I had a very easy experience getting an on-site quote. I received 3 quotes for this job. 2 quotes, including this one, came in around $7100. I went with a third one at around $6700 (which included an additional mixing valve) and am very happy with my decision. Overall price was not a big part of my decision, but brand of water heater was. After doing some research online, the most recommended brands are AO Smith and Rheem (GE). Both higher quotes were for Navien, which has only been making heat pump water heaters for 1 year, but I was told that it is the most reliable brand. I did not understand how this claim could be made, given how short the duration of evaluation for this product. Even the worst appliances usually work for at least a year. So I requested a quote for AO Smith or Rheem, which I did not get. I'm not sure why my brand request was not honored, but it made me question whether I should go with a company that either has communication issues or maybe some type of deal with Navien that I was not informed about. Many water heater installers are preferred installers of certain brands, which means they can get better pricing, etc. I did not want to be a guinea pig for Navien.

Wilson came out, took one look, and figured out the big leak was actually on the city side of the meter, between the curb stop and the meter. Not my line at all. He tightened a valve on the spot and cut the leak from about 1,000 gallons a day down to a trickle, then told me to call EBMUD since it was their responsibility to fix. He didn't charge me a cent for the visit. After EBMUD swapped their valve, there was still a small leak. Wilson suggested it might just be a toilet flapper. He was right. I found a running toilet and fixed it myself in five minutes. The meter stopped. So instead of a $3,850 line replacement I didn't need, the real problem was a city valve and a toilet flapper. Honest, knowledgeable, and no upsell. These are the people I'm calling from now on.
