We also tried the Tostada Especial and a taco El vapor with shredded beef that they claim is their specialty. The crispy tacos were indeed crunchy, but they were hard crunchy. Not enjoyable. The shredded beef was ok, with average seasoning. Nothing to rave about. Potatoes in the potato taco were also barely seasoned. We love venturing to holes-in-the wall and were hoping this would be a hidden gem. Tito's hard shell tacos are unmatched. They are delicious and packed with flavor. The tacos de res are a favorite but sometimes I'll get the papa tacos. Those have a little too much potato but are still quite good. With the salsa and carrots it's outstanding. My husband has commented that their tacos al vapor are amazing, which I'll have to try on my next visit. Service is quick and luckily I've never had a visit where it was super packed with people. I've been on weekends and weekday nights. I wish they had drink stations where you can serve yourself but they have them behind the counter so you can serve yourself. Mexican food is my favorite and I've eaten a lot of it. One thing I've never gotten to experience is Tacos al Vapor. I was actually not even aware of their existence until I was in OC and made to go to Tito's La Especial (not to be confused with the other more famous Tito's). Located on the corner of 17th and Ross, Tito's La Especial is tough to miss. They have a parking lot in the back but it can be a tight fit. We came through the rear and the order counter is just ahead. The menu has all your favorites but the reason to come here is the Tacos Al Vapor, so I got a couple of those and a tostada. You'll pick your food up at the order counter. The food was awesome. Tacos Al Vapor are steamed so it's like eating a mini tamale. Unique, filling and delicious. Another standout was their beans. I would have loved to have taken a can or six of those home. They tasted homemade. You also get tasty marinated carrots on the side but I couldn't finish them because I was already full. If you're looking for amazing atmosphere or incredible service, this isn't it. Tito's La Especial is a great place for no frills Mexican food with an item you won't find at many other places. If I'm ever in the area again I'd certainly return. Recommended! read more

If you are looking for a hole in the wall with tacos Al vapor (steamed tacos) look no further. Tito's is old school and you see same faces working there from 25+ years ago. Super nice guys, always working hard. They have a small menu, their Al vapor tacos being the star. They offer shredded beef, potato, or bean tacos. All are so good. They come with a double corn tortilla. I like getting the combo plate because I LOVE their beans! They are refried and fried again!!!! Yum! I also like their hard shell shredded beef tacos. Don't forget to ask for extra pickled carrots, they are delicious. I don't visit Tito's too often because it gets expensive. I think tacos are priced at over $3 each. Despite the prices, it's still a must for me when I'm craving either hard shell tacos or tacos Al vapor. Try it! read more

This review is going to be for all of you who just want your food to go. I order here on the regular, I would say once every other week. The tacos are packed in a way that even if you eat them 30 minutes after you pick it up they will be hot enough to burn your fingers. I am lucky to live right around the corner from here so when I call to order, I leave my house about 3 minutes later and by the time I get there, they are ready. So how do I know about the time frame? Sometimes I get home and realize I need to do something like laundry or like last time I entered through my backyard and noticed my plant looking a bit droopy. I put my food inside and started water 1 plant and then figured oh I should water the rest so it was about 20 minutes. Afterward I went to wash my hands got all settled to eat and the phone rang another 10 minutes finally dig in and literally burning my fingers on the tacos. If you are in the area call ahead take them home and eat them in the comfort of your home. This place is totally no frills which why I usually take them home. Tacos, beans and don't sleep on their Nachos a la especial, nacho cheese all over and their delicious beans with jalapeños, oh so good. Service is always great! read more

I was introduced to this place several years ago by a friend and I've gone back many times since! Their unique way of doing tacos is so different from the more traditional tacos seen served by the various taco trucks and restaurants throughout Socal! There are not too many places where you can get tacos al vapor but its a really tasty and different take on your regular taco! The taco shell has a great texture thanks to it being steamed and the shredded beef inside that has been cooked with chilies is always flavorful and juicy! They give you carrots and lettuce if you want to add them to your tacos and you don't really need to add anything else to them as you get enough flavor from the meat and shell already! Everything comes out quick a few minutes after you order so the wait time is short and sweet! On their menu, they also have burritos, tortas, and other dishes as well that are also probably tasty too!
