On a recent cold and frigid night. My wife and I had a hankering for sushi and sashimi. We were in the area and based on their stellar reviews were decided to try out Yoi Sushi Japanese. We are very familiar with the area and must have walked passed this neatly tucked away gem without ever noticing it. Our son had mentioned that he and his friends have been going to a sushi place near Asian Jewel, our former dim sum go to place. When we sat down to order, my wife and I were quite impressed by how clean and cozy the restaurant was. Kind of on the small side with a few tables on the ground floor level. The menu offered cooked food as well as fresh sushi. We decided to start with the sushi & sashimi combo. They also offered a sushi or sashimi a la carte menu where you can choose to order by the piece. I believe that if you choose one of their standard menu sushi or sashimi orders and pay with cash, the a la carte price per piece of sushi / sashimi is only $1.35 / piece! Well we were famished and in addition to the sushi & sashimi plate we ordered two rounds of sushi & sashimi a la carte. Their salmon and yellow tail was so fresh and so scrumptious as was the sweet shrimp. The tuna was also very yummy and did not disappoint! When all was said and done we were quite happy with our experience with Yoi Sushi Japanese. This is a place that looks very unassuming from the outside but has a nice interior design. I came in for a late lunch and luckily there was plenty of seating available. I believe they also have an upstairs dining area. I decided to try out the lunch special, which consisted of pork katsu, shrimp tempura, miso soup and vegetable udon. The portions were very generous and I liked the visual presentation of the food. My issue was the actual flavor or more specifically the lack of flavor in the food. The pork katsu was extremely dry and just didn't taste like there was any seasoning on the meat. It was more tolerable when mixing with the tonkatsu sauce. The udon broth was also extremely bland. The most flavorful thing was the passion fruit juice. I would not rule out coming back to this place but I will definitely order sushi or sashimi instead. The doorway is quite inconveniently placed because only one average sized person can squeeze out at a time. It was crowded the night we went too... We ordered the seafood ramen ($17.95), super bento box ($24.99), Usutsukuri ($12.99), 3 roll special ($15), and a la carte sushi/sashimi. They have a deal where you can order as many pieces of sushi/sashimi for $1.35 each as long as you ordered at least $20 of food from the regular menu and pay with cash. Overall, I would only order their sushi/sashimi because everything else tasted mediocre, or we didn't quite like it. Prices are good and affordable for the quality and portion size you get. I ordered takeout from here during the pandemic more times than I can remember, but I finally had the chance to dine in recently. It just so happened that they had a limited promotion where you could order as many pieces of sushi/sashimi as you wanted for $1.35 each (as long as you ordered at least $20 of food from the regular menu and paid with cash). We ordered the "sashimi regular" set (12pc sashimi, selection varies) to hit that minimum, and then from the promotional menu we ordered around 20? more pieces. Fish was generally delicious across the board. I particularly liked how rich and slightly sweet the salmon that came with the sashimi set was (fattier than the the salmon a la carte which had a lighter flavour). Other highlights included the amaebi sweet shrimp (which is honestly a steal at $1.35 per piece) and the red snapper. Service was very friendly and efficient. Price point ultimately came out to around $2/piece (including tax/tip) which is pretty good for sushi of this quality. Ordered here a few times. We usually get the special roll platter and we usually substitute the coconut roll with spider roll or shrimp tempura. There is an extra charge for substitution. The quality of the sushi is good and the flavor is good. I like how all the rolls on the platter is cooked as not everyone eat raw fish. You would never know from the outside looking inside that the place would have so much seating. There's an upstairs part if there's an over fill of people on the first level. Once I was brought upstairs and was given a menu, I saw much more seating and how extensive the food options were here. I decided on the cash option of sushi. Where it was $1.35 per piece and you can either do regular sashimi or get it with rice. I decided for mostly sashimi. I was very full afterwards. The space is small but good for small parties. Nice minimalistic decor inside. For food, I have mix feelings. While the sashimi was fresh, the quality is ok. They have an extensive menu, and they have $1.35 sushi/sashimi options if you pay with cash and you order over $20 worth of food (excluding the $1.35 sushi/sashimi). Since I can't eat raw food, I opted for their chicken teriyaki, tamago sushi and kani sushi. I love their chicken teriyaki. It's soft, succulent, and it's not overly oily which I appreciate. They also give you a good amount of vegetables, and the rice pairs wondefully. The tamago was slightly sweet, and a bit cold, and the kani wasn't horrible either. I probably wouldn't go for the kani again though. . My mother tried their grilled squid, Rainbow Roll, and seaweed salad, and she says it was wonderful. They accept both cash and credit card! The place caught me by surprise. From the outside, you wouldn't think much of it and once you go inside, it is a small establishment with not many tables but what counts was the food. We ordered the 3 rolls where you can order any 3 rolls from a selection so I got the spicy tuna, futomaki and yellowtail jalapeño which came with a miso soup. All the rolls were very fresh and delicious. Beware the yellowtail jalapeño is very spicy since they leave the seeds in the jalapeños. My boyfriend ordered kraken roll which was a roll made of out of squid which I thought was the best of both worlds. The squid was beautifully cooked and the combination of baked kani, cream cheese and avocado messed so well. The presentation of all the plates were beautiful and eye catching. He also ordered a variety of sashimi and all the fish was cut in perfect slices and were buttery texture which was mouth watering. The manager came around to ask everyone how their food was which I thought was fantastic and made the whole experience pleasant altogether. I will most definitely be returning. read more
