I can't say enough good things about Dr. Mayer and his staff. First and foremost, you should know that his team has specialists to work with insurance companies to ensure that your surgery gets covered properly. If you're worried about getting your insurance company to do what they're supposed to do, his team will handle that for you and they're great at it! I love his staff. They're wonderful people and I always felt welcome and cared for. They're very considerate, patient, and empathetic. As for Dr. Mayer himself, I was initially reticent to choose him due to his age, but once I saw his results and spoke to him personally, all concerns went away. While he's a busy man and can seem like he's moving very quickly with preliminary consultations, you need to remember that he's been doing this for over 40 years; I promise, once you get to the actual appointments, he's patient and takes his time. His custom, proprietary hair surgery method is a borderline miracle, and his style of facial feminization is what I wanted: natural-looking. I didn't want to be artificially made "hotter," I wanted to look like "me," and he did exactly that. I know that he technically doesn't do a couple of specific forms of facial feminization that I've seen discussed on Reddit, but unless you're getting extremely deep into the research yourself and very particular about what you're looking for, you can't argue with his results. I booked and paid $300 for a consultation, but never ended up consulting with him because, after more research, I discovered he doesn't do the particular procedure I was looking for. When I called to clarify, the staff gave me a call back in a timely manner with the right answer and let me know he doesn't do it. I canceled my consultation and they offered to refund my consultation fee. I got orbital rim contouring, face lift, chin reduction and hairline lowering. I have worked with many surgeons and Mayer is one of the best ones. The staff is even better. They keep up with you the entire recovering process and even after. Francis can be a little strict but thats because is very important to follow the recovering guideline in order for you to get the best results. I am 8 months post op and I love the results. I have learned from this process that it takes time to see the results. Everybody is different some take longer than others. In my case It took like 3 months to start seeing the results. I spent years researching and finally decided to do an inperson consult with Dr. Mayer. So glad i chose him. I'm so thankful for Dr. Mayer and the entire staff! I consulted with many other surgeons and all but Dr. Mayer left me feeling like they weren't listening to my needs and were more concerned with how much that they could cram into my FFS (trying to convince me that I needed jaw contouring and chin work, etc.). A few showed me "after" virtualized pics and all would have had me looking like one of those exaggerated Brat Dolls!!! One even wouldn't shut up about his 3D printer, lol. Like, please. I have a 3D printer. Not impressive. Dr. Mayer was a breath of fresh air. Based on the recommendation/results of a few acquaintances, I booked both a consult and procedure with Dr. Mayer. Needless to say, the procedure has been life changing and has left me forever grateful. To start, Dr. Mayer's crew (Davina, Francis & Keely) are an absolute joy to work with. They were all extremely caring and very communicative all the way through the process. After the distant consultation (literally... it was skype and I'm out of state), and upon meeting Dr. Mayer, he was immediately disarming and took care to address any questions that I had heading into the procedure. For the procedure itself, I can't envision another surgeon that I'd've felt more comfortable/confident in for it (it's a bit of an odd procedure which I opted to stay conscious for). Finally - the after care has been nothing sort of amazing. The office took time to reach out to me over the weekend and address some unease I was having, and the final post-op visit went well. In late 2015 I underwent 11 facial feminization procedures plus voice feminization surgery with Dr. Toby Mayer at a total cost of $56,000. At the time I was 42 years old and had been on HRT for 1 year. The purpose of undergoing these procedures was to: 1. Resolve facial dysphoria 2. Facilitate societal integration and acceptance as a female 3. Mitigate potential marginalization and stigma associated with being transgender I was only willing to entrust FFS to a surgeon with proven track record of consistent quality outcomes as verified by actual patient interviews. Initial research on potential surgeons revealed a significant variance in surgical skill and patient outcomes. Surprisingly, many the most well-known FFS providers produced what I observed to be unsatisfactory results - botched procedures, visible scaring, disproportionate appearances and even disfigurement. In researching Dr. Mayer, I found he had 4 decades of FFS experience and is a pioneer in the field. His philosophy and approach to FFS was in alignment to the results I wanted to achieve and from patient interviews it was clear he produced consistently superior, high quality surgical outcomes. None of his work looks natural and he really should retire. Possibly had many lawsuit to pay for, but I can tell you he's not good. Please see someone younger and more skilled. You'll thank me later. I have lots of regret seeing this "plastic surgeon", but a part of me wonders why I didn't consult with other Doctors. I felt that he had a few good reviews and thought his experience was worth it - boy, was I young and naive. All of the 1 star reviews are probably true, because I can validate most of them with my own experience. I went in for my hairline lowering... during the consult they encouraged me to get my eyes lifted with the forehead for a more youthful appearance - I thought that sounded good, but they never said it would be a drastic change. I was 25!!!! Who in their right mind would encourage this? Francis the nurse said she wanted it done one day... After the hairline lowering procedure, I didn't recognize myself anymore. The hairline looked awful and my eyes were so stretched and swollen. After 3 months and several emails to the office and visits (no actual resolution), my eyelids were slightly uneven and my brows were super high. My hairline had a terrible scar and I could not pull my hair back. I still have the scars and the muscle above my left brow is large and gives the appearance of a bump over my brow bone. I went in several times to discuss the issues and how to correct them - they were all trying to manipulate me into believing it was "normal" and "this is fine, no one will notice". What?! Admit you did a poor job and offer to correct it. Now, I have no eyelid fold/crease. People often do comment on my "big eyes" now as they are not pulled open. I have the eye hollows and it makes me look much older. I feel like a victim and still paying off the debts! I am however, looking for Doctors to reverse his work and revert to my natural looking eyes. read more

Even tho it was difficult to save everything up I don't have any regrets whatsoever and dr Mayers staff understood my position and gave me the time I needed to pay. I really appreciated it. My experience with the entire staff was absolutely fantastic. Like anyone else, I did a lot of research before deciding on my Facial Feminization surgery. Dr. Mayer was well reviewed across every forum, blog, web page, everything. My decision to go with Dr. Mayer was a no-brainer. Everything started with the consultation. Dr. Mayer was forthcoming and made some wonderful recommendations. He spoke in plain English and did not try and wow me with any medical mumbo jumbo; just straightforward recommendations. With the outstanding guidance of Sharon Clawson, the patient is give all costs up front and can schedule right away. There was never any pressure to schedule anything on the day of the consultation; just straight talk and the guidelines on how to schedule. Once the surgery date and procedures are scheduled, patients are guided through the process. Sharon sends everything the patient needs such as blood work and X-rays needed. Everything was done electronically. Sharon is always there to answer any question at any time! Just call her up and ask away. If you are coming from out of town, my recommendation would be the Hampton Inn on Vine Street in Hollywood. A brand new hotel, the Hampton is just five miles down the road (although it may take 60 minutes to travel down Santa Monica Blvd); but you are close enough to the office per the guidelines. Also, the Hampton is within walking distance to food and shopping. There are various grocery stores and Trader Joe's to get food. With Instacart app, you never have to leave your room! The day prior to surgery, you will have a pre-op visit with Dr. Mayer and meet your nursing team. I also got a phone call from the anesthesiologist! Frances was my nurse and she is super nice and very talented. The pre-op is why you should get to L.A./B.H. a couple of days early, to get settled in and load up the room with food and supplies. If you are having facial feminization, bring clothes with buttons!! You risk tearing out the stitches pulling things over your head. This includes pajamas. On surgery day, everything happens fast, and the next thing you know, it will be time to wake up. You will be required to have someone pick you up or spend a day with Serenity, the $1K (yes, thousand) per night kind of a hospice with nurses. My recommendation is to find someone to spend at least three days with you to help with everything; I was lucky to have a friend volunteer for this. Remember, try and have the friend or family member with you for at least three days, at least to keep you company and help sort out all of the meds. Since my flap I have done hair Styles that I never could do before. I recently had another rhinoplasty making this my second. I like it but I still think a third would give me my desired look. However I look amazing and younger everyday. I can wear almost any hairstyle I never wear makeup and everyone tells me I look like I have it on but I'm jus naturally pretty. If you are looking for a dramatic ages dive surgeon he is not for you. He focuses on a natural feminine look and I think that is best because nobody want to get dressed up just to be pretty. I've been, on a long, difficult, and scary road, to a third rhinoplasty. Terrified of making a bad decision, choosing the wrong surgeon, etc. I'm sure, anyone, who is, or has been, on that same road will relate. So I'll spare, detailing my fears, and get straight, or straighter, to the point. I had surgery this past Wednesday, it was my second revision and my third rhinoplasty. Choosing a surgeon, the right surgeon, was important. Over the past five years, I had consults, with doctors, all over the country. Ultimately, I chose Dr Toby Mayer. I am so incredibly glad I did, seriously, best decision. EVER. I can't praise this dude enough. Although I am early on, in my recovery, will update this review, in the upcoming year, I think it important to begin now. If simply In the hope, it will be helpful, to anyone else, deciding on a surgeon. That said, I'll share my experience, both with the surgery and surgeon. I had a Skype consult with Dr Mayer, which was new to me. I didn't know how to use it, (read - I'm technologically challenged), and couldn't figure out how to turn on my microphone. Dr Mayer was pretty cool, about the time I was wasting, trying to figure it out. My ability, to verbalize, what I disliked about my nose, was challenging. Bless him, for figuring it out, and his patience, helping me do so, as well. I've read that this doctor isn't very personable. I didn't find that, to be the case. I don't think it important, regardless. He is a great surgeon. So decision made, I made the trip, and brings us to now. Revision completed along with a lip lift. First off I CAN BREATHE AGAIN. Like mouth closed, both nostrils, day of surgery, already able to totally breathe. Its glorious. Today, I had my cast removed. It's amazing. I have been so unhappy for so long. I can look into a mirror without ruining my day. I'm still swollen, although less than I had expected, and it looks really good. I'm excited, to see myself, looking back at me, once again. Then when it was my turn to talk he literally only let me ask one question about a procedure. This man is rude and only cares about the money look for someone else. Dr Mayer is more than just an accomplished surgeon, he is also an artist, delivering natural but most effective and pleasing results. He has a trained eye to give your face the balanced esthetics it needs, taking into account your own individual characteristics. That is why I went back to him for a second time, even if I had to fly in all the way from Europe. I had a facelift and forehead lift done with fillers and chin reduction in combination with some micrografts. I was yet again surprised immediately after surgery how good I felt considering. If Dr Mayer evaluates while performing surgery that there is a better approach to give you better results, he will do it without compromising your wishes. That is when you know you are in good hands. I had mentoplasty (chin reduction) and, a rhinoplasty revision done by Toby. I also brought along a friend from the UK who wanted a more sculpted neck, (she had a bit of thickness in the area). We thought it would be great to have each other's support. Steer clear of Toby Mayer and his assistant Francis (who people believe is actually guiding him as he does the surgeries). His license to practice should be revoked as he is too old to be performing surgeries that impact a person's life. My nose looks like a mini-potato. My chin has what are referred to as "dog ears", something much like drops of skin, one on each side, and my chin looks worse than when I went in for a reduction. He convinced my friend that she needed an eye lift as well as hair grafting to lower her hairline. In good faith, and because of my recommendation, she agreed. She was left with a chunk of hair missing in the back of her head because it became so matted during the surgery. When I challenged him about it his response was verbatim: "Shit happens." Shocking. They tried everything, but ultimately had to cut out the matted hair, and offered to pay to replace it with extensions. She had no choice and agreed. So my experience with Dr. Mayer could not have gone better. The staff was very welcoming and helpful at all times. This was not a short process for me. It was two years from when I first contacted the Dr until my surgery date. The staff would checking in on me as I made my financial arrangements to see if I was ready. When go time came Dr. Mayer was very willing to do a second Skype interview to see what my weight loss and the magic of HRT had done. I traveled from Alaska to see the Dr. his staff was very helpful in providing hotels close by they also listed which ones had a medical rate to help me save on that expense. My in-person meeting the day before my surgery I found Dr. Mayer to be friendly and engaging. I am not by any means wealthy, Dr. Mayer took this into consideration and figured out what I needed done most to improve my feminine appearance. I had hairline lowering, brow shave, brow lift, cheek lift, nose, and chin re-sculpture. In my consult i shared with the Dr that there things you go to people because they are very good at and you are not. At some point you will have the best outcome if you let them do what you asked of them. In this case I asked Dr Mayer to feminize my face. He has been doing this longer then pretty much everyone, I liked his more natural outcomes. I did not want to look like a cat, as I have seen in other Dr's work. My recovery went well and I was back at work in less then two weeks, my scaring had been minimal and healed quickly. Dr Mayer did complete FFS with Flap procedure all at once. It has changed my life and gave me back what I had taken as a child. He made me look like I was supposed to from birth. It takes time to heal and continues to be better everyday. He doesn't just set you up for say brow lift without taking you into a wholistic view and makes certain all parts fit as they were supposed to have been. If you expect to look like some movie star etc. then you need to ask yourself what is reality based on your genetics and but for the testosterone would you look like someone else. My wonderful experience with Dr. Toby Mayer, MD. Beverly Hills, CA I would most sincerely like to thank Dr. Toby Mayer for his impressive surgical skills which are nothing short of spectacular. I am now 7 weeks post-Op from my initial procedures and the results of his work are amazing. Upon my first initial visit to see him, Dr. Mayer introduced himself and we had a wonderful open discussion regarding the possible feminization procedures and my personal goals. During our discussion, he expressed an immediate recognition of the issues I had been concerned about, including the appearance of scaring and stretching resulting from a previously performed Rhinoplasty years earlier. After performing a careful examination, Dr. Mayer thoroughly explained and showed me in the mirror and with pictures the procedures he proposed which included; (a revised Rhinoplasty) to raise and smooth out the tip of my nose, the addition of cartilage grafts to improve the appearance of my nasal openings, and then the removal of a deviated septum which plagued my breathing through both sides equally. Next was a (sub nasal lip lift) to improve both the volume of my upper lips appearance and to provide a feminine symmetry between my nose and upper lip. Following that, the next procedure proposed was to add fat as needed to correctly fill out and improve the appearance of my lower lip. For me, this procedure is requiring a two step process to remove the existence of adhesions below my lip in order to finally fill my lower lip in evenly. In addition to the above procedures, we discussed my desire for (Submalar) getting cheek implants to improve their overall profile appearance, and then he addressed my concerns regarding the loose skin below my chin area. Dr. Mayer explained his process and then proposed a(Facelift) to included my neck and soft Tissue Nasal/Labial Folds and expressed the benefits toward meeting my overall appearance goals. Dr. Mayer impressively took the time needed to address all of my initial concerns and questions, and I felt extremely comforted with his charm and professionalism of my needs. I decided to proceed with his proposed procedures and scheduled my surgery with Sharon, who was herself also extremely pleasant, friendly and always available to address any questions I had. Since my surgery, I have had many checkups with both Dr. Mayer and Francis, who is his acting Nurse and Surgical Assistant. Francis is extremely professional and knowledgeable of her profession and one of the most helpful, caring, kindest and friendly persons you could ever hope to meet. The aftercare I have received has been amazing and extraordinary impressive as well! From day one after my surgery, I have received checking up on calls from both Dr. Mayer himself and Francis, just to see how I was doing and additional follow up return calls to answer any concerns and/or questions I might have regarding expectations and properly taking care of myself during my recovery period. Dr. Mayer has provided me with a refreshed outlook regarding my overall appearance and I am overwhelmed with happiness of the totally natural and remarkable new looking features reflected back at me when I look in the mirror as well. After breaking through Dr. Mayer's straight forward professional exterior regarding his critical and precise visions of your initial needs, he has an amazing wit, Wonderful smile, keen since of humor and an awesome kindness toward his patients that is unmatched. This was/is the most unpleasant consultation with a Dr. I have ever experienced. Dr. Mayer is condescending, rude, dismissive and up-selling. I went there with a clear idea of what I wanted and as I tried to ask questions, he shushed me (several times) and said, "let me speak." I felt uncomfortable and knew that I could never let someone like this operate on me, let alone administer injections. I do not trust his judgement, did not like his brusque personality and frankly, was unimpressed by his work (which by the way were 20 year old pictures of his work. When I asked to see current pictures of his work, he gave me a curt, "well the technique is still the same." That may be so Dr. but are your hands? Trust between a Dr. and patient is critical and I felt really marginalized. read more

Dr.Mayer is a fantastic and amazing plastic surgeon that has genuinely changed my life for the better. My surgery has made me feel more confident when I look in the mirror, snap a quick picture or in any of my daily interactions. I had a Brow Lift, Forehead Contouring and Hairline reduction Surgeries by Dr. Mayer back in March of 2017. Dr. Mayer did a wonderful job. I feel so much more confident about my looks, I look younger and I've gotten various compliments from my friends. While I wanted to consult with a number of other surgeons for my facial feminization, Dr. Toby Mayer was the first surgeon to see me. After our consult I felt confident he was the best possible option. His portfolio spoke for itself and his attitude and demeanor was professional, to the point and inspired confidence. The staff at Dr. Mayer's office were excellent and walked me through all aspects of the surgery and scheduling. They were thorough and helpful and at no point I found myself uncomfortable or overwhelmed with any of it. The surgery went without any trouble and recovery was fast and with no complications. Even after two weeks post-surgery I was back at work and able to go out and be functional. The results as of 6 months have been great! I cannot thank Dr. Mayer and the team enough. I can look at myself in the mirror and not feel dissociated by my own reflection. I don't foresee the need for any sort of revision as everything went exactly as I had hoped. read more

I had a skype appointment with Dr Mayer. Even though he can not help me with my botched surgery he was not rude as some say he is. He was not overly friendly but tried to refer me to someone who he thought may be able to help me. If you are wondering whether or not to give him a shot I would as he has many years of experience. I have been a patient of this doctor off and on for about 15 years. I have also been a patient of many, many other doctors during my lifetime, and I would definitely place Doctor Mayer in the top 5%. I should note that I am not a person who stands in awe of doctors, and as a matter of fact, I am probably overly critical of physicians. Anyway, Dr. Mayer strikes me as a very smart doctor and also a doctor who really truly cares about his patients, and who gets a lot of satisfaction out of helping people. He also strikes me as somewhat of a perfectionist, which of course would work to the patient's benefit. However, one ramification of his being a perfectionist ( in my opinion) is that it is a good idea for a patient to kind of prepare in advance for whatever questions you were going to ask this doctor. That is, I get the impression that he is not really fond of just having a free wheeling, lengthy "bull session" regarding whatever is going to be accomplished with the surgery. But if you go in there with questions and concerns somewhat "thought out" before you talk to him, he is more than willing to sit there until the cows come home and discuss your treatment plans with you. BTW, I am an attorney and like any good narcissistic attorney I did a lot of research on doctors before I ever went to him, and his reputation as far as surgical skill was and is very, very high. Summarizing, I consider myself somewhat of a student of human nature, and Dr. Mayer strikes me as a person who really and truly gets great satisfaction out of helping people. I had facial feminization surgery two months ago with Dr. Mayer, and couldn't be more pleased. His quality of work was outstanding and price more than reasonable. I had my hairline lowered, orbital boney contour, lip lift with lower fat augment and chin contour. I was very happy with his aesthetics, and his incision and stitch work is incredible; my chin and lip lift incisions were invisible within a couple of weeks, and my scalp incision was barely noticeable within a month. During my consultation he was well mannered and knowledgeable, and he never tried to upsell me on procedures and in fact recommended against a couple I was curious about. I honestly got the feeling he was interested more in my optimal results and not his bottom line, which is reassuring. I also found Francis(the nurse) and Sharon(office manager) to be very kind and thoughtful, and they and the rest of his staff did the utmost to make my procedures and recovery period go smoothly. I also found his office and surgical facilities to be first rate. My experience with Dr. Mayer and staff was so positive that I am considering future procedures with them, and feel more than comfortable recommending them to anyone else including friends and family. read more

This is a update prior to my original review one year ago. After Dr Toby Mayor and his staff seen my review posted on yelp, they have not reached out to me since then to schedule consultations to see how my healing process has been. THEY WERE suppose to get in contact with me throughout the year every few months up to a YEAR but have NOT. They only reached out to me the one time I posted my original review to tell me they were disappointed in my review and how my review wasn't truthful. This just goes to show him, and his staff are only smiles in front of you when you pay for a procedure, but can careless about you once they take your hard earned money. And by the way, the symptoms they told me I was having post op.. which was a raspy voice and tightness in my throat, they said it was normal and will go away. WELL I STILL get a RASPY VOICE and tightness in my throat!! And whenever I do, it impairs my ability to speak and most of the time it's a daily thing. I am lucky if I go a day or two without that feeling in my throat. I lost my job because I was unable to speak/communicate with customers for short periods at a time on a daily basis. I have not reached out to the doctor about this since the first time I did because they said it would take a FULL YEAR for me to heal. I knew something didn't sound right when they told me that. Well guess what!? It's been a FULL YEAR and I still have those complications for my surgery! This doctor should have is licensed revoked. Please do your research before choosing a surgeon and always go to multiple consultations with different doctors to get different opinions not just one doctor!! Don't make the same mistake I did.
