Tasty food, amazing staff - A definite go-to, hidden little gem. We were visiting Hamilton this past weekend, looking for a knife-and-fork type take-out. We've had many similar meals at other establishments, so we were expecting average tasting food. Pleasantly surprised at how good it was. We ordered fish & chips, fries, The Ringer burger, and The Canadian burger. The wait time was short, although being late Saturday afternoon, there weren't that many in-restaurant customers at the time. The dude that took our order and prepared our large take-out bags was genuinely friendly, accommodating, and efficient. 100% we will eat here again and I would definitely recommend. read more

The menu has all the classic menu items with my favourite the truck stop burger with the chunky fries and cheese sauce on the side. Gravy had the most important thing FLAVOUR, I eat at a few places around here and the gravy usually disappoints but not here at Toby's . Cole slaw was fresh and crisp ,tartar sauce tasty and yummy , in short a perfect meal ! 27.38$ coffee included and extra tartar sauce and gravy . Well worth it ! Kathy my server was fantastic,always made sure my coffee was full and that if I needed anything I got it quickly,another key part of a dining experience. I went to grab a bite to eat before work. Not 5 minutes after I sat down and ordered my food, a mouse ran across the floor, not 3 feet from me. I also noticed the kitchen area was definitely not clean. Please save your money and go somewhere else. PS. I called public health about this matter. First impressions: - Kind of a bar by night and breakfast by morning feel. - It's in Jackson Square, so the only parking is outside and down the road. Which was $3 for the whole day on Saturday and Sunday. Other option is within Jackson Square which is a lot more money. - Custom "Early Bird" Breakfast, which you are able to choose bacon, sausage, or ham, an then how you like your eggs cooked. - If it's busy then it does take a while from ordering to getting to your table. - Bathrooms are a bit of a hike. Overall for $4 a person it isn't a bad breakfast. Stick to coffee as a glass of orange juice will run you $2 a glass. A little steep in my opinion. Good way to start your weekend off if you plan on parking and shopping for the day. read more

Very budget friendly and great food with a decent atmosphere. My girlfriend and I have recently became regulars, probably coming 5 times in the past month or so and would've liked to give a 5 star rating before this negative experience. Every server we've gotten before has been absolutely amazing until today. The experience started when our server, Kathy gave us two breakfast menus and a single lunch menu during lunchtime so when she came to get drink orders I handed her the breakfast menus and asked if she could remove them, she then said "oh" in an annoyed tone and took them away. We asked for another minute for the food and she left us sitting there for 10-15 minutes or so which usually is never the case. The issues arrised when the drinks came and in my girlfriends water there was some sort of food mush floating at the top, while I can't expect glasses to be perfectly clean given that its a diner at a lower price point I still do fully expect not to be ingesting something with old crumbs of food in them and so we brought up the issue. Our server sounded a bit irritated and said "okay you want a new one then?" and replaced it after looking fairly annoyed. When the new one was brought we quickly noticed the same issue (a crumb at the bottom of the glass) and politely brought it up for the second time, this time the response was confusion like it's not something you should want a replacement for and she reluctantly asked "so you want a replacement again?" sighed then walked off. You would expect the issue to be removed but almost immediately after we got the new glass it had another small red object floating at the top and the bottom was very dirty, at this point we just gave up and tried to hastily finish. We quickly finished our food which was average this time around and she brought the machine. Once we put in the no tip option as the service felt very disappointing and rushed we immediately heard a loud sigh and got a disappointmented expression, then we struggled with the machine and heard two more sighs of disappointment within the next minute or so. I really would've liked to give a higher rating but just judging off this experience they lost a good review and new regular customers most likely and we will definitely be more reluctant to visit. read more

This place was a godsend! After having spent $15 (plus tax and tip) for tea, 2 eggs, 2 strips of bacon, potatoes and toast at the Sheraton restaurant the previous day, I dragged my friends here. As we walked up, we noticed the sign advertising $2.99 breakfast. We knew we were in the right place! Yep - not even 3 buck for eggs, bacon, potatoes and toast. And everything was tasty, service was quick - what else can you really ask for? (I didn't have the coffee though - I'm too picky and figured I probably wouldn't like it.) However, the following day far too many fellow festival-goers had discovered it, and my friends went to find the one poor waiter overwhelmed. If it's not crowded, though, this is the place to go for a good cheap breakfast! read more

Bleh. Crappy, bottom of the barrel diner food. I had the breakfast 'special', $3.99 for 3 eggs, toast, ham/saus/bacon, and potatoes, and it was greasy and perfunctory. The waitress was overworked and did no more than bring the food, only offering to refill my coffee after bringing me my check. Ambiance was fine for a family eatery. Crappy breakfast. We had the greatest experience with our waiter! He was funny, jovial, and welcoming! I can't remember the last time I've smiled so much while eating lunch! I think I'm definitely going to try and come back up from Scarborough and plan a lunch with my sister and my partner again when we get the chance! Rubbery greasy eggs, over buttered toast, funny tasting bacon, eek! I won't come back here. I asked for poached eggs, reply: "He doesn't do poached eggs" :( Boiled: "He doesn't do boiled either" :( What kind of breakfast place won't boil an egg!?!?!?! I mean, come on!!! Went there yesterday & it was horrible!!! The food was disgusting and the amount of food you get for 6.99 is no worth it at all.. My eggs were cold and my home fries weren't cooked all the way! Both of the servers there were SOOO rude it took 15 mins just for them to come get our drink order with attitude... Never will go there again! I visited Toby's for the first time today. The atmosphere looked friendly and quiet. I was told to seat myself. My friend and I were then greeted by an overly friendly server. Though we found him nice and helpful with the menu. Our server (lady) looked too busy with only 1 other table in the whole restaurant. We ordered with this lady. She seemed to be fine. When I got my food I was disappointed. The steak was tasteless. The home fries were cold. While my friends fries were hot, she even burned her tongue on them. I did not complain about this. As we were eating, the server yelled at us from several tables away to ask if we were "fine". I found this rude. We hurried to get out of this place as the server was clearly distracted and rude. When paying, my friend got half of her change back. She asked. The server explained to her that she was wrong. The server left. My friend and I looked over the bill. The server owed us $5. It was extremely disappointing that the server was adamant to believe that she was right. We didn't want to argue. So we were about to leave. She rushed to the door and handed my friend two toonies. Still short a dollar. We left the restaurant immediately. I have never come across such poor service and o.k. food to go with. I will never return to this restaurant again. Nor will I refer it to any of my friends. I do not wish to make them go through what I did. read more
