Love JJ's! The staff are so friendly and sweet. A perfect compliment to any meal you have here. I am a huge fan of the Edamame Pot stickers with just enough wasabi so they aren't overpowering. They're served in a wasabi cream sauce that is velvety smooth and comforting to the soul. Their Kani salad is the biggest portion I've ever had served anywhere and it's quite delicious! I always found the green crunch interesting. Its not my favorite as I believe it lacks flavor usual "crunch" has but still tasty and a nice textural addition to the dish. Astoria staple, decades on the block..for a reason! Prices are affordable for all your favorite dishes. Ordered here multiple times for take out but recently sat in with my husband and it was so nice. Seating is a little tight but it was not crowded inside and we were taken care of immediately. Definitely one of the better sushi spots I've been to in NYC. The spot looks small on the outside but it's fairly large inside. I was greeted immediately when I came inside so service is spot on for sure. Food service was timely and the food I've had was very good. Grilled teriyaki chicken w/ Rice filled me up along with the spicy Tuna roll I had as an extra. It is pretty costly though. All that along with the Iced Tea I ordered came up to $27 but I don't mind it. It came up to that price because I ordered an entree along with sushi a la carte on the side. For those of you in Astoria still going to Watawa... why?? They charge an obscene amount for food that honestly isn't even that filling. Dropping close to $100 for two people is comical when you walk out still kinda hungry. The portions are smaller, and the prices are sky-high. But here? At JJ's? The quality is better, the portions are bigger, and the pricing is way more reasonable. Every time I come here, I go for the chicken teriyaki lunch box -- it's massive. I came in for lunch, and it was practically empty (I think they get busier at dinner time - there's room for 20-ish, lets's say?). They have a robust selection of lunch specials, available from 12-3:30 PM every Monday-Thursday. I opted for the "sushi lunch special," which included a generous serving of miso soup, salad, and both sushi and sashimi. The final price was ~$16 + tip. Everything tasted fresh, and it was just what I was looking for! I appreciated the prompt service as well. This is a great place for a quick and reasonably-priced solo meal during your lunch break, or for a casual meal out with friends. Dark lighting and close quarters, yes, but these merely add to the intimate vibe. Only real drawback is the proximity of some tables to the door, which adversely affects temperature and comfort. The fact that I was able to take down the plate (see pic) to myself really sums up how good their sushi is. The fact this place is across the street from me makes it even better. I don't know if it's price psychology but because their standard rolls are $1 more than other places, I just end up getting mostly their special rolls and sushi pieces. Many of the reviews on here seemed promising & the fact that the sushi lunch special was slightly cheaper definitely solidified the decision. The service was very fast (3 standard rolls in about 15min) the price was great ($12 for 3 rolls & soup or salad) and the first few bites were great...this started off as an easy 4-5 star review. However as my hunger subsided I came to realize the sushi really wasn't as good as I though the first few pieces in. Was it bad? No. Just not great. Not the freshest, and the ratio was probably 70% rice 30% fish. BUT for the convenience, service and price I would eat here again. Overall I'm glad I found this spot. There were sighting of roaches here a few weeks ago (according to customer review few weeks ago).The floor lay out is long and narrow and it can get tight during peak hours. I consider myself a regular here. I usually order lunch special. The price ranges from 7 to 9 dollars, with salad or soup on the side. I feel that most food choices for lunch here are marginally better than the other Japanese restaurants in the area. They accept reservations, but they are probably not necessary during lunch time. Sushi and sashimi are always served fresh no doubt. Bento boxes comes in different shapes and sizes. Staff are attentive and friendly. JJ's is one of Astoria's finest and when I say finest, I don't mean just the food; it has a, I don't want to say "sexy" but, contemporary look that the younger groups would come in for sushi as a hang-out spot or maybe even a date. This is a very small sushi bar so don't be surprised if you'll have to wait outside. Almost all of the special rolls are tempting and delectably made. If you dine in, you will see how much effort the chef puts in making the rolls. Some of the best rolls are the Fancy Dragon Roll, Arizona Sunset and my most favorite, the Scallop California Roll, which is a richer California roll with cooked scallops, tobiko and crunch. Mmm... Decent-priced for an Astoria sushi joint but given its ambiance and food, it's well worth it. If you're in Astoria and feeling some raw fish, you MUST go to JJ's. read more

There were a few small tables, a group birthday dinner, & a couple at the sushi bar. We ordered the wasabi edamame dumplings (think this dish turns everyone I bring here into a JJ's fan), I ordered the black cod with black sticky rice, coconut, & lemongrass sauce as a main dish and a tuna roll. Date ordered a spider roll & salmon skin roll. The black cod was Awesome. It was like what Asian fusion should be like, & plated French style maybe? The cod was fresh & tender, the lemongrass sauce had a nice zing to it, the rice was unexpectedly sticky & with the giant mound of shredded coconut on top, the dish was a tropical explosion all eaten together. I ordered delivery yesterday on February 1st. Yes, it was Monday. They close. However, delivery.com accepted my order. I was waiting for my delivery for over two hours. Since delivery.com send me the confirmation email. Plus yelp says it's in process. I called to delivery.com's customer service. The guy I talked to, he said he called to the restaurant but on one answered. He told me to wait 30min more. If delivery won't come after 30min, he will give me refund. I have been already waiting for the food never come over 2hours. Just refund not going to solve anything. You guys need to communicate. Delivery.com automatically charge service fee.
