Very nice Sushi spot in Woodside/Sunnyside, with super attentive staff. Went there with two other people on a hot Summer evening, wanted to sit down indoors but they were full (it's not a massive restaurant, probably fits about 15 people inside at a time). However they made sure we had seats and glasses of water right outside their front door while we waited for a spot, very kind of them. Once we eventually got in and snagged a table, we saw that there's a team of 2-3 professional sushi chefs behind a counter in the middle of the dining area, with a display of sashimi and other goodies behind the counter. A good sign for sure. They have a pretty extensive menu (I'd like to come back and try a few more things at some point, like their pineapple fried rice), but we came specifically for the sushi and ordered accordingly. Had some Edamame and Tempura Shrimp to start, and then ordered the "Lover's Plate" (or something along those lines) for two, to share among the 3 of us. Menu said it came with a good sampling of different kinds of sushi and sashimi, which is exactly what we were hoping for. And holy crow, do they not skimp on the portions. The Lover's Plate is like $50, but it's well worth it. We were utterly stuffed and could barely finish the food - would have brought home more if we didn't know that sashimi rarely stays as good after a day or so in the fridge, so we crammed down as much as we could while sitting there. The bottom line about the sushi and sashimi is that they were good - maybe not spectacular, but again quite good overall. Clearly they know what they're doing, behind the counter. Meanwhile their staff came over multiple times to check on us, see if we liked the food or wanted anything else - they seemed genuinely keen on making sure we were having a good time, despite having a packed restaurant of other customers to handle as well. The bill wasn't cheap, but it wasn't crazy expensive either - just the right amount, given the quality of the food. The worst Asian food meal I have ever had. The Edamame was undercooked the Soba soup came with thin yellow noodles not the buckwheat noodles. By this point I was so disgusted that the Beef Negimaki could not make up for the rest of the meal. I spent almost $40 dollars for food that was absolutely not up to the quality expected. A friend and I met here for lunch and had a great time. We found street parking with no issues. However, I could see parking being an issue during busy hours. The staff were amazing, very attentive, and welcoming. I was shocked at how busy it was around 1:30pm, which was a good sign that the food was good. They have an extensive Asian/sushi menu, including a separate lunch special menu. We both ordered the lunch special that included a soup, small salad and option of meat, rice, and a sushi/California roll. I don't eat seafood, so I ordered the cucumber roll, and my friend had the avocado roll. This was my first time eating three cucumber rolls, and surprisingly, it was tasty. I enjoyed my entire meal, and it was fulfilling. I was able to take a small to go bag of my rice and teriyaki chicken. My friend ate all of hers and we were both satisfied with our meal and the service. We both enjoyed our refills of the hot tea throughout our meal, and you had the option of water as well. My friend N and I always go for the lunch special (11am-3pm daily except they close on Mondays) at TJ Asian Bistro. N has been telling people about this place and going there with her friends and family for almost 30+ years now. That's how long the restaurant has been there. It's definitely a popular lunch/dinner spot + a neighborhood gem with the locals who live around the area since they've really great lunch and dinner deals. Exceptionally fast and attentive service from the staff as well, you'll get seated almost right away if not within 10-15 mins even when they're very busy during lunch and dinner hours. They'll come over to people's table and refill the tea if they see your cups are empty. It's nice when the staff recognizes you and your friend right away when you visit from time to time for being regular customers. N has brought me here for my birthday last year and the year before that. So, we start coming here pretty often and now this has totally become our regular lunch spot. It's just 3-4 mins away of walking distance after getting off the 7 train. You can just hop back on the subway afterwards. They accept credit/debit card and cash as forms of payment. Their bathroom is very clean and spotless every time. Ambiance wise is casual and comfy, they've both outdoor and indoor seating. We decide to come here during dinner time instead as a change tonight though, just to see how we might also like it for dinner. You can get either hot green tea or iced tap water after being seated by the staff. Then, you'll be given a menu and several mins to think about what you would wanna get. Staff comes back to take your order shortly afterwards. The lunch/dinner bento box that they offer is probably by far the best deal out of the entire menu because you get to try a little bit of everything depending on what kind of meat/vegetarian protein you decide to order. We ordered the teriyaki salmon and teriyaki beef as two choices for the dinner bento box. But, there're so many other options for proteins. To start off, every meal comes with a refreshing salad drenched in their ginger dressing and flavorful miso soup with seaweed and tiny tofu cubes. Then, after you're done, the waitress brings over the entree which is our bento box. The bento box isn't served in a typical bento box but rather on a platter separated into 4 sections. Talk about a great, colorful presentation for social media or just to show your friends! The big piece of teriyaki salmon is always cooked to perfection just the way we would prefer, soft and tender on the inside and crispy on the outside when starting to take a bite out of the deliciousness. The veggies (carrot, asparagus, broccoli onion plus seaweed salad) that come with the salmon are very fresh and crunchy too. The outer skin of the shumai is ever so crispy and soft on the inside. The 6 pieces of California rolls taste fresh with avocado and imitation crab inside. Rolls are served with a swab of wasabi and small pat of fresh ginger. Bowl of rice is served on the side. On the other hand, the teriyaki beef is kind of dry and not as tender as I originally had thought. The cooking skills of the beef can definitely be improved and worked on. Otherwise, it would've been a different story. We asked for extra teriyaki sauce on the side as well. A very fulfilling, nutritious, healthy and worthy meal indeed. We ordered deliveries many times from TJ. This time we decided to dine in. It's a good-sized restaurant with at least 3-4 small tables outside and 6-7 tables for four inside the restaurant. They put a partition between each table. It looked perfect. The chairs were comfortable too. A small sushi bar is by the corner. Anyway, we had Yoki as our waitress. She was a terrific waitress, well trained too. We ordered double salmon for my bento which was served on a plate. Hubby had a sushi katsu combination. We also had salmon skin and seaweed salad for appetizer. Our dish came with a bowl of salad too. We both liked the finger dressing for the salad. One thing the place doesn't have is the yellow mustard. Hubby told Yoki to add that to the restaurant, or else he'll bring his own, haha! Maybe next time we can start cooking and making sushi there too. Overall, I prefer eating here rather than having it delivered. I loved my salmon, cooked to perfection. Hubby enjoyed his meal too. I really liked this place. I was hoping it would be great based off of all the positive reviews. Im surprised that I never came here until recently. But glad that I did. First we ordered the peach flavored sparkling sake to start off with our appetizer which is called the amazing composition, and it was amazing (haha) in taste and the presentation as it is a chef special with salmon, tuna, jalapeño, and seaweed salad. Even the waitress asked if we minded if she took a picture of it. I thought it would be spicy, but it wasn't. Also, ordered Tuna Tartar which had tuna, scallion, masago with special sauce. The special sauce gave it a good kick. The waitress gave us great recommendations. For entrees I ordered the Sashimi deluxe off of the sushi bar entrees section and asked if I wanted a bowl of rice to go along with it which I accepted. I was craving sashimi so this definitely helped. My friend ordered the Spider Roll and Hidden Mango Roll. I did try the Spider roll, but didn't get a chance to try the other roll. But if you're a fan of mango, you should try it. We were at the tipping point between almost full to full so we wanted something else so we shared the Seafood Yaki Udon. This was okay, but it needed some spice. But great for seafood lovers as it has shrimp, scallop, squid, kani and fish cake. Since we finished the first sparkling sake bottle had to order another flavor which was Yuzu. For some reason, whenever I'm sick, I tend to feel like either Chinese or sushi. I like having smaller pieces I can pick from, rather than an entire sit down type of meal and of course, soup. My husband recently got the flu, so I thought he may like the same idea, not having much of a full appetite and all. I ordered takeout and even from the time I called to make my order, I was greeted with such a friendly tone, it immediately put me in a good mood. I ordered him the vegetable teriyaki lunch box and I ordered myself the chicken teriyaki lunch box. Both of those are an amazing value for the amount of food you get and they come with a soup or salad. I also ordered the vegetable yaki soba noodles and shrimp gyoza to have as something to pick on throughout the night or save for the next day. The order was ready quickly and everything was packed neatly, which I always appreciate with takeout. The presentation is great as is the food itself. Even with feeling I'll and not having an appetite, my husband ate the whole vegetable teriyaki box in two sittings that afternoon. My chicken teriyaki was great, could have used a touch more sauce, but otherwise, super filling. I had also asked to switch out the shumai for vegetable dumplings which were delicious and the spring rolls were so nice and crispy, probably my favorite part. Even when I was completely full, I kept going back to pick at the order of shrimp gyoza, they were that amazing. Perfect flavor and with just a dab of soy sauce... over the moon. The yaki soba noodles were really yummy as well, but they did have a slightly overwhelming mushroom aftertaste to them. I'm not the hugest mushroom fan, so I do wish I'd noticed that it had mushrooms so I may have asked for those to be excluded. However, with some sriracha, that was so easily fixed. This is a really wonderful neighborhood gem with such a great staff and incredible food - all at a really decent price point as well. Highly recommend. When my husband was feeling better the week after, we actually just went to dine in. It was a great experience. Very friendly and attentive wait staff and quick service. The food had a lovely presentation, and I love the attention to small details. This time, my husband got the beef fried rice and I had the shrimp and vegetable tempura. Our appetizers were the chicken satay and shrimp gyoza. Nothing disappointed. I tried the fried rice myself even though I don't eat beef. I would say the rice itself was a touch oily and needed just a sprinkling more of salt, but the spicy kick aftertaste made up for it. That's just a personal preference though, it was still great. My shrimp and vegetable tempura was deliciously crispy and SO filling after the appetizers. It came with rice (which I didn't take) and a soup or salad, and of course, I went for the yummy miso soup. The chicken satay looked delicious and my husband devoured it. It has a nice turmeric/curry smell to it (but I was way too full from eating most of the shrimp gyoza... can never say no to those). For two of us dining in with me having a glass of wine and him having two ramune sodas, everything came out to about $59 which, considering how much food we had was a value, I'd say! The waiters always is tentative and makes sure you always have water or if you need a drink he is ready to serve you. This is worth it. Delivery service is also great. They actually take the time to put every sushi roll in a different container so the flavor stays fresh. The sauce to each roll stay on the actual roll. I wish I had found it sooner... the prices are super affordable, which make you wonder how good the quality is, and then the quality turns out to be delicious. I was able to try regular rolls and specialty rolls, and all of them tasted fresh and prepared with care. They use the perfect amount of rice, were generous with the fish, and had beautiful plating. Right along Skillman Ave on the Sunnyside / Woodside border is TJ Asian Bistro, which has steadily become one of the area's most well known sushi establishments. The name (#1) may not exude the Japanese authenticity like some of other sushi joints in the area, but they're a solid choice, especially amongst the Chinese-owned sushi community. (#2) The place is not large, but they've done a good job with the layout to include a nice array of tables for all parties. While there is a sushi counter to watch the chefs in action, as expected, there is no omakase available here. The pricepoint of the menu wouldn't support something so drastic, but hard core sushi fans may stand to be disappointed. No matter, the intimate lighting of this place makes it pseudo date friendly and good for small groups. Sushi wise, they are not small. The portions are impressive given the grade of fish they're using and dwaring much of the local competition. The prices might feel a tad bit higher for Sunnyside / Woodside, but certainly merited given how substantial the meat is. Generally speaking, I leave the funny name rolls (#3) for everyone else and try to stick with their simple stuff that have one or two ingredients at best. Their handrolls are nicely stuffed and the nigiri seems to have a nice slab of fish on the rice. A little wasabi and an appetite and I'm good to go. I haven't tried much of hot food items minus the tempura and katsu sections, but I would reserve much of the food for sushi. I would only resort to the cooked portion if I had a non-raw food eating companion with me. Probably one of the best sushi spots in Queens! It's located right near the 52nd st subway stop off the 7 train. We were seated by the bar and they gave us a free app because my friend lives around there and goes a lot. The sushi is by far one of the freshest sushi places I've had- even including manhattan...especially for the price!!!! We got a bunch of dishes to try- I can't remember which ones but the Jalapeno Yellowtail is SO GOOD!!!! The jalapeno really gives it a KICK! We shared a bunch of sashimi and dragon rolls- SO GOOD. Everything was really fresh and the service was really nice!! I also recommend the Hamachi-Kama (broiled yellowtail neck with spicy ponzu sauce)- it looks like a wing but it's the meat is so tender. Yay - we found our new Japanese spot! Despite me often having reservations with sushi restaurants that have "Asian," "bistro" or "lounge" in the title (because that usually = "fusion where we offer Thai/Japanese/Chinese/other and don't do any really well"), this is happily NOT that kind of place.
