After a rather unremarkable food weekend in Paso Robles, hubby and I were looking forward to something good...when we got home. Hence, we were somewhat surprised when we stopped in at Tita's and got what we deemed the best carnitas we'd ever had. And we've had a lot. We got lucky and beat the lunch time rush. It got really busy a few minutes after we arrived so we counted our lucky stars. I think they even had to turn away a large party of 12 people because they just couldn't serve them. Back to the food. Hubby ordered the carnitas burrito which was the size of a baby. He dug into it and immediately exclaimed about the meat within. So I had to try and I agreed it was good. For myself, I ordered the caldo/sopa de res and the revuelta pupusa and the squash/cheese pupusa. In case you're new to this, that's a lot of food. Only slight complaint about the pupusas was that the masa was a little thick in areas and there wasn't enough filling. Flavor-wise, it was good. Their curtido differed from other versions in that there was lots of chili pepper in it but thankfully, it wasn't super spicy. It was just right. The soup was very flavorful and the beef shank in it was nice and tender. I ended up taking most of it to go and really enjoyed it as a snack later in the afternoon. Took a while to get out of there because they were busy, and understaffed and folks were confused about how to order (or sit and wait for table service). First experience with pupusas and it was really tasty. Moist and juicy with good flavor and the sauce and pickled slaw added good crunch and texture. Carnitas were also given good reviews on Yelp and I would agree as they have a moist texture but still have that crisped flavor. The gals working there were very nice. Not sure if employees or owner(s). The table areas were plentiful (we did arrive after lunch hour, around 2:00) and so it was relatively quiet, but their was a loud motor noise that was not fun to listen to. We travel the I-5 with some frequency. This time, on the advice of a friend, we stopped for dinner at Tita's. The food is Ecuadorian, somewhat similar to Mexican. The Pupusas were delicious! 3.5 stars If you're driving between SF and LA and are looking for an interesting lunch option between the monotonous drags of McDonald's, Denny's, Carl's Jr's, and In-N-Out's, come to Tita's Pupuseria for some seriously authentic Salvadorian cooking! Don't expect much from the atmosphere--the restaurant isn't particularly clean, nor is the service particularly fast; but you will be wowed by the food! Immediately upon sitting down, we were started with thick-cut tortilla chips and fresh, spicy salsa. And don't come to Tita's Pupuseria if you're not going to order the pupusas, a "stuffed tortilla" filled with cheese and other fillings and griddled to perfection. We ordered one pupusa with squash and another with loroco (an edible flower), and both were delicious! They were served with a tomato salsa (which didn't add all that much flavor) and a huge bucket of curtido, a lightly fermented cabbage-carrot-onion slaw that was so refreshing and tasty, adding the perfect crunchy, cool counterpoint to the soft, warm pupusa! TLDR: Wait was over an hour, staff was rude and unhelpful, and food was nothing to write home about. After waiting over an hour for an extremely simple order (burrito and a tamale) and watching guests who arrived after us receive their food, I went to the counter to ask for an eta, and received my food within minutes, but the three people i was with didnt get their food and they continued to serve guests who ordered after us. To make things even better, The supreme burrito supreme i ordered for an extra $3, and it did not include any of the add ons. The same thing happened to my friend who ordered a supreme burrito, and when he asked the counter for the correct burrito they rolled their eyes and asked if he would just take it. After having to literally argue to receive the food he ordered, they made a new burrito for him and once again, no add ons. Then they were unwilling to provide a refund, and tried to withhold some of the charge from him. Not notifying your customers about your long wait time is shady and disrespectful to the customer. We saw someone else approach the counter to cancel his order bc he literally couldn't wait anymore. This was a great little rest stop on our drive from Seattle to Los Angeles. Fresh food with good flavors. The pupusas were the cheesy highlight and the cubano was yummy as well. I will say that the quesadilla that my brother got was super overpriced and disappointing since it was literally a large tortilla with some cheese. He was not impressed and regretted his ordering decision. I should also mention that the wait time was surprisingly long, so I wouldn't recommend going here if you are in a mad hurry to get somewhere. All in all, I'm glad we found a solid spot to eat. Fabulous! That's what I said after eating these pupusas. I ordered vegetarian options and they did not disappoint. I ordered a mixed loroco flower and squash pupusa and it was delicious. The other was jalapeño and cheese, which was also delicious, but of the two, I preferred the first one. My husband ordered a pork and cheese pupusa and two Al pastor tacos. He said that the al pastor was exactly how you would ever want it to taste when ordering tacos. He also loved his pupusa. Stopped by on our way up to NorCal, and we are glad we did. The food truck is open during Covid-19 and they have a nice covered area with tables. We order tacos and a Pupusa plate. The highlight is definitely the pupusas for me! They were big and stuffed full of beans and cheese. I love the crisp outside and the soft and melty filling. Salvadorian and Mexican in the plains! The time was late December some eleven days ago. The place that part of central California where, on one side, the plain unrolls in golden levels, and on the other swells upward toward the rounded undulations of the foothills. It was chilly; the sky a fathomless blue vault, the land dreaming in the afternoon glare, its brightness blurred here and there by shimmering heat veils. With nothing of interest in sight, talk between us was desultory. I thought we'd have some food at Buttonwillow when we stopped there to gas up. The sun was sloping westward, the sky infinitely blue and clear, golden light slanting across the plain's distant edges. Before us, a long stretch of West Side Freeway. They were miles in extent; miles upon miles of this level boring vein in the plains that curved and looped. I took Exit 257 and turned left into 58 and took another left into Tracy Ave. Past Starbucks and Denny's was Titas Pupuseria. The building must have been another chain fast food place in the past. I parked the car in the lot and we walked in for a meal. A young lady greeted us with a big smile and led us to our table. We had to order pupusas and they were great as were my eggs, Plantains, refried beans and everything else that came with them! If you have not had pupusa, you may want to try it. It is a traditional Salvadorean dish of a thick corn tortilla stuffed with a different filling of your choice. It is typically accompanied by curtido (a spicy cabbage slaw), and tomato salsa. The pupusas at Tita's were delicious and the service was find. The dining area is neat and cutely decorated. If you are going north or south on 5 and need to stop for food, Tita's is a great option. p.s. Dos viejas mensas working at this pupusa food truck. One's deaf and they both have ugly attitudes. Customer service was a BIG FAT ZERO. They messed up my order and didn't give me a drink i purchased. Went to get my food fixed and they kept denying that the food was made wrong and it was a hassle to get my food redone. From the beginning i felt rushed and discomfort from the lady taking my order because i didnt know i what i wanted . Overall the whole experience was rude and disgusting. As a person working in food you need to learn patience and how to be a decent human being in the food industry. They definitely should have been nicer from the start. She very rudely called me over to window to get my new order and i politely said thank you and wanted to thank her for the time for remaking my food from her idiotic mistake and she ends up slamming pickup window in my face with dirty looks. dont give your money here yall trust. the foods not even good. i feel like the people writing these reviews haven't had a good pupusa before because they could've been way better and this is aside from the disgusting customer service i received. This is a near perfect spot fpr us to stop when driving from the Central Coast to LA to see family. We went here for the first time today. It's a food truck. But, there are picnic benches and covered/shaded seating. So, good place for kids to eat and get the dog out. Huge plus, their food is delicious and homemade tortillas. I had two chicken soft tacos, the kids had beans and rice and my husband had the pupusa special (jalapeño and cheese.). His came with rice, beans and slaw. It was. Seriously the biggest pupusa I have ever seen! We may have our new favorite spot. On a side note, only reason for one less star is because we also had to hit up Circle K for a bathroom and milk. I was in the mood for some tacos, and this place was one of the two in the area that make them, so I went here. Ordered three tacos (2 asada, 1 cabeza) and two pupusas (one revuelto with pork and cheese and the other with bean and cheese) Tacos were really good! Pupusas lacked some flavor but I like that they make them fresh and you can watch them make it. The curtido didn't look fresh but tasted alright. We stopped here on our drive between LA and SF. It was a great alternative to the drive thru offerings - although I believe that they do have a drive thru. If you aren't pressed for time I would recommend dining in rather than utilizing the drive thru - especially if you go for their pupusas, because it is served with a side of curtido which is like a pickled cabbage slaw and its delicious. read more

Have you ever had an unexpected pleasure? It's that moment where you stop at a restaurant because your hunger is overwhelming, and you feel like you just can't go on... Admittedly we were all hungry, and stopping in Buttonwillow is not on our list of places when driving between Northern and Southern California. Be prepared for out of the ordinary OMG great pupusas! I mean the ones that after you have enjoyed them, you really wish that your tummy had room for more. The restaurant in and of itself, is fairly basic, and definitely could use a thorough cleaning. Because of the seating area being less than desirable, I was too afraid to check out the restrooms. The food however... Was so surprisingly good. We are only ordered three of the pupusas's as a quick snack to stave off the hunger. This is that moment I mentioned where we all wish that we had ordered more, even to go. The pupusas served at Tita's Pupuseria are the best I've had so far. Yes, even better than the homemade ones by Salvadorian friends. They are flavorful and have a decent amount of filling inside. Also, they are not cheap with the curtido; they bring out a full jar with your order. Most people probably drive past Tita's Pupuseria and don't give it a chance because of the location and building appearance but it's a big mistake. This is the best restaurant you'll find on the 5 Fwy before getting to the grapevine so if you are planning a long road trip down or up the 5, stop by, your taste buds will thank you for it. :) read more

Buttonwillow. Ever heard of it? Me neither. However, the paucity of dining options is quite pathetic along Highway 5 between the 580 cut-off in the north to the point where you suddenly recognize you're getting close to LA. As everyone knows, the usual suspects are Split Pea Andersen's where the girth doesn't meet the mirth, Harris Ranch where you can smell the cows before you eat them, and In-N-Out where a two-hour wait in the middle of nowhere is like watching a TLC reality show without a bathroom break. I read about Tita's in a Triple-A article I found on the web about the best places to eat on Highway 5. It was a very short list, but the writer recommended Tita's, and we like pupusas, so... Buttonwillow is a little over two hours outside of LA if you're not stuck in traffic, a big 'if' down there. Anyway, when we stopped to get gas, we got confused as to where the real brick-and-mortar Tita's was since the address led us to their food truck in a desolate parking lot next to a motel (photo: http://bit.ly/1Vdhvtn). I'm not sure if the woman was Tita herself, but she and her cohort appeared pretty settled in the spot since they had picnic tables set up shielded from the blistering sun by a large corrugated awning shaped like an army tent (photo: http://bit.ly/1CNutaX). I was surprised to see Menudo on the menu, and judging from a customer slurping nearby, it was a decent-size bowl for $8.75. But I got nervous about the road trip and passed on it. I was talking to a friend about some pupusas that I'd just tried in our neighborhood when she surprised me with her interjection. Not only has she eaten them before, but there's a place that makes the best pupusas just off the longitudinal highway connecting the two main population centers of California. I don't normally define the car trip itinerary, but I finally found an opportunity to try these pupusas today when.I was driving alone for so many hours. Tita's Pupuseria brings Salvadoran cuisine from Central America to (roughly) Central California. No, that's not a real region of California. But it's a surprising place to find "ethnic" cuisine all the same. It's on a street that's parallel with and almost right next to Highway 5, and it's not that tough to locate this place when the only other businesses around are gas stations, fast food chains, and perhaps a motel or two. I was greeted promptly upon entering the restaurant and allowed to seat myself when I stated that I'd be dining in. While I was perusing the menu, the employee brought out complimentary tortilla chips and pico de gallo. I'm not sure whether I was hungry, but the chips and salsa tasted great. The pico was really fresh, and I even enjoyed the more-than-medium spicy kick enough to brave the burn. I had to pick the pupusa revuelta ($3.75), which is indeed really good. It's the traditional corn masa, cheese, and pork, but it just tastes a little more yummy than other pupusas that I've had for some reason. Great crunchy slaw and lovely mild tomato salsa add texture and flavor to the experience, and it was awesome to have essentially unlimited amounts of each in a big plastic tub and a squeeze bottle, respectively. Having said all that, the pupusa is not all that much bigger than other restaurants' versions (if at all), making the price tag significantly higher than average. It's definitely worthwhile if you're passing by though. I also tried a few different tacos, which are served on two tortillas, with diced onion and cilantro on top and sliced radishes and lime on the side. The carne asada ($1.75) was my favorite. It's a little different from other versions that I've had, but the charred flavor and tender-enough beef was my favorite of the meal overall. The carnitas ($2.00) that one Yelp friend reviewed had plenty of pork flavor but were a little dry. The lengua ($1.75) was a disappointment with the least flavor of any beef tongue in recent memory. I definitely would avoid it. Overall, Tita's is a solid Salvadoran restaurant and a very welcome stop for "slow" food if you're driving the nearby roads. Just be wary of the gas prices because they're always a lot higher than the Lost Hills exit that's (relatively) not too far away. read more

Plus if you check out the reviews for the fast food spots in the same area, the reviews aren't good. When I saw that this food truck had 4 stars with over 400 reviews we were sold. This is a good choice if you are drive along the I-5 and your stomach started growling in the middle of nowhere. They have a variety of Mexican and South American dishes, and I opted for the pupusas. The pupusas were huge!! I ordered two but really could only scarf down one and a half. They also give you a bucket of pickled veggies on the side, so you don't have to carefully ration them and pick how much you want to eat with each bite. The pickles were not that flavourful or spicy though, it was just so-so. The pupusas were better and quite delicious. I had a mild stomach bloat afterwards. Was it from eating too much? Or was it from the food? I don't know, but it probably would give me pause if I pass by in the future. I drive from LA to Sacramento multiple times a month and stop here every time to get Pork and Cheese pupusas and I ask for extra wrapped separately for my friends in each city when I get there. They are so nice and the pupusas are bomb. I always call my order in ahead about 40 minutes, because I plan ahead on my drive. Tita's is always my first stop! It's also located next to a Tesla Charging station which is super convenient if you're making the drive and want to eat and charge! read more
