I've had Sophie's in Manhattan before and found this location to be as good and perhaps a bit better. They do get crowded as the food as good so my tip is use the app if you're picking up. Had the steak sandwich which was good but not special. For special try the "shredded beef stew" which is traditionally called ropa vieja and it is delicious here. Shredded beef with rice, sweet plantains and a side salad were a lot to be sure but yum. They do have some seating though lunch may be tough. Worth trying for sure. read more

I have to share my go-to empanada spot in the city - It is a chain with many locations around, making it super convenient. The lines move fast, which is perfect when you're craving a quick snack. Very friendly staff! Even though is a chain, not all Sophies make their empanadas the same sadly! But these are very good! If you're into empanadas give this place a shot. read more

I was pleasantly surprised that the oxtail was good, I've always been Leary to have oxtail anywhere other than a Jamaican restaurant. The price was also very reasonable for NYC as it was the special for the day. That is the only reason why I tried it was for the price. One thing is I wish they cut off more of the fat. I typically go to locations in Manhattan, but the morning of the snowstorm the family had a hankering for something tasty. Something that would put meat on your bones. Time to visit the Downtown Brooklyn Sophie's. They recently shifted locations down the block (I think earlier this year they were closer to Willoughby! Now they're just south of Brooklyn Tab on Smith). I've always been loyal to Sophie's for the oxtail and the empanadas. I also ordered the beef stew (ropa viejo) and a Cubano sandwich. The maduros are always excellent, I also like the string bean and beet salad. The side veggie medley always surprises me that they're cooked al dente and not a soggy mess. My one complaint is that Sophie's food is saltier than I typically would make my food, but for an indulgence, its okay. Portions are always good, I often have enough for a meal and a half. Prices are more than fair when you consider the quantity. Staff are responsive - they called me when one of my side dishes were out within a few minutes of the order going in. For COVID, the indoor dining is all packed up, and there is no outdoor seating. All order are to go. They have hand sanitizer and plexiglass to keep customers and staff safe. Everyone had gloves and masks. There are dots on the floor to remind you to social distance. On a Wednesday at noon, it was surprisingly empty here, it looks like they're surviving on the takeout business - call directly and shop local y'all. read more

They were really good before but are now even better. They offer a HUGE portion of steamed vegetables with their spicy chicken, as well as delicious sides of chick peas, beans with avocado and rice. But on Sundays for some reason the service deteriorates substantially. Today in particular the girl left my tiny container of rice and beans half empty and then carelessly threw my container of garlic shrimp upside down in the bag causing it to spill everywhere. I ordered food at sophie's the people taking the orders were nice but the food was horrible. The salad wasn't fresh, the food layout in the container was a mess and the whole chicken leg was placed on top the salad. The chicken wasn't cleaned or cooked properly. You could see some of the hair from the chicken still at the top of the leg and wasn't cleaned well. Straight up, the food here is pretty good. Had the yellow rice with some beans, roast pork and steamed vegetables. All delicious. Even tried a beef empanada as an appetizer. I saw that they had raisins with the beef. And although I prefer without raisins, it was still delicious no matter what. And the green sauce is top notch, I put it on everything. Staff was really cool and friendly and put a lot of effort into the food they serve here. A little on the pricey side but it's worth it. Downside, you'll wish you had your couch nearby lol. When I saw that a Sophie's was coming to BK I was the happiest chocolate chip! I love this place. It's fast food but it's actually really good. My staple is the Milanesa de pollo.. breaded chicken sandwich. So yummy... But then you gotta put the green sauce on and it's a party in your mouth!!! Add some platanos and you got a full meal.
