For a place called "Toast," they are sure resistant to any breakfast-related foods. Wouldn't even fry me an egg for my BLT as if the kitchen doesn't even have eggs on hand. Of course they do but for some reason, asking for an egg on my sandwich was a cardinal sin. May I also add, as someone who has worked in food and beverage, I was surprised that I got a hard "no" as if asking for an egg is the equivalent to ordering a well-done steak at a high-end restaurant. My wife and I slipped over to Toast on a Tuesday night around 8:00pm. It was our wedding anniversary and we thought we would go split a dessert while our child was at a sports practice. I like the look and atmosphere of Toast. Half coffee shop, half bar and restaurant. Really laid back. We sat ourselves and were promptly waited on. Our order consisted of a glass of ice water, a cup of decaf coffee, and big piece of chocolate cake ala mode'. We saw that they served "UNL Dairy Store Ice Cream", yum! The waitress returned shortly with a half cup of coffee stating "this is what they had left but they were brewing a fresh pot." I took a drink: cold. Yuck. Disgusting. After a short wait, my hot cup of coffee arrived and a huge piece of chocolate cake. I didnt count but it had to be 10 layers or more, but there was a problem. Our chocolate cake ala mode' was sans ala mode'. I have to say the fresh coffee tasted great, and the cake tasted great, though I'm suspect if it's made in house. It seemed a like a pre-made dessert that I lot of restaurants buy from wholesalers. Positives: They did get the ice water correct and I had fantastic company. One of my favorite places in Lincoln to eat. Located in North Lincoln, the decor and vibe at Toast is excellent. So many good things to say! Recently expanded, they offer great food at great times and a full bar. Everything from their pulled pork, to their tuna, to their burgers, is excellent. My personal favorite is the peanut butter and blue cheese burger. Sound weird, but is the best burger I have ever had. Service is always up to speed. Multiple different sides to choose from, along with coffee or tea. Drinks come in mason jars. Their dessert choices include a variety of cupcakes from Serendipity Cupcakes and different flavors of icecream from UNL's Dairy Store. read more

Very good food. The only thing is servers use a device to take orders and to collect the bill. Came while we were still eating to collect. That should not happen until they have cleared the plates. Takes awhile to enter everyone's credit card.....I would rather see the devices on the table like chilies, Olive Garden, Red Robbin,etc. That is the only complaint, everything else perfect. read more

Been to Toast a couple times now and have only ordered the veggie Thai Burger. I absolutely love this sandwich! Wish it came with a few more fries though. The Rain martini is a very tasty cucumber/basil/pepper cocktail that is a total surprise to the taste buds. The atmosphere makes me feel like I'm not in Lincoln..almost. My only complaint is that they don't seat you there, or really even acknowledge you there when you walk in. The last time I was there was with a group of 6 and an employee said to wait and snag a table. Now first come first serve basis is fine but the place was busy and packed on this Sunday morning. Toast really needs some sort of seating service..at least during busy times. It seemed strange having to wait with my grandmother to somewhat race for a table that wasn't even cleaned off. read more

I've been here twice and I'm sure I'll return. This is pretty good for the price. The entrees are creative and tasty. The only complaint I would have is that they don't serve a "traditional" breakfast (you know, sausage, eggs, etc.) but I did have the soft breakfast tacos and they were very good. Our family has eaten at this restaurant a couple of times, but recently I went in to place an order to go on a Saturday night. They wouldn't let me. They had customers waiting because all the tables were full. I said ok, I'll wait also if I have to, but they wouldn't allow it! Here's the thing - they had open seats at the bar because everyone else was in a group. I can't believe they would turn away a customer because they wanted their order to go in a box instead of on a plate. It was a total waste of my time. This restaurant is in an poor location and I won't make it a destination again because the service is poor. If the food was better it might be worth it but you can find better and more food options downtown. read more

This is in my opinion one of the best places to eat in Lincoln. Today I shared the Virginian and the Reuben with a friend. Virginian is a grilled turkey sandwich with green chilies. Nice complex flavor. Their Reuben is probably the second best Rueben I've eaten. Had a side of cinnamon role chili. It taste like there is a cinnamon roll in the chili - Amazing. I've been to Toast numerous times, including several prior to their expansion, which was definitely needed. Food is good, service usually good-even when very busy. Portions and prices are good value. Finding a table is sometimes tough-a seating system might be good. My biggest complaint is the noise level. Even when not busy, busy it's noisy. Impossible to carry on a normal conversation when really busy. All it would take is a number of well placed acoustical panels hung from the ceiling (paint them to match the ceiling or match the walls to be decorative). Would make a world of difference. read more

Great new place to eat! We went for lunch and although it took a little while to get our order taken because they were short handed on staff it was worth the wait. The fried pickles and green beans were amazing and the main course was delish! It seems like they have old favorties with a little spin to make them new and fresh. I also can't believe they had dite mt. dew on tap! Then for desert we had the raspberry french toast. It's an OK place to eat, not a great place. They never did bring my salad that I ordered, and it took them about 5 to 10 minutes to bring me a clean steak-knife because they'd apparently run out. The apple pie dessert could've been really good but they serve it cold, not warm, and who doesn't give the option of apple pie à la mode... that was a bit strange. Came here for an early lunch on Friday. The place seemed to fill up quickly around noon, but there is plenty of seating in addition to a bar area. I got the school house club on a French baguette with all of the toppings and fries which were both amazing. It will be my go-to place in north Lincoln when guests come to visit. read more

I live fairly close so I've been here quite a few times. I'm a big fan of the tuna melt. My usual "tuna sandwich" opinion is a waste of a restaurant visit. Not here. I also really like the tomato bisque and the potato salad. I've yet to have a sandwich that wasn't yummy. Although most of them I've had are a bit messy - not that it's a bad thing. I've had the salmon quesadilla - not the greatest. Good flavor, but soggy tortilla. Weekend mornings they have raspberry cream cheese stuffed french toast with maple bourbon sauce. Oh goodness is that tasty. (And only $4 - no sides, just the french toast, but still a great deal.) The wait staff could be a little better. There seem to be a lot of regular patrons and the staff can sometimes be more focused on socializing with them than attending to the other guests. On the other hand, they're very friendly so I can overlook it. read more

I found out about Toast because my son worked there. He was actually named in a newspaper writeup because of his great customer service. He stopped working there but I still wanted one of their excellent Ruebens and fried green beans. Food was good still but the manager was soooo rude and unprofessional that I felt bad for her staff. I've been there several times, and it's really hit or miss with this place for me. 1st Depending on the wait staff working, you either have a very attentive, friendly person, or one that would rather be on their phone or talking about how much drama is in their life?! 2nd The food is either really good, or sub par overpriced bar food. For example, I have had the steak stroganoff a couple different times. The 1st time, it was incredible with perfectly cooked rib eye on top. The last time, the noodles were tasty, but the steak was flat iron and tough with not much flavor. bleh! 3rd one of the owners is notoriously rude to customers as you will read in other reviews. I thought the 1st time, she was just in a horrible mood. Found out, this is the way she acts all the time..at least the times I have been there when she is there giving you the stink eye! WTH? Here's why 3 stars. The atmosphere, location, and décor is beautiful! Yeah, I'll be back, but they need to seriously work on things to improve the experience or they will lose me and many others! The food was average. Ours was cool when it was finally served. This isn't a place to bring kids. The Mac and Cheese is penne style, so it had to be cut before a kid can eat. I had the Islander which was described as having a spicy sriracha sauce...it was a very mild fish sandwich. The service was the worst part...we sat with empty plates for at least 15 minutes. When she finally came around we asked for a to go box and dessert menus. Next time we saw her...well we just asked for the check and the to go box again. read more

A consistent and delicious choice. Salads, pasta, burgers and sandwiches all seem to be good options. The staff is very friendly and seems to have your best interest in mind as displayed in their quick and friendly service. I did have a steak that left some to be desired at the end of last summer, but have not had a bad experience since. Toast seems to have a steady flow of customers each night and I believe they hold multiple regular visitors.
