I have done a lot of consignment in nyc and am well aware how it works. I was told to check this place out. The owner was the rudest man. After telling him I was there for consignment, he wouldn't say a word and chucked a sign in my face. He told me to take out my items one by one. I'm usually not a fan of thrift stores due to the randomness of the collections. However, Tokio 7 seems to only carry top brand items in great condition. I managed to get some amazing pieces during each of my visits (including a dress by Lanvin, a light sweater by YSL, etc). This place is pretty great. Modern, well priced merchandise and a solid, straightforward consignment policy. They sell things quickly and are very accessible on the phone if you want to check if your items have sold. My only recommendation to consignors is to go when someone other than the owner (the older man) is pricing and accepting merchandise. He's much more strict with what he accepts and how high he'll price things than everyone else that works there. He's also just pretty unfriendly and can be rude. I'm sad that I'm even writing a review for this place because it used to be my SECRET. I used to frequent the store's old basement location back in the day when I worked in a chichi industry that nonetheless expected me to show up in head to toe Alaia on welfare wages, as all chichi industries are wont to do in New York. Tokio 7 was the answer to my prayers - some of my finds from 2007 include a brand new silk Chloe runway gown (NOT See By C), killer Dries Van Noten knee high boots that still stop traffic, and silk Chanel flats - ALL of which were below $200 and nearly brand new. Over the years, I've consigned my own things with them when I was too lazy to eBay (they do keep their prices low and you only get half) and I've never had a problem with them. And unlike INA, their payment is immediate upon sales so it's a lot more convenient. I think it goes without saying based on their selection is that you can only bring Barney's Co-op brands and up to be resold, so I don't get all t he negative reviews that are like, "But I spent a lot on this Club Monaco flowered shirt from 2005! You can barely see the pit stains! Wah!" Honey, no. So why the three star review? Simply put: I don't think this place has been the same since they moved. Maybe it's the fact that they command a sidewalk storefront now, maybe it's because more people have heard about them, maybe it's because I myself have aged and gotten more discerning - but the magic seems to be gone. Instead of the racks yielding interesting, one of a kind Stella McCartney pieces in pristine condition they're not jammed to the gills with an entire decade's worth of sad, worn out fug DVF and Marc by Marc Jacobs stuff. The shoe selection, which also once held high standards in wear, look like something out of a landfill - I don't care if they're Louboutins, what's the point if you can see the remnants of the previous owner's toe jam clinging to the inner sole? As testament to the fact that this store has seriously gone downhill, I noticed that the men's shoe rack this weekend had a pair of FAKE Air Jordans. And I'm not even a sneakerhead - they were just obviously not real, as sneakers have all sorts of inner tags sewn onto the tongue and branding on the inner sole - all of which were absent. So for all the complaints about them too bitchy - I WISH. I wish they were as 2000x more bitchy, so that the store will again be filled with beautiful things. read more

I dont see why someone would give a bad review for this place. I've been coming here for almost 2 years and have walked out with something new every time. The selection good and the prices are unbeatable. They always seem to items, i personally like the selection of mens t-shirts and sunglasses. People complain about the staff but why even pay attention to them? You come to buy not to make friends with the staff. Stay out of the staffs way and dont ask any stupid questions and i guarantee a good experience at tokio 7. Oh and dont ask the asian man in front with semi long hair to see too many sunglasses, he is grumpy. read more

For the last 5 years I kept coming back to this place.They have great stuff indeed if you dig in. I really loved the wide range of clothing they carry even though I didnt appreciate the kind of attitude the staff had. It seems that the owner and the fellow workers do not offer the standard Japanese service. I get it that they don't since we are in the USA! but....aren't they worse than NY attitude.. The other day I heard all of them mal-speaking in Japanese about a non-Japanese customer walking in and laughing about her ..it sounded very mean. It's nice that some things never change in this city. Tokio 7 staff and owner were rude and near- hostile in the mid 90's, and sure enough, still are! Don't bother consigning anything if it's not Marc Jacobs or DVN. Max Mara, Michael Kors are apparently old and conservative. I thought this was a thrift shop like beacon's closet where they have really cheap stuff. Like i got a pair of really nice pumps from the 80's, all leather and all (even the sole), under $20. the brand doesn't exist anymore, but the shoes are excellent. anyways, so i was taken aback a little when i saw $100-price tags on used clothes albeit their designer origin... So i decided to leave after 5 or so minutes, and when i turned around i saw these two crazy eyes at the counter staring at me like a hawk. Hey mister, jeez, i was just looking around your store. It was just creepy and scary. You just don't do that to your customers, especially when they're 5 feet in front of you in your tiny-ass store. read more

Tokio 7 is the best store in NYC, consignment or otherwise. It's like a museum for clothes. Half of the time I can't even believe what I'm looking at. Everything is high end and high style, and usually in perfect condition. But most importantly everything is quirky and fun. Designers include Alexander McQueen, DvF, Jeremy Scott, Helmut Lang, Rag & Bone, Marc Jacobs, W118 by Walter Baker, and high-end sportswear like Stella McCartney for Adidas and Nike x Sacai. The sales staff are a bit cold and I certainly wouldn't mess with the guy in charge, but that also means you can browse for a while and no one will bug you. My one gripe is that items are pricey when first marked. However, you can ask how long until an item is discounted and they will tell you - sometimes they even realize that an item should have been marked down but wasn't. Yesterday I got a pair of perfect condition, black Marc Jacobs booties for $96 that were labeled $120 just because I asked. I've never sold so I can't speak to that side of the house...but as a shopper, this is my fave place. read more

Love this place, been buying and selling here since day 1 & I've always found the condition to be quite good. Especially when compared to say screaming Mimi's or, on the low end, beacons closet. They carry a lot of good brands, and while the pieces aren't generally as special as what you might find at amacord (though that's vintage and this is consignment so can't really compare) it's great for high quality basics or just anything black. read more

This place is definitely good for purchasing designers brand for cheap. I have been going there ever since it moved to a bigger location. There are two issues with this place. They are rude. They are greedy. They speak japanese, assuming i do not understand, but i do, and it is not alwyas that pleasant. The owner guy is especially blunt. You might find him cool, but... I dont. They are greedy and this is why they are only two stars for me. So when you consign your stuff there, they keep your stuff after 3months without notifying you. It is written that they will take your clothes after expiration date in the contract, but they dont remind you by calling or anything and keeps your clothes. Of course, it was my fault to not care enough, but they make no exceptions. Plus, the owner guy is only interested in selling fast, rather than compromising with the price that your stuff is really worth. I saw a guy consigning new golden goose for 150 and he didnt look so happy. Yay - a great new find for me! Gotta love that :) I wandered in here and browsed for about an hour today - holy designer statement pieces, batman! I noticed a lot of fun, edgy and downright weird stuff, some killer YSL thigh boots with mirrored heels (sadly 3 sizes too large) and so so many fantastic garments easily priced at a small fraction of their original cost in a LARGE range of sizes too! Seriously great stuff ranging from size 0 to size 12 (from what I saw). I scored a beautiful cross body strap black leather bag by Foley & Corrina for $150 and saw a beautiful brown leather Marc Jacobs good size bag for $125. They also have some unique designer jewelry and accessories as well. The only thing that kind of stinks is the customer service as there is literally NONE - they pretty much just stand behind the counter chatting and will ring you up when they're good and ready. read more

Holy mother in heaven this place is a gem. You will never fail to find at least a few pieces to fall in love with here. Because it's in the East Village and because of the brands that it carries, the prices aren't especially cheap here, but if you're looking for a nice and affordable selection of Marc Jacobs or Theory you've come to the right place. Although I love their shoe selection their clothing was poorly organized. Neither the shoes nor the clothes were grouped by sizes. It was like the scene from Pretty Woman when she's shopping in Beverly Hills except in this case it's a consignment shop and they're not selling brand-new Prada. The clerks stand around speaking Japanese and don't even try to hide the fact that they're talking about you. It's clear that good customer service is a foreign concept. I might go back in the future to check out what new shoes they get but this time I'll be prepared to be treated like a second-class citizen. read more

Tokio 7 seems like an amazing find until you realize everything is great but not your size or just a little too expensive. I did find a current season Dries Van Noten top for 75 bucks so I can't complain too much. The store does have a reputation for being very picky and snooty with their consignment appointments but i do enjoy the occasional stroll and browse through their wares. Once in a while you find something worthwhile - just don't expect rock-bottom, true vintage pricing. read more

Really well organized, totally deserving of the hype in my opinion. Racks of nice button downs, lots of Theory, Chaiken, Burberry. The shoes are the only things that look a little shabby for the price, but again, I'm pretty particular with shoes, my friend got two pairs her first time here. A bizarre crowd of annoying preteens and St.Marks hipsters and Park Avenue moms. Totally worth the trip though. I'm trying to restrain myself from going too often! The only reason it's a 4 star, not 5 is that I've been to better places on the West Coast where I'm from, but NYC in general is more expensive. read more

I've never read so many mixed reviews about a place until Tokio 7's. Quite honestly, people should approach all consignment stores the same way they approach any thrift store - with suspicion and a bit of hesitation before the purchase. But you also have to trust your intuition. You can't go in thinking everything they sell is legit and authentic...it's a freakin thrift store! You'll find some treasures for sure, but before you do, you're going to sift through a ton of junk (and possibly fakes). read more

Super great. It's super beautiful used clothes store even many pieces's condition seems in intact! Almost every pieces's condition is super Agrade.. I would rather say that pieces are artworks. That's not just clothes if the great pieces were called just clothes that would be really rude thing for the pieces! I was so impressed so I might cry since the moment I found the super high beautiful clothes.. God.. Is that real? Is.. Is that a clothes!? That price seems normally (at least)$150 (based in jacket or not so heavy pieces but also woman's heel also but some times you may find $50-$90)That might sounds not so reasonable price as thrift stuff *but they who run this store probably selected the great pieces with their great view that can distinguish valuable pieces so we don't need to spend a lot of time to find great condition in high value designer brand in one store trying on different style brand so I think it's reasonable price. For the selection and labels they have, the prices are lovely. All the clothes are in very good condition - I've bought two dresses here that have had the label still on. It is a bit of a hit-or-miss (with both sizes and selections) as it is with any thrift/consignment store, but for some reason I've been on a lucky streak the last few times I've been here. (Shoe-wise, though, I've very rarely seen anything good that hasn't been a size 12.) The staff is courteous and keep to themselves mostly. This place racially profiles. im a stylst and walked in w a designer bag full of designer goods with tags still attached from previous shoots of the past and was literaly told to take each item out one by one and lined it all up on the counter as the buyer spoke in japanese to the other 2 workers behind the counter, they were saying not to take anything from me because they are all stolen items. They didnt know i could understand japanese .Not only that ,just because im Afro American with a mouth full of gold teeth, it doesnt mean i steal. After all the items were lined up, She then said ,maybe another day, Granit the items were everything from marc jacobs to proenza schouler , Del Toro and chanel. I dig Tokio7, but it's hit or miss. Sometimes I walk in to find a fabulous sweater from Yohji Yamamoto or a fantastic pair of pumps from Prada. A lot depends on how hard I sift through their crowded racks of clothing, but also, it might just be the weather. Either way, if you love designer clothes, but don't want to pay the price or love slightly vintage styles (think 70s, 80s) head to Tokio7. They carry both men's and women's apparel. read more

They also do consignment, so if you need to get rid of the stuff you don't wear, call to make an appointment. I used to come here quite often. Actually, so often that it got embarrassing when the staff recognized me and said "welcome back". It's always a hit or miss with stores like these- and there seem to be more and more in the area these days. Anyway, they used to carry a lot of rare designer items, but now I find they are not as picky with their selections. They sell over-priced mediocre brands. I've gotten a few finds here. A Phillip Lim bag for 1/2 price. Brand new with dust bag. The staff leaves you alone to browse. My only issue with this place and a lot of higher end consignment stores is that the seem to always have very small mens shoe sizes. to find an 11/12 is like a miracle and its usually blah shoes. I freaking LOVE this place. The East Village certainly has it's plethora of consignment shops but usually they are too cheap/low quality clothing or crazy expensive. This place truly has amazing designers and the prices are pretty darn good for what you're buying. The store is well spaced out and has a good amount of items. The best part and what makes the shopping experience SO much easier....they put the ticket with the designer & price in a sharpie and it's the only thing on the tag. These tags are not in random places within the piece of clothing...but strategically placed (at the bottom of the sleeve closest to you, etc) so flipping through the clothes, you don't waste time trying to find out the designer and price. The shoes are also well marked with sizes. The purse selection could be better and the you're only allowed 3 items in the dressing room at once. Well the dressing rooms are right in the middle of the store so when you have to go open your door & get the rest of your clothes that are hanging on the rack, it's a bit awkward when your half in your dress. Constantly putting back on my clothes just so I can go get 3 more of my items because the entire store will see you. read more

Tokio 7 on East 7th Street is a great place to sell your couture castoffs on consignment -- or pick up somebody elses! This second hand clothing store deals with a lot of high end designer clothing, so the prices can be quite high for second hand. But they also have groovy pieces at more regular prices minus the designer tag. Either way, everything for sale in this store is good looking in some way; they also have a large range of accessories and a few Japanese chotschkes for sale. This place ain't cheap, but by comparison to what you'd pay if you were to actually buy a new Marc Jacobs skirt, it's 'reasonable'. Too bad they buy and sell at the same time, so you can be standing around for awhile while they decide if they're going to take something on consignment.
