I have been going to Tip Top shoes for many years. The selection is fantastic. The staff is so knowledgeable and friendly. When I go into the store, I am greeted as if a friend is greeting me. The " local" Shoe store like the ones I grew up with are very hard to find. Tip top is one of the GEMS. The owner is just so very friendly and knows shoes, sizing my foot and my families better than anyone. Certain brand I cannot wear because of my wide foot and they know. Very competitive pricing. Good on sales, not so good on service. Which is not what you want from an independent shoe store. The sales part was a breeze. I had some Timberland walking shoes that were falling apart, and the salesperson recommended snazzy Eccos, promising I could beat the heck out of them, and they'd last. Plus, they had Gore-Tex technology for comfort and humidity wicking. They were not cheap -- north of $250, if I recall correctly to the late summer of 2020, but I bought them. Everything went smoothly, and I wore them out of the store, happy as an urban walker could be. All good for a time, but 15 months into moderate but not impossibly active use, I noted the interior of both shoes was wearing out behind the top of my heel. Right through the fabric. I have literally never seen that happen before, so on a recent trip to NYC, I brought them in to see what they could do. I've never seen three salespeople -- older guy, younger guy, younger woman -- deny ability to assist, or even offer sympathy, in my life. One even said that it was the way I was taking off my shoes. Lookit. I'm 65 years old. I've been wearing shoes a very long time. I've owned 250 pair in my lifetime, if not more. I have never seen this kind of wear pattern, ever, on the interior fabric behind the heel. And no, I have not developed Trumpian bone spurs. There's a problem in the shoe, and the best I got was a diffident, "You can always write to the company." How about, "That shouldn't happen." I'm going to have to take these shoes to a repair shop now and see if they can be patched. The salespeople didn't even take a photo to send to Ecco. Sad service. Do better, guys. read more

My 87 year old mother, Genii Charnin, former Broadway dancer-WEST SIDE STORY (who had been ill most of the year) came alive suddenly when Howard fit her with new shoes. Terrible dancers feet plagued her and she refused to part with an old pair which not only made her trip and fall, but were damaged beyond repair. She also suffers from dementia which messes with your balance. So new shoes were crucial to her survival, to get around and also stay vertical. Howard brought out several pairs of shoes for her to try. He tended to her obstacles-wider foot, pain on the side. And after the 5th pair she said YES! To two pairs! Howard revealed he Latin dances-so he got her up and we got THIS! We haven't seen this since 2000. I made a trip from Brooklyn to check out this store. They have a large selection of all sorts of shoes I have planter fasciitis and needed to find a comfortable summer sandal that would support the arch of the foot. I ended up buying ECCO Womens Yucatan Sandal. A lady shopping there recommended them. When I tried them on I knew they were what I needed. The man who helped me was Chris. He was great and made the shoe trying on process fun and easy. All of the employees that I interacted with on my trip were all very pleasant and hospitable. The hard-selling salesman convinced me that the kitten heels just needed a slight adjustment by a shoe repair to make them less loose and that the wedges were what to wear for flat feet. So I came home happily with 3 new pairs of footwear. But my neighborhood shoemaker could not figure out how to tweak the first pair I gave him--and now they are too tight, hurt and unwearable. And the second pair, unworn, I can't even give it away. The wedges have no arch-- so I use them around the house until my feet hurt. I went across the street first to Jack rabbit and after seven minutes and no one asking if I needed help, I walked out pretty upset. Following several foot/ankle injuries, all of my old shoes gave me pain. Living in NYC, I walk everywhere, and not having good shoes was a problem. I had tried ordering orthotic-friendly shoes online, but none of them quite worked, and I kept sending them back. On a whim, I visited Tip Top Shoes. First, I couldn't believe that they carried ALL of the orthotic-friendly brands that I'd seen online. It was clear that they chose their stock very carefully and for a customer base that does a lot of walking. But the best part of my visit was working with Mercedes. She was AMAZING. By feeling the shape of my foot, she knew exactly which shoes were going to work--I mean beyond just size, she knew which shapes of shoes were going to be most compatible with the shape of my foot. It is so rare to find that kind of customer service in a store anymore, and I've never experienced it in a shoe store. Over several visits, I ended up buying three pairs (one that I picked out, and two that Mercedes pulled for me). Shoes have been so hard to shop for the last few years, it's amazing to find one pair that I semi-like, let alone three that I absolutely love and wear all the time. Later, I brought my mom, who has even trickier feet than I do. Mercedes felt her feet and selected a bunch of shoes that my mom loved. She ended up buying four pairs. (This is a big deal--my mom does not normally buy four pairs of shoes.) As the icing on the cake, on one of my visits, Tip Top Shoes had a contest to win a free pair of shoes. The store has good shoes for a fair price. My experience here was great because of a shoe salesperson named Melvin and his extensive knowledge of the foot and what shoes are most appropriate. I came because he was recommended to me by my top notch personal trainer, Lisa Grossman (https://www.ipersonaltrainer.net/trainer/lisagrossman). Melvin is an expert at orthotics with extensive specialized training and knowledge of the anatomy of the foot like no other shoe salesperson I have met. Shout out to Harold at Tip Top!! Not only did he help me find a pair of shoes (or maybe 2 pairs) that work with my feet, but also he pointed out that my orthotics had not been properly trimmed making them wider than they need to be. He showed me how it was oversized by @ a 1/4 inch around the top and the toe box. He was right. With his guidance I went to a shoe cobbler across the street and had the orthotics trimmed down making them more accommodating without damaging the integrity of the orthotic. I then went back to Tip Top, bought the shoes and the orthotics fit better in my Brooks sneakers that I was already wearing! Very disappointing visit. I needed black comfortable loafers in a women's size 11. I was shown a few loafers (no more than 7) that would be available in 11, all for close to or over $200. When I asked about anything for around $100, the sales person told me in no uncertain terms that this was an impossible request. Her attitude was rude and condescending. If local stores think they can compete with Zappo's and Amazon this way - good luck. read more

Melvin is amazing and he is a certified pedorthist! I didn't know what a certified pedorthist was but I can swear by it now. He took the proper measurements of my feet, my arches, and analyzed my gait. I walked into the store with severe foot (plantar faciitis) and back pain which I had for several months. He knew exactly what my issue was and sold me a pair of inserts that removed my pain within the same day. It felt like a miracle because I had already sought out a podiatrist, physical therapist, and other health professionals who basically told me to stay off my feet (which didn't help). Melvin also helped me find a stylish house slippers with the perfect arch support, and a great sneaker (that doesn't need the insert). Thanks to Melvin, I am working out again pain-free. He also helped my mother and daughter. Now, they are pain-free and looking stylish in their new shoes and boots too. I wish Tip Top Shoes would have a policy that their salespeople must be vaccinated against COVID. They do not have that policy and that was confirmed to me by the manager in the store when I voiced concern that the person selling to me was not vaccinated. That information was communicated to me when I asked the salesperson. It has been repeatedly stated by health officials that the pandemic continues primarily because unvaccinated people who are infected but do not know it since they have no symptoms are transmitting the virus. Shoe salespeople are less than 6 feet from customers. They need to be vaccinated. Wearing masks is not enough. Responsible businesses need to have responsible health policies. read more

Outstanding. Tip Top has been here forever for good reason. I have a bad ankle and needed some comfortable but not hideously ugly shoes. I would amputate before wearing Birkenstocks, Teeva, or Mephisto even in the privacy of my own home. Kant asked in the Critique of Judgment whether or not someone alone on an island would "adorn" himself and concluded the answer was no. We adorn ourselves for others, he reasoned, because aesthetic judgment is essentially social ("intersubjective") in nature. Well I'm all for avoiding pain when negotiating walk-ups, hot pavement, subway stairs and so on, but if the sight of my own shoes gives me hives, I'd rather be in pain--or just wear tennis shoes in a kind of homage to 1980s working women. A friend of mine with permanently ruined feet (she will never wear heels again) swears by Fit Flops and hers are as cute as Fit Flops can be. But they're still Fit Flops. She has no choice since an evil delivery guy on a bike mauled her in Yorkville. She hates Yorkville almost as much I hate Newport Beach (completely cuckoo as Yorkville is still the UES and when the 2nd Ave subway is finished, it will feel less like Siberia). But seven years later, she still hates Yorkville (which isn't rational) and bicyclists (which is) in no small part because she's a stylish woman condemned for the rest of her life to wearing gimp shoes. It's a bummer to be a New England/Manhattan lady of means now in CA who can't wear nice shoes. So I tried a pair. The sole is beyond comfortable; it's really like walking on cushions. But the way that strap cuts me between the big and second toe rules out all Fit Flops. Too bad as they were on sale for 70 bucks. Then there is Thierry Rabotin: 400-500. Not an option for me, alas. But so beautiful and if I ever do make real money, I will have a few pair for the city. New York destroys my shins, calves and feet. I am in perpetual pain from the knee down unless I wear tennis shoes only and in the summer that's too hot. But the 20% off shoes already discounted helped and I bought a pair of Brunate originally 300 for 160. That's more than I ever spend on shoes but this is about avoiding pain and longterm destruction to my ankle and I think they're reasonably attractive, though not Rabotin. I have twice in my life paid over 125 for shoes (I buy designer resale shoes and boots more often than new ones): 1) 2011 summer Thierry Rabotin for 190 (down from 345) and 2) Yesterday: Brunate for 160 down from 290. The ballerina flat with a nice padding was only 100 but they were out of my size in the color I wanted. The staff is very friendly--mostly men you know have been in this business for decades--and I would come here without hesitation if I ever happened upon money for the shoes I really want--and need--for city walking. read more

They have a very wide selection and always a bunch of staff working, but for some reason it feels as though they are always understaffed when I stop in as each employee is constantly already helping more than one customer. If you are good on shopping on your own and knowing what you want, then this place is all good until you actually need your size pulled from the back. This is a lovely establishment on the UWS, really close to the 72nd St 1 train station, and they carry an array of comfort-oriented brands in a large range of sizes. BUT DO NOT SHOP WITH THEM ONLINE. I placed an order of 3 shoes online in late August because of the lockdown, one got canceled, and out of the two I did receive, one was a wrong product. I got the Birkenstock Mayari in mocha (brown) but got sent black. Everyone makes mistakes so I contacted customer service before leaving a public review. And here comes the worst part. customerservice@tiptop never sent the free return shipping label they promised to after several follow-up emails. I've also called both the 800 number on the website and the 212 number listed on Google and Instagram multiple times as well, and was never able to reach the "online department." I was either held on the line for 5 minutes in silence and told they'd call back (never did) or transferred to someone who said they/the responsible party weren't at the office and I'd have to call back again. This kind of no response is unacceptable and social media is my last resort because I see the owner seems to take several reviews below seriously. If I still can't get this resolved (order number 20058) I will either send the shoes back on me or personally bring them back in-store and never shop with Tip Top again. read more
