We are in the Zinfandel club. Always good, sometimes great Zin and Primitivo. Todd is a very good wine maker. Prices are reasonable. Much of the juice comes from our favorite Amador wine country locales. The tasting room is in the Old Sugar Mill along with about a dozen other wineries. Very Askew Customer Service Metrics SITREP As part of a work-crew weekend excursion, the eight (8) of us headed down to Clarksburg because we heard there was some good wine-tasting to be had there. So this is where we found Todd Taylor Wines, inside the Old Sugar Mill complex in Clarksburg, CA. THE WINES In spite of above wine club ice-breaker - and a tasting-wait - there still were a couple reds that impressed me: * Props for their Blue House Primitivo, and at $30, was probably the most affordable wine of the group; * But I must say that I also enjoyed their Pinot Noir since it was not too tart, nor too sweet like other vintner's options I tried at Old Sugar Mill. Back to the snobbiness.... SPACE & PHYSICAL PLANT You can't get past the fact that "regular" wine-tasting is relegated to the smaller out-in-the-hallway counter, whereas the entire interior space inside their wine-room is dedicated to their "Wine Club"-members. [I also chew out both Heringer Estates and Elevation Ten on this same issue, but at least we weren't cast out into the hallway - those wineries at least had (crowded) interior counters we were still able to access more indepth tastings at with staff, and which is why they still garner 3-Star reviews in contrast here.] So to expand further on this issue, let's talk about this particular ill-thought out manisfestation of... WINE CLUB MEMBERSHIP Thus my sincere question at this point, "Hey guys, I'm merely passing thru town & thinking about buying some wine to take back home, but can I NOT be treated like a 2nd class wine-citizen just because I refuse to get sucked into an expensive year-long-wine-club-membership with monthly repeating charges on my credit card?" I GUESS NOT. So if stratification of the "classes" & "wine-snobbery" is your thing, then have at it: Todd Taylor - like Heringer Estates and Elevation Ten - are your dealio here. And as result, we'll be taking our visiting colleagues on treks to local breweries & distilleries instead, where they don't mind getting business from the "dirty unwashed masses.". LESSON: "Wine-Club-Snobbery" turns off MANY potential customers & it's a two-edged sword: (A) As mechanism for discounted bulk purchases & shipping, it's great; (B) But as an excuse to deny customers "access" - via their space-bifurcation of the taste room(s) between regular customers and their club-members - NO BUENO. THE LOWDOWN An OK wine-tasting experience could possibly be had here at Todd Taylor - just expect some wine-club bullshit that keeps you in the hallway, and NOT in the their main interior tasting-room. read more

Our corvette club did a run to the Old Sugar Mill in Clarksburg. We haven't been there in years and we were pleasantly surprised to see all the wonderful wineries. We choose to try Todd Taylor wines because they had a good reputation for high quality reds. We were greeted by a Todd himself who poured us samples and shared the stories about each varietal. Five stars alone just for the customer service here. Unpretentious, totally customer-focused and very easy to do "wine talk" with. I ended up chatting with the winemaker's wife. To me, Todd Taylor sums up the feel of what a "boutique" one-of-a-kind winery is like. For starters, there are no blends. And there are only reds. They feature single grape varieties from specific wine growers. From the tasting menu, the cab sav is the only one that is not locally grown - it comes from an area just north of the Paso Robles region. (I forgot the name!) The sangiovese was very drinkable - I am usually not a fan of sangiovese; however this one was smooth, balanced and not too fruity. But then, everyone's palate differs, right? The syrah (usually not available for tasting) had notes of pink grapefruit, something that I typically taste berry in. Very different! I can't say it was my favorite, but it would make a great bottle for syrah (or shiraz) fans for something a little off the beaten path. Their zinfandel is sourced from non-irrigated old vines, meaning the fruit is VERY concentrated. Wow. Thoroughly enjoyed my experience here - I think it's great that there is not a tasting fee which encourages people to try the wines. Unfortunately I had just spent my "wine allowance" on some old half barrels for landscaping. But I am definitely coming back with $$$ in hand and recommending this winery to others! read more

Last weekend I ventured out to the Old Sugar Mill in Sacramento and my first stop just happened to be the Todd Taylor Wines spot right inside the doors. Parking is always easy but the restrooms are always trashed (no reflection on this actual winery whatsoever, but on the management of the property). I was able to speak directly with Mr. Taylor himself who generously offered me knowledge (and an extra wine pour) regarding the history of the grapes and their various origins throughout the world. It was quite an interesting conversation and the wine was even better. The wine club is quite pricey but worth every penny. Love this place! read more

I'm not normally a fan of smooth, drinkable wines (I like big, acidic, puckery stuff), but Todd's wines pack a lot of flavor into a very easy to drink glass of wine. He explained to us that this is because he travels around the state, finding grapes that will make wines ready to drink now. It's nice to find wines that I can drink with my friends who aren't as into tannin and acid. These would make great picnic or backyard party sipping wines. We left with a bottle of the Syrah, and intentions of coming back once the Primitivo we tasted in the barrel is ready. read more

By far, the best wines at the Old Sugar Mill. The reds are powerful and complex. The folks pouring (usually Todd Taylor and his wife Gloria, but sometimes others) are knowledgeable and care about the wine. Once they realize that you also care about wine (if that does describe you) they will pour all kind of stuff for you that is not on the tasting list for the day, because they clearly love their wine and are a little more interested in the crowd that's not just there to get drunk for free. read more

This is one of the finest wineries my wife and I have found producing Napa and Amador wines outside of Napa. TTW produces outstanding value and quality in their wines. You can easily spend twice to 3 times more at big name Napa wineries and not get a better bottle of Cab. TTW's Cabs are produced from grapes grown in the Coombsville region (in Napa). I won't bore with the examples or drop the big names because that wouldn't be fair. Get in and check this joint out. If you're serious about reds, you will be impressed. read more

Every time my husband and I have an excuse to come do some wine tasting here, we're all over it. This is especially a big deal for me because I am a white wine person, and TT only does red wines. They MUST be good if I like 'em! My absolute favorites are the Sangiovese and the Primitivo. Oh my god, the Sangiovese is so good I could stick it right in my butt!! Kidding, kidding....my husband likes the Tempranillo and the Cabernet (too bitey for me). All of the wines are pure varietals (he doesn't do any blends) and every time I've been there, Todd and his wife Gloria have been behind the bar pouring and answering questions about the wine. Get them talking and you can learn a lot -- they're really into what they do and you can tell they enjoy their creations. read more

Love, love, love it. Todd's wines are clean, classy, bold and have great depth. Plus, they're priced very reasonably. We first got introduced to Todd Taylor Wines when we visited the Old Sugar Mill in Clarksburg. Todd runs the tasting room with his wife and son. He produces a variety of delicious red wines, including sangiovese, syrah, zinfandel and cabernet sauvignon. All his wines come from a single vinyard designation. I first experienced TT wines about a month ago. When I drank it, I mistakenly thought it was an inexpensive bottle of zinfandel that I had picked up at Costco, so I was very impressed. Turns out that I bought it at my local wine bar/shop -- Uncorked, and it was reasonably priced, but not cheap. Last weekend, to celebrate the youngest being all growed up and legal, the whole family headed to Sugar Mill to taste Todd Taylor's wines again. After sampling a few of the other wineries offerings, and being somewhat underwhelmed, I was ready to belly up to TT's tastings. I liked the zin, I liked the syrah, I liked the tempranillo, I like the cab, but I loved the primitivo. Todd himself was doling out some reserve from the barrel. I had a good experience with the people doing the wine tasting. I am partial to white wines. They only make reds. They were the first place I stopped as The Old Sugar Mill has 5 wineries. The hostess made sure to let me know they only had spicier reds and suggested that I go to the other places with whites and come back at the end. This was my last stop and I personally didn't like any of the wines they offered enough to buy any. They were too dry and spicy without being bold enough for me, but I can tell it is good wine and that it would be a great buy if that is your type of wine. read more

That was six months ago and things keep getting better and better. The wines are magnificent but that is just the beginning of the fun. Todd overflows with passion for wine. He gladly shares his tips-and-tricks of wine making against a backdrop of insider stories (e.g. the winery makes Syrah when Gloria Taylor's stash gets low). He also hosts great events. Yesterday was our first time to the Old Sugar Mill, and I am soooo glad we tried Todd Taylor Wines! They had four wines available for tasting, and they were all delicious! We ended up buying a delicious Tempranillo (it was described as "mouthwatering" on the tasting list, and that is exactly what it was!!) I can't wait to crack into it...then I'll have a reason to go back and buy more! The two Zins that were on the list were outstanding as well, but for all of the Zins we have from Amador County already, we decided to pass on those. Got a bottle of their Reserve Pinot Noir as a birthday gift from a friend. It's been hands down one of the finest California Pinos I have ever tasted. It is a little fruity but not too sweet, and has a great all around texture. Can be paired with literally anything but goes down a treat with some cheese and toasted nuts. My usual go to is the Sonoma Coast Flowers Pinot, which many would consider among the California classics but this one is right up there. Planning a trip out to this winery in spring and rediscovering the Old Sugar Mill. read more

I love wine tasting, and Todd Taylor was in my top 5 of best wineries to date. A friend and I stopped by the Sugarmill and went to TT first after reading the stellar yelp reviews. They do not lie! The Sugarmill was packed when we got there, but the tasting staff were attentive and informative, without being condescending. Even Todd (himself) talked with a bunch of patrons and humored us with questions he's probably answered a million times before. He makes single vintage/vineyard/varietal wines, and he does it damn well. Even on a budget, both my friend and I picked up a bottle (most are priced in the $30-$40 range). My wife and I moved to Elk Grove from Livermore two years ago now. We left an area with great wineries and loved the local vibe there. We found the Old Sugar Mill in search of a similar experience and ran into a couple that we loved right away. Todd Taylor's wines are amazing, first and foremost, but what we love just as much is that Todd, his wife & son are there almost every weekend and are the nicest people ever. We love it when we get a chance to get to know the winemakers themselves because you can get a real sense for the passion they have for what they do. This was my first trip to the Old Sugar Mill, but it certainly won't be my last -- since I committed the unthinkable today: I became a member of a wine club after so many years of wine tasting. This means I'll be back for a few events and bottles of wine throughout the year. Others have laundry lists of complaints; here's my list of accolades: * The winemaker and his wife Gloria were in the tasting room. * Todd is a purist; each wine corresponds to a separate vineyard. * He previously crafted beer... and his experience includes packaging!! * No port wines tempting me to buy more * All reds. I LOVE big noses, fruity tastes and low tannins (no bitterness). The sangiovese had me at first taste, then the primitivo seduced my palatte... only to have the 'Hearst' cab sauv simply SHOCK me. The last wine had a more earthy/less fruity flavor, uncharacteristic of cabs. At first, I doubted if this was a cab since the 'Lockwood' tastes more traditional. If you're a cab fan, these wines will force you to choose. Sure, you can like both -- but for very different reasons. Fact: the vineyards for each grew only 200 yds apart from one another. BTW the other wineries really make TT shine brighter... if you catch my drift. Also, prepared to be patient w/ the crowds -- it's worth the wait. read more

Oh, the Old Sugar Mill...what a beautiful building. The exposed brick and natural lighting give this place such a relaxed feel. What better place for wine tasting than this laid back little venue that's so close to Sacramento. It's home to 7 or 8 mom and pop wineries, and one of my favorites is Todd Taylor wines. While all their wines that I've tasted are luscious, some of my favorites include their Tempranillo, the Cab 2010 Reserve, and of course their oh so beautiful Cab Franc. Our first time at the sugar mill to try some wines and Todd Taylor was the last stop. Really glad we decided to try their wines, strong selection of reds with a decent amount of tannins. We were torn between the 2011 Zinfandel and 2014 Pinot as the favorite, ended up purchasing the 2011 ($20 price point difference). Todd himself was actually onsite and signed the bottle. Took a friend from out of town there to taste wines and pickup our shipment of wine on Labor Day weekend. My husband and I are MEMBERS there and have been for years. The owners and the servers know us so we feel like we are "friends". I was disappointed with the wine server on this particular day (Labor Day). Our "tastes" were just that - a taste... a pour of about 3 thimbles. I guess it's at their discretion on how much to pour for a taste - but it seemed rather chincy. Being long-time members and many times paying $90 for a bottle of their wine.... I just thought why can't they be just a little more generous!! WE ARE MEMBERS! After all, they probably dump out all their left over wine at the end of the weekend! Why SO chincy?? Left me with a bad taste in my mouth, lol. read more

If Yelp had six stars, I'd give 'em to Todd Taylor's wines. I love them all, particularly the cabernets. They are beefy, for the most part, and that's how I like them. Most will taste even better if you store them in a cool place on their sides for a couple of years. One of the things I like about Todd's wines is that the label tells you how long the wine will keep, which is a good thing if you've got a place to store the wine for awhile. If you're not into barrel-chested cabs, try the Tempranillo. It's fantastic! If you like Todd's wines, join the wine club. It's worth it for the quarterly club parties down at the Sugarmill. Todd usually cooks up something good, like pork tenderloin, with veggies and pasta, and of course lots of wine! read more

Wine snobs... go back to your Napa tasting rooms! I found Todd's all reds selection to be great. I'm intrigued that the wine maker focus is on single grape varietal rather than blending. This method gives you a true meaning on tasting the rain, sun, soil of that given grape.
