After dealing with plantar fasciitis and other common running injuries I decided to take my mother-in-law's advice and see Melvin. You would think she was working off of commission when you heard her speak of Melvin! Melvin is truly a godsend. He is one of the most knowledgeable people I know when it comes to the foot. After taking a look at my foot and then analyzing my gait he was able to give me a breakdown of the three parts of my foot- something my podiatrist never provided me with! He explained to me that I have high arches and a narrow ankle bone. He then showed me the proper way to put on my running sneakers so that I would receive the optimal benefit from all of the fancy materials that they put in sneakers. He even went over what shoes would not be good for me, particularly Birkenstocks!! After following his advice I noticed that my foot ailments have disappeared. Any anytime I had the urge to wear my Birkenstocks I'd notice that my foot pain would ease its way back. If your experiencing any type of foot pain you should really seek out Melvin's advice before you spend a ton of money on podiatrist fees and orthotics! read more

This review is for the Tip Top KIDS department, which is next door to Tip Top main store. Ideally I would give it 4 stars but that means I am comparing it to other stores...but being that the only other children's store I have to compare is Harry's, I'm going to give it 5 stars because they do a great job, know their customers, and buying shoes for growing feet (for most part) can't be done online. I did. And I've regretted it, not all, but many times. I don't know all the staff's names but I do recall Philip fitting my daughter's first real shoes when she started to run around at 12 months. I do a lot of research (it helps that I don't have a normal feet/gait/pronation etc.) but I figured I could get away with buying the highest rated shoes on Zappos and Amazon. Don't get me wrong, about 80-90% of the time, reviews from moms with similar foot anatomy to my kids are on point and when I order, they fit perfectly. But just like adults, you can really screw up if you put toddlers in improperly fitted shoes. If you buy too big thinking they'll grow quickly into it (based on the average growth rate) and because you don't want to spend another $69 in 3 months' time as I am still reluctant to, you'll have a kid wearing huge shoes, tripping and falling out...like the girl we saw crossing 66th street and she tripped over the shoes that fell off and nearly got run over by a car after letting go of her nanny's had to go fetch her shoes. For some time after my first experience at Tip Top, for convenient reasons we started going to Harry's. But after less than stellar experience, returned to tip top when buying online was frustrating trying to fit both my daughters. We saw Terra who is well informed, extremely personable and friendly. And each time we returned, she knew my daughters by name and just that makes my kids feel comfortable and open to trying new shoes. We also saw Philip who instantly knew that I was very limited in choices for the issues that my daughter had (her frustration with the velcro, her high instep, and sensitive feet.) And she needed new shoes that very moment so I didn't have time to browse online. And there was only one shoe that he recommended but I asked him to bring another one. My daughter tried the one he picked, and told me she will never get frustrated ever again. Seriously parents, this is the reason why we still need to support local businesses because there are still some things, many things, that require person to person interaction and expertise. And the reason why I would give it four stars is also due to their limited selection for wide range of foot issues, seasons, sizes/colors etc., and the size of the store, but let's get real, I have to give it 5 stars because they run a tight store in a tight space in Manhattan and with their customer base being demanding Manhattan parents, they do a stellar job. read more

Tip Top is great especially if you're looking for fashionable shoes for feet with challenges. That's my story. I've been going to Tip Top for 20+ years and 90% of the time I find shoes for my active life -- whether for my daily walks or going to a fancy affair. They have an excellent selection and excellent staff, like Harold. Finally and very important -- Tip Top's policy is that you can get a full refund for up to 10 days. After unpleasant experiences at other local shoe stores, it is great to come into Tip Top where I have enjoyed excellent service. Harold was my salesperson the last two times I was in the store and he paid attention to my challenges finding a comfortable fit, made suggestions for styles/brands that would work best and without engaging in any hard pressure sales pitch. Both times, he told me to wear the shoes around my house before wearing them outside to make sure they are comfortable so I could return them if they are not. I have lived and worked in this neighborhood for over 20 years. I have supported tiptop shoes for 20 years as well. I just bought sneakers for my husband and a pair of Birkenstocks for myself a month ago, But never again. Today I went in to speak to the owner, Lester, who owns Tiptop shoes, Tiptop kids, and West sneakers. I went to ask him if he would like to give back to his community that has supported him for all of these years (not in those words) by partnering with a local private school serving children with special needs, I was met with rudeness by him and dismissed before I could even finish a sentence. He never even let me finish explaining why I was there and what I was asking of him. He's greedy, his sales people are Savage, and the only reason I went there and OVERPAID for shoes all of these years was because I live two blocks away. We have been going to Tip Top Shoes for Kids on West 72nd street for over decade. We bought my son's first pair of shoes here and have been coming back ever since for my son and my daughter. The staff here is incredibly helpful, knowledgeable and personable. While I do a lot of my other shopping for my kids online, I always buy my kids' shoes with them in the store as they always help me find the right shoes for my kids in the right size (as each brand of shoes and style of shoes fits a bit differently) that last them throughout the whole season. My daughter also tends to pronate and finding the right shoes that she both likes and are practical is not always easy, but the staff here always guides us to the right choices. While the whole staff here is wonderful, our go-to people are always Zee and Henry. After a few experiences over the years of trying to buy some shoes online that I ultimately had to return as they didn't fit my kids properly, we now only come here even though we no longer live in the neighorhood. read more

I ordered a pair of Birkenstock clogs from their website, but what arrived was not what was pictured. I ended up with a "professional'' chef's Birkenstock as opposed to the regular style Birks I thought I was ordering based on Tip Top's stock photos. I took pictures of what I received and sent them along with an email to Tip Top and no one responded. Not thrilled. Now I have to pay to return an item I never should have received in the first place. Be wary of purchasing online from this shop. The pictures are not always accurate, and you may receive something completely different and then have to pay for the privilege of returning them. read more

I had a wonderful boot buying experience with Harold the other day. After leaving another shoe store where I tried on about ten pairs of boots, with little help from the salesman, I went to Tip-Top. I told Harold what I was looking for and several problems I had with my feet. He measured my feet and I was amazed that the first boot I tried on, felt wonderful. We talked about sizing, etc. and I ended up buying these incredibly comfortable snow boots that I know I will enjoy wearing when I take my little granddaughters sledding and stomping around in the cold and snow. Tip top shoes kids is the TOPS. Brought my daughter here and now my grandchildren. They absolutely know how to fit shoes just right for the individual child, not just off the rack size. One has slightly narrow feet and they steer us to the shoes for selection. I also have found that any salesperson is great. Think I have used all of them. I went in to buy a pair of Birkenstocks because I saw they had a great selection in the window. I was warmly greeted by Melvin who immediately swooped in, measured my feet, and then grabbed the pair I was scoping out. He then proceeded to educate me about how to break in my Birks as well as advised me to buy rubber heel taps at a shoe repair store afterwards to "protect my investment." (Which I immediately went and purchased at a shoe repair store nearby for $4!) This is all news to me, because nobody told me anything like this when I went to Journeys last year to buy my first pair of Birks. Melvin is the man! I make a point to shop here when I'm in town and this week's experience was top notch. I'm not sure how this place attracts such attentive, knowledgeable and intuitive staff but they do. I was first served by a nice guy who sold me on these amazing, life-changing orthotics from Birkenstock that were much better than what my doctor recommended for over-the-counter orthotics. I was then served by Jackie who listened to what I was looking for and brought me amazing boots and shoes that were not what I asked for but were better than what I asked for and I ended up buying. This is so much better service and knowledge than what you can get online. And the prices seem competitive. But really, I'm more interested in buying from local store and get this amazing personalized service. Worth the trip! read more

He listened as I described my feet (high arch, narrow heel, etc.) and knew immediately what shoes to recommend based on the type of shoe I was looking for. He analyzed the fit of each and brought out additional shoes for me to try on. I never felt pressured to purchase any of the shoes I had tried on. I have a love-hate relationship with shoe shopping, especially when I have an agenda about what kind of shoes to buy. I love the endless possibilities of shoe styles! I hate having to rely on a typically clueless salesperson to fetch me sizes. I love how shoe shopping is viable even on Fat Days. I hate how my feet are too fat, I mean wide, for many shoes - esp sneakers. I love the act of purchasing *the* pair of shoes and then thinking about the next time I am going to wear them. I hate how shoes cost so freakin' much. Tip Top Shoes seemed like the answer to all my shoe shopping prayers and nightmares...I was in search of some sneakers to end my lame avoidance of the gym. Tip Top had plenty of selection of New Balance, my brand of choice because they are the only brand with wide-width sneakers for women....even more selection of cross-trainers than the New Balance store in Union Square/SF! The salespeople at Tip Top exemplify what a pleasant shoe shopping experience should be like...friendly, knowledgeable, not pushy. She talked to me about the best kinds of shoes for what activities and even let me know that Saucony carries wide-width as well. I can't forget to mention that Tip Top carries a great variety of shoes - sandals, sneakers, street shoes, more formal shoes, boots, Crocs *blech* - and a sales rack with great deals. I don't even bother with most shoe stores because it is so bitterly disappointing to enter, ask if they have any in my size, and be given that "you've gotta be kidding" look. Or, even worse, they bring out the one (ONE) pair in my size that happen to be the UGLIEST SHOES IN THE WORLD. And they act like I should be grateful because they carry MY SIZE SHOE! Luckily for me, there is Tip Top Shoes. (Should be called "Heaven.") This is my favorite shoe store in the world! Why? Because I happen to have the hardest-to-fit feet in the world, and they have always had something for me. In fact, last time I went, they had six (count 'em, six) pairs of shoes that I had to buy, just because they fit so well, were cute, and I can't ever find shoes anywhere else. The salespeople are all on commission and are somewhat aggressive, so when you go in, don't commit to anyone until you find someone you like (Repeat after me: "No, I'm just browsing..."). Otherwise you may get stuck with someone you're not crazy about, and if you're like me, you will end up spending a lot of time (and money) here, so you want to do it with someone you like. Steve is my man. He is tall, very helpful, has great ideas, and has never failed to satisfy. (Due to the draconian manager's rules, you can't request a specific salesperson -- just wander around until you find Steve.) If you are from out-of-New York state, and are getting several pairs of shoes, consider having them shipped back to your home -- you'll save a boatload on sales taxes and the shipping cost is negligible. Plus, you won't have to try to squeeze them into your already over-full luggage. (Secret tip: If you want to wear the new shoes while in NYC, just put your old ones in the box and they'll ship them home for you, and you'll still not have to be hit with the taxes.) I could wax on for days about the wonders of Tip Top -- they are experts at the perfect fit, are creative in finding the just-right shoe, and have an amazing selection, especially of hard-to-fit sizes. This store really knows its stock, inside and out, and even if they don't have the exact shoe you pulled from the shelves, they'll do their best to get you something that works, and that you'll love. My wife, raised in Brooklyn, told me this place was like an old fashioned shoe store where they really take care of you. I thought "yeah, right, all the way to the bank." But as my right foot was killing me, I said what the heck, I'd stop in to get some advice before going to a podiatrist. I walked in, explained my problem to a gentleman who looked like the owner. He said "you need to talk to Melvin." Did I ever. Melvin is a former pro basketball player who went on to get certified as in some technician discipline supporting podiatry. He instantly brought his full attention to me, did the equivalent of a podiatrist evaluation,and showed me how my right foot was pronating (tilting inward) and that plus a falling arch was causing the pain. He then taught me about orthotics, shoe design, the importance of having a proper fitting (from a pro like him) and even re-taught me how to put on and tie my shoes: before lacing you're supposed to tap the heel of the shoe so your heel plants firmly at the back of the shoe. This gives better support and when you lace your feet aren't wiggling anywhere. Melvin spent over an hour with me and he showed me some brands and styles of waterproof winter boots that would give me the support my feet needed so they would stop pronating. and without orthotics and heel supports. He knew how one brand ran shorter than the others so he got the perfect sizes for me. He had me try them with and without orthotics and by the time we were done I had a pair of boots that made me go "ahhh." Well worth the time and money, which wasn't outrageous. I rushed in needing restaurant work shoes because I had forgotten mine at home and my shift started in 15 minutes (silly me, I know). A man helped me right away, I think he was the manager. Really great to talk to, he made me feel very welcome there. And then another employee helped select and fit my shoes and he chatted with me the whole time which was fun. Honestly one of the best store experiences I've had in a while. They also have a great selection of good quality shoes. I could see they had a bunch of cute heels in there too and wish I'd had enough time to browse. From one customer service person to another, you guys do great. I don't live here, but when visiting a few years ago, I got two pairs of shoes--and they're the most comfortable shoes I own. So when nearby again, I went in. Once again, the service was quick, the sales person (Harold Dominici--a really great guy) really knew what he was doing and what would work. I was out of there in 15 minutes with 3 pairs of the most comfortable and stylish shoes. BTW, everyone was properly masked and the doors were wide open as well.
