I travel 20 miles to this place when there is cigar bar 3 miles from where I live. Let's just say it's worth the ride. Best Selection in cigars, beer, wine and liquor. Here's why I'm giving them 3 stars: Because I don't have an opionion yet. I stopped by The Tobacco Merchant last week to a) look for a particular cigar and, b) get suggestions for some pipe tobacco. The problem was a) they were trying to deplete the stores to avoid having a big payment on the floor tax that was imposed and, b) the shop was changing ownership and they didn't want to restock until after they closed on the deal. So while the clerk was very friendly and talkative, the low stock made it hard to get a feel for the shop itself. read more

This is probably my favorite cigar bar. I drive down w the fellas for a day of relaxation and it is always a good time. The cigar bar is always organized and neat. Ventilation is great when smoking and there is a great lounge area with a television. The bar area has 2 large TVs and there several craft beer selections. Staff is always friendly and well versed on cigars and beer. Can't wait for our next trip. The only issue is the sticks are a little overpriced but it's still a great place. read more

Excellent cigar bar with a high end selection of sticks. Unfortunately nothing hard behind the bar. I'm not sure if that's a SC thing or what, but I would frequent this place more often if they had some Ardbeg or Glengoolie Blue to enjoy. The air in the bar is exactly as you would expect from a cigar bar, full of cigar smoke. I usually start a Friday night at the British Bulldog and then walk here for a smoke. Parking can be annoying on weekends, so be prepared to walk. read more

Excellent stock of high end cigars, but this place is in DESPERATE need of a better filtration system. The air was thick like cotton. Also, I was appalled that a staff member brought a lit cigar into the humidor. Might as well have put a urinal in there. The humidor should be pristine and smoke free. If they're asking $20+ for a cigar, it should be protected from avoidable contaminants. read more

I've dropped in here a few times to pick up some Nat Sherman's (seems the only place I can find them in Columbia). This past Monday, my beloved and I came in to try the beer and check out the vibe, rather than just an "in and out." Beyond the tobacco counter, there is a bar with a weathered and comfortable feel. The selection of beers met our different palates. We explored and found a room with leather seating. I enjoyed the "art" with cigar bands and cigar boxes. My grandfather smoked cigars and his father worked for Have-A-Tampa out of Tampa, FL; so, suffice it to say, I felt right at home in the smoky atmosphere. IF you have breathing problems and your eyes burn around smoke, there is an outdoor patio. We did check that out and enjoyed talking to more regular patrons about their jobs, different types of cigars, places to visit in the area (we moved here about 3 years ago, so are still "new"), and the weather (because, um, hurricane). We'll be back. It's between work and home, so it's the perfect place to stop off for some company, a nice craft brew on draft, and a fancy smoke. read more

A lot has changed at The Tobacco Merchant since an ownership change in mid 2009. The huge walk-in humidor is very well stocked. Additionally, Columbia area B&Ms (brick and mortars) have caught on with the rest of the world and developed bars and lounge areas to enjoy cigars. While I don't generally purchase cigars at retail shops, I try my best to support their bottom line whenever I'm in the mood and would enjoy a change of scenery. Staff are generally very knowledgeable, and will recommend cigars based on quality, not necessarily those that have the largest price tag. read more

This is a phenomenal cigar store, and now that they've added a full bar, it's the best place in Irmo/Columbia. Greer and the rest of the guys are extremely knowledgeable and very friendly. They have a new owner, but the staff has remained the same. You are never made to feel stupid for asking a question, and any suggestion they've ever made, I've ended up loving. Any time I've gone to buy a full box, they've also thrown in a discount because they recognize the value of repeat customers. They also remember my name, which goes a long way. read more
