Located off of 1st st in Santa Ana, carnitas son Julian offers ...... you guessed it, Carnitas!!! This was a Yelp find as I was in the area working and became hangry!!! To be honest I didn't really know how to order carnitas and the people working were super friendly and explained to me. You can order the food depending on how fatty you want the meat-- so I ended ordering the leanest carnitas, and a 1lb is plenty for two people to eat. I thought I could handle hot salsa-- nope. They make various salsas that while delicious they definitely are HOT. I definitely recommend giving CDJ a chance, let's support this restaurant!!!! :) 3/2023

A cut above the rest, the tenderness and the juiciness of these flavorful carnitas is what sets Don Julian's from everyone else. Nothing better than the cueritos as a taco alongside the home made authentic salsas . The salsa borracha pairs perfectly! I have not tasted any better carnitas. Let me first start with apologizing to this establishment! I only bought 1 carnitas taco and 1 carnitas burrito. I should have got more tacos but wanted to test the waters because it was my first time eating here but it won't be my last!! FYI, the burrito and taco isn't the biggest but the quality of the meat and ingredients more than make up for it's medium size! The carnitas here is the best I have ever eaten and I have devoured a lot of carnitas in my life! Good thing it's local so I can return frequently

The carnitas were amazing ! I had one carnitas and a surtido tacos, I wish I would have tried a cueritos taco they look really good! The red salsa has so much flavor it pairs up perfectly with the cueritos. The service was great, really nice staff. Feels like I'm at home eating, the ambiance is nice an peaceful, you could sit outside as well. My husband had a burrito of surtido he said it was the best carnitas he's ever had.

Their carnitas are sooooo good! Juicy and very flavorful. I drive from Rancho Cucamonga and buy quite a bit and eat it throughout the week.

Owners and staff are extremely polite and attentive. I drove 30 mins to come here and the food was worth it! The carnitas were soft, well seasoned and most importantly not salty! My family loved the cueritos. Definitely recommend this place!

This review is of their new Santa Ana location on 1st St. Tried the carnitas and the cueritos. My favorite by far are the cueritos. My goodness, such sticky, savory goodness. Perfection. Incredibly made with the exact texture that will melt in your mouth. Press a cuerito between your fingers and the sticky soft texture will win you over. A little pricey, but well worth it.

Carnitas Don Julian is seriously top tier. The carnitas are always fresh, super tender, and packed with flavor, with just the right amount of crisp on the edges. The place itself is a little rough around the edges, but that honestly makes it better and made up for with their kindness. It shows they're focused on the food, not trying to look fancy. In my quest to find good Carnitas, it's often hit and miss but this place has savory Carnitas in every bite. Staff was very helpful and the place was clean and cozy although small. If you appreciate a business that is dedicated to perfecting one thing and you love pork, well this is the place for you! Completely unassuming but the carnitas are amazing! You have your choice of carnitas tacos with fresh made tortillas....or carnitas with rice and beans and the beans are amazing! The salsas are also delicious, so you really can't go wrong. The star of course is the pork, which you can buy to take home and enjoy with the fixings of your choice! read more

The BEST carnitas place to go to it is a MUST try! I've been searching to find the best of the best and finally found it here at Carnitas Don Julian. The carnitas are juicy, flavorful and delicious. I tried the carnitas and cueritos on the side which were also so so good. The cueritos have a perfect soft texture and not hard like other places I've tried. Best carnitas in Santa Ana so far, you will not be disappointed. The salsas they gave us were good as well with a hint of spice perfect to add on top of the carnitas. El lugar es pequeño y estaba muy limpio y muy amables la cajera y los que empacaron nuestra orden. Definitivamente regresaremos! El sabor de la comida fue excelente! Woowww.... Where do I begin, this morning changed my entire life. These carnitas are absolutely fuegoo!! They obliterate el Toro by 200%, and every other place I've been to. There's another spot in LA that this place reminds me of called "carnitas el momo" if I could give this place 10 stars I would. The menu is simple, just carnitas and maybe a quesadilla and burrito. But you're not there for quesadillas or burritos, The Carnitas are where its at. Sitting in this restaurant also takes me back to my dad's hometown in San Miguel el alto Jalisco, people who are humble and just overall hard working. Thanks to Restaurant Week, we stumbled upon this gem, and we are so grateful. The hospitality alone would earn five stars. But then came the food. The tacos? Absolutely exceptional. The steak was tender and flavorful in a way that reminded me of eating throughout Mexico, you could actually taste the meat. A light, gentle pickle of vegetables on top, minimal cheese, nothing heavy or greasy. These are not the American-style tacos drowning in a pound of melted cheese. These are the real thing. The beans were lovely, the rice was solid, and my passion fruit winearita drink was genuinely a treat. Restaurant Week gave us the perfect low-pressure reason to try somewhere new, and we walked out with a new favorite. We'll be back for lunch. We'll be back for dinner. The restaurant may have potential because the food itself was flavorful, but it seemed like they were either understaffed or unprepared for the number of customers they had. Another disappointment was the drink selection. We were told they don't have a liquor license, so hard alcohol isn't available. Their sodas were canned, and when we asked for juice for the kids, they told us they were completely out. As for the atmosphere, the restaurant is on the smaller side and felt more like a converted house than a traditional restaurant, complete with a fireplace and television in the dining area. The food had good flavor, which is the only reason I'm giving more than one star. Unfortunately, the long wait times, missing meal, lack of drink options, and poor service made the overall experience disappointing.
