We stopped by Toku for lunch, and it exceeded our expectations. The restaurant is beautifully designed with warm lighting and an elegant atmosphere. The service was exceptional--friendly, attentive, and very prompt. At times it was almost too attentive, as the busser kept trying to clear our plates while we were still talking and eating at our own pace. The food, however, was absolutely outstanding. The Peking duck was amazing. I'm from Asia, so I've had Peking duck countless times, and Toku truly delivered. The duck was tender, the skin was perfectly crispy, and it wasn't gamey at all. Paired with the sauce, every bite was delicious. We also ordered the crispy rice, dumplings, and tuna pizza. Everything was excellent. The tuna pizza was a pleasant surprise--we weren't sure what to expect, but we're so glad we ordered it. To finish, we had the frozen banana dessert, and it was to die for. We wanted to come back to Toku after having such a great first experience, but unfortunately this visit didn't live up to my expectations. The ambiance is always beautiful, especially being located inside Aventura Mall, and the atmosphere is one of the reasons we wanted to return. When we first arrived, the service was attentive while taking our appetizer and sushi orders. However, after placing both our appetizers and entrées, the service noticeably slowed down. We started with the Otoro Nigiri, Shrimp Dumplings, and Lamb Spare Ribs, and they were all delicious, fresh, tender and flavorful. No complaints there at all. The issue came with one of our entrées. The Toku Ramen, Kung Pao Chicken, and Braised Short Ribs all arrived together, aside from my Shrimp Fried Rice. After waiting a few minutes, one server told us it was on its way, while another said it was just being plated. It ended up taking another 20-25 minutes before it finally arrived, making it seem like the order may not have been put in initially. It was disappointing because everyone else at the table had finished their meals before mine even arrived, so I just ended up getting a to-go box. After that, service continued to be slow, and it took quite a while to receive our check. I was especially disappointed because I had recommended Toku to my family based on my previous visit. Toku in Aventura was definitely a good time. We went during Miami Spice and honestly I see why people like this place so much. The service was great, the food came out fast, and everything we had was flavorful and well made. I really loved the ambience too. The dark decor gives it that sexy upscale vibe without trying too hard. It feels like the kind of place where you accidentally end up staying longer than you planned because the atmosphere is just that nice. The food was really good overall and I liked being able to try a few different things from the menu. Nothing felt overly heavy or boring, which I appreciated. Also, shout out to the staff because everybody was super attentive without hovering over the table every five minutes asking if we're "still working on that." Highlights included the Rock Shrimp Tempura (GOOD), King Crab Tempura (AMAZING), and the full Peking Duck (AMAZING) , along with Kung Pao Chicken (MEH), Sweet Soy Marinated Skirt Steak (AMAZING), Wagyu Steak Frites, and Fried Rice. Desserts (Banana Wonton (MEH) and Warm Brownie (AMAZING) . This is definitely a higher-end spot, our bill for four people was about $600 and change, but the food and experience were worth it. Aventura Mall has just about everything you could imagine. Yet, somehow it's always been missing a solid sit-down Asian restaurant. This has always been very surprising for one of the largest malls in the country. That finally changed with Toku Modern Asian, and after our Miami Spice experience here, I'm glad to say this cuisine gap has officially been filled. We stopped in for Miami Spice brunch and lunch menus (they were kind enough to let us mix and match), fueling up before a day of shopping. Everything started with Salted Edamame, a very simple but essential warm-up. Fresh, well-seasoned, and gone in minutes. For my appetizer, I went with the Tuna Pizza, which came out crisp, flavorful, and generously topped. I've had versions of this dish elsewhere, but this one held its own with great flavors and a satisfying crisp. This is the perfect shareable starter. For my main, I ordered the Short Rub with Pad Thai noodle, and it ended up being exactly what I wanted. Rich, tender short rib with the pad thai style noodles made for a very filling combination. Meanwhile, my wife upgraded to the Skirt Steak & Eggs, and after stealing a few bites, I can confirm it was one of the better skirt steaks either of us has had in a while. As people who grew up appreciating the delicious simplicity of rice with an egg on top, we understood the appeal immediately. For dessert, I went with their very unique Banana Wonton. This featured passion fruit cream with lychee sorbet and mint leaf. My wife is not a banana person but did not mind the fried banana wonton, and especially enjoyed the lychee sorbet. Service was excellent and friendly throughout our lunch. There weren't that many people dining while we were, but it started to fill up by the time we left. The restaurant itself is expansive and beautiful. It reminds me a lot of Hutong in Brickell but more laid back. Toku had been on my list for a while, and Miami Spice finally gave me the perfect excuse to check it out. I'm glad we did. After a long day of travel we had to do some last minute shopping for an upcoming wedding. We were looking all over the mall for a ceviche restaurant I had found on yelp. However it alluded us. By this time we were exhausted and starving and decided change it up and go to Toku since we had parked near by. Boy I'm glad we did... I came to check out their Miami Spice menu. I was pleasantly surprised. The menu had a vast variety. The portions were fair, and the food came out very quickly. The chicken wrap, there was nothing to write home about, just ground chicken with lettuce and a side of hoisin sauce. The short rib was good, but the pad thai was a bit dry. The waitress was pretty attentive and other staff came by to check on me while I ate often. Maybe it is because I have astigmatism, but the lighting is too low. The meal started with Edamame, which was exactly what you'd hope for: simple, fresh, and gone in about three minutes. For the appetizer, I went with the Dim Sum Sampler and regretted not ordering three more lol. Every dim sum bite was unique and packed with flavor. The leek dumpling caught me off guard (in a good way), and the mushroom dumpling was my favorite. Honestly, you can't go wrong with any of them! Upgraded my entrée to the skirt steak with egg, and it was one of the best quality skirt steaks I've had in a long time. As a Cuban, I have a deep appreciation for rice topped with an egg, and while the dish might look small, it's deceptively filling. Dessert was half a mochi in cookies and cream, matcha, and mango flavors. Very standard and delicious. Nothing is wrong with the spice menu but I wanted to try something else. Plus the staff were so friendly and helpful with explaining the menu. For starters we ordered the pork gyoza which is pan-fried and delicious. For our mains to share we ordered the spicy Hong Kong pork and jade tiger shrimp with a side of jasmine rice and garlic broccoli. Everything was amazing! The spicy Hong Kong pork is thinly sliced and not spicy but the sauce is slightly sweet and savory. The jade tiger shrimp was delicious and it has a stir fry vegetables with cashews that added nice texture to the dish. The garlic broccoli is crispy and a perfect add on with the jasmine rice. For dessert we ordered the banana wonton and that was the perfect way to end our meal. The banana wonton is warm and crispy plus it comes with vanilla ice cream and whip cream. The place is beautiful, i don't recall what it used to be, but it has a fancy bar- see pictures, very nice indoor seating and a covered patio as well. The meal portions were quite generous, i was impressed with the short rib portion and it was very tasty, I really did not expect to be wowed by it. Place was beautiful, service was good, and overall food was very good! My only complain were the mochi- the texture was grainy, kinda like when you chew old chewing gum thats disintegrating... I visited with a group of friends to check out their Miami Spice Brunch menu and was pleasantly surprised by the variety of options. Even better, they allowed us to choose between brunch and lunch, which isn't always the case at other places. For the first course, I tried the Dim Sum Sampler. The fried rice was simple but flavorful, not overloaded with ingredients. The fried egg was cooked perfectly, and the steak's glaze had the right balance of sweetness and savoriness. My friend had the Ube Waffles with mango butter cream & yuzu syrup. They were also tasty & worth a try. For the final course, we had the Mochi Ice Cream Sampler and the Banana Wonton with Lychee ice cream. I would recommend skipping the Sampler, except for the Matcha Green Tea flavor, which was delicious. The Banana Wonton dessert was tasty but quite small. Nonetheless, considering the price and variety, this Miami Spice menu is definitely worth trying! Dessert - Banana Wonton. This dessert was the star of the meal for me. The banana wonton was tiny, BUT it was accompanied with a passion fruit whipped cream and a lychee sorbet. This was a wonderful combination of flavours. The decor is pleasant. The service was efficient. My rating is a 4.5, so I am showing a generous 5. I started off with the Toku-Gria drink and that was all I needed for the night! For appetizers, we got the shrimp dumplings and edamame dumplings. The sauce with the shrimp dumplings was spicy but not overwhelming. The edamame dumplings were amazing! For my entree I got the Miso Black Cod and it was so flavorful. It came with shishito peppers. I could have gotten another side but I knew I wanted dessert, which was the Fuji Tatin. O. M. G. The perfect way to end a great dinner! Overall Toku deserves a round of applause! Upon arrival, the host wasn't welcoming at all. She barely acknowledged us, rushed off without saying a word, and we had to assume we were supposed to follow her. She swung the door open to the outside seating area, let it go, and it fell back on us as we were walking behind her. Not exactly a pleasant first impression. Once seated, it took quite a while to receive water. When our server finally came over, the first thing he said was that the kitchen closes in 10 minutes -- it was 8:50 PM. Online it clearly states they close at 10 PM, so why wasn't this communicated when/before we were sat? There was no warm welcome, no recommendations, nothing -- and it was my first time dining there. We ordered a good amount of food, and somehow two of the items entered were wrong -- conveniently the more expensive ones. Whether he misheard us or just sent in whatever, it felt careless. We ordered one drink earlier at 8:45 when seated, and at 9 PM asked for a shot or even a glass of wine and we were told "no, sorry we're closed now." That made no sense considering the posted closing time is 10pm. Their excuse was "we have something tomorrow morning for this area of the restaurant".. ok? It's night time.. You would think a restaurant would want to increase their check average and make an additional liquor sale, especially when guests are already spending a significant amount of money. Instead of being accommodating, we were told no and rushed out. It makes absolutely no sense from both a hospitality and business standpoint. The entire experience felt rushed. Staff kept swarming the table asking if they could clear plates or if we were still eating. Our waters were empty for half the meal, and when we finally asked for a Coke, it was warm. We spent a lot of money to feel hurried out and poorly treated. Absolutely disappointing. No hospitality, no accountability. I absolutely love this spot! It has become my new go to restaurant in Aventura for Chinese food. It's a great spot to enjoy a dinner with a group of friends or family members because the portions are quite large. It's nice for a date night too, but I prefer to go with more people so I can try different dishes. Some of my favorite dishes here are the fried rice, asian Caesar salad, tuna pizza, spicy tuna crispy rice, rock shrimp tempura, pork gyoza, edamame dumplings, chicken vegetable soup, peking duck, and sesame chicken! Safe to say I tried almost just about everything and loved it! Some other dishes I have tried but not sure I would order again were: lamb spare ribs (I prefer beef or pork ribs these were too fatty), spicy edamame, and I don't love the flavor of their beef and sauce that they use for the beef & broccoli. The service has always been great here too. The hostess stand and management is always friendly and our most recent waiter (His name I think is Wiz) was very good and attentive. read more

Although the former tenant,Grand Luxe, went for an upscale vibe, Toku takes it up several notches in both food quality and ambience. We had a lite dinner, yellowtail ponzu jalapeño appetizer $27 and the small Peking Duck $55. The large version is available for $85 but the small at $55 is plenty of duck for two with around 8 or more pancakes. The quality is up there with Jaya, Komodo and other top venues. Busboys dress in white outfits that makes me think of Mandarin Oriental or Peninsula. Service is good but not perfect.
