I was trying to eat at one of the local restaurants but alas I found out the hard way they weren't open since they were on vacation due to Labor day weekend. So my friend and I attempted to check out other local finds in the East Village. But sadly many shops weren't opening until noon, if not later, (what's up with that New York), and I had a plane to catch in Newark so was pressed for time. Tokio 7 was one of the few shops open and my friend suggested this place since she's had stuff on consignment. There was some cool stuff, but way out of my budget. Love the fact that they have great pieces for reasonable prices but I have to give this place 1 star because I don't have any tolerance for discrimination. I recently visited this store in search for a backpack for grad school and one of the workers was watching me to see if I was stealing! I went towards the back where I saw a Rag & Bone backpack for a really good price and I while I was trying on the bag, the same associate came over where I was while pretending to fix a rack of clothes. As soon as I walked away from the area, low and behold she walked back away from the area. I felt so hurt that I had to directly say something to her about it and she claimed she was looking for a shirt meanwhile another associate that overheard the conversation was apologizing. BS. Tokio 7 has cured my addiction to gilt.com and discount designer shopping online! I stumbled across this place on my weekend walk through the East Village and have fallen in love, unfortunately for my bank account. The store is small enough so as to not be overwhelming like a Century 21 and it only carries top designers. You might spend a bit more here than you would at your average vintage shop, but you will find some classic pieces at Tokio 7. I walked out with a pair of hardly-been-worn coach shoes ($80), Alice + Olivia black pants ($35), and a Juicy Couture cardigan ($50). I had to say no to some very cute DVF, Mint, and Vera Wang dresses all priced around $80-$120 each. But I will definitely be back... read more

This store has a very nice selection, it's not a small boutique like most in the area, it's very long and full of brand named stuff by Gucci and Versace that you can find at really good prices. When you walk in you expect to find any everything your looking for. But when i walked in nobody really greeted me. There shoe collection was sub par. They had a range of shoes size 10 and below and one or two shoes from 10.5 to 11.5. As i walked through the back it seemed like i was being followed by the people who worked there. It didn't feel nice at all. On top of that a shirt cost between $40-65. If your a serious buyer and want to drop some serious money this is the place for you. Quite possibly THE GREATEST STORE IN NYC!! my wife and I spend close to 2-3hrs trolling thru the fabulous collection of designer gear here every time we visit Manhattan. The service cops a beating in reviews but the grumpy old Japanese owner kind of adds to the vibe. The selection is extremely tasteful and the gently used items at mostly great prices, gives many of us a chance to own labels we could normally only dream of having. Dior shoes, LV and D&G shoes, marc Jacobs jackets/ suits, prada, anna sui, rag and bone, Galliano -- you find pieces from all these here. The quality is fantastic and it's fun just looking through the racks to see what you might discover. Some things are outrageous to think of wearing and others feel like they were meant to be in your wardrobe already! Long live Tokio 7 (and the new store is much better) read more

Stay away. I must agree with Evelyn A. & Sarah W. Terrible customer service! Customers do bring in nice pieces, but its not worth the grief with so may other excellent designer consignment shops in New York. It boggles the mind that a business which relies on customer consignment would have such a terrible attitude. I had been shopping and consigning here for a while and initially attributed the rudeness of the staff to a bad day. But how many bad days can you have and how long do you expect customers to put up bad service? On my last visit, the clerk was so nasty that I decided to bring my concern to Makoto (the owner). I thought he would want to know and that this was not indicative of his business. I was wrong. He and the clerk begin conversing in Japanese and gesturing as if I was not there. He then began making excuses for his staff's behavior saying they are very busy and have many appointments. I reminded him that without consignees he would have no business. He was dismissive and simply repeated how busy they were and that he want to hear complaints. I told him I did not want to do business with anyone who treated their customers so poorly. He was unmoved and just continued muttering in Japanese. So I asked that all my items be pulled from the racks and returned to me. They did so reluctantly only after saying that I would need an appointment to pick up my own items!? Once I retrieved everything I went straight to another consignment shop where they graciously took in my items and thanked me for my patronage with a smile. I've been coming to Tokio 7 for almost seven years now and have purchased a lot of amazing pieces during that time. The more well known the store becomes the more and more picked it over it gets, but that's to be expected and isn't really what this review is about. I've never written a yelp review, I've never really cared or felt the inclination but that changed today. Today I went to Tokio 7 and found three amazing, decently priced designer tees in perfect condition. One of the tees was marked down $12, score! right?! When I went up to the counter to pay, the older gentleman who works there (who I've always assumed is the owner) accused me of altering the price, of marking the one shirt down myself with a red sharpie. He went on to say I'd done this before! I was in total shock, kinda still am I tried to explain to him I wouldn't do that, that I was a loyal customer of nearly a decade, that I respected him and his store, that $12 wasn't really significant to me -- especially compared to the adjusted total of $165. He just kept going, asking me why I would change his prices, saying that I had previously done it. I was almost in tears and a line was starting to form behind me, everyone could hear. I just kept repeating I wouldn't do that, I wouldn't do that, that I would pay the full price, $12 didn't matter in the grand scheme of things. But he went on publicly shaming me, accusing me of habitually changing the prices. I emptied my pockets, my boyfriend emptied his pockets, in an effort to show him neither of us had any kind of red pen or marker on us. But it just didn't matter to him, he had it in his mind that I had done something wrong. I still bought the shirts, the best haul I've gotten at Tokio 7 in a few years, and now it might be my last. I've never done something like that in my life, and to be publicly shamed like that at one of my fave spots in the city was just kinda traumatizing. So I guess if you're going there, if you have brown hair and glasses, be warned: you might be mistaken for someone else and be accused of altering their prices. Yes it's a thrift store. I do not expect employees to roll out the red carpet and provide white glove services. What I expect from any reasonable service establishment is basic business etiquette, offering a "hello", "thanks", "goodbye", which this establishment did not provide. And what I witnessed at the store today unfortunately has convinced me from ever going back! It's like a bad relationship, you keep thinking the person has changed and you keep giving the other chances. But a scorpion will always be a scorpion and I have learned my lesson! I overheard an employee talking to another employee and calling a customer stupid in Japanese in front of her face! The employee probably assumed that the customer did not understand Japanese. What shocked me most was that the bad mouthing came from the owner himself. Buyers and Consigners be warned! The previous reviewers are right! Owner treats his customers with disrespect, so how do you think he will treat your consignment items, or anyone and anything for that matter? No matter how good the prices were today, I would not recommend this store, because I went in willing to spend but the negativity and condescending atmosphere drove me right out. read more

the actual review for tokio 7 does not start until about 3/4 through my post. sorry. it's the cold meds, i swear. that and i've got thoughts and feelings to share! during one summer break from nyc, i decided to go home to the sf bay area and leave my friend ellen to procure an apartment for us to live in during the next school year. INSTEAD, ellen got engaged to a guy she barely knew* and moved in with him leaving me and my friend, joy m, high and dry with nowhere to live during the first few weeks back in new york. we slept on friend's floors, we were kicked out of dorms for breaching security, we overstayed our welcome at about 10 different locations. it was too late to apply for student housing and besides, fuck that. we went to a broker who showed us some crapshaks on avenue d for like $2,200 a month. i was not down. and i HATED ellen. then, out of nowhere, an angel blessed us. her name was nina but i'll get to her in a second. we heard of an apartment in chelsea (yay!) that could be sublet for $1,800 a month (that was GOOD in nyc at the time) and so we signed our souls away and took the apartment. the guy who subletted to us was a kinda skeevy "I WILL OPENLY STARE AT YOUR BREASTS" weirdo but i thought nothing of it, this was a sweet deal! he said the woman who normally lived in the apartment is a famous model named nina (she had starred in ricky martin's, "livin' la vida loca" video. we all have different definitions of famous, okay?) but had unfortunately been in a terrible car accident and was now stuck in trauma at some hospital. it happened so suddenly that they did not have time to clean out her stuff so we would just have to work around it. uh, okay. meh, who cares...this place is AWESOME! so, a month passes during which time we get many strange phone calls ("yo, nina, baby, this is fabrizio, baby listen, you got to call a brother...you know what i'm sayin. hahaha. peace.") and a surprise visit in the middle of the night from a police swat unit who attempted to break down the door looking for drugs. ah, new york. one night, my breasts were having a conversation with skeevy landlord guy and they asked him what the deal with nina was. and he said, "oh yeah, i didn't tell you guys, nina wasn't really in a car accident, she actually ran off with her boyfriend to italy." uh, okay. so my breasts ask, "uh so when is she coming back?" he says, "no clue, do with her stuff what you will." ALL RIGHT! so first thing i did was try to squeeze my fat ass into her awesome costume national, versace, marc jacobs, etc. no dice. then my friends tried to squeeze their fat asses into all of her couture. when we came to realize that nina was a size double zero (yes. it is a size. mainly for eight year olds but also for female celebrities.), i collected her crap and took it right over to Tokio 7. I sold her shit for many a pretty penny and never looked back, bitches. ACTUAL REVIEW STARTS HERE: They have a great eye for quality and so did nina apparently because they took and sold every piece for a very fair price. The women working there were beyond friendly and lauded me for my (nina's) great taste. I also picked up a nice marc jacobs jacket with some of the money earned...hey, it was hard work lugging that crap to east 7th! The rest of the liquidation of Nina's apartment took place mainly by auctioning off her vibrator and underwear to guy friends. It's a shame i didn't know jack m. at the time...i could have made millions! I know, I know...it was kind-of a rotten thing to do. But she never came back! She was in LOVE! in Italy! *who one year later ended up cheating on her, charging a ton of porn on her credit card and then ditching her ass. read more

Beware of the owner! I wrote a negative post about my experience dealing with this store, in particular the owner. It must have been almost 4 years ago, and I haven't been back in Tokio 7 since. Today, I went there with a friend; she's in town from LA and wanted to hit some consignment stores. Despite her own bad experience dealing with these people while shopping there 2 weeks ago, she still wanted to go back and buy a jacket she loved and hadn't been able to buy during her first visit (they had refused to complete her transaction at her first visit because the store was closing for the day). We walked in, and the man immediately recognized me and said "You not supposed to come here! You said comment on line, say you never come here again, now you here! Unbelievable." He kept yelling at me about how I "posted comment you not come in here ever again" and told me to leave the store (!!!). I explained I was there with my friend, and was waiting for her. He said, "You want to shop you take down comment! You take down comment or you leave!" I said, "No, that was my experience here, I am NOT taking it down." He kept yelling at me that I was not allowed to shop there and had to leave. I laughed and said, no, I'm waiting for my friend. I suggested he call the police, and he walked away muttering. Mind you, all this happened in full sight/ hearing of a store full of customers! This man has PROBLEMS. Shoppers, be warned. read more

as a shopper - I would be lying to say I haven't totally found a few real scores... as a consigner - STEER CLEAR! I had mostly positive experiences with this store, unloading a lot of designer and vintage goods until I brought in one of my prized loads, mostly consisting of a vintage Chloe chevron, ombre patchwork beaver coat. A GEM. I returned a few months later to have my coat literally handed back to me in TATTERS. I had it for years, stored it well and never had any issues with cracking, tearing etc. I don't know who they loaned it to, whatever - but somehow in their hands, this beautiful and unique piece of vintage finery was absolutely destroyed. ok - mistakes happen. however, when I (understandably) was shocked to have this returned to me in such condition - Tokio 7 staff immediately went on the defensive (probably because they know they were at fault!) and told me my coat was fake Chloe because the tag was not pink like the other Chloe tags at the time (it is VINTAGE - labels change and they should know that Chloe has been around for decades, and all the fur origin, Made in France labels, etc were in the coat - not to mention the gorgeous details and craftsmanship etc on the velvet seams and lining...) and therefore it was my fault. HUH?!?! needless to say - a super disturbing experience. The girls working there that day were SO RUDE about the whole thing (even if it was fake - which it wasn't - they still should have apologized for giving it back to me torn to shreds, since it was in mint condition when it was left with them) The situation was handled so poorly by the Tokio 7 staff, that two separate customers who were in the store when this was going down approached me and said they were appalled by the way I was treated and they would no longer be shopping there as a result. So - sellers 'be warned'. This happened a number of years ago (while still in the basement location when they were supposedly 'better') and hopefully their management style has changed. Still burns me when I think of it though... and I just had a totally unrelated but also infuriating experience with a pair of Louboutins and a cobbler in Chicago, paired with a recent conversation about Tokio 7 - that has spurned me to sign up and mention this on Yelp. For the record, my general philosophy is not to complain about stuff and try to praise positive experiences as much as possible (because customers often only become vocal when they are upset as opposed to being vocal when there is a job well done - but so far my accolades have really just gone to supervisors as opposed to public forums) BUT that doesn't mean there are not some genuinely horrifying experiences that could be prevented from happening again. There was a lot of injustice in this exchange. Hope no one can match that story, and also hope that by my mentioning it, I can prevent distress for anyone else who might be considering selling something precious through this store. Also, seems like the stupidest thing to be saying now - but an important lesson: Take 'BEFORE' pictures before handing off any valuable item! read more

The people who give this place a bunch of stars are the same people that go to Urban Outfitters for that thrift store look with the department store price. Wow, a thrift store run by asians, what a new/trendy idea. Give me a freaking break. I'm not trying to pretend I'm some thrift store aficionado, but I can spot bullshit when I see it. My gripes about this place are that it is small, overpriced, the selection for guys is particularly lacking, and the organization of the jeans is relegated to a giant pile that you have to rummage through while the indifferent people who work there act like you're in their way. I know a prada shirt is probably upwards of 200 bucks, but doesn't mean I want to pay 90 for one that is clearly used. While the prices were certainly cheaper then department stores, they aren't cheap by any means. Second Time Around, a store in boston sells designer shit for mad cheap. Hell I got a Yves Saint Laurent velvet blazer there for 100 bucks. It would have cost me 300 at Tokio 7. There are tons of thrift stores in manhattan and while they might not be "high fashion" as the angry counter attendant kept yelling over the phone, you'll find quality stuff. Half the fun of thrift stores is finding gems that are cheap and this place doesn't offer that lure at all. read more

This is the WORST consignment store I've ever been to!! First they try to rip you off as much as they can. You can get more than twice they offer for your authentic luxury goods at Yoogi's closet, luxury exchange or couture usa!!! They have absolutely no clue what so ever about authentic vintage Louis Vuitton. Tried to consign with them and they told me that my vintage piece was a fake. I took it to Louis Vuitton store and it is 100% Authentic, it is a very unique piece made by the french company in the 70's.Obviously these people don't know their stuff and not at all professional. The most rudest and snobbiest employees I have ever encountered in NY. They think that they are THE shit for selling label clothing. Meanwhile, they have very little knowledge of designer and fashion. They do NOT authenticate the designer handbags. They do not take returns. So if you buy something and find out its fake they said they cant do anything about it. They said "you get what you pay for". For a consignment shop the price is simply ridiculous. At first glance, it's apparent that the items at this upscale Japanese owned consignment store are carefully chosen just like they are at many other trendy consignment/vintage stores. However, unlike the stuff in those, you won't find any outrageous super retro hipster styles of the month or run of the mill mall fare here. Instead, the focus is on high end labels, quality fabric, and clean, modern classics. Prices are beyond reasonable considering that typical labels carried include Marc by Marc Jacobs, Chanel, Comme des Garcons, Alice & Olivia, and Yves St. Laurent. Prices also run the gamut from $30 for a t-shirt to $900 for a coat depending on the brand, rarity of the item, and other, more nebulous parameters. My friend commented that the low prices are made possible by the existence of moneyed New Yorkers who regularly dispose of half their closet to make way for next season's trends. While service is readily available, there's no hand holding, which I prefer anyway since I like to be left to my own devices while shopping. read more

This is the 2nd consignment shop I check out along with Tokyo Joes. This place is so much larger than the Joes. I also like it better cause they have a larger selection, 3 dressing rooms (be careful if you are short though cause the dressing room door is like only 2 feet long and seems to end pretty high up, I kept thinking my butt was on display since I'm short). Because the selection is very large here, and the quality and name brands are excellent, you have to be prepared that most dresses you touch will run at least $80 and above. My friend got a pair of Miu Miu black, pointy pumps for $120. If you LOVE designer labels and don't want to pay full price but are ok with gently used, you HAVE to check this place out. It's in a cute college town area, too, so after you blow all your money here, you can then go spend a few bucks to get a slice of pizza or something, as you are hugging your Burberry trench coat you just scored for $400. read more

This is my favorite consignment store in the city, maybe b/c I remember shopping there when it was still a big secret. I have remained faithful, and Tokio 7 not only received my castoffs, but I never am able to walk out of there without spending some dough. There are some brands that seem to have showroom seller connections (Marc Jacobs, Issey Miyake), meaning you will pretty consistently find a ton of fairly current, sample sizes from these designers. The prices are GREAT for high end designer. Don't even bother taking Zara, French Connection level stuff there. This place is for high end only, and they only accept current season, or if it's nearing the end of summer, they will only accept fall/winter. You get the jist...In the last 6 months, I scored a large Balenciaga motercycle bag in dark green for $400 (yes, you heard that correctly) a pair of limited edition cowboy boots from Spain for $90 (never worn) and a Dries Van Noten wrap sweater for $65.
