I wanted something light for lunch so a few days ago I stopped at this place. They say that everything happens for a reason and making this stop made me think of that phrase. I had two sushi rolls. They were reasonably priced, great tasting, and actually made me want more. I literally came back for lunch the next three days. I recommend this place to enjoy fresh tasting sushi for a great price. This little restaurant is hidden in strip mall off Kirby and Quince and let me tell you guys something, it's got some of the best Sushi and fried rice you can get. Very good Japanese food -- sushi, soups, noodles, rice, and more. The focus is on to-go orders, but there is dining inside also, and the dining room is attractive and clean. I had the steak and shrimp fried rice. The rice was over cooked, the steak was like rubber, and the shrimp was fishy tasting.

My husband picked up an order for me. I order chicken and steak fried rice no egg. When he got home, it was chicken and shrimp with egg. I am allergic to both seafood and egg. I called and told them, they asked me to bring the rice back to prove it was wrong. I was pissed as the restaurant was 20 minutes away; nevertheless, I drove it back. They remade the rice but told me I would still have to pay for it. I told them I should receive a refund because I had to come back. They were like no, you have to pay. I just gave them the rice back and asked for my money. I don't feel like I should have to pay for it because I had to drive all the way back out there. It's the least they could do for messing up my order. Now you have to throw away 2 rice orders; at least I hope that's what they do. If you didn't want to refund $10 then it almost seems illogical that you will throw 2 batches of rice away. Hmmm... Be weary, you may just receive that rice I brought back to the store. Poor customer service. I never revisit restaurants with poor customer service. Ridiculous! read more

Expectations are always key to keep in mind when trying something new. I went in to Tokyo Grill with low expectations (I always am skeptical of Japanese places for authenticity reasons). That being said, I was pretty surprised. This is a to-go restaurant, pure and simple. What I love about it is that it's not pretentious like so many other Japanese restaurants in this city. While you can eat inside (which I did), it's not really the best experience. I'm not saying that to make the staff sound bad, they did fine, but it's not meant to be a great sit-down experience. And that's fine; I've now eaten here both take out only and eat-in, and I enjoyed both. The food itself is much better than I would expect for a take-out Japanese restaurant. They have several items which are common items in Japan, and they do a good job with recreating them. The sushi I had was pretty average to me, I honestly think the meals are much better. Unfortunately, none of their locations are all that close to me, or I would go more often. I tried the california roll, fancy dragon roll, katsu don, yakitori, hibachi steak and fried rice. What I was most impressed with was the katsu don, actually. All in all, a great deal. Not to mention that I have been to lesser Japanese restaurants in town that appear to be "better" and "nicer." read more

It's sad if this is what people think Japanese fast food should taste like. I guess as an Asian, I should know better than to come to a place like this, expecting any glimmer of authenticity. I had been to the Park Ave. location before with mediocre results but the Kirby Pkwy. location seems to be worse. I ordered the tempura udon and the broth was bright yellow, like bouillon yellow, and tasted nothing like any kind of dashi broth that I've ever had. I don't understand because I saw someone with a clear broth soup that I can only assume was the broth that they should be using in all of the soups. The guy working the counter was rude and dismissive, saying all the courteous and polite words, but with condescension. One of the waiters was quite kind. And the frustrating thing was that the place kept pretty busy the entire time I was there. People kept coming in, eating crappy (and not cheap) Asian food, in weird Styrofoam and plastic takeout containers, even when eating your food in the restaurant. Memphis is seriouy lacking in any Asian cuisine besides Vietnamese, Japanese being one of the most limited. I will not be returning here again, even for a casual lunch, nearly $17 wasted on bad food. read more

I've only ever written a review when an establishment has left a lasting impression on me and this one totally did that but in a very negative way. I'd give this place zero stars if I could. I've eaten here several times in the past and have noticed a steady decline in the quality of food and service. The food is just passable now and the only reason I've continued to go is because of its close proximity to my home. I will not be going back as the manager (or possibly owner) was rude and unapologetic when I had to come back from home to pick up food that was left out of my order. I'm used to quality management offering some sort of compensation or at minimum apologizing profusely for the inconvenience but she said it was my fault for not checking my order before leaving. With management like this, it's no wonder there's been a decline in quality. I'll be using my hard earned money at an establishment that actually values their customers and suggest you all do the same. read more
