Tokyo Tavern is still a wonderful stop in Pleasant Valley, as we continue to do so. We're thrilled with the service, food, drinks, and also the chats we have with the workers. Being a regular will develop a close relationship with them, which is key. Some days and nights, tables can be filled up -- keeping in mind, that a reservation can sure come and handy, and they'll reserve it as well, even for a big party. Something that drew to my attention during the last couple of visits, was the portions have gotten smaller. A bit of a turnoff, but I still enjoy their food very much. The place itself is pretty small and cozy like having a meal at home, but still enough room so you have space. So the service was pretty nice, the lady that works here was so friendly and sweet and sure greeted locals and out of Townes like myself like an old friend stoping by. Plus refilling my drink without me asking was really awesome too. Hah. The BBQ squid app was very tasty, tender and definitely flavorful bathed in sauce, if anything I wish the tentacles were not as grilled as much, since they ended up being crispy and charred. Philadelphia roll, nothing to otherwise than great and equal portions of cheese, salmon and avocado. For the omg roll, the seared tuna and wasabi mayo with scallions really made roll great, since added a spicy pow to the salty roll, the spicy yellow crushed filling was great, but kind of wish there was not tempura crunch in the middle with yellowtail mix since the rolls fell apart since crunchy just fell out. We stopped for lunch here with my brother and his wife. We started with the dumplings as an appetizer and they were delicious. Hubby got the 3-roll special for lunch which was around $15 which was a mighty tasty deal. I ate all the spicy tuna! Very good. I shared my chicken udon noodles. The noodles were extra thick (I'm not complaining) but the sauce needed a little more flavor. I still ate the whole thing. The Bento box was also good. I tried the steak and it was good...a little chewy but good. The shrimp dumplings looked so good. Never got to taste them tho...I guess brothers still don't want to share ha ha. Seriously, by the end of lunch nothing was left! The salmon teriyaki was also very good. It had a nice kick. The ambiance is not but the service was great. Ordering monkfish liver twice the delicate appetizer was beautifully presented it was fantastic. Tokyo Tavern is hands-down the best Sushi Restaraunt in Dutchess County...and maybe even the entire Hudson Valley. I lived in Manhattan for 20 years, and I can say with confidence that Tokyo Tavern bests 95%+ of the sushi restaurants in NYC. So being the best in the Hudson Valley is actually a layup in that context! I have been to Japan, and Tokyo Tavern holds its own even amongst the best sushi restaurants in Tokyo and Kyoto. Be sure to try the Seafood Soup, with generous portions of Shrimp, Crabmeat, Scallops, a fantastic home made broth, and vegetable goodies to boot. The fish is phenomenal, and the reason why is because Tokyo Tavern does not use the distributors that all of the other sushi joints in the HV use - the owner personally goes down to the Seaport in Manhattan for all of the fish served at Tokyo Tavern. Tokyo Tavern was actually open for over 15 years in Manhattan (Midtown East), so it's no wonder that it is far better than anything else in the HV. Competition makes things good, and you will notice the difference! Be sure to ask the chef about any specials as they often have some hidden gems on offer. I don't eat rolls because I prefer sushi and sashimi, so I can't personally vouch for those, but I've seen many a platter of sushi rolls come out of the kitchen and they look fantastic! I really should try a roll sometime, but the sushi and sashimi is so good that I just stick with what I love. The decor is simple traditional Japanese style. We come here often. The owners/chefs are wonderful. The food is very good and they are accommodating. They get busy- lots of take out orders. The hamachi Kama is always good! They often have specials that you might not find at other sushi places in the area. I see all the 5 star reviews and don't get it, then I noticed most of the reviews are very dated. We ordered takeout from here Sunday and it was awful! We ordered sushi, sashimi, hibachi and some tempura. The tempura was the only decent thing that we ordered, the hibachi chicken was inedible except for the vegetables the chicken was beyond tough it was so chewy everybody was grossed out. There were several mistakes in the order and when we called to complain the woman who answered had nothing but bad attitude and was not going to correct or make good on our order. We spent $186 and we should have just lit the money on fire most of it went in the trash total garbage. We won't be going back read more

I came here with some friends on a Friday evening, a bit before 7, and I'm glad we arrived when we did. Within 20 minutes, there were customers at every table. Obviously, people know to come here for good quality sushi and/or Japanese food, well prepared, and served by very nice people. We started with a delicious "house" saki very reasonably priced. They have an assortment of other hot and cold saki as well. My party ordered a variety of entrees including sushi, a sashimi deluxe platter, and a vegetarian tempura dish. These all came out quickly and were well prepared. My vegetarian friend loved his tofu tempura, served on a bed of vegetables, calling it VERY good (with emphasis on the VERY). Similarly the deluxe sashimi platter came with a nice variety, and the sauce accompanying the salmon was very rich and complex, with elements of smoky and spicy. My sushi was well prepared, accompanied by good wasabi. I particularly liked their take on their Pleasant Valley Roll. Parking is available in lots, and the small lot behind the building is interesting, as it is shared with a private residence in back. It's not a lot of space, but it's enough for the restaurant. On weekends, I'd suggest arriving early, because the place WILL fill. read more

I have to update my review after tonight. I gave delivery another chance (I'm not in a hurry tonight, and after all the food is yummy every time), and it was excellent. The food was prepared and delivered in only 45 mins. And it was delicious! Last time I thought the rice wasn't the best but the rice today was perfect. I truly loved everything I ordered. I ordered the veggie Yaki udon and vegetable gyoza for the first time and it was very good. I will certainly be ordering from here again. This is an excellent place for vegetarians and vegans. There are not many Asian restaurants to choose from in Millbrook/Pleasant Valley/Verbank areas, so to have this cute little Japanese Restaurant with good food is wonderful. The place is small, in a purple house next to McDonald's on Main St. They have parking in the back of the building for patrons. Entrance either from the back or front of the Building. Since it's small, only 1 unisex bathroom, no changing table, but you can easily change the kid in the car if need be. Not great for party more than 8.... Unless you want to split up. We were party of 3 adults plus a toddler on a Wednesday night, the place was quiet. We ordered Age Tofu(fried tofu) as appetiser, nice portion size and was only $4.50. We ordered the Yaki Udon with shrimp for my daughter and she loved it. We also ate some of it too. Between the 3 of us, we ordered the sushi & sashimi for Two plus a Queen Roll. Soup and salad came with the Sushi combo and they brought out the "boat" with our sushi & sashimi. Everything was really good and tasted fresh, we were stuffed! Just a side note, they only serve limited wine and beer selection, no bar or mixed drinks here. Not a big deal, but definitely a place for quiet date night or relaxed dinner. They deliver very swiftly and the people are super nice. They've treated me to a nice hot cup of tea on the occasion that I've waited for a to-go order inside. I called to let them know and when I told them what I originally ordered, the woman said they didn't have that app anymore, which was a little too late of notice. I came here after a day of hiking and this was a serious welcome site. The purple house really stood out in the street and it was quite odd at first, but in some way gave it a lot of character. The staffs were really nice and spent time giving me recommendation on the sake. The sushi and sashimi was on point with the freshness and flavor profile. The salmon belly was in particular a stand out. It was so soft and tasty I would come back just for it. I also really enjoyed the black dragon roll as it had a mixture of crunchy texture to the conventional roll. Overall, not only was the food great, but so was the service.
