I've been here multiple times to consign before I found a non-Japanese consignment place closer to me now (but with less of a personality). Tokyo Joe's small but it's in the East Village (justifies the size and you have your pick of other things to do afterwards nearby). It also pre-dated Buffalo Exchange at least two decades: They are ultra serious about their brands and quality in a Japanese-strict way, so it makes it a treat if you're stopping through to look! The women who work there may not be friendly and may even chat away in Japanese with each other while you're there but they're NEVER, EVER talking about you (it's like when you're at a Duane Reade/Walgreens or other chain store in the city where the BIPOC workers are bored, have no buy-in, and need something to do*). You'll get ALLL the friendliness you need in an equivalent store in Japan: Maybe even too much, honestly. My partner was treated well consigning a fall jacket, and that's done partly electronically now, including making the appointment and receiving your estimate. The employees at Beacon's Closet may be more polite but they make you wait around for your estimate like a dog. Tokyo Joe's does not: They will send it to you afterwards. *There's also high turnover of merchandise in the tiny store: When you're not there there's a ton of activity behind the scenes. read more

I've been looking for a good pair of jeans to wear on the daily and so when I passed by this place, I thought it might've had what I was looking for. This place is pretty small, but packed to the brim. They do offer a quite a few higher end options, as well as a few very high options and regular options. I would say this is leaning more high end for a vintage place. They also have a small selection of vintage jewelry that are reasonably priced. I got a pair of cute Rag and Bone jeans for ~$45 so definitely a good cop in my opinion! I was a bit....nervous though about the process to try on the pants. At first glance, there doesn't seem to be a fitting room, but when I asked the sales associate, he said there was. Well....it turns out the fitting room is just a very small area in the middle of the store where they pull some curtains around you. I was kind of nervous because anyone could just walk into the curtains at any point and see me changing. The owner is very detail oriented, friendly and really takes her time to go over all items to make sure they are salable and trendy. She knows a ton of information on the brands and styles! I stooped by 1st time, I really loved this place!! I found the items I love but reasons for "only 3 stars." I've read recent reviews were 1 star... all about the customer services. okay. I understood. To be honest, before I was goin in to the store/ I was hesitated to in. Why? Perhaps the same woman - (@the review) looked at me from the store as well as she was sitting by the entrance. What made me to go in? so, there was another customer went inside, Ive followed her. Then 1more customer came. These 2 seemed like they come to get the item often. (customers are friendly to the workers) but she didn't say "welcome or hello." She just stepped away. after both customers started to talk, a man worker(little friendly than a women) @the cushier started to walked around and communicate such as "hello" etc.(only greeting. I guess if you speak with this man, he might help the customers better. I also saw that the woman talked another language with him and laugh. Just don't pay attention..!! if the customer tries to get the item after, by the stores suggested, you should take a card and ask for them their name... (Just saw the customer had a bad experience from that.) but I see this place is good price for good stuff, just buy and walk away. It's hard to find a store like this. I will come back! Wow, I think I found my new favorite designer consignment store. Their selection is top notch here. True, the store is VERY small, the Japanese staff aren't exactly the nicest people, and their fitting room is actually a small area with a curtain for you, in the middle of the store, but all that doesn't matter to me when I see all these great designer items for sale. There are definitely a lot of big names here: Gucci, Miu Miu, Anna Sui, DvF, Theory, Louis Vuitton, etc. I was so in shock at the amount of big designer names they have here. There is a section for guys' pants and tops. I did see at least one guy in here browsing, which is great because usually I don't see guys going to consignment stores. I guess this store is in the East Village though, so maybe that changes things? I thought they would be super overpriced, but actually I would say the prices are quite reasonable. I walked out with a $24 camel Theory blazer, a red and grey Ella Moss dress for $36, and a Yumi Kim top for $25. Not too bad -- they were all in great to like new condition, too! I was also looking at an Anna Sui brand new with tags skirt, originally $300 but now for $33 (!). I also really wanted a Louis Vuitton pink blazer for $144 (didn't get because I'm usually hesitant about spending over $100 on a single item of clothing). To give you an idea of what other items are in the store, along with their prices: DvF blue heartline dress for $34, J. Brand jeans for $30, Chloe sweater for $28, etc. Are these prices GREAT or what?! Besides the clothes, and the small section of shoes and handbags, there's also a selection of the really high end brands up on the wall (think Dolce and Gabbana, Pucci, Chanel, etc) -- I think they were mostly dresses or two piece suits. Prices were around $120-$200 or so for the items on the wall, which really aren't bad considering the names that are up there. I noticed that a lot of their tags would have at least one slash and a new price to indicate a markdown. My guess is that after a certain time period, if the item is not sold, they mark it down at least once to try to sell it. So come back often and maybe that item you were eyeing could still be there, but like another 25-50% off! I'll be sure to stop by again sometime soon. read more

It's true that Tokyo Joe doesn't have as much real estate as Tokio 7, but they still have some fantastic clothes at great prices. During my last visit, I spied (with my little eye) a hot pink Nanette Lepore dress, a fuzzy black Club Monaco sweater dress, and a black and white Diane Von Furstenberg print dress, all which were priced below $70. But be prepared to drop a few hundred for a pair of heavily worn heels. This is pure Saks Fifth Avenue thrift shop. Who can pass up a $98 Marc Jacobs wool jacket? This place may be a resort for a designer junkie but be prepared to get hit here and there and maybe end up like me, elbowing someone in the "fitting room". Been my go-to for vintage clothing, shoes & especially accessories for at least 15 years. Tiny shop, but they seriously always have just what I need - something super unique and fabulous for a very good price. Yesterday I found JUST the hat I was searching for for weeks (see pic) - had gone to countless large or pricier shops & found nada- then I stepped into Tokyo Joe and spotted it - down to the color & fabric (a lil too big, but who cares for $8) - snatched it & another one up in seconds...."why didn't I just come here in the first place?" Was & is always my thought when I stop by. They blow Buffalo Exchange (next door) to smithereens. Almost everything is a "must have" - special, unique & often amazing @ Tokyo Joe's whereas you're lucky to find 1 or 2 items you can describe that way at most average vintage shops like L Train, or Buffalo Exchange which is just used clothing & shoes - & mostly duds or cliche items not worth the sorting effort. At least L Train/No Relation have true vintage. But the thing about stores that kind of "pre-select" items is that usually they're pretty pricey - not Tokyo Joe! I love Tokyo Joe! This location is very very small and packed with great finds. Both vintage and up to date designer items. They sell men and women clothing, shoes, and accessories. I walked past the store yesterday and they had a vintage good condition Gucci bag marked down from $600 to $400. They also had some crazy Chanel heels here. I always find myself staring at the accessories glass case in the front because they have the real goodies there. Chanel silk scarves, small designer trinkets, perfume (new), and small leather goods. Very tiny consignment store. I would say it's Buffalo Exchange's high-end neighbor. Stuff here is mostly designer. The handbags are Balenciaga, the shoes are Ferragamo, and the sweaters are cashmere. I think stuff here is hit or miss but the turnover is fairly high (maybe new stock weekly) since it seems like a go to place for consignment higher end stuff. The pieces here tend to be quirky or weird, I guess is the best way to put it. Got a big 90s/80s vibe to it, which seems to make sense since they appear to like vintage designer stuff. I think I like the place only when they know I'm Japanese. Because otherwise, they will say things about you. I've gone to this place a couple of times before so you think by now they might recognize my face. But one time, after going into Buffalo Exchange, I decided to head here (since it's right next door) to get some cute shoes. The selection isn't bad hence why the extra star. And yes, I've purchased here before the shoes. I was looking around with my friend who doesn't speak Japanese, hence why I wasn't. But just because I'm not doesn't mean I'm not Japanese or that I don't understand it. Well, after a good while looking around, the girl behind us just starts complaining about how annoying it is that we're browsing. Wait, what? Since when is browsing at a clothing store, especially a thrift store, bad? Before that, I believe she commented on my taste of shoes, but I was only half paying attention/didn't care. Well, I wanted the shoes, so I paid for those at the register. While signing though, I politely said "Before you start saying bad things about people, make sure they're not Japanese first." I have been a regular customer since the store opened,even though as other reviews note the staff is seldom even polite, but lately the woman at the counter now refuses to open the door for me and even leaves the store and goes to the basement with her cell phone leaving the store unattended. A walk-in closet of a store in the East Village that's packed with some sweet designer deals. The sales staff aren't the friendliest and most of the time ignore the customers shopping in the cramped space. The selection is good, thought I prefer Tokio 7 for this kind of shopping and while there's a lot of big labels, there's also a lot of mediocrity in the product choices. Worth a peek when you're in the neighborhood and looking for labels on the cheap. Don't expect much help from the staff and avoid during peak shopping hours if you want to be able to breathe. After all that though you may just find that perfect piece at a tiny fraction of the original tag. read more

What I love most about this store: - Everything they have is in GREAT condition. Even the shoes! Didnt see any creases in the ones that I saw. - They have many brand names ( high end included) and the prices they have them for are a steal. - I was somewhat scared of their little dressing room, fearing that I could be seen even if I close the little curtain, but no. The dressing room is safe. The only problem is: - The staff does talk shit and isnt really that welcoming/helpful ( you probably wouldnt ask them for help because thats the vibe you get). Probably the best consignment store in the area, although there are some downsides. The positives: they seem to carry higher end brands, the items are in good condition and are usually decently priced, and, as others have mentioned, each visit to the store is a different experience, as there is constant turnaround. Although quite small, there is a good amount of stuff to sift through, but not so much as to overwhelm and give you heart palpitations a la Buffalo Exchange. The negatives: the ladies that work there are a bit rude and definitely unhelpful; I almost would rather not get something than ask them to retrieve it from the wall or a higher shelf, because if you end up not buying it, they act annoyed. It's a tiny space and if there is more than one other person there, it's hard to not be in each others' way. Also, the accessories tend to be overpriced, which is a shame because some stuff is quite cute. I managed to find another beloved treasure here: a beautiful, smooth-as-butter, lusciously soft black Goldenbleu handbag with shiny gold hardware all for a insanely low price of $80! Finally! All my hard work has paid off. I always come visit Toyko Joe after going to find some (cheaper) second-hand duds at Buffalo Exchange next door. It's like the thrill of finding my next designer-at-90% off purchase pumps some kind of fashion addict adrenaline into my brain. And there it was, my now favorite bag, perched perfectly on the counter, just waiting for the perfect owner to find it. And I did :) Some other reviews mention that the staff isn't very helpful. It's true, they just sit and chat in Japanese and basically don't really give you attention. But, if you ask them questions or want to go to the fitting room or see an item behind the counter, they ARE very helpful. I think it's just their regular routine not to really bother customers unless they ask for it. Other gorgeous things I spotted: Elie Tahari cocktail dress for $30, men's white Prada shirt for $58, A. Staff definitely not the friendliest, most helpful. Nice things here and there. I actually almost purchased a gorgeous Chanel bag, that upon closer inspection was a fake. Priced at $1200... I asked for the authentication card just in case my eye was off, and I was told that the owner is a buyer for Chanel and there is no question about the authenticity... Wondering why she couldn't have gotten it authenticated. **Sideye** Just sayin... They got kind of upset at my inquiry and I don't think I'll be visiting there any time soon. lol. Upon several visits to the very tiny and very cramped Tokyo Joe, I often find myself walking out empty handed. However, that's only because I usually go in hoping to find particular labels like Comme Des Garçons and Yohji Yamamoto (which they do get in from time to time). The racks here are always stocked a wide array of carefully selected, secondhand designer duds. I also find the prices to be very reasonable, like a Dries Van Noten knitted top for $30 or a Yohji Yamamoto button down shirt for $46. Tokyo Joe is definitely worth a peek if you just so happen to be in the neighborhood. Just don't expect this place to be your new best friend. read more

I was on my way to pick up a cheesecake at Veniero's and is it my fault if this store happens to be halfway up the block? Anyways, let's talk about the bounty I found tonight: White Prada dress shirt = $42. Brand new (still with tags) Theory sleeveless top = $15. The most gorgeous Champagne color drape cowl neck long sleeve satin shirt = $40 - very sexy in that Keira Knightley in Atonement way. Moschino white and blue off the shoulder peasant top =$28. Some of the labels I saw were Proenza Schouler, Katayone, Betsey Johnson, Marni, lots of Marc Jacobs and a couple of Chanel pieces (my fav was a gorgeous black jumper type piece that would be perfect for lounging in wearing a large white hat). I also saw at least 3 pairs of Jimmy Choo's ranging from $40-85. Plenty of Ferragamo. Several gorgeous pair of Dolce Gabbana heels and Costume National. And many of these in 7.5-9 range. The handbag selection was okay. I'd stick with the clothing and the shoes. I will definitely be back. read more

The area of this store is about the same as a bento box. I didn't really find anything that interested me, but it was entertaining listening to the staff converse in Japanese and knowing they were unaware I was listening. Reading some of the other reviews, I'm surprised that the staff makes fun of their customers. Fortunately I didn't hear anything about myself, but who knows what they said after I left. I might come back again to see if they have anything I like. This store (in its ENTIRETY) seems to be a hit or miss with each trip. I'm not talking about the selection of clothes, but it seems like every experience differs from each other. Most of the time, the staff is entirely unhelpful and don't lift a finger to make you feel welcome. However, I've also had a few experiences where they were FANTASTIC and attentive. I seriously don't know what's up with the moodiness of the staff...weird. Secondly, as with most consignment stores, you will have great finds one trip, and zilch the next. Sometimes I think the store's selection is entirely terrible, while a week later, everything is my style and I want it all! Random right? And then there are the prices. They seem inconsistent. I will find a beautiful Burberry sweater for $40 next to a hideous Levi's sweater for the same price. I just don't get it. I've seen a gently used pair of Louboutins for the same price as Kenneth Cole heels in the same condition. I mean, it's a great deal if you're getting the Burberry or Louboutins, but you just feel ripped off if you get the Levi's sweater or the Kenneth Cole heels. That being said, I have to give this place 3 stars. Try to avoid peak hours, as this place is tiny and it's really hard to shop in the dim light as it is without people all up in your grill. read more

For those not in the know, Tokyo Joe is a consignment shop that gives designer duds a 2nd chance at a 2nd life. It is a small, cramped place but they do pack a lot of items into it. This makes shopping tricky since there isn't too much space to maneuver. Don't let the space put you off. There are a lot of items packed into this shop, and they are well organized. I can't attest to the selection for women, but I did find an amazing pair of sunglasses that I get complimented on regularly (there is a lot). If you don't find anything on your visit, you can console yourself with a slice of *amazing* ricotta cheesecake next door at Veniero's. And if you find something? Then reward yourself. It is long and narrow, and uncomfortable with more than two shoppers. It's actually impossible to shop with about 5 people in the store. There is only one dressing room, which slows things down. Dozens of visits later... I've still never bought anything at this consignment store. My guy has though - I think he'd give it 4 stars. But he's not writing the review - I am. It's definitely quality stuff here. Mostly high-end designer labels, often couture stuff in good condition. It's not inexpensive (although certainly you can get great deals), and it seems that the majority of their sellers tend to be far more petite than the American (or even the New York City) average. It's also tiny and cramped, shopping is virtually impossible unless you're the only shopper in the store - and the space limitations also mean that the selections are necessarily limited. read more

how have i not discovered this place sooner?? i've always had the notion that consignment stores in nyc are way overpriced (usually the case)...well i stopped in not expecting to find anything i'd be willing to drop my money on, but i walked out five minutes later with a vintage-style (but brand new!) J. Crew leather bag for only $48! I had seen the bag at J. Crew and it was still selling for $238 when I checked. So I was pretty impressed I found a bag for such a great deal. There was a small dent in the back (maybe from pressing on other handbags), but not a big deal at all for a bag I was eyeing and had passed up because of the price. I browsed through a few other things and overall it looks like a well maintained store with impressive brand selection, good condition items, and affordable prices. Even after coming here for years, let me just say, the horrible--and I mean the MOST unfriendly, condescending, look at you like you're trash--salespeople here are still so jarring to interact with. It's just shocking each and every time. They seem to have no desire to sell anything or even just let you shop without being a terrible and lurking presence in the corner. And there are usually like three of them. So explain to me how a store that seems to barely sell anything, is approx 100 sq feet, and has had to resort to selling stuff from Kimora Lee Simmons and the like, can employ three people to work at once? Clearly the world works in ways I don't understand. And let me just reiterate, their horrible customer service and sh*tty merchandizing has led them to receive less high end merchandise, so now they sell some really cheap stuff. You go in and think...Ok a consignment store...but this is from topshop...huh? Still, though, there are numbnutz' out there that will give them their Loewe, Marni, Wang, etc, and the prices are reasonable so give it a go. This is the kind of tiny, packed store that gives you a raging headache if you're not in the mood to really dig through the racks, but can yield some real treasures if you are. They usually have a few really expensive classic pieces -- I've seen Chanel and de la Renta -- alongside a lot of trendier (and cheaper!!) designers like DVF and Botkier and Catherine Malandrino. The prices are decent, and sometimes you'll find pieces with the original tags still on, which is always nice. The one consistent disappointment I've had is the shoe section -- maybe I just pick bad times to come by, but I've rarely seen anything good in the 36.5-37 size range.
