there are better places to get a salad in the area especially right down the street. Lunch time today was my first time ordering food from here. My co-worker recommended this restaurant to me. I had a taste for soup and salad. I ordered at the salad bar. They do have a wide variety of different salad toppings and different types of greens. I ordered Romaine with onions, 1 egg, bacon bits, carrots with balsamic vinaigrette dressing. The dressing tasted like nothing. It just made my salad moist / wet /taste like something was on there, but dressing had no flavor of any kind. Also ordered chicken noodle soup. It tastes like the same chicken noodle soup that the Chinese restaurants (take out) serve. Nothing special. Bland not much flavor. The good thing about the meal was that the portions were a nice size and I was full at work all day. Was not hungry at all. So that was good. The customer service was not friendly, but I suppose what can you expect with a take-out spot, right? Will I order take out from here again? No, there are plenty of options down town Brooklyn. This review is only for the cakes.... I went there a few weeks ago for a snack, before going to the movies across the street. The staff was friendly considering they were closing and let me run in really quick for a bite. The strawberry shortcake is divine, as is the oreo cookie cake. Most of their food is fine but they put a lot of salt. That is very typical kind of outside food and want to make you don't want to eat out again. Not healthy. I ordered their cheese "empanada", it sucks. The cheese is terrible and it is no near to the good Spanish empanada. Never again. read more

Not too bad, but definitely not the best ever. The Tio Pio spinach wrap came with grilled chicken, zucchini, carrots, avocados, and the avocado based Tio Pio hot sauce. I had a bone in my chicken that I had to remove, but otherwise the food was serviceable. A bit on the bland side for my taste, but the namesake sauce kicked things up a notch. All in all, this is a place to fill your belly with food to tide you over for a much more amazing meal ahead. I'll pass this by next time and just skip to the good stuff! read more

Received our order, but it was missing a few things!!! No ketchup, no mayo, no pickles and no salad dressing!! Sandwich was suppose to have fried onions but came with way too many raw onions and not enough lettuce and no tomatoes!!! Lettuce in salad looked wet and soggy!!! Absolutely true anecdote: I used to live near here, so I went to this place the day it opened. I ordered a grilled cheese because I love grilled cheese. The guy looked at me, and then at his coworker, and then back at me, and indicated that he didn't understand. "A grilled cheese", I said. "You know, a grilled cheese sandwich?" He had a two-minute long conversation in Spanish with the coworker, who seemed to be explaining to him what a grilled cheese was. He then proceeded to remove a single slice of American cheese from a package, place it directly on the grill, and stared at it as it bubbled and became stuck to the grill. He then scooped it up with a spatula, wiped it on a piece of bread, and presented it to me proudly. Hilarious. And terrible. I do not recommend this place. read more

Not bad but I wouldn't go out of my way to get some Tio Pio. I ordered the #1 priced at $7.75 which came with 1/4 chicken, white rice, beans and a side of plantains. It is definitely a lot of starch. The chicken was juicy and moist and I surprisingly loved the plantains (absolutely hate them everywhere else I've tried them so it's significant). I wish the green sauce that a few other yelpers mentioned had more heat and less of a creamy texture. The beans were a little bland and the rice was clumpy but not enough to make me dislike either one. All in all A-OK. read more

The food here has always been a hit or miss , but recently I went in and ordered cheesecake from them. As I'm eating the cheesecake it was tasting a little old and when I flipped the piece upside down I found mold on the bottom. I'll never be eating here again. Please be aware of what you eat. It has been so hard for me to find a location near the metro tech center area with affordable options and great service...then I found Tio Pio. I've experienced it at different times - during peak lunch time hours and after 5pm. When I went after 5pm, the food tasted kinda dry but when I went at like 2 pm, the food was just right. I never regret spending money on my meal ($9!) Depending on the server, they may or may not try to be slick and give you small portions. If I leave and my container of food feels light, something is wrong. On a good day, my favorite employees are working at the hot food station and they always hook me up. The chicken tastes like it was taken right off the grill...so good! I love to have options and Tio Pio has plenty of them. The cake display looks really good too. No matter how long the line is, they move pretty fast so don't let that scare you away from walking in. I give this restaurant a solid 4 stars! read more

I work in downtown BK and not familiar with this area and what foods are near by. But with the help of seamless web I found this place and I am beyond pleased with food. I ordered the pernil (roast pork) white rice and an avacado salad which was absolutely delicious!!! For the price the quality was beyond my expectations. The pio tio sauce was so good! Literally just finished my gluten free bagel with butter from here. Have to say, it was not your average gluten free bagel. I've noticed stores that do not specialise in gluten free food will use pre-made bagels (i.e. fresh & co) but no way were these pre-bought from another business. This bagel was SO thick and flavoursome I honestly got worried that it was a wheat bagel. Plus, they only charge 50 CENTS extra for a gluten free bagel!!! If I had any concerns, it would be that they were pretty stingy with the butter. Having said that, a gluten free THICK bagel for under $4 is a rarity in NYC and I'll definitely be going to this place again. read more

I used to work in downtown Brooklyn, and it was a TREAT to know that 5 days a week, up to two times a day, I could go to TP and enjoy a meal. from the time you touch the block, the aroma of home-cooked food smacks you in the face. breakfast sandwiches are ALWAYS fresh, and they seem to move pretty quickly, one person taking orders, one on the grill, two cashiers, handling coffee/tea. and you can watch them preparing lunch for the afternoon! Everything, fried chicken, rotisserie chicken, pernil (which is the BEST IVE EVER HAD) chicken cutlet, grilled shrimp/salmon, and about 10 different sides to choose from. With the exception of pricey seafood platters (around 12 bucks) all the food here is reasonably priced, and fresh. Easily the best food you'll get downtown brooklyn, if you're looking for that fresh, latin cuisine. read more

I got the rotisserie chicken from here last night and was not impressed with it at all. Rather than sitting inside the rotisserie oven, the chicken was already cut up and on a steamer table. Latin style rotisserie chickens are usually very flavorful and moist, but this one was super dry and bland. I think my supermarket sells better tasting chickens than this place and for much cheaper. Work in the area and come here for the Cuban Sandwich. It is the best I've ever had. Loaded with tender pork with crispy flavorful skin and some pieces of juicy fat. I always get it to go and the bread is never soggy when I open it up. Not cheap for $8.50 but you def get your moneys worth.
