First off who says girls can't be DJs? Not Toast and Jam as thy are known for female DJs which I loved. I am a bit of a feminist at heart and love to dance so it was a no brainer for me to select Toast and Jam. Rachel was very knowledgeable about many genres of music. And was able to offer many suggestions in which was very helpful when it came to what music I was going to walk down the aisle and our introduction. Nothing cheesy here as you don't have to waste your breathe crossing out the chicken dance. They already have a do not play list which saves the couples time. And old school dance party was the genre I wanted along with the current hits and a bit of Latin flare. Rachel was on point from ceremony to entrance and ending the night which we extended since we loved all the music. Their rates are very reasonable. And they played the most beautiful version of the tarantella as I was complimented by my Italian family. The dance floor was rarely empty as Rachel knew what songs to play. And she was accommodating to my husband and I who thought it would be cute to surprise me with the first dance song. She kept it top secret until the day of. BTW it was Billy Joel She's Got a Way. Even though I'm sure T&J don't totally want me to tell my story...because they don't prefer that their clients call them 8 DAYS BEFORE THE WEDDING but ok that's what happened. My partner and I decided 8 days before the wedding, that, well, we were going to get married. It was a push from my father who was dying. We arranged for a FAST wedding, and while my father wasn't able to make it to the wedding (he passed days before) the wedding was truly a profound, raw, emotional and beautiful experience. And Mary from T&J rolled with every single punch we threw her way. My partner was in Puerto Rico, and I was dealing with the death of my father. I know this is a lot for a Google Review, but honestly it just shows the empathy of Mary and the whole crew at T&J. They pulled together a photo booth for us, worked with our pretty wild and spastic playlist and created the most memorable night in a blizzard for my hubs and I, and 75 of our closest friends and family. Guys, this is all so fast, I don't even have official photos yet. But I'll get those up once I get 'em back. Had the pleasure of working with Chris (one of the few male deejays T&J has on staff) for our wedding reception. We met Chris at their Fullerton office 8 months prior to our event and really just hung out and shot the shit. He was so comfortable to be around and was such a super nice dude. From there we started a shared google doc that my wife, Chris, and I all updated periodically with song requests and ideas for our big day. A week before our party we met again and finalized all the little details; like Chris announcing our toasts (for which he provided a wireless mic), calling up tables for the buffet, and all the must plays. We have used Toast & Jam for our corporate holiday parties and were lucky enough to get Leslie each time. She's was great at consulting us prior to the party, and is always on time for our events. I have to admit it: I am a music snob of the worst kind, and my musical preferences have been frozen in carbonite since approximately 2010. I was very anxious about ceding control of the music (the lifeblood of a wedding reception) to a complete stranger, and thus expose myself to the risk that I was going to have to endure either a) Chicken Dance / Electric Slide, b) mumble rap's greatest hits, or c) Sweet Caroline. First, to assuage my concerns about the music resembling a 4th grade dance, T&J has a list of "will not play songs" (can find it on the website, but includes Chicken Dance / YMCA / Electric Slide and songs of their ilk). Second, T&J gives you the opportunity to provide a list of songs that you either strongly want played or strongly do not want played (didn't want my 85 year old grandmother having a heart attack to Cardi B's WAP). Third, our DJ, Kate Porter, was like an recommendation algorithm for which Spotify would pay millions to secure the code. As with all T&J DJs, you can mark up their sample playlist to highlight what you really like, stuff you don't like so much, etc. Kate clearly put my highly annotated list into her computer brain algorithm, resulting in an immaculately curated four hour dance party / groove sesh which kept people on the dance floor all night. Birds of a feather flock together so most of my friends are music snobs as well (insufferable mid-30s white guys), and everyone was enthusiastically complimentary of the great tunes selected and sequenced by Kate. Most importantly, my now-wife and her friends had an absolute blast as well. One more point worth mentioning: Kate acted as a de facto wedding coordinator, and worked with the venue staff on timing speeches / dances with the meal courses etc., set up, which was an enormous help (we did not have a wedding coordinator and so every logistical requirement that you yourself do not have to think about is worth its weight in gold). Strongly recommend T&J and Kate Porter, especially if you've got a particular musical palate (read: if you're a music a$$hole like me). Our philosophy is to hire professionals and let them do what they know best, which is Toast and Jam's business philosophy, so it was a perfect match! DJ Rachel was wonderful to work with - she provided great ideas on how to structure the reception toasts, and she quickly figured out our preferred styles of music and worked in our specific song requests throughout the night. Our guests RAVED about how great Rachel was. She had the dance floor packed and several guests mentioned that they needed a break but just couldn't leave the floor because the music was so good!! We loved how she kept the energy up throughout the night and made sure that guests enjoyed themselves. I was referred to Toast and Jam by my wedding planner at Olive Fine Weddings and Events. It was very last minute hiring a DJ as the restrictions for COVID had finally loosened. I contacted Toast and Jam and they were very responsive. They worked with my budget and ultimately got paired with Mike Palmer. HE WAS AMAZING. I danced the entire night, and even the guests that didn't feel comfortable dancing still complimented the music. Mike listened to our very specific requests and I can't say enough good things about him. Every song that he played I kept saying to myself "I love this song!" I. LOVE. KARIN. Yes, of course, she was an absolute please to work with from day one. She asked us great questions in order to understand how she should run the night, what was important to us, what kind of vibe we were going for. Most weddings we had attended in the past had really killer bands play at them, so we were a little apprehensive to go with a DJ but it made more sense with our venue. I could NOT be happier with our decision to work with Karin at Toast and Jam. We gave her a few must play songs and gave her an idea of the vibe we were going for (think 2:00am at The Hangee-Uppe in Chicago) and she absolutely delivered. Could not imagine a better DJ!!!! Picking a DJ in Chicago is hard! There are so many options! Luckily our day-of-coordinator had a vendor recommendation list and under DJ it said "Toast & Jam - they are the only DJ group I even want to mention on this page." We were paired with Katy Albert who was phenomenal!! First of all, Katy is just a person you want to be friends with! She's so positive, authentically caring and genuinely enthusiastic about your event (in our case, wedding reception). She listened to, and incorporated, all of our preferences. We didn't give Katy too much direction - just here's our general vibe, likes and dislikes, and please keep everyone dancing - and she delivered!!! So many guests of all ages remarked how great the music was because Katy knew to play the fun-at-all-ages music (a.k.a., ok for old people) at the beginning of the night and moving gracefully into the modern bangers at the end of the night. She read the room perfectly! What I didn't realize I wanted in a DJ was the attention to detail in things unrelated to music, which Katy handled terrifically. For all of our speakers (and we had many), Katy went around and gave a heads up that their speech was coming up soon, so to get into position. It made everything flow seamlessly and I didn't even notice it was happening. By the way, I never pointed out to Katy who our speakers were. She knew to work with our day-of-coordinator to identify our speakers so we could just enjoy our evening. There are so many other things she handled flawlessly behind the scenes, like announcing our shuttle departures without disrupting the dance floor, which is boring to mention here, but so appreciated from a couple who wanted everyone to have an awesome time on the dance floor - which they did!! Tabitha took it to the next level, enough so that our reception ended in a "Tabitha!" chant. Amazing. If you are thinking of hiring a DJ, T&J is a must. Our original wedding was canceled due to the pandemic, but we thankfully were able to have it this past Labor Day weekend. Not only was T&J great to deal with when we had to cancel the first time, but even better when the real deal happened. Kate, our DJ extraordinaire, was amazing to work with. She got the vibe that we were going for and had our dance floor packed the second it opened until the last dance. But not only was Kate managing the dance floor but did SO much more. She helped move the evening along when the hotel seemed lacking in that department. And she made the evening worry-free and amazing. We really can't say enough. The night started off with chaos. The "DJ" (and I use that term lightly as they sent the photo booth manager instead of a real DJ) wasn't prepared at all. He introduced me (the grooms mom) and my new husband as Mrs "S" and Nick. Never said my husbands last name. Then he plays the incorrect song for the first dance. It was supposed to be Perfect by Ed Sheeran w/Andre Bocelli and he just plays the Ed Sheeran version. The brides family is Italian this would have been a great combo to incorporate (and it was requested by the bride). All night he plays club music. There wasn't a variety of music for all ages and there were only (2) slow songs all night. I spoke to several people who went up and asked him to play a slow song and he just kept playing fast songs. I looked around the room and the guests in the age groups from 35 and up were either sitting or standing waiting for a song they knew and could dance to. I finally went up to him, as I'm the mother of the groom and asked if he could slow it down for a few songs and mix it up and he said the next song would be slow. This was the second to the last song of the night! I know guests that NEVER stepped a foot on the dance floor because the music was similar to "club" music. The reception started an hour late but he refused to play an hour later, so technically played one less hour than supposed to. This guy didn't know how to read a room and music to me is a huge important part of the wedding. So disappointed that I couldn't dance more with my husband, friends and family. It's hard to hear from them after the wedding, that the music sucked. So disappointed in this company. Everything that I've read in the previous reviews didn't happen with this one. The "DJ" sent a sheet to them for song suggestions and never spoke with them on the phone to go over that night, songs etc. Their original DJ was supposed to be Chris, who I heard was very good but we had to postpone the wedding due to Covid and got the photo booth manager instead. I would have rather had them tell us that they didn't have a DJ for that day and keep our money, than instead send this guy and ruin the dancing part of the reception. We had Timothy Quinlan as our DJ at our wedding on June 23rd. Booking with Tim was the best wedding day decision we had! Tim was able to figure out complicated logistics and everything ran extremely smooth. The venue we booked had three separate rooms (one for cocktail hour, one for the reception, and one for dancing). Tim was able to figure out how to play music well in each of those spaces without visible cords running from room to room and without charging us extra. The speeches and music were clear throughout the entire night in each of the spaces. When it comes to music played, Tim killed it! We had some odd requirements that included playing Salsa and Merengue music intermixed with popular American hits. We also had Brazilian dancers come for about 20 minutes an hour into dancing. Tim took the extra step to communicate with the dancing company directly to make sure everything would run smoothly. The rest of the music played was amazing! Tim was able to incorporate my husband's Cuban culture flawlessly into the playlist. The dance floor was full the ENTIRE time. At the end of the night, about 90% of the guests were still dancing. I NEVER expected for that many guests to still be there at midnight. This was the best decision I made when planning my wedding, and Tim is the reason why I have had so many positive responses from guests! She was easy and fun to work with from the beginning, indulging my picky tastes (sorry...) and gently suggesting I give her a bit more wiggle room. I did just that and she 100% delivered. We gave her a little direction on the different vibes for cocktail hour, dinner, then dancing and she ran with it. The dance floor was a solid 3 hour hour party and I had 4 people ask if we were friends, as we chatted a little throughout the night and I was psyched for each new song that came on. Jenna also helped us develop a timeframe for the evening's events (toasts, etc.) so that everything flowed very smoothly.
