Decent place to drop by for a quick bite. Very close from the Q, N, R, W, B, D, F, M trains in Herald Square and not too far away from the 1, 2, 3, A, C, E trains at 34th Street - Penn Station. Might look small from the storefront downstairs, but there's actually a huge, bright, spacious, and clean seating area upstairs. Has so many tables and 72 seats in total so you're bound to find somewhere to sit down. Music isn't playing too loudly in the background. Has a really good variety of food options as the to-go buffet and it's calculated at $13.99 per pound. Lots of alcoholic & non-alcoholic beverages to choose from as well to quench your thirst. Food tastes good but is quite pricey in my opinion. There's a restroom code at the bottom of your receipt. Restrooms are found in the back of the seating area upstairs. It's funny how NYC is the city that "never sleeps" yet there we were, in the midst of empty streets and Toast being our only nearby option. My friend and I visited Toast Cafe Brasserie while enduring an overnight bus layover in Manhattan and this was the closest spot available after 12 AM. We simply wanted a cozy spot to sit, eat, and grab something while waiting to board our bus to Boston. We thought we'd put our heavy luggage upstairs and then come downstairs to order food afterward. Almost immediately, the person behind the counter on the left side started screaming at us (literally roars), demanding that we buy something before heading up DESPITE telling him we'll be back down to get food. Seriously, dude, take it down a notch! We were practically brandishing our wallets, ready to spend. But before that, I probably would need my hands free to physically take out cash from my wallet. There was no need for a Broadway-level performance when store policies could have been communicated professionally. Thankfully, the elderly Korean gentleman behind the opposite counter stepped in to calm the situation and let us through. Honestly, he probably felt bad for us. Kudos to him for restoring a semblance of sanity. However, the entire ordeal left us rattled and reconsidering our choices. In other words, we were scared shitless. Once we got upstairs, the scene turned even more surreal. The whole place was roaring with music from a group of drunkies. One particularly enthusiastic man, with red bloodshot eyes, staggered up to us with obvious intent and insisted on shaking our hands. Because that's exactly what you want when you're tired after lugging around heavy bags: a drunk stranger's germs. We did indeed got to try their food and purchased a takeout box, which is priced by the pound. Food was greasy and barely passable - nothing noteworthy. Toast is a nice one stop shop for a quick meal or a even a coffee on the go. This place is like your local convenience store but on steroids. Within this little market is a hot table, a deli, a coffee shop and a small grocery section. You'd be surprised by the variety of food they have in the self served hot table. I saw a mix of salads, Chinese dishes and Italian dishes that day. There's also soup, chips and a variety of canned and bottled beverages. I tried the sandwich at the Deli that day. They offer a variety of sandwiches with unique New York themed names. For example I ordered the Babe Ruth which is just a Reuben sandwich. For a $10 sandwich it wasn't bad. The loaded it with a healthy amount of meat. I would say for a quick pick up it was well put together with a nice meat and slaw ratio. This store is a refreshing change of pace to going out every night. They basically have a huge "to go" buffet. You scoop what you want and pay by the pound. Huge selection of drinks and desserts as well. They also have a grill to make burgers, chicken sandwiches and various paninis. My wife and I loved being able to walk in, pick what we want and take our food back to our hit room for more romantic food times. We enjoyed this little find a great deal. I don't think I can put the love I have for the sandwich makers at Toast into words. The hot sandwiches are beyond delicious and made so well. Very worth the price too. I've tried the chicken parm, the spicy parm, and the maximum (spelling might be wrong) sandwich and all of them are really great. Once I tried the sushi and that was a pretty big mistake (reason for four stars). That I won't get again but the sandwiches are always fantastic. Check your receipt!! What scammers. Bought 2 Haribo gummy packs. I paid with card and got a quick look at the receipt. Scammer cashier here deliberately rung up 4 Haribo gummies instead of the 2. $3.50 each so overcharged $7. He put it as two line items to fool me. When I brought it to his attention he tried to give me $4 in cash back. When I told him to look at the receipt and that they were $3.50 each he acted upset and then dished out $7. I am updating my earlier review of TOAST. My previous experience was tainted by an overall bad trip to NYC. Since then I have been back many times and I always go to TOAST. I LOVE their buffet. At first I would only go for dinner or a late night meal - all were great. Then I was up early one morning and went to their Breakfast buffet. OMG!! Scrambled eggs, pancakes, french toast, sausage ham, many types of home fries. All served fresh and hot. I love breakfast and filled my box up. After being weighed it was $24 which was less than I would have paid at a diner for breakfast. Many complain about the staff and I find them really good. They are the same as pretty much anywhere in NYC. Treat them well and you will get the same back. And if you can tell they struggle with English - give them a break. I find it so easy to come here for dinner. The food is delicious and well prepared. And you don't have to leave a tip so you save there. The upstairs where you go to eat is big, clean and you will be surrounded by a lot of locals. I love this. TOAST is one of my favorite things about NYC. read more

Worst customer service and that's by NYC standard. If you enjoy being yelled at by a curly hair man with attitude, then this is the place for you. WE ARE NEVER GOING BACK. We live close by and have been going to juiciology for a while now. Recently it was closed so we tried Toast. The first time we were here, everything was fine. Service was a bit slow. Second time, the guy manning the bagel section (dark curly hair, average height, skinny) was THE WORST. He yelled at an elderly couple to SPEAK UP several times when they simply couldn't - he never moved close to them so he could hear. Then he came over to the acai section, took my acai bowl and yelled at someone else. When I asked him about why he felt the need to touch what I had paid for, he tried to make it about the fact that I had an issue w his hands. And started yelling at me. To whomever owns this place, your store is clean and the food looks delish, but WHO you hire is going to determine your success. This guy needs to be fired bc you cannot yell at the customer. Manhattan Hot Buffet by the pound is really a scam. Unfortunately, this location falls under the same rule. I came in to get a hot snack and a drink. It literally cost me $18 for 5 pieces of very dry sesame chicken and dry lomein that clearly had been sitting out for a long time and tasted a little sour with no clear idea of why since there were no pickled veggies in it and a beverage. The minimum charge per lb is $12. When I went upstairs to eat the food got cold before I sat. There were a lot of seedy people up there that were clearly intoxicated and staring at me as I went to my table. Needless to say, it got weird for a girl to be up there. So much so that I left before I intended to. For $18 you can go anywhere in that area and get a full meal for the same or less. I've seen a lot of hot bars in that neighborhood shut down because of this very issue and would rather not see that happen in this case but make it safe for patrons to be there and reinvent that hot bar space. It's a HUGE hot bar altogether. And if it's not making the money and you leave that good out all day that's not healthy. Look in to "too good to go" the app. So that you can sell it for less and not have a ton of food leftover. Or even donate what's left to feed the homeless there in Herald Square. There have to be solutions to the hot bar without making it so expensive that people don't want to eat it. read more

This is a fantastic little place that has become my go-to stop on the way from the train to work. They have a wide array of options for...everything..including off the shelf caffeinated stuff (iced teas, bottled/canned coffee, my new favorite Phocus caffeinated sparking water, etc.) that is very reasonably priced compared to similar spots in the area. In the morning, they put out a nice looking hot bar with fresh pastries/muffins, make great smoothies to order, and your standard bagels/breakfast sandos, etc. Most importantly, the staff are friendly and efficient and never let long lines build up in the morning.
