We stopped by Todd Jurich's Bistro recently to get a drink before our show and the experience was fantastic. Rob the bartender is always quick with a joke (and a lite of your smoke, just kidding that's from a Billy Joel song, everyone knows there's no smoking in restaurants and thank goodness for that!) but he always makes us feel special every time we go there. They have a fantastic Happy Hour menu but unfortunately we had dinner elsewhere (and I'm still wondering why, but I digress again) we couldn't eat there but rest assured we will be back... read more

Pretty disappointing experience! Arrived ahead of reservation to have a drink at the bar. The bartender, scooted in from behind us to place a bunch of dirty glasses on the bar from a high top behind us. Ultimately, the drinks were ok and the bartender was busy but friendly. Our server for dinner, Wilson, was very inexperienced and lacked professionalism. He struggled to open our wine, and was clearly fearful of holding his tray. He, nor anyone else ever checked on us throughout the dining experience. The little things, like runners bringing courses and not knowing who gets what, literally barking, who gets the poke bowl was off putting. The steaks came out very undercooked and lukewarm and the mashed potatoes were cold. The sides were also cold and the truffle fries were tiny little pieces from the bottom of a bag. Such a nice restaurant but needs a lot of work. read more

Winterfest Norfolk has a whole new meaning we probably picked the coldest day to go to Winterfest. After freezing to enjoy the beautiful Christmas lights of Wjnterfest we decided to find somewhere to grab dinner. When I searched and the search stated Todd Jurich's Bistro 450ft they were the winner!! Little did we know they would really be the WINNER!!! First thing I did was called to confirm they were open, and check to see if we needed a reservation. Dana was very pleasant and so nice on the phone she stated we could come right over and that we did!! FYI we were parked in the parking garage right next to the restaurant, but we did notice they offer valet parking should you want door to door service. Once we entered Dana greeted us just as pleasant as she was on the phone. We were seated immediately. The restaurant is beautiful I will tell you we were dressed for the Winterfest event which we knew would be very cold, so we did feel a little under dressed for the restaurant. Our waiter was informative it took him a minute to warm up to us. But once he did he was very nice answering my questions he even suggested after our meal that we should come back soon for a visit to their bar. We started our meal with the bread basket we opted for the popovers and the baguette. I definitely recommend the popovers. They were so soft and they were cooked to perfection as well. The baguette was good too, but I would really just do a whole basket of popovers only because it's not something that you can typically find anywhere else. I ordered the French Onion soup to try to warm up the soup was good a little salty to me. Honestly I have had better from a chain restaurant, so in the future I would probably pass on the soup. My friend ordered the pumpkin clam chowder she enjoys a good clam chowder she said this chowder was okay but very heavy with pumpkin. She stated she would pass on the chowder next time as well. Honestly I had to come back and edit my review after I uploaded the photos because I forgot about the soup and chowder. That says a lot. The menu has a great selection. I typically order filet, but for some reason the meatloaf sounded so appealing to me that I had to try it. I've never in my life ordered meatloaf from any restaurant ever, so I was was a little hesitant, but I thought to myself if a nice restaurant like this has it on their menu it's got to be amazing. It was definitely worth trying it really lived up to what the waiter described! Cooked to perfection came with mashed potatoes and carrots and it had gravy /sauce on it. I almost feel it. It's a disrespect to call it a gravy that's how good it was. I would rather label it as a Demi glaze. My friend ordered the scallops over risotto and she said her dish was so good. The scallops were perfectly cooked and she really enjoyed the risotto. We skipped dessert because we had had s'mores and hot chocolate at Winterfest, which also gives us a reason to come back so that we can try something else on the menu and also get dessert. I would definitely recommend we will definitely be going back. I would also say it would probably be best to make a reservation on the weekend. Just not my type of place based on the overwhelming culture/ethnic specific clientele. It's Just a fact. Bar food was also pretty greasy and left me feeling weird. On the other hand the bartender was very friendly and attentive. I tried it but it's highly unlikely I would go back. If I could give this place zero stars, I would. This was my first time visiting, and I was looking forward to it. The atmosphere was nice and the crowd seemed good. We came with a few friends, but the service was a huge disappointment. My husband ordered a Sidecar, and what the bartender brought back was nowhere close. When we tried to address it, she brushed us off and said the manager would "take care of us moving forward." We then waited over 20 minutes before the manager finally came over. When asked, my husband again ordered a Sidecar. The manager explained that they make it with brandy, sweet and sour mix, and a splash of lime--which is not at all how a proper Sidecar is made. We politely explained the correct ingredients, and while the manager was friendly, the lack of basic cocktail knowledge was shocking. On top of that, the first server was flat-out rude and never even bothered to alert the manager--we had to stop him ourselves just to get another drink. For a place that prides itself on atmosphere, the service and lack of professionalism behind the bar completely ruined the experience. Fortunately Rob, the manager was extremely friendly and made the rest of the evening fun. Based on that, I will give the place another try. read more

Todd Jurich's Bistro has been on my list of places to try in downtown Norfolk for years now. It just hasn't worked out - the few times I was going to go something came up or plans changed. Finally, when we had plans to attend a candlelight concert at the nearby Granby theater, this was the date night spot we chose for dinner. We arrived at around 6:30pm without a reservation on a Thursday night but were easily and immediately seated at a night quiet table in the back by the friendly hostess who continued to check on us throughout the night and make sure we were doing OK which was a nice touch. Our waitress was excellent. Polished and professional and never left us wanting. She was easily able to answer questions on the menu and make suggestions when we were between items. I chose the pumpkin crab soup as a starter and it was delicious. I also chose the scallops for my entree and enjoyed them. The portion was nice. My husband went with a fish and chips of the day and his was a smaller order of one piece of first, you can choose one or two. The one piece was huge and it was fresh, flaky and perfectly cooked. Delicious! To close the meal we had coffee and the Chocolate Pot de Creme, one of my favorite desserts. This was an excellent, creamy and decadent version of it. Very very good. Hubs helped me eat about half of it and he's not the biggest on dessert. Parking is super easy in the city garage around the corner or one of the other nearby garages. They don't validate but the parking is cheap and for 2 hours will cost around $3. You can also valet but the line was very long when we pulled up so we self-parked and walked the 5 minutes. All in all, great meal, great service and we will return for another date night soon! read more

I had dinner last night with a friend. It's been awhile since I've dined here, and I was excited to go back during Restaurant Week! We had a reservation for 2 at 7:30, but when we arrived, our table was not ready. We sat in the bar for close to an hour, but it was OK! Our hostess acknowledged our wait, apologized, and offered a complimentary cocktail. That was such a great gesture and really changed the tone of our evening. We started off with cocktails. I had the margarita which was decent. For a starter, I had the pumpkin and crab soup, which was delicious! It was a generous portion of crab meat that complemented the soup base very well. For an entree, I selected the jumbo flounder, served with spinach and lump crab. It was a winner for a seafood lover like myself. For dessert, I had the bread pudding, which was very tasty. It was slightly dry at the bottom, but the top had a great texture. 4 STARS! We did wait an hour for a reserved table. Also, their menu had supplemental charges, which is something I've never seen during restaurant week. Although they did provide a fair number of offerings at the stated price. I met some customers here for a work dinner in a private room that sat about 20 people. There is some outdoor seating, a bar area, the main restaurant and I noticed another side room that looked good for groups. The atmosphere was dressy and the servers were dressed well and very pleasant. There is an extension wine list. The food was absolutely fantastic. There's not many restaurants that I can say are just really great but this had so many great options. We started with apps and I had delicious perogies with caramelized onions. I sampled crispy calamari with a mango coconut dipping sauce. The breading was light. There were several salads ordered for apps which were full size dinner salads. Definitely not skimping there. Personally, I had crispy duck cooked medium with farro and cherries. I prefer my farro a little more cooked but it was all delicious. The sweetness really went with the duck and it was tender but crispy on the outside. Several people had steaks, I saw a giant pork chop over Mac and cheese, scallops over a grain, and fish with crab topping which some said was a little salty. We also had several desserts including chocolate mouse which had chocolate shavings in a fluffy mousse. There was a key lime pie type ice cream and a bread pudding. The bathrooms were clean. The restaurant had a great atmosphere. This is a great place for meetings, groups or date night. I'm looking forward to another visit. read more

I've been to Todd Jurich's Bistro on a couple of occasions for happy hour sips and bites, and I have not had a bad time during those visits. Since I pretty much have dined and sipped in the bar area, my comments about service only reflects that. I will say that Rob, one of the bartenders, is a barrel of laughs and definitely will keep you and your party entertained throughout your visit. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the restaurant has happy hour everyday, including weekends. *Well, I think they are closed on Sundays.* The happy bites are pretty good and well-priced for the quantity. My personal favorite is the Pittsburgh Pierogis (and the calamari). I will be honest and admit that I'm not sure what makes Pittsburgh Pirogies different from ... I don't know a Polish pierogi. Overall, the ambiance of the restaurant is pretty nice. I think it's a great place for a first date, catching up with some friends, and hanging out alone. Be aware, that the bar area can get pretty packed during happy hour, there might be a bit of a wait for a table or a spot at the bar (since it's first come, first served). read more

4 of us enjoyed a great meal here last night. The service by John was impeccable and the food was enjoyed by all. The calamari were fried perfectly and were crunchy and flavorful. Two of us had the crispy cherry duck, which was very good but aside from 2 cherries there wasn't much cherry to the fish, though it was well executed. The Halibut and the scallop entrees were excellent also. I'd recommend this establishment both for great food and service. read more

The service and the ambiance are superior with a positive vibe. The waitress we had, Kayla was absolutely fantastic. We ordered the pork chop, filet minion, truffle fries, and a half dozen of raw oysters. The oysters were terrific and they were from the eastern shore. The truffle fries were crispy and absolutely tasty. I requested my filet to be cooked medium, however it was way under so they try to recook but unfortunately over cooked it. It was flavorful, however just too under for my liking. They would have cooked me another one however I declined. The restaurant took my full meal off the bill and even provided desert because they were truly sorry. This was above and beyond because I chose to eat the sides and would have paid for them but they said it was okay. Came here for my partners birthday, and they decorated the table for him. I loved the fact that they already had a table set and reserved for us when we arrived. The inside of the restaurant is nice, and there is a cool view of the USS Wisconsin at Nauticus. Our dinner was delicious and our drinks were tasty. My partner and his parents were obsessed with their mashed potatoes. The reason I am giving 4 stars instead of 5 is because they didn't have a printed copy of the whiskey or bourbon they have on hand. Our waiter had to go take a picture of what they have using his phone. I understand this is a wine spot, but having a hard copy list of dark liquors offered is always a good idea. read more

I rarely write bad reviews. I would instead usually never go again. I went to Todd Jurich's after making a reservation on Open Table for a party of 5. The restaurant is nice-looking and somewhat upscale. The wait staff was friendly and nice. We were seated, and everything started off as a typical restaurant experience. We arrived at 5:30 and told the waiter we had to leave by 7:15 to make our show later that night. First, we ordered drinks and appetizers. Drinks came, appetizers never came. We thought we had lost track of time catching up with old friends and didn't realize how long it had been. It had been 1 hour since we ordered. Finally, one appetizer of oysters arrived. They were decent and served with vinegar and a cocktail sauce that looked like straight ketchup. We asked the waiter if the food was coming. They said they would go check. Then, it felt like the wait staff actively avoided our table. Other tables around us were getting seated after us and served their food. Finally, the manager came around to say they were short-staffed, and someone had called out at the last minute. At this point, it had been an hour and a half since we sat down, and we really needed to leave. Had this been communicated to us way earlier, we could have chosen to leave or asked them to cancel our orders. Our other appetizers were canceled. They hurried our dinners, and we had to eat quickly to be able to leave. The food was obviously rushed and mediocre. We had crab cakes, a steak, a salmon dish, scallops, and fish and chips. I would have preferred not to be served mediocre, rushed dishes and just not eaten at all. We were all sadly leaving unsatisfied and in a hurry to leave. The management was apologetic, but this really boils down to a lack of management of the restaurant. I understand that things happen, people call out, and sometimes you are short-staffed. If that happens, you don't seat as many tables! I was really looking forward to coming here as it has been a part of Norfolk for a long time and has a great reputation. I came to this bistro with a group of friends for a night out. The decor and ambiance is very elegant and we had a table near the entrance. Our server's name was John and he was very professional and friendly. He even took our picture at the end of the night. When it comes to the food, it fell short of our expectations. The consensus was that the flavor profiles of the dishes were lacking a bit. The dishes were cooked well, but teetering on being too bland. Also, the portions were on the smaller side and took a long time to come out. I believe we were sitting for about 90 minutes by the time they arrived. The truffle fries received rave reviews. In my opinion, the best item was the bread pudding so kudos to the pastry chef. All in all, not a bad option for a night out, but some work enhancing the flavors would make it more worth the price point. read more

We visited Norfolk to listen to the sounds of a live band featured at Townpoint Park last Friday and had plans to dine afterwards. To my surprise, the restaurant was within walking distance from the park and from our parking spot on the street. We arrived for our reservation a few minutes early. But without hesitation, we were seated right away. The restaurant is super cozy and low lit. The restaurant also features a happy hour and outdoor seating. However, we opted to dine inside and ordered from the main menu. We started out with cocktails and ordered appetizers. Lumpia and pumpkin crab soup. I loved my lumpia and my dear thoroughly enjoyed his soup. Now the main courses... crabcakes for me and meatloaf for my dear. Both meals were exceptional. We enjoyed it all, we decided to check out the dessert menu... we shared the bread pudding... delish! Our waitress was super polite and attentive throughout the evening. I don't know where to start, but right off the bat this was the absolute best dining experience I've had in Hampton roads. My dinner was so delicious I bought the kitchen a round of drinks. John was our server and was very attentive and made our meal very special. The inside of the restaurant is beautiful with high ceilings and large windows that over look nauticus across the street. The attention to detail in every single thing they brought out made the meal elevated to the next level. The oysters were clean and fresh, the bread was so insanely good and fresh out of the oven, the bar staff made the best dirty martini I've ever had. Run, do not walk to get a table at Todd's. We tried this place out the other day for restaurant week. I was originally impressed with the ambiance and the friendly service. Then, we received our cocktails. They tasted nothing like the description or ingredients. They tasted so strong I could hardly stomach it. Like straight vodka, and cheap vodka at that. I love a strong drink so I could t imagine someone who doesn't, drinking the drinks at all. Had to have my boyfriend drink my second one because it was like taking a straight shot. No thanks! The appetizers were good. I had the soft shell crab. They came out fast, so that's a plus. The main course, we had flounder and halibut. Both were bland, but the veggies were not too salty, which is sometimes the case at other restaurants. We took our desserts to go, and they both were very tasty. The mouse and the berries crème fraise. Our serve John, was extremely helpful. But the service alone will not make me want to come back. Unfortunately I don't really recommend this place unless you don't mind spending a decent amount of money on food that is quiet bland and mediocre. We were excited to go to TJ for Norfolk's restaurant week! They had 2 options for a 3 course meal. For starters, we had lumpia (Filipino egg rolls) and calamari steaks. Both dishes were delicious. For mains, we had meatloaf and the paella risotto - the meatloaf was super tender, the risotto could have been cooked a little longer (it was a little too al dente for me). Desserts were great, but the chocolate pecan pie was a little too sweet. Although quite busy with the folks taking advantage of restaurant week, our server was attentive and kept our glasses full. While we were a table of 8, our food took over 90 minutes to come out after placing our order. Not sure what had happened, but the waiter kept saying he would check on our food and that it was almost ready. When we did receive our food, my duck breast was cold, though cooked properly. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this restaurant when there are other options around Norfolk/VB. The manager did offer us free dessert for the trouble however. read more

I attended a private event and the service we received from the staff was awsome! I did valet parking and the two young men taking care of the cars were patient and worked hard to get everyone taken care of. Our servers were on point. We never had to wait for refills and food came out exactly how we ordered it. One of our guest was a vegetarian and they created a special dish just for her. Her plate looked better than what I ordered! The dishes I tried (calamari, Mahi, Caesar salad) were all good and so was the cocktails!! Calamari had a nice crispy texture and seasoned well. Mahi was grilled, I believe and it was still tender. Another guest wanted her steak well done with steak sauce so guess what waiter said.... For 1. The chef doesn't cook any steak well done For 2. Anyways, Todd Jurich's is a fancyish restaurant in Waterside. 3/5 stars requires a bland review so here we go Drinks were okay- nothing much to say besides it's a good strong. The lighting at the place was dark and it hides the imperfections of the dishes. I didn't think the pumpkin crab soup was worth the price and the flavor was in a bad end of the different spectrum. I got the oxtail pasta and it's lackluster. I preferred not grinding so that the juicy oxtail still remains, but it has gotten harder. Fancy dinner? sure. This is a very nice place. Pretty fancy and pricey. We came here for my mom funeral. I was very grateful because we asked a table VERY last minute and they accommodates 12+ people on a Friday night. The food was pretty delish. I truly enjoyed the pumpkin crab soup. The meat was tender and juicy. The place was full house and the mojito is a must try. Their Happy Hour special is one of the best, the drinks are made perfectly, and most of the food I've had has been great. Came here for a quick lunch date. The restaurant was quiet , we had the place to ourselves. Experiences like that are enjoyable. We started off with soft shell crab as an appetizer. Pretty good. We took the seafood route. There was a special that consisted of pan seared halibut with fresh crispy kale underneath. Very fresh. The poached lobster tail over zucchini linguini I believe looked delicious as well. Both entrees came with a salad. The salad was a bit dry but nothing to get all upset about. I ordered a glass of riesling which was good. Our server Gigi was cool. Sociable and polite. We must return for dessert one day. Thanks for the experience ! read more

Yikes. Maybe it was just because they couldn't keep up with restaurant week traffic, but my visit to Todd Jurich's Bistro was such a disappointment. First, a plus, parking is easy and right around the corner. They also offer valet for just $5. However even though the valet booth was out during my visit, I never saw anyone actually using or running valet. Parking was the only thing that was quick and easy about my dining experience. When I arrived there was a large line waiting to be seated. Thankfully, one of the parties was a large one (6), so once they were seated it thinned out. I should have seen it as a sign when the party of two in front of me opted to dine elsewhere. First awkward 5 minutes went by and some people started to leave, then it was 10 before a server came and told us that someone would be right with us. A few minutes later a different server swooped me as next in line and told me that the bar was the only thing available. I had hoped to sit in the bar area to be near the window, so that was no problem. When we turned the corner I saw a small two-top table hidden from view of the front doors. I asked to sit there so I could get some work done while waiting for my food. She said "oh no honey, we need to keep that table for the next party of two that comes in." Okay. That's fine... I guess. No one was seated there during my visit. She then asked what I would like to drink, I told her water with lemon. While she was getting my water I asked which of two options she would recommend. She brushed me off before I could finish the two dishes I was debating between and told me that they are all great, put my water (forgot the lemon) in front of me and then I never saw her again. Rough start. It was another 15 minutes before a different server came to take my order. I tried to order as quickly as possible while I had his attention. I have to say he was the best part of this visit. I didn't get great service from him, especially for being in a fine dining setting. I don't think that was his fault though. I watched this man WORK! He was generally pleasant, but naturally always rushed. Five stars for him, just because I could see he was a good server and he was one of the only servers checking the unattended host stand during most of my wait, he just had his hands full. Almost an hour after arriving at the restaurant I received my food. I got the curry lentil soup to start. It had a light spice to compliment, but not enough that it lingered and affected the taste of the rest of my meal- I enjoyed it. I guess they ran out of napkins, because it was served with a cut up menu instead of a napkin between the cup and the plate. I wouldn't have even noticed if it didn't have something between the dishes, but it was surprising in this upscale setting. My main course was the meatloaf with carrots and mashed potatoes. The portion size was bigger than I was expecting for lunch, but the salt level was overpowering. The temperature was also a bit off for me. I'm not going to say cold, that would be an exaggeration, but I'll go with "luke-warm." It was overall disappointing and not something I would order again due to the salt. I was planning to order their bread pudding to-go as an afternoon snack since I am a total sucker for dessert. By the time I finished and he was ready to bring me my check, I was just over the whole experience and ready to leave. I really just didn't find much redeeming about my experience to recommend TJB to my friends or to make me eager to return during a regular week and pay full price. Going for two stars instead of one hoping that a good part of my negative experience was due to restaurant week. Restaurant week or not, it wasn't a good first impression. I'll definitely give TJB another shot one day and hopefully have a glowing update to this disappointing experience. While visiting the area, we found this gem. Relaxing ambiance. My husband got the blackened halibut special and I got the chicken sandwich. They were cooked perfectly and tasted delicious. The service was great - fast and friendly. If I lived here, this would be a place I would frequent. read more

Sauce does not belong on a ribeye. Initially the dining experience I would describe is slow everything was very drawn out. After being there for an hour and a half we had just received a drinks only when I ask if we could place an appetizer the server responded with no let me get the drinks together. When I received my ribeye, it was cold along with everyone at my parties food, but everyone seem to enjoy their food despite it being cold, but my steak had a cream sauce on top that they described as butter and then let them know that butter should melt and her response was right, after letting the server know that I did not like the sauce, he ripped the plate out of my hand very rudely. no exaggeration I've never felt a little in my life. we were celebrating my cousins birthday and after this entire debacle over the ribeye we asked if she could have a birthday dessert and they said I'm sorry the kitchen is closed. After spending hundreds of dollars and they're establishment they did not recognize her birthday, even though she had a balloon bouquet with lit up balloons. Never asked if we were celebrating anything as well. I feel like this service was mediocre at best and in this time, and they people spend too much money to go out. Everyone wants a great experience. The manager was involved, and nothing happened besides the ribeye being taken off the menu, which I was OK with that considering the rest of the party did enjoy the food, even though the temperature was not up to par, I will not return, I'm really big on great service, and this was not it!!!!! read more

We've been to most of the top restaurants in the area and I'd have to say this one is up there with the best of them. You really can't go wrong, the food is delicious as well as the drinks. Also, one of only places in the area where you can find foie gras regularly on the menu. The staff is always professional and the restaurant has a nice atmosphere. Highly recommend. read more

Beet and goat cheese salad. It tasted good BUT there were like 5 slivers of beets and 2 slices of strawberries and the carrots just threw it off. It was very underwhelming The tuna poke appetizer -tuna was not fresh. It looked like it sat out for a while. My stomach was kind of messed up throughout the night. It was served with seaweed salad that's always good. Some other slaw salad-it was NOT good at all. The pumpkin and crab bisque was very good.
