We had Terry remodel our 1940s bathroom - electrical, plumbing, tile, tub, painting, toilet, sink, lighting, cabinet, exhaust fan, grab bars, counter, plaster repair - the works! It's now been about 4 months since he finished the work and each day I look at our new bathroom and think "wow!' He did a great job! He was patient and always responsive to any questions or issues, and cleaned up each day. Great workmanship too. He started out by measuring and answering any questions we had, offering ideas here and there but letting us make our own decisions. Unlike some other contractors, he did not give fancy 3D architectural renderings, nor did he accompany us to each supplier to pick out products. Here's what his process was, which was perfect for us. We received a proposal contract which listed each item or task, along with a cost allowance for each item. If we chose something more expensive than its allowance, the final price would reflect the increase. If what we chose cost less than the allowance, the final cost would go down by that much. So we had a bottom line price from the start and would have the final decision on expenses. He then also gave us a list of his suggested suppliers from which to pick out all of the products. We worked with those suppliers to make selections at their respective showrooms (they work with TLC regularly), and they forwarded our selections to Terry. A few selections we made were from suppliers not on his list, which was fine, but the places he suggested were where most of the items came from. When all selections were made, he provided us with a revised proposal contract reflecting our selections and revised costs. Then he - not us - did the ordering from each vendor to insure that all of the parts and pieces fit together and would work, plus that way his contractor discount was applied. His final contract to us was transparent and showed all prices. No additional markups, no change order fees, no nonsense. If someone wants computer-generated architectural renderings, having him present at each supplier meeting, one central showroom where every needed product and samples are all in one place, then this type of contractor isn't likely for you. If however, you want a remodeling contractor that not only provides the quote but also does the actual work himself, with reliable suppliers that work with him, with a fair price and a minimal amount of stress (if that's possible lol), then TLC's a good choice. We have had two projects done in our house by Terry and his team and both were exactly what we hoped for. The first was finishing our attic to use as a gym. Terry was no nonsense about our quote, didn't try to upsell us on things we didn't want or need, overall a great price point for the work we wanted done. The space was tricky with all the angles but is perfect for a gym and we use it all the time. So of course when we were ready for an overhaul of our bathroom that previously had a tub and no shower and lots of outdated design, we called Terry. He was able to fit us in faster than we expected, which was great. I drew a design for him and picked out materials and he made it exactly as I imagined it. He was a great resource along the way, any time we had questions about something his expertise and experience really showed. And you can tell he really cares about the quality of the work done. He was good about updating us the timing of everything. Unfortunately, with most things in the supply chain these days, there were unforeseen delivery delays and issues that were completely outside of our control and Terry managed them well. He provided helpful solutions to tricky problems. And he made sure to come as soon as possible to finish things once we finally had everything we needed. We were very pleased with the remodeling of our kitchen and 2 bathrooms they did a few years ago. We recently encountered an issue with some of the flooring. Terry came out and reviewed the situation. He then ordered replacement material and came back to do the repair. There was no cost to us, even after we offered to cover the material cost. After reading the positive reviews on Yelp, I reached out to Terry for a third quote for a basement remodel. I found it odd that his appointment took a fraction of the time the other two did, with a lack of precise measurements or probing questions to flesh out the bid. He promised a bid in 3-4 days. Two weeks later I reached out to him, thinking perhaps he lost my email address (I don't know how it would disappear from your phone, but just trying to be optimistic). Later that day Terry responded that he is booked out through the end of the year and probably should have told me that earlier. I suspect he wasn't interested in this job and hoped that I would just forget that he was going to send a quote. Worst of all, he has delayed my project by several weeks as I still have to find someone to provide me with a third quote. So disappointing, stay away! read more

Terry and his team did an amazing job adding a wall to convert our open loft space to a bedroom/office. He got us an estimate quickly and was easy to communicate with. He fit our work in within the month and completed the job in 5 days! We were so impressed with the quality of work, it looked like the room had been built that way. We live in a condo building and our neighbors also complimented their work and attitudes during any interactions. I really don't know why our experience with Terry was so different from the others listed here. After canceling our initial appointment literally an hour before it was scheduled to occur and rescheduling for a week later, he finally came to inspect the work that we wanted done to our condo. We had a good conversation while he was here and Terry promised to provide estimates for three different options by the end of the day. When we did not receive a quote for over a month, we emailed him to see what was going on. Terry claimed to have sent it a month before and promised to send it again that evening. We heard nothing for two more weeks and then emailed Terry again. He again claimed to have sent the estimate and promised to send it immediately. We checked our spam folder just to give him the benefit of the doubt - nothing from Terry. A week later, a full two months after our initial meeting, Terry sent us an estimate that was clearly a form letter. Three bolded words in the entire document had been changed to our name, the price for labor, and the price for materials. The letter was dated for a week earlier. None of the options we discussed were mentioned and nothing about the job beyond the costs. Terry's quote for the job was also more than 5-6 times the phone estimate he gave us when we described the work that we wanted done (and we were very precise) prior to scheduling the initial appointment. One of our best friends is a contractor in Tennessee. We described the job to him and he thought that Terry was trying to price himself out of the job and/or make a killing. We wondered if we were dealing with the same guy that got 5 stars on Yelp. After verifying that it was the same guy, we felt it was our duty to warn others. I have no idea why we had so many issues with Terry and getting a simple quote for this job, or why he felt it was necessary to lie or price gouge us. We would have much preferred honesty if he didn't want the job. read more

Project number 2: Bathroom remodel from wall-mounted, mass-produced terrible-ness to crystal chandeliers and free-standing tub with rain shower head... Check! Terry did a beautiful job on our project (aka the Princess Bathroom) and really turned a drab, uninspiring space into a relaxing sanctuary. He paid attention to every detail and we couldn't be happier. He did the plumbing and electrical, which makes life easier than dealing with multiple contractors in your home. The only thing he out-sourced was the refinishing of the hardwood floors in my office and the hallway He even tolerated me changing the project halfway through (since you're here... can we also remove a wall and add a pocket door between the bedroom and the office, then repaint both rooms? Terry helped rebuild the entryway in my home and it looks better than I could have imagined. There was even a hiccup with a broken pane of glass surrounding the doorway and he came back and had it fixed in a day. Terry worked with my schedule, had all of the work done within a week, and never worried me with the typical contractor work of, "Oh, I've got one small project to fix before I get around to yours." I just bought a new house that needs a lot of work. The highest priority was gutting and remodeling the first floor bathroom. Terry (the owner of TLC Contracting) has done a ton of work for my parents and a small job for my brother and I knew I wanted to use him to remodel and design my small bathroom. Even though I live in Chicago, he was happy to take the job. He helped me come up with colors, a design concept and talked over material and furniture choices with me. He presented me with a budget and I was frankly thrilled. He started work and everything went super smoothly - at least from my perspective! Apparently there were a couple of "bumps in the road" that he informed me about and handled without stressing me out at all. He took care of everything and worked efficiently, quickly and with enormous attention to detail. He is a true perfectionist and doesn't cut corners. I was so impressed with TLC Contracting, that I chose TLC to be my first foray into posting on Yelp. Terry provides service that is above and beyond any I have received from a contractor. Here are some bullet points: 1) Terry showed up on time and ready to go on the free estimate (yes, can you believe it - a free estimate without any pressure to sign contract on the spot!) 2) While providing the estimate, Terry provided numerous options of which to choose from. I never felt like I was being led to make a certain choice (whether it be materials, design, etc) 3) Terry's estimate was the most detailed, and was right on par with other estimates I received. One of the reasons I selected TLC to build my stone patio was due to the detail of the estimate; I wondered if other contractors would come back with hidden fees or need to alter the budget once the work started. 4) The job was done ahead of schedule. Yes, that's right, I wrote AHEAD OF SCHEDULE. This made the overall project far LESS expensive than the estimate. Additionally, Terry was on-site for the duration of the project which was really impressive. 5) The finished project is SUPERB. With the nice weather of late, my wife and I have been having every and any meal we can on our new stone patio. I only wish that I hadn't lost my digital camera on a recent trip to Jamaica (that could be a whole other Yelp review...) or I would have posted the beautiful end result. After replacing doors and woodwork in our home, which we were extremely satisfied with, we had TLC Contracting do two other projects: (1) Paint the interior of our house (excluding the kitchen), including closets and ceilings, and install mirrors in the dining room. (2) Reface a built-in china cabinet in our dining room with oak, including leaded glass windows. We are extremely pleased with the outcome of these two projects and the total makeover and look of our home. We would absolutely recommend TLC Contracting (Terry Casper) for any project you have - big or small (and he will do small projects, just ask him). We already have quotes on a few other projects around the house and will probably see Terry again in the future. The two projects were going on simultaneously and, as you can imagine, our house was in a state of upheaval. Terry Casper was a pleasure to work with throughout this process. He took care of absolutely everything, from picking up paint and shopping for glass for the windows and new hardware for the cabinet doors to rehanging pictures when the painting was done (including rehanging again when the pictures no longer fit where they were first rehung). He patched walls, filled nail holes before painting, took care of all the details for a perfectly finished project. He was open to new ideas I had for my house and helped to implement them. He and/or his assistant were there to help clear closets and then put things back.
