Smithfield Ice Cream Parlor suits in a lovely shopping area in the picturesque and historic town of Smithfield, VA, home of Smithfield hams. A small group of us stopped in on a recent trip to the area for lunch and ice cream. It's a very casual place where you order your food at the cashier, and the food is delivered to your table. No one ever cleaned our table, and I didn't notice anyone cleaning any of the others Bertrand customers either. Unfortunately, the menu was limited, the few items ordered were poor quality. The ice cream is very disappointing. Simply grocery store ice cream that the servers dish out to order. They do have a wide variety of flavors to choose from. The staff is quite pleasant. I cannot recommend this place enough! If you're visiting smithfield or just need a quick place to eat lunch - you have to come here! The ice cream is Hersheys I believe so it's pretty good. The real reason we always come here is the food!! We always get a club sandwich with chips and a drink and it never disappoints. I've been coming here since I was a kid and I still to this day have not gotten tired of it. The staff is also very friendly and food comes out pretty quickly. We love trips to the icecream parlor for an All American sub (ham, salami, bacon) and icecream! Subs come hot on delicious rolls and they sell Hershey's icecream. Our favorite icecream flavors are Little Blue Panda (blue with Oreo pieces) and Playdough (vanilla with sugar cookie bits). They also offer a free sundae on your birthday! A great place to eat even with a red meat allergy! The last time I went in a staff member named Courtney remembered that I had the red meat allergy and mentioned it to the cashier. They always take extra precautions while making the sub/sandwich. read more

I love the ice cream here. The Hershey's ice cream is so nostalgic! I haven't been to an ice cream parlor like this since I was a child. The food could be a little better but the ice cream was amazing. I love the location in the middle of Main Street in Downtown Smithfield. This is one of my favorite places and I love walking down Main Street and looking at some of the shops on a leisurely stroll. I love visiting Smithfield for its small town charm and not being congested. The hubs and I had finished kayaking in the area before stopping in. Luckily we found parking on the streets right by the shop on a Sunday. Upon entering we saw candy striped awning with a fifties feeling of an old fashioned ice cream shop. Red stools and booths gave the place color. This one in particular had a sandwich station on one side near the entrance with ice-cream on the end. Sandwiches and ice-cream, my favorite combination all in one place. We walked up to the counter and looked up at the menu. I decided on a hot Reuben while my better half who wasn't as famished as I was chose the kids grilled cheese. Both came with a pickle, chips on a paper plate. One thing I heard a lot was the microwave. It was positioned not to far away from where they toasted the bread. I guess that's how they melt the cheese and quickly make "hot" sandwiches. My Reuben was tasty and warm. It was good thousand island dressing, sauerkraut, and pastrami. Both sandwiches were served on paper plates making it easier to dispose of it. Salty ruffle chips followed to accompany my sandwich. I found out they serve Hershey's Premium Ice-cream. I was a bit confused, because the shop said Smithfield's ice-cream parlor. I thought it was going to be home made or in-house made where their ice-cream creations was exclusive to their store. That was a bit disappointing, but we still ordered a strawberry milkshake to satisfy our sweet cravings. It was cold, thick and creamy. Hershey's is a good brand when it's available to have. It was a great stopover for lunch. Great place for families, friends, and little ones to grab a quick bite. We will be back when we are in town :) read more

Nothing and no one can beat Smithfield ice cream parlor. Their ice cream is the best and so many different flavors. Their chicken salad sandwiches on toast are also wonderful! It is a very quaint hometown place. If you plan to go there on the Fourth of July weekend, better plan ahead because the line is out the door. The downtown area of Smithfield is adorable with it's historic homes and quaint shops. One of these little shops is the ice-cream parlor located on the main street that is easily identifiable with a candy stripe awning that draws you in. It was with much anticipation to check this place out after a two hour hike around Windsor Castle just down the road. A shake sounded really good and the family was anxious to get inside. When entering you immediately notice a lot of memorabillia on the wall which gave it a cozy folksy feel which I liked. However, when sitting down at the bar with my kids the service did not feel small town friendly at all. As a matter of fact it felt like we were getting the cold shoulder and not acknowledged. We all stepped over to make a selection of ice-cream and I noticed it was Hershey's. That was a disappointment as I was hoping for a more upgraded brand. Not that Hershey's is bad, but expectations were higher. The woman at the counter was just meh. She did offer a sample to my daughter who was undecided. Two of us got shakes and my daughter got a scoop in a bowl. For the most part we all enjoyed, but my son did not really care for his mint chocolate chip. We asked an employee to change the TV at the bar from a day time talk show to kids programing which they obliged. The same employee was sweeping and cleaning the tables. The place was indeed clean and presented well to customers. This is a cool place if in Smithfield. They offer sandwiches and subs along with ice-cream too. Been here several times but the last time they couldn't figure out the credit card machine for some reason!!! When my wife got home she checked and they had ran it through TEN TIMES to the point that her card company SHUT HER CARD DOWN!!! When she went in the next morning the kid working there swears it didn't go through and then refused to give her the owners phone number saying that she doesn't need to get involved! Get the Grinder sub! I don't know what it is about this place, but it's captured my heart and eating enthusiasm. The Grinder sub is probably the best, most delicious, and delectable Italian sub I've ever had. It only has two meats on it, and I can't figure out what exactly sets it apart from others. It even beats Anna's subs. The ice cream is Hershey ice cream and they have a variety of flavors. And everything is very nicely priced. I ordered a sub, chips, a milkshake, and 5 ice creams and the bill was only $22. The atmosphere is great too and it's in a good location on the main drag of Smithfield. Such a cute little shop right along Main Street. More than just an ice cream parlor, they offer a pretty decent selection of sandwiches as well as hot dogs. It kind of reminded me of one of the old school pharmacies that double as a diner. I had one of their combos that came with a BLT, chips, a large drink and a scoop of ice cream for $8.50. It was the perfect amount for lunch. They had a decent crowd, as it was a late Saturday morning and is right across the street from the farmer's market. As one might imagine, there were a lot of kids in there, and it was quite noisy. I grabbed a seat at the little bar and watched some random sports channel. The sweet tea was a little too sweet for my taste, but was decent. The BLT was great. I had it on toasted rye. The tomatoes were plump and the bacon was the pretty thick and just shy of crispy. I finished with a scoop of raspberry swirl ice cream. I agree with JD, the servers could have been more polite, they seemed pretty annoyed by the kids- which they should be used to. I didn't have any issues with them though, and they happily gave me a refill before I hit the road. read more

I love the feel of this parlor! The smell when you walk in is absolutely delicious! They use Hershey's Ice Cream. It is very reasonably priced and I prefer to have my ice cream scoops on a fresh waffle cone. They are not stingy with giving samples of the ice cream, which is great when you just cannot make up your mind or have never seen a particular type of ice cream. The 'food' there is a bit over priced for what you get. Generic pre-sliced bread and lunch meat popped into a toaster oven with chips for over 7$? Seems a bit ridiculous. If their breads were baked fresh it would be all around better. I would recommend the ice cream to anyone but if you want a sandwich worth the money take your business to Subway. read more

I have a soft spot for main streets in small towns. I took my family to eat at Taste across the street from this place and I decided to treat the kids to some ice cream. They had been good and they deserved the treat. The place is on the corner of a building and there was a little bit of outdoor seating. The staff was very friendly and dealt with my kids very well. They had about 20 different tubs of ice cream to choose from. Good selection. My kids got cones and we at outside to enjoy the weather and the people walking by. I would be more interested to come back here and try out the deli. I could see getting a sub sandwich and then washing it down with an ice cream. I will come back to just have that experience. The people who run it are so nice, the kids who work there are always really helpful and friendly, it's clean and really well maintained. Not to mention the ice cream! If you go in and sit down, no one will come take your order. You have to go up to the register to order. I am new to the area, and didn't know, so it was kind of frustrating to wait and wait and realize that I had to order at the counter. The ice cream is Hershey brand, but a cone is crazy overpriced. A single scoop waffle cone was 5 dollars! One scoop ...... .five dollars ...... Yeah. The prices are really high. A bunch of teens work there, so it's not the best service as they don't genuinely give a crap about if you get a plate of crumbs instead of chips. They're more concerned with vaping together out back. I cringed when I saw the grilled cheese is literally bread run through the toaster, then cheese is added and it's tossed in the microwave. Just did a random pop up here with friends and it turned out way better than expected. The customer service was off the chain, everyone was extremely nice when I walked in and I felt very taken care of. Their selection of flavors is far more than I've ever seen in an average ice cream shop. If you do stop by I recommend the oatmeal cookie crunch, I tasted it and fell in love.
