Tried this place a couple of times when I was in the area for work. First time, went the Curry route. It was done fairly well, good flavors, and the protein wasn't over cooked. Second time with a large group - there were comments like "well, the sushi rice i'ld give a c+". They also had troubles with the drinks and service...we had called more than 24 hrs ahead of time to let then know that 15 people would attend, but it didn't seem like they were staffed for it I had a seafood dish in a light sauce. The lobster tail and shrimp were WAY over cooked and rubbery. The scallops were the only seafood that was properly cooked. read more

Tokyo & Thai (T&T) moved into the failed "Z's Restaurant" (aka "Jerry's" of "Jerry's Better Burger" fame before Jerry died). T&T have put a lot into the interior of the restaurant to give it a genuine Asian feel. So, walking into T&T I could tell this would be one of the better dining experiences in Smithfield. Thankfully, this proved true. Prior to eating at T&T's the first time, I stopped by and grabbed one of the menus a few days prior to dining there. Upon seeing their menu, I realized my novice Thai palate would require me to do some research on the food. The menu is (as the their name would suggest) a mixture of Japanese, Chinese and Thai. I steered away from the Japanese sushi (maybe next time), so that left me with mostly Chinese and Thai. I zeroed in on the Curry Pots They have five curry pot dishes (i.e. Red, Green, Penang, Massaman & Yellow). Each of these dishes are different, but all are spicy. Based on my research, the Penang curry ($14) looked best for me. It came in a bowl, with a variety of ingredients (i.e. chicken, beef, shrimp, etc) in a creamy brown spicy sauce. It was simply delicious. It did have some heat to it, but the underlying favors were sweet and tasty. My wife got Teriaki Beef ($12). It was sliced beef on a platter with a delicious Teriaki flavor. For a non-spicy choice, try this beef. You'll love it! Finally, our waiter brought out a fried banana. Nothing to write home about, but it was a cheap good dessert to end the meal. My daughter love it. Give Smithfield's newest restaurant a try. I think you'll like it. Also, check out the local Smithfield paper before you go, they've been running 15% off coupons every week. Had the chicken pad Thai and my husband had the chicken teriyaki. We were not impressed. The pad Thai lacked flavor and heat. When I asked for a spice rack or pepper flakes, was given salt and black pepper. My husband's meal came with a salad which was iceberg lettuce drenched in dressing. He didn't bother to eat it. The chicken teriyaki was rubbery and unimpressive. We didn't try the Chinese food or sushi. Maybe we picked the wrong dishes, but we won't be back. Who are the people giving 5 stars to this establishment. The food is sub par, and why do they attempt to incorporate every Asian cusine in one building. I cannot believe people in this area are so immune to actual Thai, Japanese or Chinese food that they feel this place comes close to representing any simbilancle of acceptability. The service at lunch is absolutely horrific and I will never return. If negative stats were available I would certainly use that option. One night my husband and I decided to try out this place cause it was about 30 minutes closer than our normal sushi place. It was new so we figured everything had to be fresh, right? WRONG. Now, I have eaten sushi in 3 continents and many countries around the world... Let me tell you, Spicy Tuna Roll was pureed mush. Not trying to be gross at all but it looked as though it was chewed up and spit out. But I was not about to let looks be deceiving and decided to brave it - try a piece. OMG, I was in the bathroom within 5 minutes. NOT A FAN! When we told the waitress that we were done and just wanted the check, she did ask us what was wrong. After telling her she didn't even bat an eye or try to correct the problem of the WHOLE plate of uneaten and untouched sushi. Talk about lack of customer service and quality of food. Will never be visiting there again and now look forward to the drive to our other sushi place... We know we get quality from them! read more

Each time is a very pleasant and enjoyable experience, my favorite is the Bento Box but I like trying something different each time. Always, order miso soup with my entree. Just ordered this as I work in Carrollton and was craving Thai. I LOVE thai food - and this by far is not that. It is chinese food priced at thai prices. This probably is what has forced me to give such a bad review: When I bit into a couple pieces of chicken, there was grit in them and I had to spit it right out. NOT good. I've not tried the sushi - it looked good. I feel bad for giving a bad review, but this is just my opinion. I checked it out bc all the other reviews were so great. The atmosphere was nice and clean. We recently moved to Smithfield from a big city. Being huge fans of sushi, Thai and Chinese foods, we were a little dismayed at the restaurant choices we had here as Smithfield is so small with very few choices of where to eat. By chance we came across Tokyo Thai. The food was delicious! The sushi was fresh and outstanding. The Bento boxes were great as well. The real surprise was the "bang bang shrimp,". It was honestly the best shrimp appetizer I have ever tasted. So good. I highly recommend this restaurant. read more

First Asian cuisine restaurant that we have loved in the Virginia area! They have great lunch specials. Sushi tasted fresh and was well prepared. The bento box was great; we had the garlic shrimp which was cooked perfectly! No complaints whatsoever! Service was also great! read more

Huuuuuge disappointment! Just spent $50 for only me. Never even leave reviews but as a chef and former restaurant owner the food was so bad. The,service was AMAZING AND I GOT THE FOOD TO GO! Duck roll was extremely salty and lacked texture, fried oyster was soggy but the worst was something I order from every "Japanese " restaurant is yellowtail with jalapeño. Soy sauce and truffle. Very classic dish. No truffle flavor and served with just soy sauce. Super thick cut fish. Just a disaster. Service was great read more

So I work down the street and on teacher work days I REALLY want some sushi. I tried this place at random because it was close and pretty well priced and it was SO delicious and fresh! A little cabin fever resulting from snowmaggedon had us feeling adventurous. So we decided to drive to Smithfield for dinner and stumbled across this little gem. The humble entry is misleading. We a party of 5 and we all loved everything we ordered. Except for the vanilla ice cream that someone ordered and he wasn't displeased until he tried the fried cheesecake (and realized his mistake). I had vegetable pad Thai which was quite tasty ( tad spicier than what I've had at other places) and cheese ragoons (nicely crisped). The green tea ice cream was creamy and well flavored. Portions are ample enough to share a dish. Service was efficient and friendly. Will most definitely revisit. read more

Had a very pleasant experience, tried the generals chicken. It was a little chewy, I asked for chicken and broccoli instead and there were no problems. My meal came out from the kitchen quickly and without any problems. It's always great when you have a accommodating staff. We even discussed making some special/ off menu meals and their response was sure we can make it for you. Haven't tried the sushi yet, that will be our next visit. We have been going here for years but I am just now writing a review. Fabulous menu ranging from typical Chinese, sushi and Thai. Everyone that works there is so sweet. They bend over backwards for me and my daughter to make sure everything is perfect and that we are always satisfied. They do extras to make kids happy even though there isn't a kids menu. Living in Smithfield, I get the opportunity to eat here on a regular basis. It is, by far, the best asian food in Smithfield. The sushi and sashimi always get my vote. From the Maki platters to the ala carte, I have never found something I wouldn't eat again. The family always get one of the chinese dishes like General Tso's or cashew chicken, (which is one of my favorites too but the I'll skip it when I have good sushi available.) The soups are decent. Not a fan of miso but anything else is worth ordering. The only thing I stay away from are the salads. If your in Smithfield, Tokyo & Thai will top your trip. Beyond the food, the wait staff is great. The decot is nice. I'm not one for a heavy handed "americanized" asian environment and this meets that goal. You know you're in an asian resturant without feeling like you're inside a paper lantern! read more

I stopped by here for lunch after reading the reviews in Yelp. I love Tai food and although I played it safe with the general Tso chicken and it was delicious. The serving size of the chicken was enough for 3 people, however the steamed rice came in a separate bowl with a portion size not even enough for one serving and I was charged separately for the steamed rice (which is usually included in your entree). I wish I could give this place one star. I ordered takeout for me and my family and they put it all in one brown paper bag. It was very full so we were very careful with it.  The problem is it turns out they didn't seal the soup properly. My daughter held it carefully on her lap always held it near the bottom and on the way home my daughter felt scalding hot soup on her lap while we were driving. She started screaming and I pulled over. The bag ripped apart because it was wet from the hot soup and $80 worth of food spilled all over my brand-new car.  We drove back, brought it back inside Tokyo Thai and I told the owner about my daughter's lap and brought her out to see what happened to my car.  I couldn't believe what she said. She said my daughter was holding it wrong!  WHAAAAT!!!!???? She wasn't even in the car when it spilled obviously so how could she say that?  She said it was a big bag and my daughter shouldn't have held it on her lap. WHAAAT!!!??? That's her answer to them not packing the soup right?  Why'd they pack it in such a big bag then?  And she said she's been open for six years and this is never happened. What does it have to do with me? I'm lucky I even got a refund after she blamed us left and right is for THEIR error.  She's lucky my daughter didn't need to go to the hospital or else I'd sue the place. She refused to even pay to clean the inside of my brand new car which now smells like fish. I dropped my daughter off at home to get cleaned up and drove straight to Carrollton Car Wash near the Food Lion on Carrollton Boulevard. $40 to clean my car. DAMN! Carrollton Car Wash was very sympathetic and promised to take extra good care of my car. Hopefully it doesn't still smell like fish when they get done with it.  The owner of Tokyo Thai could have saved face if she didn't react the way she did. Horrible owner! Obviously I'm never going to that place again since they treat their customers like that. Would you want to go to a place that treats their customers like that when they make a mistake? It was a very traumatic experience for both me and my daughter. NEVER AGAIN! read more

The food is good at a good price especially the sushi lunch specials, until I found out from two separate people that had to work there in their kitchen that the cooks smoke on the line. I thought there was no way but then the sheer power of the hood fans was explained to me unfortunately it made sense. BEWARE!!! First off let me say the food was edible, not great but passable as food. However let's talk about Logan. Logan was our waiter, he was condescending, rude and sarcastic, it was not welcome. This being my third trip to Tokyo Thai and only receiving decent service on one of those visits I had hoped that the remodel had come with a revamping of the staff itself, or perhaps new management. This does not seem to be the case. Logan insulted our intelligence and was frankly a bit to "familiar " acting with the 8 year old little girl that accompanied us. I don't know how long he has worked at this establishment but if he remains in their employ the business is certain to feel the negative effects. While on the subject I very sternly asked him to stop his obvious and unprovoked ugliness towards our party of 3 and Logan did not skip a beat continuing with his sarcastic and creepy manners. Our party consisted of two women and a sweet young girl, we felt extremely uncomfortable and will NEVER return. To boot Logan had the nerve to insult my husbands picture on his credit card and had the absolute nerve to tell me that I looked a lot different now than the picture on my ID. I have never had such an unpleasant dining experience. From unprovoked insults to the leering at a child Logan ruined what should have been a celebration of a young girl receiving Staight A's all school year long. read more

husband and father and I decided to go out for dinner tonight so we went to the Tokyo Thai restaurant and Smithfield was very disappointed on as far as the service was concerned had a young men Logan that waited on us we sat down to a table that was very sticky and I moved everything away from the sticky area where my arms were and asked for a rag and the gentleman that was our waiter Logan gave us a story that he was sorry that the table was sticky due to the fact that the clear coating was coming off well that's not true due to the fact that if the time everything was moved on the table then I would not be finding money on it so therefore it was Not a sanitize table that was clean properly him then he proceeds to give us a little attitude during our whole meal was very disappointed as far as the food was concerned it was wonderful always is always will be but they need to find servers in there that know what the hell they are doing read more

We like the food and service here. We eat limited sushi when we go here I must admit. Jen is a little more adventurous than I am in the Sushi dept. I stick to shrimp tempura and California rolls. Both have been fresh when I ordered them. I like the steak and shrimp Hibachi they have. Prices are okay, not terrible, not great. One thing we have noticed in our last two trips was the shrinking of the serving sizes. My Hibachi is missing 20% of the steak and shrimp. Jen's favorite meal is a bento box that is now missing two items and the fruit portion of the meal was four different types of fruit but is now some lonely orange slices. I guess this is just the outcome of higher food prices for the restaurant industry. We noticed the difference during restaurant week but thought it would be temporary as it was just a way to offer the dish at the discounted price. They apparently stayed at the lower portion offering. All in all, we like the restaurant but have noticed that it isn't the value it once was. read more

Tokyo Thai is my favorite restaurant in town. We order take out once a week and usually dine in on the weekends. My husband and I have tried a wide variety of items on the menu and have never been disappointed. My favorite is the avocado rolls or the vegetable hibachi and my husband usually goes for the chicken and steak hibachi which comes with a salad/soup and rice. When we have out of town guests visit, we always bring them here. The food is wonderful! Definitely give it a try if you want a quality dining experience. read more

I can only report on the sushi and spring rolls because that is all I have had. I have been to this restaurant twice. The ambiance is very nice - very clean and excellent decor. The wait staff were very friendly. The sushi was perfect - in taste and presentation. I also tried a spring roll which was delicious and the plate was formal and presented nicely. I took my mom the second time and she had a salad with the house homemade dressing. This was tasty although not as well plated (but I don't think that's any reason to give it a lesser rating as it was a starter salad). She had the King Salmon which was good. It can get a tad pricey in there but I think the quality of food (at least what I have had) and ambiance justifies the cost. Its a nice little gem in the town of Smithfield and I would recommend it. They also have Thai and Chinese but I have not had anything from that side of the menu. I had the jasmine tea so cannot comment on their beverages.
